Soils have the potential to sequester and store significant amounts of carbon, contributing towards climate change mitigation. Soil carbon markets are emerging to pay farmers for management changes that absorb atmospheric carbon, governed by codes that ensure eligibility, additionality and permanence whilst protecting against leakage and reversals. This paper presents the first global comparative analysis of farmland soil carbon codes, providing new insights into the range of approaches governing this global marketplace. To do this, the paper developed an analytical framework for the systematic comparison of codes which was used to identify commonalities and differences in approaches, methods, administration, commercialisation and operations for 12 publicly available codes from around the world. Codes used a range of mechanisms to manage additionality, uncertainty and risks, baselines, measurement, reporting and verification, auditing, resale of carbon units, bundling and stacking, stakeholder engagement and market integrity. The paper concludes by discussing existing approaches and codes that could be adapted for use in the UK and evaluates the need for an over-arching standard for soil carbon codes in the UK and internationally, to which existing codes and other schemes already generating soil carbon credits could be assessed and benchmarked. Using the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry–International Soil Reference and Information Centre (ICRAF-ISRIC) global soil spectroscopy database, models were developed to estimate a number of soil variables using different input data types. These input types included: (1) site data only; (2) visible–near-infrared (Vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy only; (3) combined site and Vis-NIR data; (4) red–green–blue (RGB) color data only; and (5) combined site and RGB color data. The models produced variable estimation accuracy, with RGB only being generally worst and spectroscopy plus site being best. However, we showed that for certain variables, estimation accuracy levels achieved with the “site plus RGB input data” were sufficiently good to provide useful estimates (r2 > 0.7). These included major elements (Ca, Si, Al, Fe), organic carbon, and cation exchange capacity. Estimates for bulk density, contrast-to-noise (C/N), and P were moderately good, but K was not well estimated using this model type. For the “spectra plus site” model, many more variables were well estimated, including many that are important indicators for agricultural productivity and soil health. Sum of cation, electrical conductivity, Si, Ca, and Al oxides, and C/N ratio were estimated using this approach with r2 values > 0.9. This work provides a mechanism for identifying the cost-effectiveness of using different model input data, with associated costs, for estimating soil variables to required levels of accuracy. Ecosystems have a critical role in regulating climate, and soil, water and air quality, but management to change an ecosystem process in support of one regulating ecosystem service can either provide co-benefits to other services or can result in trade-offs., We examine the role of ecosystems in delivering these regulating ecosystem services, using the UK as our case study region. We identify some of the main co-benefits and trade-offs of ecosystem management within, and across, the regulating services of climate regulation, and soil, water and air quality regulation, and where relevant, we also describe interactions with other ecosystem services. Our analysis clearly identifies the many important linkages between these different ecosystem services., However, soil, water and air quality regulation are often governed by different legislation or are under the jurisdiction of different regulators, which can make optimal management difficult to identify and to implement. Policies and legislation addressing air, water and soil are sometimes disconnected, with no integrated overview of how these policies interact. This can lead to conflicting messages regarding the use and management of soil, water and air. Similarly, climate change legislation is separate from that aiming to protect and enhance soil, water and air quality, leading to further potential for policy conflict., All regulating services, even if they are synergistic, may trade off against other ecosystem services. At a policy level, this may well be the biggest conflict. The fact that even individual regulating services comprise multiple and contrasting indicators (e.g. the various components of water quality such as nutrient levels, acidity, pathogens and sediments), adds to the complexity of the challenge., Synthesis and applications. We conclude that although there are some good examples of integrated ecosystem management, some aspects of ecosystem management could be better coordinated to deliver multiple ecosystem services, and that an ecosystem services framework to assess co-benefits and trade-offs would help regulators, policy-makers and ecosystem managers to deliver more coherent ecosystem management strategies. In this way, an ecosystem services framework may improve the regulation of climate, and soil, water and air quality, even in the absence of economic valuation of the individual services. We present results from modelling studies, which suggest that, at most, only about 10–20% of recently observed soil carbon losses in England and Wales could possibly be attributable to climate warming. We investigated turnover of methane (CH4) in soils from a poorly drained UK forest. In situ, this forest exhibited a negligible soil–atmosphere CH4 flux, whereas adjacent grassland plots were sources of CH4. We hypothesised that the forest plots exhibited reduced anaerobic CH4 production through water-table draw down. Consequently, we exposed soil cores from under oak to high and low water-table conditions in the laboratory. Methane fluxes increased significantly in the high water-table (1925±1702 μg CH4 m-2 h-1) compared to the low one (-3.5±6.8 μg CH4 m-2 h-1). Natural abundance δ13C values of CH4 showed a strong depletion in high water-table cores (-56.7±2.9 ‰) compared to methane in ambient air (-46.0 ‰) indicative of methanogenic processes. The δ13C values of CH4 from low water-table cores (δ13C-46.8±0.2 ‰) was similar to ambient air and suggested little alteration of headspace CH4 by the soil microbial community. In order to assess the CH4 oxidizing activity of the two treatments conclusively, a 13CH4 spike was added to the cores and 13CO2 production was measured as the by-product of CH4 oxidation. 13CH4 oxidation rates were 57.5 (±12.7) and 0.5 (±0.1) μg CH4 m-2 h-1 for high and low water-tables, respectively. Above-ground herbivory is ubiquitous in terrestrial ecosystems, yet its impacts on below-ground processes and consequences for plants remain ambiguous. To examine whether physiological responses of individual trees may potentially modify soil nutrient availability, we subjected Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech) and Abies alba Mill. (silver fir) to simulated foliar herbivory over two growing seasons. Above-ground herbivory enhanced N mineralization and inorganic N availability in the soil. The total input of C from the plant roots to the soil is not known; however, carbon sequestration in the soil, measured using stable isotopic techniques, was unaffected by herbivory. Fagus responded to herbivory by producing larger leaves, with increased photosynthetic capacity and N content, which largely compensated for the loss of biomass; Abies exhibited no such response. We conclude that despite large interspecific differences in the growth response, tree physiological responses to foliar herbivory are capable of directly modifying soil biological processes. Stable isotope mass spectrometric approaches are proving to be valuable tools in unravelling biotic interactions in complex ecosystems, yielding information on trophic preferences and functional roles of individual species. Gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) provides considerable opportunities to assist in studies concerned with ecosystem processes mediated by soil invertebrates and microorganisms by determination of δ13C values of individual compounds, for example, Upids, amino acids etc. However, techniques conventionally adopted for "wet" chemical extractions and de 'nvatizations necessary for compound-specific stable isotope determinations restrict the size of soil organism that can be studied and can limit investigations of individuals or even parts of individuals. We demonstrate here that individual soil mesofauna can be probed directly for their fatty acid stable isotope signatures by pyrolysis-GC/C/IRMS. A thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM) reaction is described for the determination of δ13C fatty acid values using trimethylsulfonium hydroxide (TMSH). Authentic fatty acids, acyl lipids, and individual Collembola (Folsomia candida) raised on C[SUB3] and C[SUB4] isotopically labeled yeast were analyzed initially by py-GC/ MS with TMSH and then by py-GC/C/IRMS. A kinetic isotope effect (KIE) observed with the THM reaction prevents direct calculation of the fatty acid δl3C values by simple mass balance equations. However, the KIE is shown to be both reproducible and robust and can therefore be accounted for by the use of correction factors. The fatty acid methyl ester compositions of individual F. candida and their respective δ13C values were determined and shown to agree with those obtained by conventional "wet" chemical procedures applied to much larger numbers of Collembola, thus enhancing the scope to which stable isotopes can be applied to the study of invertebrates in complex food webs in any environment. Forests have a key role as carbon sinks, which could potentially mitigate the continuing increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and associated climate change. We show that carbon dioxide enrichment, although causing short-term growth stimulation in a range of European tree species, also leads to an increase in soil microbial respiration and a marked decline in sequestration of root-derived carbon in the soil. These findings indicate that, should similar processes operate in forest ecosystems, the size of the annual terrestrial carbon sink may be substantially reduced, resulting in a positive feedback on the rate of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Concentrations of seven metals were measured in over 1000 samples as part of an integrated survey. Sixteen metal pairs were significantly positively correlated. Cluster analysis identified two clusters. Metals from the largest (Cr, Cu, Ni, V, Zn), but not the smallest (Cd, Pb) cluster were significantly negatively correlated with spatial location and soil pH and organic matter content. Cd and Pb were not correlated with these parameters, due possibly to the masking effect of recent extensive release. Analysis of trends with soil properties in different habitats indicated that general trends may not necessarily be applicable to all areas. A risk assessment indicated that Zn poses the most widespread direct risk to soil fauna and Cd the least. Any risks associated with high metal concentrations are, however, likely to be greatest in habitats such as arable and horticultural, improved grassland and built up areas where soil metal concentrations are more frequently elevated.

To examine the C(20) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) compositions of Collembola, we raised five species of Collembola on yeast diets, and then quantified body mass, neutral lipid fatty acid (NLFA) and phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) compositions. PLFA content was always less than 5% of dry weight, but NLFA content varied from 5.9% to 29.6% of dry weight, depending upon species. Combined C(20) PUFA proportions of up to 9.2% and 48% were observed in the NLFA and PLFA fractions, respectively, resulting in total C(20) PUFA proportions of up to 19.4% of the total fatty acid compositions of Collembola. C(20) PUFAs were also detected in Collembola specimens from a deciduous woodland at proportions up to 29.7% of the total fatty acid composition. Terrestrial invertebrates generally contain <4% and <22% C(20) PUFAs in PLFAs and NLFAs, respectively; therefore, these results demonstrate that Collembola often possess the highest proportions of C(20) PUFAs yet observed in terrestrial invertebrates. The biochemical reasons for such high C(20) PUFA proportions, which were biosynthesised by the Collembola since these components were absent from the yeast diets, remain unclear. The distinctive fatty acid compositions of Collembola may be useful in soil food web studies utilising fatty acids as biomarkers of trophic behaviour.
