This article examines a selection of references to the figure of Lawrence of Arabia in Fenoglio’s work, direct quotations from his writings, his recollections, and personal re-elaborations, thus expanding the list of already familiar allusions. On these premises and through the limited documentary sources available, this study attempts to reconstruct Fenoglio’s approach to T. E. Lawrence’s texts and to demonstrate how the ways in which the war experience is represented in Seven Pillars constitute the basis for the overcoming of autobiographism in Appunti partigiani and the creation of an epic of resistance. Aiming to deliver fully original outcomes, Fenoglio carefully oscillates between affiliation and detachment, as shown by one of the best-known episodes from Partigiano Johnny – the investiture of the hero, when read in connection with Lawrence’s source.

Starting from a possible allusion to Sentiero dei nidi di ragno (The Path to the Spiders’ Nest) detected in the first pages of Ventitre giorni della città di Alba (The Twenty-three Days of the City of Alba), this article focuses on the friendship between Beppe Fenoglio and Italo Calvino and their intellectual solidarity in the name of their shared search for an authentic literary representation of the Italian Resistance.

L’intervento ripercorre le vicende redazionali ed editoriali del Partigiano Johnny di Beppe Fenoglio per mostrare il rapporto tra costruzione narrativa ed esito destinale del protagonista e le ragioni che spiegano il contrasto tra chi ha interpretato questo capolavoro della letteratura del Novecento in chiave epico-tragica e chi ne ha invece proposta una interpretazione secondo i moduli formali del romanzo di formazione.

Polish Translations of Selected Fragments of Italian Fiction in the Light of Cultural and Historical Determinants of the Reception of Foreign Literature in the People’s Republic of Poland The article focuses on the role of cultural and historical determinants that influence literary translation. The objects of analysis are selected translations of fragments of contemporary Italian fiction – novels by Natalia Ginzburg (Lessico famigliare) and Giuseppe Dessí (Paese d’ombre), and a short story by Beppe Fenoglio (23 giorni della città di Alba) – which were published in the 1970s in the Literatura na Świecie, a Polish literary magazine devoted to foreign literature. The analysis of the phenomenon of fragmentation of Italian literary prose, which occurred in the selected translations, makes it possible to observe the impact of the target culture of that time on the way in which foreign literature was presented to the target reader.

This essay considers the Resistance short stories in Beppe Fenoglio's collection I ventitré giorni della città di Alba, published in 1952. Setting these stories within the historical and cultural context of post-war Italy, it investigates their author's commitment to expressing the "truth" of the experience of the Resistance through fiction. It argues that Fenoglio goes further than his neorealist contemporaries in attempting to do so in the manner in which he depicts a civil war rather than a war of liberation, and in his unsparingly harsh description of certain aspects of partisan behaviour. The essay examines the relationship between Fenoglio's life and his fiction, putting the case that we should draw clear distinctions between the two, without detracting from the truth of the latter. In conclusion, it draws comparisons between the early stories and Fenoglio's later novel, Il partigiano Johnny, where the author was able to capture the heroic qualities of the Resistance alongside his depiction of all its contradictory aspects. This essay conducts a reappraisal of Beppe Fenoglio's Appunti partigiani, a work which has been unjustly neglected. It discusses the relationship of the Appunti to neorealist memorialistica and to Fenoglio's later fiction such as Il partigiano Johnny, in terms of attitudes to the Resistance, literary technique, and the aesthetic of remaining true to experience without embellishment. The essay demonstrates how Appunti partigiani raises profound moral questions in its depiction of civil war, for example in the story of the execution of a spy, yet without necessarily condemning the Resistance itself. Finally, the essay examines the role of the narrator/protagonist "Beppe" in creating an intimate rapport with the reader, so that we trust him as someone with moral integrity and live through the experience of being a partisan with him. In conclusion, the essay argues that Appunti partigiani offers one of the most revealing accounts of the Resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyses epic elements that are traceable in Wu Ming's 54 (2002). It aims to clarify what is meant by modern epic and to tease out the distinction between epic genre and epic mode. As part of this analysis, the article focuses on one component of the epic, the re-use, in a new story, of a hero from a different tale. In the case of 54, the hero is taken from a work by Beppe Fenoglio. The subsequent discussion of the intertextual relations between Wu Ming and Fenoglio emphasizes the importance of Fenoglio as an established literary model for the contemporary writer in terms of both the representation of the past and dialogue with the epic mode.
