Abstract Lynch Syndrome (LS) prevalence in underrepresented minorities are lacking. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of LS in a minority patient population. Secondary objectives included identifying factors associated with successful LS screening and to characterize clinicopathologic features. Women with endometrial cancer treated within a university system from 2014 and 2016 were included. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) results of MLH1, PMS2, MSH2 and MSH6 were obtained from medical records and clinicopathologic factors abstracted. Patients not previously screened for LS were screened. 276 patients were evaluable. More minority women were screened as part of their routine cancer care (p = 0.005). Additionally, women 50 years or younger were more likely to be screened for LS compared to women older than 51(p = 0.009) and uninsured or reliant on Medicaid patients (p = 0.011) were more likely to be screened during routine care. Six patients received confirmatory germline testing for LS (4.3%), and another 8 patients had a staining pattern suggestive of LS. In an underrepresented population, the rate of LS in endometrial cancer is similar to previous reports. LS may be under diagnosed and opportunities missed when universal screening is not applied in minority women.

Introduction: Recurrent metastatic choriocarcinoma is a rare disease with historically limited guidance in the literature regarding standardized treatment protocols. In this case report, we review the course of a patient with recurrent metastatic choriocarcinoma re-treated with single agent pembrolizumab.Our patient was initially diagnosed with metastatic choriocarcinoma (FIGO Stage IV, WHO Score 13) after presenting for evaluation of amenorrhea. She received standard treatment with etoposide, methotrexate, actinomycin D, cyclophosphamide and vincristine (EMA-CO), with a complete response. However, she recurred one year later. Molecular profiling of a chest wall tumor demonstrated strong expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), and she was started on treatment with single agent pembrolizumab achieving a complete response. Unfortunately, she recurred again 6 months following completion of treatment. She was re-treated with pembrolizumab for 2 years with complete response after 25 cycles and is currently without evidence of disease. She has been followed on surveillance, with no evidence of disease for more than 24 months following treatment. Conclusion: This case represents the first to our knowledge to discuss re-treatment with pembrolizumab for relapsed choriocarcinoma after achieving a complete response.

ObjectiveOvarian cancer in Black women is common in many West African countries but is relatively rare in North America. Black women have worse survival outcomes when compared to White women. Ovarian cancer histotype, diagnosis, and age at presentation are known prognostic factors for outcome. We sought to conduct a preliminary comparative assessment of these factors across the African diaspora.MethodsPatients diagnosed with ovarian cancer (all histologies) between June 2016-December 2019 in Departments of Pathology at 25 participating sites in Nigeria were identified. Comparative population-based data, inclusive of Caribbean-born Blacks (CBB) and US-born Blacks (USB), were additionally captured from the International Agency for Research on Cancer and Florida Cancer Data Systems. Background: In recent years, anatomic pathology laboratories have been struck by new revenue policies secondary to the Affordable Care Act. In particular, modifications to compensation for processing prostatic core needle biopsies (PCNBs) have led to important reimbursement cuts. Herein, we explore a hypothetical reduction in the costs for the processing of PCNBs using three simple, hypothetical methods while maintaining high-standard patient care. Materials and methods: We determined the number of blocks and slides used per case on all PCNBs performed at our institution from August 2013 to September 2014 and calculated the total procedural cost for each case and for the total number of cases processed during the study period based on a published estimated procedural cost. We then estimated the procedural cost of three different proposed hypothetical scenarios that consisted in reducing the number of blocks used per case. A Student t test was used to assess the difference between real and hypothetical costs. Results: A total of 4,406 paraffin blocks were used to process 363 PCNBs with a total annual procedural cost of $26,303. BackgroundHeart transplant is the gold standard therapy for patients with advanced heart failure. Over 5,500 heart transplants are performed every year worldwide. Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a common complication post-heart transplant which reduces survival and often necessitates heart retransplantation. Post-transplant follow-up requires serial coronary angiography and endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) for CAV and allograft rejection screening, respectively; both of which are invasive procedures. This study aims to determine whether osteopontin (OPN) protein, a fibrosis marker often present in chronic heart disease, represents a novel biomarker for CAV.MethodsExpression of OPN was analyzed in cardiac tissue obtained from patients undergoing heart retransplantation using immunofluorescence imaging (n = 20). Tissues from native explanted hearts and three serial follow-up EMB samples of transplanted hearts were also analyzed in five of these patients.ResultsFifteen out of 20 patients undergoing retransplantation had CAV. 13/15 patients with CAV expressed nuclear OPN. 5/5 patients with multiple tissue samples expressed nuclear OPN in both 1st and 2nd explanted hearts, while 0/5 expressed nuclear OPN in any of the follow-up EMBs. 4/5 of these patients had an initial diagnosis of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).ConclusionNuclear localization of OPN in cardiomyocytes of patients with CAV was evident at the time of cardiac retransplant as well as in patients with DCM at the time of the 1st transplant. The results implicate nuclear OPN as a novel biomarker for severe CAV and DCM.

Background: Caribbean immigrants represent one of the largest groups of minorities in the United States (US), yet are understudied. Racial and ethnic disparities among women with ovarian cancer have been reported, but not in immigrant populations. Our objective was to evaluate differences in the clinicopathologic features and survival outcomes of Caribbean-born (CB) immigrants with ovarian cancer, with special focus on the influence of race and ethnicity on these measures.Methods: A review of the institutional cancer registry was performed to identify women with known nativity treated for epithelial ovarian cancer between 2005 and 2017. Sociodemographic, clinical, and outcomes data were collected. Analyses were done using chi-square, Cox proportional hazards models, and the Kaplan-Meier method, with significance set at p < 0.05.Results: 529 women were included in the analysis, 248 CB and 281 US-born (USB). CB women were more likely to have residual disease after debulking surgery (31.2 vs. 16.8%, p = 0.009) and be treated at a public facility (62.5 vs. 33.5%, p < 0.001). Black CB women less frequently received chemotherapy compared to White CB women (55.2 vs. 82.2%, p = 0.001). Among all CB women, Hispanic ethnicity was independently associated with improved survival when adjusting for other factors (HR 0.61 [95% CI 0.39–0.95], p = 0.03). White Hispanic CB women had a median overall survival (OS) of 59 months while Black, non-Hispanic CB women had a median OS of 24 months (log-rank p = 0.04).Conclusion: Among Caribbean-born women with ovarian cancer, Hispanic ethnicity is significantly associated with improved survival outcomes, regardless of race.

Besides BRCA1 and BRCA2, several other inheritable mutations have been identified that increase ovarian cancer risk. Surgical excision of the fallopian tubes and ovaries reduces ovarian cancer risk, but for some non-BRCA hereditary ovarian cancer mutations the benefit of this intervention is unclear. The fallopian tubes of women with hereditary ovarian cancer mutations provide many insights into the early events of carcinogenesis and process of malignant transformation. Here we review cancer pathogenesis in hereditary cases of ovarian cancer, the occurrence of pre-invasive lesions and occult carcinoma in mutation carriers and their clinical management.

A 55-year-old HIV-negative white male presented with right ear deafness, right axillary lymphadenopathy, and weight loss. Laboratory findings included anemia, marked leukocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. Examination of the peripheral smear demonstrated the presence of increased circulating blast-like cells of intermediate size, with basophilic cytoplasm and nuclei with open chromatin. MRI of the brain was compatible with hemorrhagic labyrinthitis. Excisional biopsy of the axillary mass revealed an enlarged lymph node with effaced architecture and “starry sky” appearance. The cells expressed CD20, CD10, BCL6, and surface kappa immunoglobulin light chain, with a high proliferative index by immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. Subsequent bone marrow biopsy was hypercellular (approximately 95%), with blast-like cells virtually replacing all hematopoietic elements. Routine karyotype as well as FISH analysis of bone marrow cells demonstrated rearrangement of the MYC gene at chromosome 8q24 region, IGH/MYC fusion, and additional signal for IGH gene. We present herein a case of sporadic Burkitt lymphoma occurring in a previously healthy HIV-negative male. The unusual clinical findings in this case include the relatively older age at presentation (55 years), an immunocompetent patient who had nodal involvement and leukemic phase of Burkitt, coupled with partial deafness. A brief educational review of this neoplasm is made.

Abstract Current approaches to project spatial biodiversity responses to climate change mainly focus on the direct effects of climate on species while regarding land use and land cover as constant or prescribed by global land‐use scenarios. However, local land‐use decisions are often affected by climate change and biodiversity on top of socioeconomic and policy drivers. To realistically understand and predict climate impacts on biodiversity, it is, therefore, necessary to integrate both direct and indirect effects (via climate‐driven land‐use change) of climate change on biodiversity. In this perspective paper, we outline how biodiversity models could be better integrated with regional, climate‐driven land‐use models. We initially provide a short, non‐exhaustive review of empirical and modelling approaches to land‐use and land‐cover change (LU) and biodiversity (BD) change at regional scales, which forms the base for our perspective about improved integration of LU and BD models. We consider a diversity of approaches, with a special emphasis on mechanistic models. We also look at current levels of integration and at model properties, such as scales, inputs and outputs, to further identify integration challenges and opportunities. We find that LU integration in BD models is more frequent than the other way around and has been achieved at different levels: from overlapping predictions to simultaneously coupled simulations (i.e. bidirectional effects). Of the integrated LU‐BD socio‐ecological models, some studies included climate change effects on LU, but the relative contribution of direct vs. indirect effects of climate change on BD remains a key research challenge. Important research avenues include concerted efforts in harmonizing spatial and temporal resolution, disentangling direct and indirect effects of climate change on biodiversity, explicitly accounting for bidirectional feedbacks, and ultimately feeding socio‐ecological systems back into climate predictions. These avenues can be navigated by matching models, plugins for format and resolution conversion, and increasing the land‐use forecast horizon with adequate uncertainty. Purpose – This work analyzes, through social-environmental reports, whether banks with higher transparency in social-environmental policies better safeguard financial stability in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach – The analysis is carried out through a panel database analysis of the 42 largest Brazilian banks, representing 98% of the Brazilian financial system. Seeking to avoid spurious results, we followed rigorous methodological standards. Hence, we conducted an empirical analysis using a dynamic panel data model, we used the difference generalized method of moments (D-GMM) and the system generalized method of moments (S-GMM). Findings – The results show that the higher the transparency of social-environmental policies, the lower the chance of possible stress on the financial stability of Brazilian banks. In sum, this study builds evidence that disclosing risks related to policies about sustainability can enhance financial stability. It is essential to highlight that social-environmental transparency does not have as direct objective financial stability. Originality/value – The manuscript submitted represents an original work that analyzes whether banks with higher transparency in social-environmental policies better safeguard financial stability. Some countries, such as Brazil, have their potential for sustainable policies spotlighted due to their green territory and diverse natural ecosystems. Besides having green potential, Brazil is a developing country with a well-developed financial system. These characteristics make Brazil one of the best laboratories for studying the relationship between transparency in social-environmental policies and financial stability.

In this study, we focused on the occurrence of respiratory disorders in rabbit farms, as well as several risk factors. We based the assessment on 11 217 visits to 1288 commercial farms in Spain and Portugal from 1996 to 2020. There was a sub-set of 307 visits due to respiratory system issues on 172 farms; the main causes were high prevalence of rhinitis in does and high mortality risk in weaned rabbits. During the 25-yr observational study, we physically examined 29 000 males and 200 000 lactating does to monitor their sanitary status on 894 farms. The mean annual prevalence of clinical rhinitis (CR) and 95% binomial confidence interval (CI) in does was 19.9% (95% CI [19.7-20.1%]). We observed an improvement as prevalence of annual CR fell from 29.6% in 1996 to 15.2% in 2020. The main risk factor for rhinitis was the rabbit line, followed by gender (males become sick more than females) and age of females. The median age of farmed does was 5 parities (minimum to maximum: 1-39). The enabling risk factors were year, season (more often affected in summer) and service timing (lowest prevalence when does were served ≥32 d postpartum). In a sub-set of 208 farms, we determined the prevalence of apparent atrophic rhinitis, which was 0.04% in females and 0.11% in males. Concerning bacteriological studies with 444 samples from 153 farms, Pasteurella multocida and Staphylococcus aureus were the main agents isolated from cases of pneumonia, rhinitis and other issues. We may infer that much work is required to determine in greater detail the factors linked to the farm environment and apply this knowledge in practice.

Walking is an important and popular form of physical activity for health, whose trends of decline among Brazilian adolescents over the years remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to analyze the secular trend and sociodemographic correlates of walking among adolescents in southern Brazil (2007–2017/18). Two cross-sectional surveys, conducted in 2007 and 2017/18, gathered data from 1967 adolescents in Florianopolis, Brazil, using a standard protocol. We collected data on the weekly frequency and duration of walking practice. Gender, age, and socioeconomic status (SES) were modeled in logistic regression analysis. Overall, the weekly volume (time) spent walking declined by 43.1% over the years. In all gender, age, and SES subgroups, walking declined from 31.5% to 51.7%. Compared to 2007 adolescents, girls (OR: 4.14; 95% CI: 2.66–6.43), younger adolescents (15 years: OR: 3.23; 95% CI: 1.74–5, 98; 16 years: OR: 4.36; 95% CI: 2.66–7.15) and those with low SES (OR: 3.48; 95% CI: 2.13–5.68) and high SES (OR: 3.39; 95% CI: 2.21–5.20) were the 2017/18 groups most likely to be inactive on the walk. This study reveals a decline in walking among adolescents in southern Brazil, affecting all analyzed sociodemographic groups. Girls, younger adolescents, and individuals from both ends of the socioeconomic spectrum showed higher probabilities of inactivity in this form of physical activity. Targeted public policies aimed at promoting walking and addressing the specific needs of girls, youth, and various socioeconomic groups are necessary.

Listeria monocytogenes poses a threat to both human and animal health. This work describes an L. monocytogenes outbreak in a Portuguese rabbit farm, detailing the isolates’ clinical manifestations, necropsy findings, and phenotypic and genomic profiles. Clinical signs, exclusively observed in does, included lethargy and reproductive signs. Post-mortem examination of does revealed splenomegaly, hepatomegaly with a reticular pattern, pulmonary congestion, and haemorrhagic lesions in the uterus, with thickening of the uterine wall and purulent greyish exudates. Positive L. monocytogenes samples were identified in fattening and maternity units across different samples, encompassing does and environmental samples. Core-genome Multi Locus Sequence Typing (cgMLST) analysis confirmed the outbreak, with the 16 sequenced isolates (lineage II, CC31, and ST325) clustering within a ≤2 allelic difference (AD) threshold. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing for five antibiotics revealed that 15 out of 19 outbreak isolates were resistant to sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT). Concordantly, all SXT-resistant sequenced isolates were found to exclusively harbour a plasmid containing a trimethoprim-resistance gene (dfrD), along with loci linked to resistance to lincosamides (lnuG), macrolides (mphB), and polyether ionophores (NarAB operon). All sequenced outbreak isolates carried the antibiotic resistance-related genes tetM, fosX, lin, norB, lmrB, sul, and mprF. The outbreak cluster comprises isolates from does and the environment, which underscores the ubiquitous presence of L. monocytogenes and emphasizes the importance of biosecurity measures. Despite limited data on listeriosis in rabbit farming, this outbreak reveals its significant impact on animal welfare and production.

Computational three-dimensional modelling can be used to reconstruct real-world objects with all their details and conservation conditions. Photogrammetry offers products with accuracy, in addition to the flexibility of execution of simple and complex projects, according to the simplicity and speed in data acquisition. The three-dimensional (3D) and georeferenced modelling allows the documentation of the object that was mapped by means of the location. This paper presents a methodology based on topographic and geodetic techniques with georeferencing applied to three-dimensional modelling of architectural forms with the use of digital close-range photogrammetry. The measurements made on the digital product obtained and the same measurements made using precision topography were compared considering the conversion of coordinates to the same projection and reference systems. Finally, the statistical validation and quantification in terms of the positional accuracy of the final product were performed.

Abstract A 47‐year‐old woman presented with the complaint of sudden hearing loss associated with vertigo. Serological testing was positive for IgM and negative for IgG COVID‐19 antibodies, with no other associated factors. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed bilateral intralabyrinthine hemorrhage.

Neurological complications are frequently reported in an intensive care unit (ICU), as a manifestation of a critical systemic illness or of its treatment. On the specific setting of COVID-19 patients, peripheral nerve lesions can have a multiplicity of causes, such as post-infectious neuropathy, positioning-related neuropathy or iatrogeny. An unusual but potentially disabling complication of any peripheral nerve lesion is Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). Although there have been no mechanistic studies assessing how SARS-CoV-2 might directly impact nociception, it is hypothesized that the systemic hyperinflammation seen in severe COVID-19 may contribute to peripheral and central neuronal sensitization, possibly increasing the risk of developing CRPS. This case report highlights the potential hazards and consequences of peripheral nerve injuries on an ICU setting in COVID-19 patients, as well as the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for an early diagnosis and treatment, which are directly related to a better prognosis.

Fifteen extant species of cats inhabit India, and the northeastern region of the country is among the richest with nine species. Among these are the “standard four”, an assemblage of Clouded Leopard Neofelis nebulosa, Asiatic Golden Cat Catopuma temminckii, Marbled Cat Pardofelis marmorata, and Leopard Cat Prionailurus bengalensis, which also occur across southeastern Asia. Within India, despite several surveys in this region, very little information exists on the ecology of this assemblage to explain their co-occurrence. In this paper, we put together data from several independent camera trapping studies over 10 sites across northeastern India to examine and interpret diel activity patterns of this group. While we present results for all the four species, we focus on two species, the Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat, which are of very similar body size and are potential competitors. We used kernel density estimates to measure diel activity patterns of all four species and overlap in activity between Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat at the regional scale as well as the point scale. We obtained 783 captures of the standard four from >27,500 trap nights. The Asiatic Golden Cat and Marbled Cat were strongly diurnal, Clouded Leopard largely crepuscular and nocturnal, and Leopard Cat largely nocturnal. The degree of overlap between Marbled Cat and Leopard Cat activity was low and in consensus with other studies across southeastern Asia. We interpret this as the differing niche spaces of the two cats due to their specific pre-existing adaptations, not restricted to the effects of competition. The point scale analysis when both cats are captured at the same location and separately show no shift in activity pattern, supporting our hypothesis of pre-existing differences in resources, such as food, playing a major role in facilitating co-existence. Our study, however, is preliminary and additional information with robust analysis is required to test this finding.

AbstractBackground MultiLayer Bandages (MLB) assume a prominent role in the physical treatment of lymphedema, being an integral part of decongestant lymphatic therapy. This, according to the International Society of Lymphology, consists of a reduction phase and a maintenance phase and includes procedures such as: hygiene care, manual lymphatic drainage, multi-layered bandages, exercise, and elastic compression [1]. Although MLBs are widely used in the treatment of lymphedema, and the physical principles underlying their therapeutic efficacy are well known [2], the mechanism of action regarding the thermal effect has not been clearly defined. When applied, they cause an rise in skin temperature [3], and during exercise this temperature further increases due to the intensification in metabolic activity and heat production [4,5], but there is no actual data regarding the temperature values and its variation (3). The aim of this study was to evaluate the cutaneous temperature of the upper limb when submitted to the application of MLB during physical exercise of moderate intensity [4], and clarify if the temperature is an obstacle to its use, when compared to the upper limb skin reference value.Methods A quasi-experimental study was designed with a sample of 30 individuals (without known pathology). All participants signed an informed consent and the study followed all the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. The individuals were submitted to the application of a temperature-bioPLUX research sensor in the external region of both forearms. The experimental group (EG) was considered to be the dominant upper limb submitted to MLB application and the control group the contralateral upper limb. The temperature was recorded in 4 evaluation moments: at rest, before and after MLB application, during exercise on an elliptical trainer (until the individual reached 69% of the Maximum Heart Rate) and after cessation of exercise (when the rest Heart Rate was reached). Descriptive statistics were used to characterise the sample, using inferential statistics to analyse the research questions. The results were considered significant at the significance level of 5% and the statistical program SPSS v23.0 was used.Results At the first evaluation moment of at rest and without band, no statistically significant differences between the groups were detected. The experimental group had 32.8 ± 0.85˚C and the control group 32.7 ± 0.81˚C (p = .088). Background: This study aims to analyze the effects of anti-hypertensive monotherapy and combined therapy on functional status, and cardiovascular risk outcomes in older adults. Methods: This longitudinal non-randomized cohort study, involved hypertensive older adults (n = 440) aged 60 or more years with comorbidities. Participants underwent a community exercise training program and one of the following 2 conditions: i) use of daily mono-dose angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi; n= 232); ii) combined therapy including ACEi plus other class agent (Combined; n= 208). Baseline and 2-year follow-up evaluations included the functional fitness, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), health history questionnaires, anthropometric and hemodynamic profile. Results: Both experimental groups have significantly improved physical functional status, and have significantly decreased blood pressure and waist circumference. ACEi group has significantly reduced body mass and body mass index, the Combined group significantly reduced the waist-to-hip ratio. Additionally, both groups perceived better physical HRQoL. Conclusions: Functional status has improved with ACEi medication and exercise training, regardless the ACEi medication therapy. Exercise training plus ACEi antihypertensive therapy should be recommended into the standard prescription practice to reduce the rate of physical disability among hypertensive older adults.

Abstract Background Non-falciparum malaria (NFM) has been reported to be responsible for around 25% of imported malaria cases in Europe but is often neglected due to its less severe clinical course when compared to Plasmodium falciparum. Differentiation between species is however crucial for a correct approach. The objective of this study is to report the cases of this often missed aetiology of malaria in a tertiary hospital in Portugal. Methods Data were retrospectively analysed from patients admitted from January 2006 to August 2016 with a NFM diagnosis based on microscopy, rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) (BinaxNow®) and/or PCR. Epidemiologic and clinical aspects were reviewed. Results A total of 19 NFM cases were diagnosed, corresponding to 8.4% of the total 225 cases of malaria. Seventeen (89%) were male with a median age of 41 years. All but one case were imported from sub-Saharan Africa, with 12 (63%) of the cases returned from Angola. Microscopy was positive for all patients and correctly identified the species in 12 (63%) patients. BinaxNOW® was performed in all patients and it was positive in 11 cases, showing a sensitivity of 58%. PCR was performed in nine patients and was positive in eight of them, being responsible for the identification of the species in four cases. Plasmodium malariae accounted for 37% (n = 7) of the cases, Plasmodium ovale for 32% (n = 6) and Plasmodium vivax for 17% (n = 3). In three (16%) patients, morphology was suggestive of P. vivax or P. ovale, but precise species identification was not possible. Regarding presentation, fever was the most reported symptom, and the most frequent laboratory finding was thrombocytopaenia. Quinine–doxycycline was prescribed in eleven patients (58%), chloroquine in six cases (32%) and artemether–lumefantrine in two (11%). All of the patients showed clinical improvement. Conclusions NFM remains an important cause of imported malaria in patients from sub-Saharan Africa, alone or as mixed infection with P. falciparum. Access to PCR techniques facilitates diagnosis, as low sensitivity from RDTs and microscopy are to be expected.

Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os fatores associados à baixa duração do sono em adolescentes amazonenses. Trata-se de um estudo epidemiológico transversal conduzido em 2.517 adolescentes (1.106 do sexo masculino e 1.411 do sexo feminino) com idades de 14 a 19 anos, matriculados em escolas públicas de ensino médio no estado do Amazonas. Além da baixa duração do sono (< oito horas/dia) foram investigadas informações sobre sexo, faixa etária, ano escolar, turno escolar, renda familiar, situação ocupacional e atividade física. Associações entre a baixa duração de sono com as demais variáveis foram analisadas por meio da regressão de Poisson. A prevalência de baixa duração de sono encontrada nos adolescentes amazonenses foi de (51,2%; IC95%= 49,2-52,9). Os adolescentes mais velhos de 18 a 19 anos (RP= 1,14; IC95%= 1,01-1,29), que estudam no turno matutino (RP= 1,37; IC95%= 1,25-1,48) e noturno (RP= 1,16; IC95%= 1,04-1,28), os que trabalham (RP= 1,34; IC95%= 1,23-1,45) e são inativos fisicamente (RP=1,27; IC95%= 1,06-1,53) apresentaram risco para a baixa duração do sono. Os resultados evidenciam que fatores biológicos, comportamentais e ambientais são fatores importantes para a duração do sono dos adolescentes.

O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar as barreiras percebidas para a prática de atividade física entre universitários de Educação Física de Florianópolis, e testar a associação dessas barreiras percebidas com o nível de atividade física entre os cursos de Bacharelado e Licenciatura em Educação Física. Participaram 301 universitários (173 homens e 128 mulheres) do curso de Educação Física (161 da Licenciatura e 140 do Bacharelado), com média de idade de 23,1(4,9) anos. Foram coletadas informações sociodemográficas, prática de atividade física (Estágios de Mudança de Comportamento relacionados à Atividade Física) e barreiras percebidas. As barreiras foram analisadas individualmente e agrupadas em domínios (ambiental, comportamental, físico e social). Associações entre barreiras percebidas (por domínios) e prática de atividades físicas foram testadas por meio de Regressão de Poisson. As principais barreiras percebidas pelos universitários, de ambos os cursos, foram jornada de trabalho extensa (Bacharelado= 16,5%, Licenciatura= 30,4%), falta de energia (Bacharelado= 11,5%, Licenciatura= 10,6%) e falta de companhia (Bacharelado= 7,2%, Licenciatura= 8,9%). As barreiras do domínio social estiveram associadas à inatividade física no Bacharelado (RP= 3,17; IC95%= 1,52-6,60) e na Licenciatura (RP= 1,89; IC95%= 1,14-3,13). Conclui-se que as barreiras mais prevalentes foram jornada de trabalho extensa, falta de energia e falta de companhia. Quando agrupadas por domínios, as sociais, em ambos os cursos, estiveram associadas à inatividade física. Ações devem ser voltadas a esses aspectos para diminuir seu impacto na tomada de decisão sobre a prática de atividades físicas.

A expansão da mancha urbana sem controle produz distorções intensas na composição da paisagem, gerando diversos passivos como a degradação dos recursos naturais, o agravamento e elevação dos setores de áreas de risco, bem como problemas de movimentos de massa. A Região Metropolitana do Recife é o maior aglomerado urbano norte-nordeste, tendo Recife como município núcleo com maior percentual e densidade de setores com aglomerados subnormais. Assim, este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a dinâmica da suscetibilidade a movimentos de massa nos setores de risco inseridos nas microrregiões de Jordão e Ibura, Recife-PE, empregando modelagem espacial multicritério baseado no Processo Analítico Hierárquico (AHP), utilizando ortofotocartas para obter informações sobre a dinâmica do uso e cobertura do solo. Após a análise da modelagem multitemporal (2007 - 2013) da suscetibilidade a movimentos de massa, obtiveram-se os seguintes resultados: áreas com suscetibilidade baixa obtiveram redução de 4,42%, áreas com suscetibilidade média tiveram acréscimo de 0,57% e áreas com suscetibilidade alta tiveram elevação de 3,84%.

As the Internet evolved, social networks (such as Facebook) have bloomed and brought together an astonishing number of users. Mashing up mobile phones and sensors with these social environments enables the creation of people-centric sensing systems which have great potential for expanding our current social networking usage. However, such systems also have many associated technical challenges, such as privacy concerns, activity detection mechanisms or intermittent connectivity, as well as limitations due to the heterogeneity of sensor nodes and networks. Considering the openness of the Web 2.0, good technical solutions for these cases consist of frameworks that expose sensing data and functionalities as common Web-Services. This paper presents our RESTful Web Service-based model for people-centric sensing frameworks, which uses sensors and mobile phones to detect users’ activities and locations, sharing this information amongst the user’s friends within a social networking site. We also present some screenshot results of our experimental prototype.

Os impactos ambientais proporcionados ou intensificados pela ação antrópica contribuíram para a inserção da ecologia no pensamento e sentimento jurídicos coletivos. Nessa seara, observou-se, no desenrolar dos últimos decênios, a constitucionalização de inúmeras prerrogativas em matéria ambiental, indubitavelmente relevantes à tutela dos patrimônios naturais e paisagísticos. Nesse contexto, buscou-se, por meio deste trabalho, uma análise do processo de soerguimento e consolidação do Estado protetor do ambiente tanto na ordem jurídica brasileira quanto na portuguesa, ladeada por um estudo comparativo e constitucional dos princípios a ele concernentes.

The objective of this study was to analyse the effects of propylene glycol (PPG) supplementation to periparturient cows on: milk yield, changes in body condition score (BCS), days to first oestrus after calving, and on the beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), non-esterefied fatty acids (NEFA) and glucose concentrations. Twenty-three Holstein cows were distributed into two treatments: a) 300 mL of PPG (group treatment, 11 cows), b) 300 mL of water (group control, 12 cows), administered via drench in periparturient period. BCS was evaluated on days -10, 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 relative to calving date. There was no effect of treatment or time on milk yield, although the interaction of time*treatment was significant and during the 4th and 5th week of lactation, milk yield was significant higher in treatment group. Days to first oestrus of PPG and control group were on average 40.2 and 45.2 respectively (P>0.05). There was no effect of treatment on body condition score (BCS) from calving to sixty days post partum. There was no effect of treatment or interaction of time*treatment on plasma parameters (BHBA, NEFA and glucose) but there was an effect of time on glucose and NEFA. However, based on an analysis of covariance, using BCS as the covariate, an effect of treatment on plasma concentrations of BHBA was observed. In conclusion, supplementation of propyleneglycol has a minor effect to alleviate the negative metabolic effects that normally occur at early lactation in dairy cows.

Foi objetivo deste estudo analisar os efeitos da suplementação de propilenoglicol para vacas em lactação sob a ocorrência de cetose e as suas conseqüências na: a) produção de leite; e b) variação do escore de condição de corporal e primeiro estro pós-parto. Vinte e três vacas da raça Holandesa foram alocadas em dois tratamentos: 1) 300mL de propilenoglicol (grupo tratamento, 11 vacas), 2) 300 ml de água (grupo controle, 12 vacas), administrados através de beberagem no período peri-parto. Foram colhidas amostras de plasma para análise de ß-hidroxibutirato e realizada a avaliação do escore de condição (ECC) corporal. A incidência de cetose subclínica foi de 9,1% e 33,5%; o primeiro estro pós-parto foi em média 40,18 e 45,17 dias no grupo tratamento e controle, respectivamente. Não houve efeito do tratamento ou tempo sobre produção de leite, embora a interação tempo tratamento foi significativa. O ECC do grupo tratamento foi maior que o do grupo controle, mas não sofreu variação nos primeiros 60 dias de lactação.
