This paper presents formulations for time-based first-order and second-order high-pass, shelf, and notch filters. These formulations are an extension to the existing literature where low-pass filters are already developed using a multiphase controlled oscillator in conjunction with a phase detector and charge pump. The presented high-pass filter expands the circuit by introducing a current-controlled delay line (CCDL) that provides a direct path from input to output. By combining the high-pass filter with the low-pass filter, we show that shelf and notch filters can be obtained without an increase in circuit complexity compared to the high-pass filter. The results show good matching between the ideal small signal and the simulated time-based large signal frequency response. The simulated of total harmonic distortion for the filters shows an increase in distortion due to the nonlinearities introduced by the CCDL for the high-pass, notch, and shelf filter compared to the existing low-pass filter. Digital integrated electronics benefits from its higher abstraction level, allowing optimisation methods and automated workflows. However, analogue integrated circuit design is still predominantly done manually, leading to lengthy design cycles. This paper proposes a new systematic design approach for the sizing of analogue integrated circuits to address this issue. The method utilises a surrogate optimisation technique that approximates a simple monomial function based on few simulation results. These monomials are convex and can be optimised using a simple linear optimisation routine, resulting in a single global optimal solution. We show that monomial functions, in many cases, have an analytic relation to integrated circuits, making them well suited for the application. The method is demonstrated by designing a 14 MHz pseudodifferential voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) with minimised current consumption and is manufactured in a 180 nm process. Power electronics is a fast-developing technology within the electrical engineering field. This paper presents the results and experiences gained from applying design-oriented project-based learning to switch-mode power supply design in a power electronics course at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Project-based learning (PBL) is known to be a motivating problem-centered teaching method that not only places students at the core of teaching and learning activities but also gives them the ability to transfer their acquired scientific knowledge into industrial practice. Students choose a specification to implement from various power converter application projects, such as a fuel cell power conditioning converter, a light-emitting diode (LED) driver or a battery charger. The students select the topology, design magnetic components, calculate input/output filters and design closed-loop controllers necessary to fulfill the requirements listed in the chosen specification and thus meet the project's goals. This paper presents the course teaching plan and teaching methods, assessment method and student feedback.

Power electronics converters operating at elevated temperature usually have degraded performance, such as reduced efficiency, lower noise immunity, and decreased system reliability, compared to those operating at room temperature. Nevertheless, harsh-environment applications, such as deep earth drilling, automotive, avionics, and space exploration, have been utilizing converters in high-temperature environments and are continuously pushing the temperature limits higher and higher with the advances in device technologies and converter design methodologies. This article starts with a literature study to identify the temperature dependence and the temperature limits of individual components. Then, published works about high-temperature converters are examined. Their selection of components is compared. Experimental results are analyzed to reflect on the efficacy of different component selections. Finally, since the latest published high-temperature converter was developed more than five years ago, a 1-kV input, 520-V output, 1-kW, $150$ °C-ambient-temperature-rated dc–dc converter is designed with state-of-the-art devices. Based on the literature review, and the test of the $150$ °C prototype, the main challenges of designing high-temperature power electronics converters are identified and concluded to be time-consuming, difficult, and expensive characterization of components, lack of accurate and computationally efficient models of converters, and optimizing component selection within short development time. This article presents an analysis of the different loss modes of the switching devices in a class-D series resonant converter operating with either fixed dead time or fixed duty cycle. A feasible operating region where the FETs in the inverter stage only exhibit reverse conduction losses, with no hard-switching, is identified. Furthermore, the impact of using a fixed dead time versus a fixed duty cycle is investigated. We find that using a fixed dead time is superior to using a fixed duty cycle, as a broader operating range can be achieved for the same losses, or the same operating range can be achieved with lower losses. A reduction in the reverse conduction losses of up to 59% or an expansion of the operational frequency range by 33% when using a fixed dead time is found. The modeling approach is validated on a 1-MHz prototype employing GaN switching devices. Lastly, a design example shows how the presented analysis can be used to determine the optimal fixed dead time/duty cycle for use with frequency modulation control such that the losses are minimized. This letter proposes a self-driven gate driver solely composed of passive components for synchronous rectification (SR). It utilizes the energy of the converter itself, automatically considers component tolerances and temperature variations of critical design parameters, and tunes the SRs on-time. Furthermore, no microcontroller, auxiliary power supply, or current-sensing/voltage-sensing components is required. A great amount of cost is therefore saved. The proposed gate driver is preferable to be used to some resonant converters operating as dc transformers. This letter presents its practical implementation in an LLC resonant converter. Zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of dual active bridge (DAB) converter and its range extension have been studied intensively. However, this article proves that the external inductance location, i.e., placing on which side of the transformer, does affect the ZVS operation due to transformers’ parasitic capacitances, in particular, at a high switching frequency of higher than 1 MHz. Thus, this article, for the first time, gives the mathematical model of the resonant transition during the dead time and thereby analyzes partial hard switching under different modulation schemes with consideration of transformer's parasitic capacitances. From the analysis of ZVS operation, the solution of splitting the interfacing inductance and placing them on both sides of the transformer is proposed and its associated methodology of selecting these inductances is introduced. It extends the ZVS for all the switching devices and, therefore, enhances the efficiency or moves losses away from the critical semiconductor devices. The asymmetrical half-bridge (AHB) flyback converter is capable to achieve zero voltage switching and has lower voltage stress compared to the active clamp flyback converter. This topology gives much margin for components selection and transformer turns ratio design. It is well adapted to voltage step-down applications. However, the optimal design for AHB flyback converter taking current dip effect causing by components parasitic capacitances, and each component effect to power loss into consideration has never been explored. This article gives detailed operation and mathematical analyses of this effect. The optimal design procedure with the consideration of each circuit parameter is presented in this article. The transformer benefits low power loss from interleaving winding layout. A 56 W/inch3 1 MHz 65 W prototype with 100–250 V input is built to verify the feasibility of the converter. With the emerging technology of wide-band-gap power semiconductors and modern ferrite materials, the switching frequency of dc–dc converters can be pushed to mega-hertz range to achieve higher power density. In order to deal with a high conduction current, multiphase converters are adopted to distribute the current for both power devices and windings. However, the current unbalance among phases may cause unexpected power loss to the converters. In this letter, the current unbalance issue is addressed by an integrated current balancing transformer for a two-phase dc–dc converter. The current of two phases in the converter can be automatically compensated to be identical by the proposed structure, which also reduces the complexity of the control system. A 1-MHz GaN-based two-phase buck converter is built to verify the proposed structure and its efficiency achieves 97.5% at 4 V/6 A output with the ZVS turn-on of the switches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Boundary conduction mode or critical conduction mode is characterized by an inductor current that operates in the boundary between continuous conduction modes (CCM) and discontinuous conduction modes, making the converter switching frequency dependent on the converter operating conditions. The advantage of this operation mode versus CCM is achieving zero current switching (ZCS) conditions for the converter rectifier, which makes it possible to use silicon diode rectifiers without having a penalty due to reverse recovery issues. Moreover, the main switch turn-on loss is decreased due to ZCS conditions and valley switching operation. However, the penalty is an increased current stress in the circuit and an increased main switch turn-off energy loss. Implementation of the synchronous rectifier in boundary conduction mode (BCM) converters makes it possible to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) conditions by extending the synchronous rectifier conduction time after zero current condition in the inductor. High power density and high-efficiency MHz implementations have already been demonstrated in the literature; however, none of the proposed solutions solves the controllability issues of the synchronous rectifier switch. By a rearrangement of the traditional supply-converter-load system connection, partial-power-processing-based converters can be used to achieve a reduction in size and cost, increase in system efficiency and lower device power rating. The concept is promising for different applications such as photovoltaic arrays, electric vehicles and electrolysis. For photovoltaic applications, it can drive each cell in the array to its maximum power point with a relatively smaller converter; for electric-vehicle applications, both an onboard charger with reduced weight and improved efficiency as well as a fast charger station handling higher power can be considered. By showing different examples of partial-power-processing application for energy-conversion and storage units and systems, this paper discusses key limitations of partial-power-processing and related improvements from different perspectives to show the potential in future power electronic systems. High efficiency and low cost power converters for interfacing energy storage have become critical in renewable energy systems. In this paper, a fractional charging converter (FCC) is proposed to reduce power rating as well as cost of the dc–dc converter for hydrogen production by alkaline electrolyzer cells. The FCC configuration only processes the partial power resulting from the voltage difference between the source and the energy storage element.  Moreover, the converter employed in such configuration can be either isolated or non-isolated, which simplifies topology selection. An analysis and comparison of two dc–dc topologies using a high-frequency transformer based on component stress factor (CSF) is performed to determine the optimal solution for the evaluated application. Based on the results of the CSF analysis, and due to its capability of handling wide input voltage, the isolated full-bridge boost converter is designed, built, and tested. Experimental results prove the feasibility of the fractional charging configuration with a reduction of 80% of the power rating compared to the traditional interconnection, which implies a reduction in cost, weight, and an increase in efficiency. The increasing transistor power loss brought by the high switching frequency places a limit to the future high power density converter design. A review of resonant gate drivers is given in this paper to provide a vision for its future application. Various resonant gate driver topologies from the prior-art research is categorized and thoroughly compared in terms of the implementation frequency and the percentage gate driver loss reduction. Moreover, a case study of two representative resonant gate driver topologies is given. The conventional gate drive and two resonant gate drivers are implemented to driver Silicon MOSFETs and Gallium Nitride transistors, respectively. The feasibility and effectiveness of implementing resonant gate drivers in wide-bandgap semiconductor transistors is discussed according to a detailed comparison of loss decomposition. This paper presents design of an isolated high-step-down dc–dc converter based on a class-DE power stage, operating at a 10-MHz switching frequency using enhancement-mode gallium nitride transistors. The converter operating principles are discussed, and the power stage design rated for 20 W is presented for a step down from 200–300 V input to 0–28 V output. Commercially available magnetic materials were explored and the high-frequency resonant inductor and transformer designs using a low-loss Fair-Rite type 67 material are presented. Finite-element simulations have been performed to estimate the parameters of magnetics at 10-MHz. Experimental results are presented at 12 W, 254 V input to 22 V output and 5 W, 254 V input to 14 V output on a laboratory prototype operating at 10-MHz. This paper proposes an improved partially interleaved structure for high-voltage (several kV) high-frequency (several hundred kHz) multiple-output applications. The proposed transformer structure is compared with other typical structures with the leakage inductance, ac capacitance, ac resistance, and the ratio of ac–dc resistance taken into consideration. The proposed structure features lower leakage inductance, smaller ac capacitance, lower ac resistance, and lower ratio of ac–dc resistance, which is suitable for high-frequency high-efficiency applications. A planar transformer with the proposed structure was built and tested in anLCLCresonant converter, where the input voltage is 40 V, the output is 4800 V, the switching frequency is 500 kHz, the output power is 288 W, and the efficiency is 96.8%, which validates the analysis. Achieving high efficiency and high power density is emerging as a goal in many power electronics applications. LLC resonant converter has been proved as an excellent candidate to achieve this goal. To achieve smaller size of passive components, the resonant inductor in the LLC converter is usually integrated into the transformer by utilizing its leakage inductance. However, the leakage inductance of the transformer is usually insufficient and thus the LLC converter has to be operated in a limited frequency range (this limits the input voltage range accordingly), otherwise the power efficiency will drop dramatically. Therefore, a larger resonant inductance in the LLC converter is expected to operate in a wider input voltage range. This paper proposes a new method to create a larger resonant inductance by using a magnetic shunt integrated into planar windings. The accurate leakage inductance modeling, calculation, and optimal design guideline for LLC planar transformer, including optimal magnetic shunt selection and winding layout, are presented. A 280–380 V input and output 48 V–100 W half-bridge LLC resonant converter with 1 MHz resonant frequency is built to verify the design methodology. A comparison is made between two converters with the same parameters, one using magnetic shunt integrated transformer and the others using traditional planar transformer and external inductor. Experimental result shows the proposed converter with magnetic shunt is capable to achieve comparable high efficiency and regulation capability with the other under a wide input voltage, which verifies the optimal design methodology. A new method is implemented in designing of self-oscillating loop for driving piezoelectric transformers (PT). The implemented method is based on combining both analog and digital control systems. Digitally controlled time delay through the self-oscillating loop results in very precise frequency control and ensures optimum operation of the PT in terms of gain and efficiency. Time delay is implemented digitally for the first time through a 16-b digital-to-analog converter in the self-oscillating loop. The new design of the delay circuit provides 45-ps time resolution, enabling fine-grained control of phase in the self-oscillating loop. This allows the control loop to dynamically follow frequency changes of the transformer in each resonant cycle. Control loops have been used with switch-mode audio amplifiers to improve the sound quality of the amplifier. Because these amplifiers use a high-frequency modulation, precautions in the controller design must be taken. Further, the quality factor of the output filter can have a great impact on the controller's capabilities to suppress noise and track the audio signal. In this paper design methods for modern control are presented. The control method proves to easily overcome the challenge of designing a good performing controller when the output filter has a high quality factor. The results show that the controller is able to produce a clear improvement in the Total Harmonic Distortion with up to a 30 times improvement compared to open-loop with a clear reduction in the noise. The coupled magnetic resonant unit (CMRU) has great effect on the transmitting power capability and efficiency of magnetic resonant wireless power transfer system. The key objective i.e. the efficiency coefficient kQ is introduced in the design of CMRU or the coupled windings based on the mutual inductance model. Then the design method with orthogonal experiments and finite element method simulation is proposed to maximize the kQ due to low precise analytical model of AC resistance and inductance for PCB windings at high- frequency. The method can reduce the design iterations and thereby can get more optimal design results. The experiments verified the design objective of kQ as well as the design method effectively. It is well known that multilevel converters can offer significant benefits in terms of harmonic performance and reduced switching losses compared to their two-level counterparts. However, for lower voltage applications the neutral-point-clamped inverter suffers from relatively large semiconductor conduction losses because the output current always flows through two switching devices. In contrast, the T-type multilevel inverter has less conduction losses because only a single outer loop switching device is required to connect the converter output to the upper and lower dc buses, albeit at the expense of increased switching losses since these outer switches must now block the full dc link voltage. Silicon carbide (SiC) mosfet devices potentially offer substantial advantage in this context with their lower switching losses, but the benefit of replacing all switching devices in a T-type inverter with SiC mosfets is not so clear-cut. This paper now explores this issue by presenting a detailed comparison of the use of Si and SiC devices for a three-level T-type inverter operating in grid-tie applications. The study uses datasheet values, switching loss measurements, and calibrated heat sink thermal measurements to precisely compare semiconductor losses for these two alternatives for a T-type inverter operating at or near unity power factor. The results show that replacing only the dc bus connection switches with SiC devices significantly reduces the semiconductor losses, allowing either the converter power level or the switching frequency to be significantly increased for the same device losses. Hence, the use of SiC mosfets for T-type inverters can be seen to be an attractive and potentially cost-effective alternative, since only two switching devices per phase leg need to be upgraded. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of the loss and thermal performance of two advanced three-level inverter topologies, namely the partial silicon carbide (SiC) T-Type and the Hybrid-neutral-point-clamped (NPC), both of which are aimed at reducing the high switching losses associated with a conventional Si T-Type inverter. The first solution directly replaces the 1200 V primary Si IGBT switches with lower loss 1200 V SiC MOSFETs. The second solution strategically adds 600 V CoolMos FET devices to the conventional Si T-Type inverter to reduce the primary commutation losses. Semiconductor loss models, experimentally verified on calibrated heat sinks, are used to show that both variations can significantly reduce the semiconductor losses compared with the Si T-Type inverter. This paper presents the design, modeling, and control of an isolated dc-dc three-port converter (TPC) based on an interleaved-boost full-bridge converter with pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and phase-shift control for hybrid renewable energy systems. In the proposed topology, the switches are driven by phase-shifted PWM signals, where both phase angle and duty cycle are the controlled variables. The power flow between the two inputs is controlled through the duty cycle, whereas the output voltage can be regulated effectively through the phase shift. The primary-side MOSFETs can achieve zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation without additional circuitry. Additionally, due to the ac output inductor, the secondary-side diodes can operate under zero-current-switching (ZCS) conditions. In this study, the operation principles of the converter are analyzed and the critical design considerations are discussed. The dynamic behavior of the proposed ac-inductor-based TPC is investigated by performing state-space modeling. Moreover, the derived mathematical models are validated by simulation and measurements. In order to verify the validity of the theoretical analysis, design, and power decoupling control scheme, a prototype is constructed and tested under the various modes, depending on the availability of the renewable energy source and the load consumption. This paper deals with a thorough analysis of zero-voltage switching, especially for bidirectional inductorless piezoelectric transformer-based switch-mode power supplies with a half-bridge topology. Practically, obtaining zero-voltage switching for all of the switches in a bidirectional piezoelectric power converter is a difficult task. However, the analysis in this paper will be convenient for overcoming this challenge. The analysis defines the zero-voltage region indicating the operating points whether or not soft switching can be met over the switching frequency and load range. For the first time, a comprehensive analysis is provided, which can be used as a design guideline for applying control techniques in order to drive switches in piezoelectric transformer-based converters. This study further conveys the proposed method to the region where all the switches can obtain soft switching. Moreover, the analysis can be applied to other types of resonant converters with or without piezoelectric transformers. Soft switching is required to attain high efficiency in high-frequency power converters. Piezoelectric-transformer-based converters can benefit from soft switching in terms of significantly diminished switching losses and stresses. Adequate dead time is needed in order to deliver sufficient energy to charge and discharge the input capacitance of piezoelectric transformers in order to achieve zero-voltage switching. This paper proposes a method for detecting the optimum dead time in piezoelectric transformer-based switch-mode power supplies. The provision of sufficient dead time in every cycle of the switching period results in the quick start-up of resonant current inside the transformer. The new method is implemented by dynamically detecting the optimum dead time for each resonant cycle and results in reduced energy loss and, consequently, increased efficiency in the converter during initialization time and steady-state operation. This paper presents a digital control technique to achieve valley switching in a bidirectional flyback converter used to drive a dielectric electroactive polymer-based capacitive incremental actuator. This paper also provides the design of a low input voltage (24 V) and variable high output voltage (0–2.5 kV) bidirectional dc–dc flyback converter for driving a capacitive incremental actuator. The incremental actuator consists of three electrically isolated mechanically connected capacitive actuators. It requires three high-voltage (HV) (2–2.5 kV) bidirectional dc–dc converters to accomplish the incremental motion by charging and discharging the capacitive actuators. The bidirectional flyback converter employs a digital controller to improve the efficiency and charge/discharge speed using the valley switching technique during both charge and discharge processes, without the need to sense signals on the output HV side. Experimental results verifying the bidirectional operation of a HV flyback converter are presented using a 3-kV polypropylene-film capacitor as the load. The energy-loss distributions of the converter are presented when 4- and 4.5-kV HV mosfets are used on HV side. The flyback prototype with a 4 kV mosfet demonstrated 89% charge energy efficiency to charge the capacitive load from 0 V to 2.5 kV, and 84% discharge energy efficiency to discharge it from 2.5 kV to 0 V.
