Abstract

This paper builds on an agreement coefficient proposed by Krippendorff (Content analysis: an introduction to its methodology, 2013) for measuring the reliability of unitizing and coding continuous phenomena, for example, of texts, videos, or sound recordings. It serves three purposes: It modifies Krippendorff’s definition which turned out to behave not as expected when applied to more than two observers, coders, or annotators. It extends this reliability measure to a family of four coefficients able to assess the reliabilities of diverse properties of unitized continua. It adds a way to obtain the confidence intervals of these coefficients as well as the probability of failing to reach targeted reliability levels. And it describes and provides access to free software that calculates all values of this family of reliability coefficients.

Most of this data rely on well known and established standards, such as TEI, which especially enable scientists to edit and publish their work. However, one of the remaining problems is to give adequate access to this rich data, in order to produce higher-order knowledge.In this paper, we present an integrated environment combining an advanced search engine and text-mining techniques for hermeneutics in Digital Humanities. Relying on semantic web technologies, the search engine uses full text as well as complex embedding structures and offers a single interface to access rich and heterogeneous data and meta-data. Text-mining possibilities enable scholars to exhibit regularities in corpora. Results obtained on the Cartesian corpus illustrate these principles and tools.

Abstract

International audience; Computing inter-annotator agreement measures on a manually annotated corpus is necessary to evaluate the reliability of its annotation. However, the interpretation of the obtained results is recognized as highly arbitrary. We describe in this article a method and a tool that we developed which "shuffles" a reference annotation according to different error paradigms, thereby creating artificial annotations with controlled errors. Agreement measures are computed on these corpora, and the obtained results are used to model the behavior of these measures and understand their actual meaning.

Abstract

International audience; Corpus linguistics and Natural Language Processing make it necessary to produce and share reference annotations to which linguistic and computational models can be compared. Creating such resources requires a formal framework supporting description of heterogeneous linguistic objects and structures, appropriate representation formats, and adequate manual annotation tools, making it possible to locate, identify and describe linguistic phenomena in textual documents. The Glozz platform addresses all these needs, and provides a highly versatile corpus annotation tool with advanced visualization, querying and evaluation possibilities.
