The spatial confinement of atoms at surfaces and interfaces significantly alters the lattice dynamics of thin films, heterostructures and multilayers. Ultrathin films with high dielectric constants (high-k) are of paramount interest for applications as gate layers in current and future integrated circuits. Here we report a lattice dynamics study of high-k Eu2O3 films with thicknesses of 21.3, 2.2, 1.3, and 0.8 nm deposited on YSZ(001). The Eu-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained from nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits broadening of the phonon peaks accompanied by up to a four-fold enhancement of the number of low-energy states compared to the ab initio calculated PDOS of a perfect Eu2O3 crystal. Our analysis demonstrates that while the former effect reflects the reduced phonon lifetimes observed in thin films due to scattering from lattice defects, the latter phenomenon arises from an ultrathin EuO layer formed between the thin Eu2O3 film and the YSZ(001) substrate. Thus, our work uncovers another potential source of vibrational anomalies in thin films and multilayers, which has to be cautiously considered

During Xenopus gastrulation, leading edge mesendoderm (LEM) advances animally as a wedge-shaped cell mass over the vegetally moving blastocoel roof (BCR). We show that close contact across the BCR-LEM interface correlates with attenuated net advance of the LEM, which is pulled forward by tip cells while the remaining LEM frequently separates from the BCR. Nevertheless, lamellipodia persist on the detached LEM surface. They attach to adjacent LEM cells and depend on PDGF-A, cell-surface fibronectin and cadherin. We argue that active cell motility on the LEM surface prevents adverse capillary effects in the liquid LEM tissue as it moves by being pulled. It counters tissue surface-tension effects with oriented cell movement and bulges the LEM surface out to keep it close to the curved BCR without attaching to it. Proximity to the BCR is necessary, in turn, for the maintenance and orientation of lamellipodia that permit mass cell movement with minimal substratum contact. Together with a similar process in epithelial invagination, vertical telescoping, the cell movement at the LEM surface defines a novel type of cell rearrangement: vertical shearing.

We determined the lattice dynamics of metastable, surface-stabilized $\alpha$-phase FeSi$_2$ nanoislands epitaxially grown on the Si(111) surface with average heights and widths ranging from 1.5 to 20 nm and 18 to 72 nm, respectively. The crystallographic orientation, surface morphology and local crystal structure of the nanoislands were investigated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Fe-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits a pronounced damping and broadening of the spectral features with decreasing average island height. First-principles calculations of the polarization-projected Si- and Fe-partial phonon dispersions and PDOS enable the disentanglement of the contribution of the $xy$- and $z$-polarized phonons to the experimental PDOS. Modeling of the experimental data with the theoretical results unveils an enhanced damping of the $z$-polarized phonons for islands with average sizes below 10 nm. This phenomenon is attributed to the fact that the low-energy $z$-polarized phonons couple to the low-energy surface/interface vibrational modes. Physical review / B 99(13), 134303 (2019). doi:10.1103/PhysRevB.99.134303, The structure and dynamical properties of the $\mathrm{Fe_{3}Si / GaAs}(001)$ interface are investigated by density functional theory and nuclear inelastic scattering measurements. The stability of four different atomic configurations of the $\mathrm{Fe_{3}Si / GaAs}$ multilayers is analyzed by calculating the formation energies and phonon dispersion curves. The differences in charge density, magnetization, and electronic density of states between the configurations are examined. Our calculations unveil that magnetic moments of the Fe atoms tend to align in a plane parallel to the interface, along the [110] direction of the $Fe_{3}Si$ crystallographic unit cell. In some configurations, the spin polarization of interface layers is larger than that of bulk $Fe_{3}Si$. The effect of the interface on element-specific and layer-resolved phonon density of states is discussed. The Fe-partial phonon density of states measured for the $Fe_{3}Si$ layer thickness of three monolayers is compared with theoretical results obtained for each interface atomic configuration. The best agreement is found for one of the configurations with a mixed Fe-Si interface layer, which reproduces the anomalous enhancement of the phonon density of states below 10 meV., Published by APS, College Park, MD

This article reports on a study of the mineralisation behaviour of CaCO3 deposited on electrospun poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds preliminarily treated with low-temperature plasma. This work was aimed at developing an approach that improves the wettability and permeability of PCL scaffolds in order to obtain a superior composite coated with highly porous CaCO3, which is a prerequisite for biomedical scaffolds used for drug delivery. Since PCL is a synthetic polymer that lacks functional groups, plasma processing of PCL scaffolds in O2, NH3, and Ar atmospheres enables introduction of highly reactive chemical groups, which influence the interaction between organic and inorganic phases and govern the nucleation, crystal growth, particle morphology, and phase composition of the CaCO3 coating. Our studies showed that the plasma treatment induced the formation of O- and N-containing polar functional groups on the scaffold surface, which caused an increase in the PCL surface hydrophilicity. Mineralisation of the PCL scaffolds was performed by inducing precipitation of CaCO3 particles on the surface of polymer fibres from a mixture of CaCl2- and Na2CO3-saturated solutions. The presence of highly porous vaterite and nonporous calcite crystal phases in the obtained coating was established. Our findings confirmed that preferential growth of the vaterite phase occurred in the O2-plasma-treated PCL scaffold and that the coating formed on this scaffold was smoother and more homogenous than those formed on the untreated PCL scaffold and the Ar- and NH3-plasma-treated PCL scaffolds. A more detailed three-dimensional assessment of the penetration depth of CaCO3 into the PCL scaffold was performed by high-resolution micro-computed tomography. The assessment revealed that O2-plasma treatment of the PCL scaffold caused CaCO3 to nucleate and precipitate much deeper inside the porous structure. From our findings, we conclude that O2-plasma treatment is preferable for PCL scaffold surface modification from the viewpoint of use of the PCL/CaCO3 composite as a drug delivery platform for tissue engineering.

Recently, the diffractogram, that is, the Fourier transform of the intensity contrast induced by Fresnel free-space propagation of a given (exit) wave field, was investigated non-perturbatively in the phase-scaling factor S (controlling the strength of phase variation) for the special case of a Gaussian phase of width \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\sqrt{{\bf{w}}}$$\end{document}w. Surprisingly, an additional low-frequency zero σ* = σ*(S, F) >0 emerges critically at small Fresnel number F (σ proportional to square of 2D spatial frequency). Here, we study the S-scaling behavior of the entire diffractogram. We identify a valley of maximum S-scaling linearity in the F − σ plane corresponding to a nearly universal physical frequency ξml = (0:143 ± 0.001)w −1/2. Large values of F (near field) are shown to imply S-scaling linearity for low σ but nowhere else (overdamped non-oscillatory). In contrast, small F values (far field) entail distinct, sizable s-bands of good S-scaling linearity (damped oscillatory). These bands also occur in simulated diffractograms induced by a complex phase map (Lena). The transition from damped oscillatory to overdamped non-oscillatory diffractograms is shown to be a critical phenomenon for the Gaussian case. We also give evidence for the occurrence of this transition in an X-ray imaging experiment. Finally, we show that the extreme far-field limit generates a σ-universal diffractogram under certain requirements on the phase map: information on phase shape then is solely encoded in S-scaling behavior.

Quality of a refractive compound X-ray lens can be limited by imperfections in surfaces of unit lenses and stacking precision. In general case both the lens transmission and optical aberrations define properties of a beam in the lens exit plane; together they can be expressed in terms of the generalized pupil function. In this work we measure this function for a diamond single crystal compound refractive lens. Consequently, we apply the pupil function to evaluate the performance of the examined compound refractive X-ray lens. A number of practically important conclusions can be drawn from such analysis.

International audience; The phase retrieval problem can be reduced to the second order partial differential equation. In order to retrieve the absolute values of the X-ray phase and to minimize the reconstruction artifacts we defined the mixed inhomogeneous boundary condition using available a priori information about the sample. Finite element technique was used to solve the boundary value problem. The approach is validated on numerical and experimental phantoms. In order to demonstrate a possible application of the method, we have processed an entire tomographic set of differential phase images and estimated the magnitude of the refractive index decrement for some tissues inside complex biomedical samples.
