Abstract

A new silver-based composite material with an addition of 1 and 10 mass % of rhenium, for prospective application in the production of electric contacts, has been presented. The paper shows results of the research and experimental works aimed at developing technology for fabrication of semiproducts (wires and bimetallic contacts) by classical powder metallurgy methods and by a method enabling production of nanocrystalline composite. At each stage of the processes involved, physical, mechanical and technological properties of the materials were investigated. Particular attention was given to final products and semiproducts prepared in a form of bimetallic contacts. It was found that the composite with nanocrystalline structure may be a good material for ecological electric contacts.

W referacie przedstawiono stosowany aktualnie zarys technologii wytwarzania materiałów stykowych Ag-Re 10 i Ag-SnO2Bi2O3 w postaci drutów oraz nitów litych i bimetalowych i jednocześnie podano ich charakterystyczne parametry obejmujące właściwości fizyko-mechaniczne i mikrostrukturę. Stwierdzono, że poziom uzyskiwanych właściwości-szczególnie elektrycznych (odporność na| erozję łuku elektrycznego) jest niezadawalający w świetle aktualnych wymagań, co dotyczy głów- nie nowego jeszcze nie w pełni opanowanego technologicznie materiału Ag-Re 10%wag. Zaprojektowano wiec nowy sposób wytwarzania tego typu materiałów i podjęto prace badawczo rozwojowe w tym zakresie. Ich celem jest opracowanie sposobu wytwarzania nowej generacji materiałów stykowych w postaci kompozytów o podobnym składzie chemicznym jednakże charakteryzujących się nanostrukturą i znacznie wyższymi parametrami - głównie odpornością na działanie łuku elektrycznego. Przedstawiono wstępne wyniki badań obejmujące syntezę mechaniczną oraz określono warunki konsolidacji odkształceniowej i plastycznej w procesie ich przeróbki na druty i nity lite i bimetalowe, bazując na procesach z obszaru metalurgii proszków.

21. Engaging with Engagement: Interrogating Preservice Teachers' Theories of Engagement in Their Literacy Planning and Reflection

Abstract

The term "engagement" is widely used in teacher education and professional development. There is, however, a lack of consensus about the meaning of this term: it is defined in numerous ways with various theoretical underpinnings. This article employs a postqualitative approach to explore conceptualizations of engagement and their implications for teaching and learning. Specifically, we examine written teaching reflections from one cohort of preservice teachers, asking: (1) How did preservice teachers use the word "engage(ment)" in their planning for and analysis of one-on-one literacy instructional events? and (2) What conceptualizations of engagement did these usages reflect? Through the analytic approach of thinking with theory, we plug these data into four theoretical perspectives that are relevant to preservice teachers' talk about engagement: (1) First Generation Activity Theory, (2) Reader Response Theory, (3) Self-Determination Theory, and (4) Inter-Comprehension Theory. We explore how each perspective illuminated our data, as well as questions that emerged. We conclude by (re)imagining engagement through a languaging relations perspective, arguing that this lens shifts toward a more humanizing conceptualization of engagement by centering the ongoing (re)making of relationships as people teach and learn.

Abstract

W pracy badano wpływ mikrostruktury kompozytów Ag-C oraz Ag-WC-C i Ag-W-C na ich właściwości łączeniowe. Do wytworzenia kompozytów stosowano dwa sposoby przygotowania mieszanin wyjściowych: klasyczne mieszanie proszków oraz mechaniczną syntezę (MA - mechanical allaying). Porównano odporność kompozytowych materiałów stykowych wykonanych różnymi technologiami na erozję łukową, rezystancje zestykową i odporność na sczepianie. Badania właściwości łączeniowych prowadzono w układach modelowych. Stwierdzono, że zastosowanie procesu MA do przygotowania mieszanin wyjściowych powoduje wzrost odporności na erozję badanych materiałów.

31. COVID-19: Missing More than a Classroom. The Impact of School Closures on Children's Nutrition. Innocenti Working Paper 2021-01

Abstract

In 2019, 135 million people in 55 countries were in food crises or worse, and 2 billion people did not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. COVID-19 has exacerbated these hardships and may result in an additional 121 million people facing acute food insecurity by the end of 2020. Further, since the beginning of the pandemic, an estimated 1.6 billion learners in 199 countries worldwide were affected by school closures, with nearly 370 million children not receiving a school meal in 150 countries. The paper presents the evidence on the potential negative short-term and long-term effects of school meal scheme disruption during COVID-19 globally. It shows how vulnerable the children participating in these schemes are, how coping and mitigation measures are often only short-term solutions, and how prioritizing school re-opening is critical. For instance, it highlights how girls are at greater risk of not being in school or of being taken out of school early, which may lead to poor nutrition and health for themselves and their children. However, well-designed school feeding programmes have been shown to enable catch-up from early growth failure and other negative shocks. As such, once schools re-open, school meal schemes can help address the deprivation that children have experienced during the closures and provide an incentive for parents to send and keep their children, especially girls, in school.

44. Show Me the Money…Saved! Cost Savings from Acute Asthma Care in the School-Based Health Center

Abstract

Chronic school absenteeism directly affects educational outcomes while reducing school funding and reimbursement. Asthma is a prevalent disease associated with chronic absenteeism. This quality improvement project demonstrated classroom seat time preserved through use of school-based health centers (SBHC). The project also highlights the educational benefits, reduced emergency department utilization, potential cost savings to hospitals, and lower overall health care costs. Visit summary data were collected and analyzed to show quality asthma care and cost savings. Of 44 acute asthma visits that returned to class, an average classroom time of 3:42 hours were saved per student during the 2017-2018 academic year, resulting in a combined total of 166:07 hours saved. A minimum potential cost savings was estimated to be $67,770 for all 44 visits. Data analysis of structural, process, and outcome measures through quality improvement tools can demonstrate cost savings of SBHC care, which advocates funding for this pediatric care model.

46. Mechanizing Refinement Types

Abstract

Practical checkers based on refinement types use the combination of implicit semantic subtyping and parametric polymorphism to simplify the specification and automate the verification of sophisticated properties of programs. However, a formal metatheoretic accounting of the soundness of refinement type systems using this combination has proved elusive. We present λ_RF, a core refinement calculus that combines semantic subtyping and parametric polymorphism. We develop a metatheory for this calculus and prove soundness of the type system. We give two mechanizations of our metatheory. First, we introduce data propositions, a novel feature that enables encoding derivation trees for inductively defined judgments as refined data types, and use them to show that LiquidHaskell's refinement types can be used for mechanization. Second, we mechanize our results in Coq, which comes with stronger soundness guarantees than LiquidHaskell, thereby laying the foundations for mechanizing the metatheory of LiquidHaskell. Finally, we present an extension λ_RFD, which adds lists and a length measure. We extend the metatheory to prove the soundness of the extended type system and give another mechanization in Coq.

47. 'You Got Tricked': Pre-Service Teacher Recontextualization of Language and Learning through Modeling and Feedback

Abstract

I embarked upon this study with an interest in how one teacher educator supports pre-service teachers to recontextualize their literacy learning as they enacted the roles of both learner and future teacher in their education coursework. My research extends the current literature on modeling and feedback by examining the modeling and feedback given by one teacher educator to pre-service teachers across contexts and over time. I observe how pre-service teachers moved from literacy and pedagogical theories to practice as reflective practitioners during a literacy methods course with an embedded field placement, through the modeling and feedback of a skilled teacher educator. I drew upon ethnographic and discourse analytic methods to explore how pedagogical instructional interactions about literacy, in which pre-service teachers were sometimes the student and sometimes the teacher, informed how pre-service they understood what it meant to teach literacy. My findings indicate that professor modeling in multiple forms, coupled with an embedded fieldwork opportunity, allowed pre-service teachers to see teacher literacy instruction in action and immediately practice the learned strategies in their own teaching. In addition to professor modeling, I argue that pre-service teachers made shifts in their practice of teaching when they participated in an iterative lesson study cycle in which they were provided with professor feedback. Specifically, the pre-service teachers received feedback as learners and were then given the opportunity to apply that learning as they analyzed their literacy teaching and made changes to their language and instruction techniques as practicing teachers. I conclude that pre-service teachers recontextualized their learning and moved from the role of learner to the role of teacher through the support of a skilled teacher educator using modeling and feedback. Additionally, I argue that an embedded field placement in a literacy methods course can benefit pre-service teachers when it is used strategically to connect various literacy and pedagogical theories into practice through participation. Finally, I conclude that the role of the teacher educator is key to moving pre-service teachers from learners to teachers through their participation in a literacy methods course.
