We present our effort on an efficient way of tuning the nonlinear absorption mechanisms in ultra-small CdSe based quantum dots by implementing core–shell and core/multi-shell architectures. Depending on the size, architecture and composition of the QDs, these materials exhibited resonant and near-resonant nonlinear optical absorption properties such as saturable (SA) and reverse saturable (RSA) absorption for 5 ns pulses of 532 nm. These QDs exhibited a non-monotonic dependence of the effective two-photon absorption coefficient (β) under nanosecond excitation with a maximum value for a thinner shell. We obtained a nonlinear absorption enhancement of an order of magnitude by adopting the core–shell architecture compared to their individual counterparts. Interestingly, CdSe QDs exhibit SA and/or RSA depending on their size and show a switching over from SA to RSA as the input intensity increases. We explained the enhanced nonlinear absorption in core–shell QDs compared to their individual counterparts in view of enhanced local fields associated with the core–shell structure. To address the problem of ever-increasing oily wastewater management, due to its directional liquid transport property, membranes with asymmetric wettability can be effectively used for emulsion separation. This study reports the synthesis of electrospun polymer–clay nanocomposite nanofibers, using co-polyamide polymer (COPA) and halloysite nanotubes (HA) as filler. The influence of clay content on the morphological, thermal and dielectric properties of the polymer composite nanofiber was investigated comprehensively to address the material characteristics of the developed system. The surface structure analysis and contact angle measurements of the electrospun composite nanofibers confirms the change in surface roughness and wettability when the fillers are added to the polymer. The porosity of the composite electrospun nanofiber membrane was found to be 85% with an oil adsorption capacity of 97% and water permeability of 6265 L/m2 h. Furthermore, the asymmetric wettability-driven oil/water emulsion separation abilities of the as-synthesized membranes shows that the separation efficiency of the composite fiber membrane is 10% improved compared to that of the neat fiber membrane, with improved separation time. Environmental remediation using green approaches for addressing various pollution-related issues, especially water pollution, is in high demand. Here, we designed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable sodium alginate–halloysite clay composite aerogel (SAHA) for oil/water separation via a two-step synthesis procedure, including ionic crosslinking and freeze-drying. The as-prepared SAHA aerogels were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Characterization of the SAHA aerogels revealed a three-dimensional porous microstructure with uniformly dispersed halloysite nanotubes (HA) within the alginate matrix. The elemental composition of the hydrogels investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) revealed the presence of minerals, such as magnesium, sodium, aluminum, and silicon in the SAHA aerogels. The presence of a hydrophilic alginate matrix combined with these unique morphological characteristics resulted in SAHA aerogels with underwater oleophobicity and excellent oil/water separation efficiency (up to 99.7%). The ease of fabrication, excellent oil/water separation, and multiple performances make the SAHA aerogel an interesting candidate for practical applications in water recycling. A new method for the simple synthesis of stable heterostructured biopolymer (sodium alginate)-capped silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) based on green chemistry is reported. The as-prepared nanoparticles were characterized using the ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The results showed that the as-prepared Ag-NPs have a heterostructured morphology with particle size in the range 30 ± 18–60 ± 25 nm, showing a zeta potential of −62 mV. The silver nanoparticle formation was confirmed from UV-Vis spectra showing 424 nm as maximum absorption. The particle size and crystallinity of the as-synthesized nanoparticles were analyzed using TEM and XRD measurements, respectively. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of alginate as capping agent to stabilize the nanoparticles. The Ag-NPs also showed excellent sensing capability, with a linear response to hydrogen peroxide spanning a wide range of concentrations from 10−1 to 10−7 M, which indicates their high potential for water treatment applications, such as pollution detection and nanofiltration composites.
