The study of lateral steering control for Automated Driving Systems identifies new control solutions more often than new control problems. This is likely due to the maturity of the field. To prevent repeating efforts toward solving already-solved problems, what is needed is a cohesive way of evaluating all developed controllers under a wide variety of environmental conditions. This work serves as a step in this direction. Four controllers are tested on five maneuvers representing highways and collision avoidance trajectories. Each controller and maneuver combination is repeated on five sets of environmental conditions or Operational Design Domains (ODDs). The design of these ODDs ensures the translation of these experimental results to real-world applications. The commercial software, CarSim 2020, is extended with Simulink models of the environment, sensor dynamics, and state estimation performances to perform highly repeatable and realistic evaluations of each controller. The results of this work demonstrate that most of the combinations of maneuvers and ODDs have existing cheap controllers that achieve satisfactorily safe performance. Therefore, this field's research efforts should be directed toward finding new control problems in lateral path tracking rather than proposing new controllers for ODDs that are already solved. This research investigates the development of risk-based performance requirements for the control of an automated driving system (ADS). The proposed method begins by determining the target level of safety for the virtual driver of an ADS. The underlying assumptions are informed by existing data. Next, geometric models of the road and vehicle are used to derive deterministic performance levels of the virtual driver. To integrate the risk and performance requirements seamlessly, we propose new definitions for errors associated with the planner, pose, and control modules. These definitions facilitate the derivation of stochastic performance requirements for each module, thus ensuring an overall target level of safety. Notably, these definitions enable real-time controller performance monitoring, thus potentially enabling fault detection linked to the system's overall safety target. At a high level, this approach argues that the requirements for the virtual driver's modules should be designed simultaneously. To illustrate this approach, this technique is applied to a research project available in the literature that developed an automated steering system for an articulated bus. This example shows that the method generates achievable performance requirements that are verifiable through experimental testing and highlights the importance in validating the underlying assumptions for effective risk management. Due to the transition toward the Internet of Everything (IOE), the prediction of energy consumed by household appliances has become a progressively more difficult topic to model. Even with advancements in data analytics and machine learning, several challenges remain to be addressed. Therefore, providing highly accurate and optimized models has become the primary research goal of many studies. This paper analyzes appliance energy consumption through a variety of machine learning-based strategies. Utilizing data recorded from a single-family home, input variables comprised internal temperatures and humidities, lighting consumption, and outdoor conditions including wind speed, visibility, and pressure. Various models were trained and evaluated: (a) multiple linear regression, (b) support vector regression, (c) random forest, (d) gradient boosting, (e) xgboost, and (f) the extra trees regressor. Both feature engineering and hyperparameter tuning methodologies were applied to not only extend existing features but also create new ones that provided improved model performance across all metrics: root mean square error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The best model (extra trees) was able to explain 99% of the variance in the training set and 66% in the testing set when using all the predictors. The results were compared with those obtained using a similar methodology. The objective of performing these actions was to show a unique perspective in simulating building performance through data-driven models, identifying how to maximize predictive performance through the use of machine learning-based strategies, as well as understanding the potential benefits of utilizing different models. Active differentials are used to improve the overall performance of traction control and vehicle dynamics control systems. This paper presents the development of a unified mathematical model of active differential dynamics using the bond graph modeling technique. The study includes active limited slip differential and various common types of torque vectoring differentials. Different levels of model complexity are considered, starting from a second-order model with lumped input and output inertia toward higher-order models including the gear inertia and half-shaft compliance. The model is used for a theoretical analysis of drivability and time response characteristics of the active differential dynamics. The analysis is illustrated by simulation results. In the past, there have been many inconsistent attempts to describe the bandwidth of dynamic systems. Similar definitions of bandwidth have been extended to describe not only the closed-loop bandwidth of feedback control systems but also the frequency at which usefulness of feedback is lost. In this work, we propose and explain the need for a new precise measure for bandwidth that could be used to describe the cut-off frequency at which the feedback control system's usefulness is no longer advantageous. The tools of neoclassical control are used to define this new measure of bandwidth as the frequency at which the feedback controller ceases to affect the response. Hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) control strategies are often designed around specific driving conditions. However, when driving conditions differ from the designed conditions, HEV performance can suffer. This paper develops a novel HEV energy management strategy (EMS) that is robust to uncertain driving conditions by augmenting a stochastic dynamic programing (SDP) controller with minimax dynamic programing (MDP). This combination of MDP and SDP has not previously been studied in the literature. The stochastic element uses a Markov chain model to represent driver behavior and is used to optimize the control for expected future driver behavior. The minimax element instead optimizes against potential worst-case (maximal cost) future driver behavior. The resulting EMS can be directly implemented on a vehicle. This method is demonstrated on a series hybrid electric bus model. Robustness to uncertain driving conditions is tested by simulating on a variety of heavy-duty vehicle drive cycles that differ from the drive cycle on which the EMS was trained. A single tuning parameter is used to balance the stochastic and minimax elements of the EMS, and a parametric study shows the effects of this tuning parameter. It was found that using minimax control could increase the vehicle fuel economy on multiple uncertain driving conditions, with a tradeoff of decreased fuel economy when the driving conditions match the designed conditions. The differential drive assist steering (DDAS) system improves the handiness of steering by torque difference between two-side wheels. However, the DDAS and the vehicle stability control (VSC) will interfere with each other due to the same actuators. This paper proposes a hierarchical coordination control approach for the DDAS and VSC. The system is divided into four layers: the parameter estimation layer, the control region division layer, the coordination decision layer, and the control allocation layer. In the control region division layer, the stable area is firstly determined on the $\beta - \dot{\beta }$ phase portrait, and the coordinated control region is obtained by applying the simulated annealing algorithm inwardly and outwardly to the boundary of the stable area. In the coordination decision layer, the direct control strategy of steering hand wheel torque is used to establish the controller of the DDAS based on the fuzzy adaptive PID algorithm. At the same time, the controller of yaw moment is established based on the sliding mode control theory. In the stable region, the DDAS works separately. The VSC works separately in the unstable region. In the coordination region, the Sigmoid function is used to adjust the weight coefficient of the DDAS dynamically. Besides, the control allocation layer includes torque distribution controller and vehicle slip ratio controller. Finally, the vehicle model is established in CarSim, the control strategy, and the wheel motor model are established in Simulink. The joint simulation results of several typical conditions show that the designed control strategy can improve the handling stability of the vehicle effectively while DDAS working even in severe driving condition. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) offer improved fuel efficiency compared to their conventional counterparts at the expense of adding complexity and at times, reduced total power. As a result, HEV generally lack the dynamic performance that customers enjoy. To address this issue, the paper presents a HEV with electric all-wheel drive (eAWD) capabilities via the use of a torque vectoring electric rear axle drive (TVeRAD) unit to power the rear axle. The addition of TVeRAD to a front wheel drive HEV improves the total power output. To further improve the handling characteristics of the vehicle, the TVeRAD unit allows for wheel torque vectoring (TV) at the rear axle. A bond graph model of the proposed drivetrain model is developed and used in cosimulation with carsim. The paper proposes a control system, which utilizes slip ratio optimization to allocate control to each tire. The optimization algorithm is used to obtain optimal slip ratio targets to at each tire such that the targets avoid tire saturation. The Youla parameterization technique is used to develop robust tracking controllers for each axle. The proposed control system is ultimately tested on the drivetrain model with a high fidelity carsim vehicle model for validation. Simulation results show that the control system is able to maximize vehicle longitudinal performance while avoiding tire saturation on a low µ surface. More importantly, the control system is able to track the desired yaw moment request on a high-speed double-lane change (DLC) maneuver through the use of the TVeRAD to improve the handling characteristic of the vehicle. Youla parametrization is a well-established technique in deriving single-input single-output (SISO) and, to a lesser extent, multiple-input multiple-ouput (MIMO) controllers (Youla, D., Bongiorno, J. J., Jr., and Lu, C., 1974, "Singleloop Feedback-Stabilization of Linear Multivariable Dynamical Plants," Automatica, 10(2), pp. 159-173). However, the utility of this methodology in estimation design, specifically in the framework of controller output observer (COO) (Ozkan, B., Margolis, D., and Pengov, M., 2008, "The Controller Output Observer: Estimation of Vehicle Tire Cornering and Normal Forces," ASME J. Dyn. Syst., Meas., Control, 130(6), p. 061002), is not established. The fundamental question to be answered is as follows: is it possible to design a deterministic estimation technique using Youla paramertization with the same robust performance, or better, than well-established stochastic estimation techniques such as Kalman filtering? To prove this point, at this stage, a comparative analysis between Youla parametrization in estimation and Kalman filtering is performed through simulations only. In this paper, we provide an overview of Youla parametrization for both control and estimation design. We develop a deterministic SISO and MIMO Youla estimation technique in the framework of COO, and we investigate the utility of this method for two applications in the automotive domain. Heavy-duty electric powertrains provide a potential solution to the high emissions and low fuel economy of trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles. However, the cost, weight, and lifespan of electric vehicle batteries limit the implementation of such vehicles. This paper proposes supplementing the battery with on-board photovoltaic modules. In this paper, a bus model is created to analyze the impact of on-board photovoltaics on electric bus range and battery lifespan. Photovoltaic systems that cover the bus roof and bus sides are considered. The bus model is simulated on a suburban bus drive cycle on a bus route in Davis, CA, USA for a representative sample of yearly weather conditions. Roof-mounted panels increased vehicle driving range by 4.7% on average annually, while roof and side modules together increased driving range by 8.9%. However, variations in weather conditions meant that this additional range was not reliably available. For constant vehicle range, rooftop photovoltaic modules extended battery cycle life by up to 10% while modules on both the roof and sides extended battery cycle life by up to 19%. Electric vehicles are becoming more popular in the market. To be competitive, manufacturers need to produce vehicles with a low energy consumption, a good range and an acceptable driving performance. These are dependent on the choice of components and the topology in which they are used. In a conventional gasoline vehicle, the powertrain topology is constrained to a few well-understood layouts; these typically consist of a single engine driving one axle or both axles through a multi-ratio gearbox. With electric vehicles, there is more flexibility, and the design space is relatively unexplored. In this paper, we evaluate several different topologies as follows: a traditional topology using a single electric motor driving a single axle with a fixed gear ratio; a topology using separate motors for the front axle and the rear axle, each with its own fixed gear ratio; a topology using in-wheel motors on a single axle; a four-wheel-drive topology using in-wheel motors on both axes. Multi-objective optimisation techniques are used to find the optimal component sizing for a given requirement set and to investigate the trade-offs between the energy consumption, the powertrain cost and the acceleration performance. When vehicle manufacturers are developing new hybrid and electric vehicles, modeling and simulation are frequently used to predict the performance of the new vehicles from an early stage in the product lifecycle. Typically, models are used to predict the range, performance and energy consumption of their future planned production vehicle; they also allow the designer to optimize a vehicle's configuration. Another use for the models is in performing sensitivity analysis, which helps us understand which parameters have the most influence on model predictions and real-world behaviors. There are various techniques for sensitivity analysis, some are numerical, but the greatest insights are obtained analytically with sensitivity defined in terms of partial derivatives. Existing methods in the literature give us a useful, quantified measure of parameter sensitivity, a first-order effect, but they do not consider second-order effects. Second-order effects could give us additional insights: for example, a first order analysis might tell us that a limiting factor is the efficiency of the vehicle's prime-mover; our new second order analysis will tell us how quickly the efficiency of the powertrain will become of greater significance. In this paper, we develop a method based on formal optimization mathematics for rapid second-order sensitivity analyses and illustrate these through a case study on a C-segment electric vehicle. With a myriad of alternative vehicle powertrain architectures emerging in the industry, such as electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles, it is beneficial that the most appropriate system is chosen for the desired vehicle class and duty cycle, and to minimize a given cost function. This paper investigates this issue, by proposing a novel framework that evaluates different types of powertrain architectures under a unified modular powertrain structure. This framework provides a systematic and objective approach to comparing different types of powertrain architectures simultaneously, and will highlight the benefits that can be achieved from each architecture, thus making it possible to develop the reasoning for manufacturers to implement such systems, and potentially accelerate customer take-up of alternative powertrain technology. The results from this investigation have indicated that such analysis is indeed possible, by way of identifying the "cross-over point" between powertrain architectures, where one powertrain architecture transitions into a different architecture with increments in the required travel range. Since the automotive industry is shifting towards electrification, brake-by-wire technologies are becoming more prevalent. However, there has been little research comparing and optimizing brake-by-wire actuators in terms of their energy expenditure and response time. This paper investigates the comparison of three different smart brake-by-wire actuators, Electro-Hydraulic Brakes (EHB), Electro-Mechanical Brakes (EMB), and Electronic Wedge Brakes (EWB), first by defining an objective metric and then using both linear and nonlinear optimization techniques. Modeling of the actuators is performed using the bond graph method. Then, the controllers are designed using a robust control strategy, Youla parameterization. After designing the controllers, two types of optimization are performed on the actuators. Optimizations are performed in two ways: 1. by linearizing the plants and optimizing using their transfer functions and 2. by nonlinear optimization of the plants in the closed-loop following a specific clamp force target. The objective metrics or the cost functions for these optimizations are chosen to be the energy usage of the plants during the closed-loop operation, maximum power requirement, and their dynamic responsiveness. Using this optimization framework, we can show a significant improvement in the energy usage of the actuators and slight improvements in their responsiveness. Hybrid and electric vehicle batteries deteriorate from use due to irreversible internal chemical and mechanical changes, resulting in decreased capacity and efficiency of the energy storage system. This article investigates the modeling and control of a lithium-ion battery and ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system for an electric vehicle for improved battery lifespan and energy consumption. By developing a control-oriented aging model for the energy storage components and integrating the aging models into an energy management system, the trade-off between battery degradation and energy consumption can be minimized. This article produces an optimal aging-aware energy management strategy that controls both battery and ultracapacitor aging and compares these results to strategies that control only battery aging, strategies that control battery aging factors but not aging itself, and non-optimal benchmark strategies. A case study on an electric bus with variously-sized hybrid energy storage systems shows that a strategy designed to control battery aging, ultracapacitor aging, and energy losses simultaneously can achieve a 28.2% increase to battery lifespan while requiring only a 7.0% decrease in fuel economy. The adoption of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) is widely seen as an interim solution for the decarbonization of the transport sector. Within a PHEV, determining the required energy storage capacity of the battery remains one of the primary concerns for vehicle manufacturers and system integrators. This fact is particularly pertinent since the battery constitutes the largest contributor to vehicle mass. Furthermore, the financial cost associated with the procurement, design and integration of battery systems is often cited as one of the main barriers to vehicle commercialization. The ability to integrate the optimization of the energy management control system with the sizing of key PHEV powertrain components presents a significant area of research. Contained within this paper is an optimization study in which a charge blended strategy is used to facilitate the downsizing of the electrical machine, the internal combustion engine and the high voltage battery. An improved Equivalent Consumption Method has been used to manage the optimal power split within the powertrain as the PHEV traverses a range of different drivecycles. For a target CO2 value and drivecycle, results show that this approach can yield significant downsizing opportunities, with cost reductions on the order of 2%-9% being realizable. This paper presents a Li-ion cell model parameterization technique for hybrid electric and electric vehicle control applications. The proposed method is based on an equivalent electrical circuit (EEC) model of the Li-ion cell and combines the advantages of the two main strategies employed for cell model parameterization, namely, the offline and online procedures. Offline methods are based on the identification of relevant EEC parameter values using a limited set of test data specific to the target cell chemistry. Conversely, online techniques employ adaptive algorithms that update the cell model as it is being used. The novel method presented in this paper employs recurrent offline updates of the EEC parameterization set, and thus, it integrates the advantages of the offline approach, such as flexibility, reduced complexity, and improved run-time performance, with the main benefit of the online counterpart, which is the capacity to adapt the model parameterization to uncharacterized operating conditions. Based on an extensive set of experimental and simulation results obtained from tests specified in the IEC 62660-1 standard, it is shown that the proposed approach offers a significant accuracy improvement over simple offline methods, as well as enhanced runtime speed in comparison with commonly employed online strategies. The paper presents a gradient-based algorithm for optimal control of nonlinear multivariable systems with control and state vectors constraints. The algorithm has a backward-in-time recurrent structure similar to the backpropagation-through-time algorithm, which is mostly used as a learning algorithm for dynamic neural networks. Other main features of the algorithm include the use of higher order Adams time-discretization schemes, numerical calculation of Jacobians, and advanced conjugate gradient methods for favorable convergence properties. The algorithm performance is illustrated on an example of off-line vehicle dynamics control optimization based on a realistic high-order vehicle model. The optimized control variables are active rear differential torque transfer and active rear steering road wheel angle, while the optimization tasks are trajectory tracking and roll minimization for a double lane change maneuver. Assessing the potential of advanced driver assistance systems requires developing dedicated control algorithms for controlling the longitudinal speed of automated vehicles over time. In this paper, a multiobjective off-line optimal control approach for planning the speed of the following vehicle in adaptive cruise control (ACC) driving is proposed. The implemented method relies on the principle of global optimality fostered by dynamic programming (DP) and aims to minimize propelling energy consumption and enhance passenger comfort. The powertrain model and onboard control system are integrated within the proposed car-following optimization framework. The retained ACC approach ensures that the distance between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle is always maintained within allowed limits. The flexibility of the proposed method is demonstrated here through ease of implementation on a wide range of powertrain categories, including a conventional vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine solely, a pure electric vehicle, a parallel P2 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and a power-split HEV. Moreover, different driving conditions are considered to prove the effectiveness of the proposed optimization-driven ACC approach. Obtained simulation results suggest that up to 22% energy-saving and 48% passenger comfort improvement might be achieved for the ACC-enabled vehicle compared with the preceding vehicle by implementing the proposed optimization-driven ACC approach. Tire normal forces are difficult to measure, but information on the vehicle normal force can be used in many automotive engineering applications, e.g., rollover detection and vehicle and wheel stability. Previous papers use algebraic equations to estimate the tire normal force. In this article, the estimation of tire normal force is formulated as an input estimation problem. Two observers are proposed to solve this problem by using a quarter-car suspension model. First, the Youla Controller Output Observer framework is presented. It converts the estimation problem into a control problem and produces a Youla parameterized controller as observer. Second, a Kalman filter approach is taken and the input estimation problem is addressed with an Unbiased Minimum Variance Filter. Both methods use accelerometer and suspension deflection sensors to determine the vehicle normal force. The differential drive assist steering (DDAS) system makes full use of the advantages of independent control of wheel torque of electric vehicle driven by front in-wheel motors to achieve steering assistance and reduce the steering effort of the driver, as the electric power steering (EPS) system does. However, as an indirect steering assist technology that applies steering system assistance via differential drive, its linear control algorithm, like existing proportion integration differentiation (PID) controllers, cannot take the nonlinear characteristics of the tires' dynamics into account which results in poor performance in road feeling and tracking accuracy. This paper introduces an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) method into the control issue of the DDAS. First, the third-order ADRC controller of the DDAS is designed, and the simulated annealing algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of ADRC controller offline considering that the parameters of ADRC controller are too many and the parameter tuning is complex. Finally, the 11-DOF model of the electric vehicle driven by in-wheel motors is built, and the standard working conditions are selected for simulation and experimental verification. The results show that the ADRC controller designed in this paper can not only obviously reduce the steering wheel effort of the driver like PID controller, but also have better nonlinear control performance in tracking accuracy and smooth road feeling of the driver than the traditional PID controller.
