Canada has never established a national research assessment exercise for its post‐secondary institutions. This is a consequence of Canada's nineteenth century legal foundation as an independent nation‐state that made higher education a provincial rather than a federal responsibility. In this sense, the experience of Canada over the past four decades makes a counterfactual to the many countries that implemented national research assessments during the same period. Nonetheless, there have been sharp criticisms of the distribution of federal government research monies among researchers in Canadian universities and colleges. These criticisms are discussed along with the effects on Canadian higher education of neoliberalism. Neoliberalism is often identified as a cause of national research assessments. Following Jamie Peck's remit for this initial set of Exchanges section contributions to present forward-positive approaches to economic geography, I offer American philosophical pragmatism, and more specifically, the neo-pragmatism of the American philosopher, Richard Rorty (1931–2007). Rather than providing a complete architectonic philosophy, pragmatism presents a set of ideas about ideas. Within the context of economic geography, I explore within this short paper three neo-pragmatist ideas: a reconceptualization of knowledge and truth; experimentation and creativity; and pluralism and conversation. "Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world": And what's economic geography going to do about it? It is against this looming future that Henry Yeung ([13]) has written "Troubling economic geography" about the discipline's looming future. The paper is a critical commentary of Henry Yeung's paper, 'Troubling economic geography: new directions in the post-pandemic world'. In Kuhn's example, one now saw only bunnies, whereas before it was only ducks.[4] Or, in the case of economic geography, as John Hudson said, he saw now only "points and lines", whereas before he saw regions and Hartshornian element complexes.[5] The second is economic geography after the 1970s crisis of deindustrialisation and Fordism. The purposes of this paper are to discuss the historical emergence of academic geography in Canada, and how it has been tied closely to the nation-state. Canadian geography is not simply a slice from a pre-existing disciplinary block but has been actively formed and molded by a set of evolving national imperatives determined and coordinated by the state. Justification for this larger argument derives from science studies which aver that context, in this case the national one of Canada, enters into the very lineaments of knowledge. The paper is divided into three main sections. The first is a conceptual discussion drawn from science studies of the relation between national context and disciplinary knowledge. The second sets out the historical development of Canadian geography from the seventeenth century until the inaugural meeting of the Canadian Association of Geographers in 1951. The final section reviews the subsequent 50 years of Canadian geography by focusing on four important moments within the discipline's history, each of which reflects in various forms the nation-state: the quantitative revolution, humanistic geography, the development of GIS, and immigration and the Metropolis project. This article makes an argument for an economic geographical pedagogy that is post-disciplinary, emphasizing non-hierarchical, student-based knowledge, disciplinary interconnectedness, epistemological plurality, and material embodiedness and embeddedness. Key to this conception of economic geographical pedagogy are recent writings of Timothy Mitchell and especially Donna Haraway. The paper discusses several projects and exercises employed by the author in an economic geography course to exemplify, and to persuade students of the merits of, a post-disciplinary approach to the subject.

Richard Colebrook (Cole) Harris was born in Vancouver on the 4 SP th sp of July, 1936. Early in the 1990s, however, Cole published a flurry of new essays informed by social theory in I BC Studies i , I Ethnohistory i , and I The Canadian Geographer i (Galois & Harris, [11]; Harris, [24], [26], [27]). Cole's father, Richard (Dick) Harris, was a high school teacher, and his mother, Ellen (nee Code) Harris, a CBC radio show host. Conscious of the importance of his topic and aware that his arguments would land in the middle of often-fraught debate and litigation (see Harris, [33]), Cole worked intensely to turn his McLean lectures into the large, dense book that entered the world as I Making native space i (Harris, [29]) after his formal retirement.
