We provide geographical, spatial and temporal data to the faunistical knowledge of the 123 Microlepidoptera species recorded in the region Sălaj. This is the result of 201 data of 24 collecting events assembled in the period between 25. April, 2014 and 10. September, 2015. The species represent the following families (with species numbers): Alucitidae (2), Autostichidae (1), Coleophoridae (7), Cosmopterigidae (1), Cossidae (1), Depressariidae (2), Epermeniidae (1), Ethmiidae (2), Gelechiidae (5), Gracillariidae (1), Hepialidae (1), Limacodidae (1), Lypusidae (1), Oecophoridae (2), Plutellidae (1), Psychidae (2), Pterophoridae (4), Pyralidae (38), Sesiidae (1), Tineidae (5), Tortricidae (39), Yponomeutidae (1), Ypsolophidae (2), Zygaenidae (2), amongst them 33 species are recorded as new for the region Sălaj.

Fast charged particles interact with matter mainly by interaction with the electron shell of the atoms causing ionization and excitation, i.e. inelastic scattering. However, for lower velocity projectiles an important part of the energy loss is due to elastic scattering on the nuclei, which is called nuclear stopping. In the present paper we calculate the nuclear stopping cross section of protons and antiprotons in different materials. The obtained results are compared with calculations by other groups and with the electronic stopping cross sections. The difference between the results for protons and antiprotons is explained. The penelfin Penaincisalia alina sp. nov. is described from Department Apurímac, Peru on the basis of wing and genitalia characters. Spectral analysis of structural colours carried out on congeneric species is presented. A hitherto unnamed Penaincisalia species from the vicinity of the type locality is also documented. The material of Scopula spp. specimens (n = 1181) in the Hungarian Natural History Museum is revised in the light of recent publications. The museum hosts vouchers of three species from the white-coloured taxa of the "ornata species- group" from the Carpathian Basin and six species from the Palaearctic Region. A historical specimen of S. orientalis, undoubtedly collected in the Carpathian Basin, was found amongst Palaearctic material. This is the first record of this species from the area and its most inland occurrence in Europe. A key to the identification of the three species recorded from the Carpathian Basin is given. The occurrence of a taxon morphologically close to Pseudolucia jujuyensis Bálint, Eisele & Johnson, 2000 is recorded in dry habitats of Torotoro Dinosaurs National Park, Potosí, Bolivia. This record remarkably extends the range of Pseudolucia by almost 800 km northwards in austral South America. Five specimens were available for examinations, hence wing-pattern, genitalia and mitochondrial DNA were analysed. However, the taxonomy of the specimens could not be satisfactorily resolved in relation to P. jujuyensis, for which only the holotype exists. The females use Cuscuta for ovipositing, what is supposedly the larval host - a remarkable character of the chilensis species group of Pseudolucia, which includes P. jujuyensis. On the basis of molecular markers it was revealed that the Torotoro population is the sister to the rest of the chilensis species group, which together are the clade sister to the rest of the genus. Male secondary sexual characters have been discovered on the hindwing verso of genera Aphnaeus Hübner, [1819], Cigaritis Donzel, 1847, Lipaphnaeus Aurivillius, 1916 and Pseudaletis Druce, 1888 representing the Palaeotropical subfamily Aphnaeinae (Lycaenidae: Lepidoptera). The South American hairstreak species Strymon bicolor (Philippi, 1859) and S. heodes (Druce, 1909) are diagnosed and their synonymies are revised. The distribution of S. bicolor is restricted to the Andean-Patagonian region south of the Atacama Desert and represented now in Argentina and Chile by seven available species group names, considered as subjective synonyms. However, some of these names can most probably be considered as valid taxa. A key to identification is given for distinguishing the superficially most similar Strymon species patterned by orange scaling in the dorsal wing surfaces. It is noted that the Austral S. bicolor group and the Central Peruvian S. heodes appear to belong to a mimicry ring inhabiting the dry areas of the Andes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of our study was to investigate the correlation between structural colour and scale morphology in butterflies. Detailed correlations between blue colour and structure were investigated in three lycaenid subfamilies, which represent a monophylum in the butterfly family Lycaenidae (Lepidoptera): the Coppers (Lycaeninae), the Hairstreaks (Theclinae) and the Blues (Polyommatinae). Complex investigations such as spectral measurements and characterization by means of light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy enabled us to demonstrate that: (i) a wide array of nanostructures generate blue colours; (ii) monophyletic groups use qualitatively similar structures; and (iii) the hue of the blue colour is characteristic for the microstructure and nanostructure of the body of the scales. We provide 984 data of 88 collecting events originating from the Sălaj-region of western Transylvania, Romania. These have been assembled in the period between 22. April, 2014 and 10. September, 2015. Geographical, spatial and temporal records to the knowledge of 98 butterflies (Papilionoidea) and 225 moths (Bombycoidea, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea and Sphingoidea) are given representing the families (species numbers in brackets) Hesperiidae (8), Lycaenidae (28), Nymphalidae (28), Papilionidae (3), Pieridae (13) Riodinidae (1), Satyridae (17) (Papilionoidea); Arctiidae (11), Ctenuchidae (1), Lymantriidae (1), Noctuidae (119), Nolidae (2), Notodontidae (6) Thyatiridae (4), (Noctuoidea); Drepanidae (3) (Drepanoidea); Geometridae (73) (Geometroidea); Lasiocampidae (2), Saturniidae (1) (Bombycoidea); Sphingidae (2) (Sphingoidea). According to the most recent catalogue of the Romanian Lepidoptera fauna 31 species proved to be new for the region Sălaj. Amongst them Euxoa cos, Plebejides sephirus and Scotopteryx vicinaria turned to be the most remarkable findings

The blue colored males of nine Polyommatine butterfly species were investigated under the aspect of color-structure-species correlation. A large number of individuals from museum collections (in total more than 100) were used to obtain average reflectance spectra to reduce the effect of individual variations as much as possible. Structural characteristics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The relevant structural data were extracted using the Biophot Analyzer software. It was found that the position of the main reflectance peak is decided primarily by the nearest neighbor distance of holes in the perforated layers constituting the pepper-pot type structure. However, very different value of the 2D filling factor may have a large enough effect on the spectral position and the width and asymmetry of the peak to overrule the classification on taking into account only the nearest neighbor distance. The comparison of the structural and spectral data may indicate that the species Polyommatus amandus may constitute an evolutionary link between different groups of species. The examined pepper-pot type nanoarchitectures show that with the alteration of the structural parameters (first neighbor distance, 2D filling factor) the tuning of the reflectance of such nanoarchitectures may be achieved. These type of nanoarchitectures may be attractive for practical applications as their large scale manufacturing may require less strict conditions as compared with fully regular nanoarchitectures.

Empirical evidence is given for a significant difference in the collective trend of the share prices during the stock index rising and falling periods. Data on the Dow Jones Industrial Average and its stock components are studied between 1991 and 2008. Pearson-type correlations are computed between the stocks and averaged over stock pairs and time. The results indicate a general trend: whenever the stock index is falling the stock prices are changing in a more correlated manner than in case the stock index is ascending. A thorough statistical analysis of the data shows that the observed difference is significant, suggesting a constant fear factor among stockholders.

An unusual, intercalated photonic nanoarchitecture was discovered in the elytra of Taiwanese Trigonophorus rothschildi varians beetles. It consists of a multilayer structure intercalated with a random distribution of cylindrical holes normal to the plane of the multilayer. The nanoarchitectures were characterized structurally by scanning electron microscopy and optically by normal incidence, integrated and goniometric reflectance measurements. They exhibit an unsaturated specular and saturated non-specular component of the reflected light. Bioinspired, artificial nanoarchitectures of similar structure and with similar properties were realized by drilling holes of submicron size in a multilayer structure, showing that such photonic nanoarchitectures of biological origin may constitute valuable blueprints for artificial photonic materials.

One of the possible functions of the photonic-crystal structure found on the wing scales of some butterflies is investigated. The optical and electron microscopic investigation of two male butterflies-blue (colored) and brown (discolored)-representing a sister species pair and originating from different altitudes, revealed that the blue color can be attributed unambiguously to the fine, spongelike medium, called "pepper-pot structure," present between the ridges and the cross ribs in the scales of the colored butterfly. Only traces of this structure can be found on the scales of the discolored butterfly. Other physical measurements, mainly optical reflectivity, transmission, and thermal measurements, are correlated with structural data and simulation results. The thermal measurements reveal that under identical illumination conditions the high-altitude butterfly reaches a temperature 1.3-1.5 times the temperature reached by the low-altitude butterfly. This is attributed to the photonic-crystal-like behavior of the pepper-pot structure, which significantly reduces the penetration of light with wavelength in the blue region of the spectrum into the body of the scales. This sheds some light on the adaptation that enhances the survival chance of the butterfly in a cold environment rich in blue and UV radiation.

In previous experiments on dogs subjected to local myocardial ischemia, we have shown a late and prolonged anti-ischemic and anti-arrhythmic effect of a single injection of the stable prostacyclin analogue, 7-oxo-PgI2. The protection was dependent on dose and time. Maximal effects were observed 48 hours after an optimal intramuscular dose of 50/micrograms/kg. To study the mechanism of this protective effect we have followed the time-dependent changes in transmembrane cation homeostasis induced by ischemia and reperfusion by measuring the intracellular potassium, sodium and calcium ion concentrations in Langendorff guinea pig heart preparations isolated from untreated control animals and from animals receiving a single intramuscular injection of 50/micrograms/kg 7-oxo-PgI2 48 hours before preparation. Global ischemia was produced by stopping perfusion for 25 minutes and was followed by reperfusion. In a second series, similarly treated and untreated hearts were fixed for electron microscopy after 25 minutes' global ischemia as well as after 15 minutes' reperfusion. Ischemia and reperfusion evoked a rapid loss of intracellular potassium and gain of sodium as well as an accumulation of calcium in the reperfusion phase. Pretreatment with 7-oxo-PgI2 prevented all these changes. It also prevented the shortening of the sarcomers and swelling of mitochondria induced by ischemia and the deposition of calcium-dense granules in mitochondria appearing after reperfusion. The findings support the hypothesis that 7-oxo-PgI2 has a delayed cytoprotective action which preserves normal transmembrane ion transport and normal structure of myocardial cells under conditions of ischemic and reperfusion injury.

Lipid content and composition of DNA, histone and non-histone proteins of Ehrlich ascites tumor cell chromatin were investigated. All fractions contained small amounts of lipids, mostly neutral ones, in a specific distribution. According to isotopic studies with labeled lipid precursors, incorporation took place mainly in the non-histone fraction. These findings suggest that neutral lipids attached to non-histone chromosomal proteins may also contribute to the regulatory functions ascribed to phospholipids.

The authors examined three groups of persons (hospitalized patients, outpatients, and school girls) and conclude that in the cases of polythelia the cardiac conduction disturbances occur considerably more frequently than in persons without polythelia. When polythelia and conduction disturbances occur frequently in a family, the coexistence of both disorders is most probably of hereditary origin.
