Abstract

The current understanding of light hypernuclei, which are sub-atomic nuclei with strangeness, is being challenged and studied in detail by several European research groups and collaborations. In recent years, studies of hypernuclei using high-energy heavy ion beams have reported unexpected results on the three-body hypernuclear state 3ΛH, named the hypertriton. For some time, reports of a shorter lifetime and larger binding energy than what was previously accepted have created a puzzling situation for its theoretical description; this is known as the "hypertriton puzzle". With the inclusion of the most recent experimental measurements, the current status of the hypertriton puzzle is evolving. Additionally, the possible neutral bound state of a Λ hyperon with two neutrons, nnΛ, has raised questions about our understanding of the formation of light hypernuclei either in bound or resonance states. These results have initiated several ongoing experimental programs all over the world to study these three-body hypernuclear states precisely. We are studying these light hypernuclear states by employing heavy ion beams at 2AGeV on a fixed carbon target with the WASA detector system and the Fragment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The WASA-FRS experimental campaign was performed during the first quarter of 2022, and this paper presents a short overview of the campaign and how it seeks to tackle the hypertriton and nnΛ puzzles. Data analysis is ongoing, and several preliminary results will be reported.

Abstract

International audience; With large neutron-to-proton ratios far from the line of stability, nuclei develop exotic structures such as neutron skin and halo. Halo nuclei show unexpected behaviour, such as, large interaction cross section which in turn, points to large matter radius [1] and narrow momentum distribution of the valence neutrons. In this context, nuclei with two neutron halo are interesting systems to understand the correlation between the two halo neutrons and the core.

Abstract

The first 2+ states in 134Ce and 136Nd and the second 2+ state in 136Nd were populated by Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies, and γ-rays were measured using the RISING setup at GSI. For 134Ce an indication of the excitation to the second 2+ state was observed. This experiment performed for the first time Coulomb excitation to second 2+ states with rare isotope beams at relativistic energies. For 136Nd the View the MathML sourceB(E2;21+→0+), View the MathML sourceB(E2;22+→0+), and View the MathML sourceB(E2;22+→21+) values relative to the previously known View the MathML sourceB(E2;21+→0+) value for 134Ce are determined as 81(10), 11(3) and 180(92) W.u., respectively. Abstract

An open problem in Nuclear Astrophysics concerns the understanding of electron-screening effects on nuclear reaction rates at stellar energies. In this framework, we have proposed to investigate the influence of the electron cloud on α-decay by measuring Q-values and α-decay half-lives of fully stripped, H-like and He-like ions. These kinds of measurements have been feasible just recently for highly-charged radioactive nuclides by fragmentation of 238U at relativistic energies at the FRS-ESR facility at GSI. In this way it is possible to produce, efficiently separate and store highly-charged α-emitters. Candidates for the proposed investigation were carefully selected and will be studied by using the Schottky Mass Spectroscopy technique. In order to establish a solid reference data set, lifetimes and Qα-value measurements of the corresponding neutrals have been performed directly at the FRS, by implanting the separated ions into an active Silicon stopper. The planned new international accelerator facility FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, [1]) at GSI will provide primary beams of all projectiles up to uranium with energies up to 1.5 GeV/n for nuclear structure physics. The maximum intensities of these projectile beams will be (1–3) 1012/s, leading to a maximum beam power of 58 kW. 10–20% of the primary beam will react in a high-power production target at the entrance of the Super-FRS (Super-conducting Fragment Separator, [2]). The Super-FRS is a large-acceptance two-stage fragment separator which will provide spatially separated isotopic beams of exotic nuclei. The non-reacting primary beam will be dumped at dedicated beam catchers, located at well defined places in the first part of the Super-FRS. The target area as well as the beam dump area is in high fluxes of high-energy particles, mainly neutrons and protons. Since magnetic elements located in these areas have to be reliably operated for the lifetime of the facility (∼20 years) their design has to be radiation resistant. Presently we consider building the magnet coils using MIC (Mineral Insulation Cable) technology. In this paper we present radiation issues, magnet specification, and possible magnetic designs of the first quadrupole magnet placed 1 m downstream of the production target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract: At the FRS Ion Catcher at GSI, relativistic exotic ions produced by projectile fragmentation/fission are range-focused, slowed down and thermalised in a gas-filled stopping cell, extracted and made available to high-precision experiments with ions almost at rest. It is a prototype for a gas cell system at the Low-Energy Branch of the Super-FRS at FAIR. In an online experiment, the FRS Ion Catcher was commissioned successfully with relativistic nickel fragments. The overall efficiency of the system was measured as (1.8±0.3)% and can be divided into a stopping efficiency of (5.0±1.1)% and an extraction and transport efficiency of (35.8±9.4)%. The overall efficiency is hence limited mostly by the stopping efficiency, which could be increased in the future by operating at higher gas cell pressures. From extraction time measurements of polyatomic ions formed in the gas cell extraction times of atomic ions of 20–50ms can be derived. The potential of the system was illustrated by the half-life measurement of 54Co with a short half-life of 193ms only. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The first 2+ states in 134Ce and 136Nd and the second 2+ state in 136Nd were populated by Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies, and γ-rays were measured using the RISING setup at GSI. For 134Ce an indication of the excitation to the second 2+ state was observed. This experiment performed for the first time Coulomb excitation to second 2+ states with rare isotope beams at relativistic energies. For 136Nd the , , and values relative to the previously known value for 134Ce are determined as 81(10), 11(3) and 180(92) W.u., respectively. Abstract: The fragment separator Super-FRS is an important part of the planned international facility for antiproton and ion research (FAIR). The high intensity heavy ion beams with a beam power of up to 40kW for uranium require strong shielding of the area and safe handling of the components in the beamline. As the primary beam may be dumped at many positions along the separator the whole first part of the Super-FRS will be located in a dedicated target hall. The layout of this target hall is presented in this paper. The combination of iron and concrete for the biological shielding is determined by dose rate calculations with a radiation transport code (FLUKA) which can also treat heavy ions and predict dose rates after activation. The resulting layout foresees a compact iron shielding surrounded by many meters of concrete shielding. A plug system is used to insert devices into the beamline. A crane can transport these plugs to a nearby hot cell. The thickness of the inner shielding was adjusted to reduce the calculated dose rate on a working platform after a short waiting time to enable hands-on maintenance. Very important for the handling concept is the predicted activation of the devices inserted into the beam and of the shielding material itself. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The future international facility FAIR (Facility for Antiprotons and Ion Research) will deliver beams of all ions up to uranium with intensities of up to 1012 ions/s. At FAIR it will be possible to perform experiments in different fields of physics. A wide range of ions with energies up to 1.5AGeV will be used for the production of fragments by projectile fragmentation/fission at the in-flight fragment separator, Super-FRS. Rare isotopes of all elements up to uranium will be produced and spatially separated within a few hundred nanoseconds, enabling the study of very short-lived nuclei. The Super-FRS is a large-acceptance device utilizing large-aperture superconducting magnets and employing multiple degrader stages to provide monoisotopic nuclear beams. It serves different experimental branches including a new storage-cooler ring system. Because of high primary beam intensity a challenging design of the target area and the components used in the first dipole stage of the Super-FRS is necessary. These efforts include high-power production targets, beam dumps to catch the remaining primary beam and radiation resistant magnets. In this contribution we present the status of the project. Abstract

Interaction cross sections for ^{42-51}Ca on a carbon target at 280  MeV/nucleon have been measured for the first time. The neutron number dependence of derived root-mean-square matter radii shows a significant increase beyond the neutron magic number N=28. Furthermore, this enhancement of matter radii is much larger than that of the previously measured charge radii, indicating a novel growth in neutron skin thickness. A simple examination based on the Fermi-type distribution, and mean field calculations point out that this anomalous enhancement of the nuclear size beyond N=28 results from an enlargement of the core by a sudden increase in the surface diffuseness of the neutron density distribution, which implies the swelling of the bare ^{48}Ca core in Ca isotopes beyond N=28.
