13. Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Hygrothermal Transfer through Bio-Based Materials: An Application to Wood–Cement Walls.

Abstract

In the context of the energy transition, new construction materials are emerging, notably bio-based materials such as wood concrete. This paper investigates the hygrothermal performance of walls constructed with wood–cement concrete. First, the thermal properties of wooden concrete, namely thermal conductivity, effusivity, and diffusivity, are experimentally characterized in both dry and wet conditions. Second, in situ measurements are carried out on a house in Lyon, a city in France, constructed with mono-layered wood–cement walls. This involves monitoring the temperature and relative humidity levels both inside and outside the building, as well as at three distinct positions within the wood walls over a 6-month period (from 20 April 2023 to 20 October 2023). The hygrothermal analysis at the center of the wall reveals that the wood wall effectively moderates fluctuations in the external temperature and relative humidity. Following this, a numerical study is performed to check the reliability of the adopted Reduced Heat, Air, and Mass (HAM) model to reproduce the hygrothermal performance of the wood–cement wall. The results show a strong agreement between the simulated and measured data, confirming the applicability of the 'Reduced HAM' model for the prediction of the hygrothermal behavior of wood–cement walls. Abstract

International audience; High-quality data obtained from three-dimensional Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D PTV) is pivotal for indoor environment engineering when designing ventilation strategies or monitoring airborne pollutants dispersion in inhabited spaces. A new method is proposed to link multiple 3D PTV systems, positioned side by side so that the entire measuring volume can be covered. An algorithm is developed to establish a link between the particles' trajectories calculated by each 3D PTV system. To evaluate the validity and robustness of the multi-PTV algorithm, synthetic particles were created, which follow different motions implemented in Matlab, including two analytical solutions for incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, namely Kovasznay and Beltrami flows, as well as a linear motion. Two different tracking algorithms were used to obtain 3D particle positions. The numerical results reveal that the proposed method is capable of connecting adjacent multiple PTV systems with reasonable accuracy and therefore can be considered as a promising method for indoor airflow measurements.

Abstract

Straw bale building construction is attracting a revived public interest because of its potential for reduced carbon footprint, hygrothermal comfort, and energy savings at an affordable price. The present paper aims to summarize the current knowledge on straw bale construction, using available data from academic, industry, and public agencies sources. The main findings on straw fibers, bales, walls, and buildings are presented. The literature shows a wide variability of results, which reflects the diversity of straw material and of straw construction techniques. It is found that the effective thermal conductivity, density, specific heat, and elastic modulus of straw bales used in construction are in the range 0.033–0.19 W/(m·K), 80–150 kg/m3, 1075–2000 J/(kg·K), and 150–350 kPa respectively. Most straw-based multilayered walls comply with fire resistance regulations, and their U-value and sound reduction index range from 0.11 to 0.28 W/m2 K and 42 to 53 dB respectively, depending on the wall layout. When compared to standard buildings, straw bale buildings do provide yearly reductions in carbon emissions and energy consumption. The reductions often match those obtained after applying energy-saving technologies in standard buildings. International audience; In light of increasing human-induced global climate change, there is a greater need for clean energy resources and zero carbon projects. Abstract

Les données obtenues par vélocimétrie par suivi de particules (3DPTV) sont essentielles pour l’étude des flux d’air intérieurs dans les bâtiments afin d’optimiser les stratégies de HVAC et de surveiller les polluants en suspension dans l’air. Le 3DPTV fournit une mesure quantitative de la vitesse d'écoulement et de la trajectoire par suivi 3D de particules discrètes à flottabilité neutre plongées dans un fluide. Cependant, les volumes de mesure 3D-PTV doivent être étendus pour pouvoir être appliqués à des scénarios réels. Pour ce faire, nous proposons une méthode d'utilisation de plusieurs systèmes 3DPTV composés chacun d'au moins trois caméras synchrones. L'une des exigences de cette approche est qu'au moins une caméra ait une vue sur la cible d'étalonnage du système suivant. L'étalonnage des caméras est effectué séparément pour chaque système, de manière à obtenir la relation mathématique entre le repère pixels 2D de chaque caméra et repère 3D commun. Abstract

International audience; A simplified model for combined natural convection and radiation during melting process of a phase change material (PCM) is presented. First, the simplified model for natural convection during melting is validated using a CFD model, in addition to experimental and numerical benchmark solutions for a test case. Then, the simplified model for both natural convection and radiation is applied to the melting of a fatty acid eutectic filled in glass bricks and validated against lattice Boltzmann-discrete ordinate method (LBM-DOM). Finally, the complete model is applied to study the thermal behavior of a translucent wall; then validated experimentally using a full-scale building located in southern France.
