In addition to having high economic value, catfish (Clarias sp.) can also be cultivated quickly and they can adapt well. The demand of catfish is in line with the increase in production which is expected to remain efficient and environmentally sound. Biofloc technology has also been implemented in catfish for increasing productivity. Biofloc utilizes the activity of heterotrophic microorganisms and autotrophs for the conversion of organic waste into floc and is used as fish feed. This study aims to examine the effect of the use of molasses with different doses (C/N ratio) on the growth and survival rate of catfish. This study was conducted with as many as 3 treatments with 3 repetitions each except for the control. The treatment with the ratio of molasses in each of them: A: C/N of 10:1; B: C/N of 15:1; C: C/N of 20:1, and D without molasses given as control. The study using 240 catfish measuring 10-12 cm was carried out for 30 days with sampling every 10 days. It aims to determine the average growth, daily growth, and survival rate of test biota during the study. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the use of different doses of molasses in catfish farming, and biofloc technology will affect the growth and survival rate of farmed catfish. Catfish farmed with biofloc technology at a C/N ratio of 15:1 show the best results on their growth and survival rate. In addition, catfish farming with a biofloc C/N ratio of 15:1 has a better economic analysis when compared to conventional catfish farming. In summary, the use of biofloc based on research results can be a recommendation to be applied in the community, especially among catfish farmers.

Understanding the mechanisms that determine the critical habitat of commercial species is one of the significant challenges in marine science, particularly for species that inhabit the vast ocean worldwide. Previous investigations primarily focused on determining skipjack habitats without considering the feasible size for sustainable fisheries. To define habitat hotspots and movement patterns for decently sized skipjack tuna (≥50 cm) in Indonesia Fisheries Management Area (IFMA) 713, Indonesia, we examined the remote sensing of synoptic sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) measurements with catch data from 2007 to 2016. A new skipjack tuna habitat model was developed based on the link between the key satellite-based environmental data and the best tuna fishery performance using a combination of generalized additive models (GAMs) and kernel density estimates. The findings reveal that feasible skipjack catch sizes were found in approximately 27% of total fishing grounds and were significantly captured in areas with a Chl-a of 0.15–0.28 mg m−3 and an SST of 29.5–31.0 °C, corresponding with an elevated skipjack habitat index (SHI). The habitat hotspots for the commercial skipjack were particularly produced by favorable Chl-a and SST, in association with Chl-a front and anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies, especially in October, which coincided with the highest skipjack catch per unit effort (CPUE). Skipjack distributions were mostly found within 10 km of favorable feeding habitats. They used the hotspot area as an indicator of their dynamics and movement pattern in the environment. The observed CPUEs cross-validated the predicted SHI values, suggesting that the model provided a reliable proxy for defining the potential habitats and the spatial movement of mature skipjack schools. Our findings have global significance for locating ecological hotspots, monitoring sustainable skipjack fisheries, and tracking skipjack migration, especially within the western tropical Pacific.

Tor douronensis and Tor soro were two of the four species of the Tor genus that live in Indonesian waters. However, studies related to the skeleton of these two fish are still rarely disclosed. The aim of this study compared the morphology of the caudal-fin (pinna caudalis) T. douronensis and T. soro. The research stages include sample preparation, making skeleton preparations, image analysis, and identification of skeleton terminology. T. douronensis fish were collected from the waters of the Pagar Alam area, Lahat Regency, South Sumatra, while T. soro was collected from the waters of Bukit Lawang, Bohorok District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra Province. The caudal-fin (pinna caudalis) is part of the ossa urostylus which produces optimal hydrodynamic propulsion. The caudal-fin (pinna caudalis) Genus Tor is part of the ossa urostylus which is composed of 31 caudal-fin rays (pinnae), six hypural bones, parhypural, pleurostylus, epural, and uroneuralis. The ventral part of T. douronensis and T. soro is composed of the parhypural, and the 1st and 2nd hypural bones. T. douronensis had a parhypural bone that was more prominent and separates from the spina hemalis compared to T. soro. The dorsal part was composed of the 3rd hypural bones to 6th hypural, in T. soro the hypural bone was fused with cartilage. Os pleurostylus T. douronensis had a more prominent shape than T. soro and there was enlargement in the posterior part. The 3rd and 4th hypural bones on T. soro had the largest size. The T. soro had three spina neuralis and three spina hemalis to support the rays of the tail. The bones that composed the caudal-fin of T. douronensis and T. soro were relatively similar to those of some fish from the family Cyprinidae. The results of this study could be used as an alternative to identify T. douronensis and T. soro from the skeleton.

Ikan Siganus merupakan ikan herbivora yang hidup di padang lamun sebagai tempat asuhan, pembesaran, dan tempat mencari makan. Namun, Informasi tentang ikan Siganus di padang lamun Teluk Maccini Baji, Pulau Tanakeke, Kabupaten Takalar masih terbatas. Tujuan penelitian ini yaitu untuk menentukan struktur jenis dan ukuran ikan Siganus di Teluk Maccini Baji, Pulau Tanakeke, Kabupaten Takalar, dan mengetahui kondisi lamun yang meliputi kerapatan, persen tutupan dan dominansi jenis lamun. Penelitian ini dilakukan mulai bulan Juni sampai dengan Desember 2019. Stasiun sampling dipilih berdasarkan tipe ekosistem padang lamun dari arah luar teluk ke arah dalam teluk yaitu stasiun Lamun-Karang, Lamun-Lamun, dan Lamun-Mangrove. Pada masing-masing stasiun, ditentukan luasan 50x100 m untuk pengambilan sampel ikan sebanyak delapan kali ulangan (hauling), dengan menggunakan gill net (panjang 50 meter; lebar 50 cm; ukuran mata jaring 1,5 inci) yang ditarik dengan perahu motor. Pengambilan data lamun juga dilakukan di dalam setiap stasiun. Tiga transek garis diletakkan dalam masing-masing stasiun dengan interval 50 meter. Sepanjang transek garis, dilakukan pengamatan lamun di dalam kuadran 50x50cm, sebanyak 6 kuadran dengan interval 10 meter. Jumlah keseluruhan ikan Siganus yang ditemukan sebanyak 51 ekor yang umumnya tergolong remaja. Komposisi jenis ikan Siganus yang ditemukan pada lokasi penelitian yaitu S. canaliculatus, S. guttatus, S. punctatus, S. spinus, dan S. virgatus. Kerapatan lamun total berkisar antara 668 ind/m2. hingga 1595 ind/m2, dengan penutupan lamun berkisar 36,4% hingga 56,9%. Background: Mining activities can produce large amounts of heavy metals that are discharged uncontrollably, causing widespread ecosystem pollution. Heavy metal pollution is a serious problem, as heavy metals are toxic and non-degradable, polluting air, water and soil. Although some heavy metals are considered essential for normal physiological functions, concentrations that exceed the prescribed limits can have negative impacts on human health and biota. Exposure to heavy metals can cause toxicity to various tissues, organs and systems such as circulatory, respiratory, endocrine, immune, nervous, urinary and reproductive systems. Due to the differences in toxicity of heavy metals, risk assessment is very important in environmental management. Objective: To describe the probabilistic simulation and sensitivity of health risks due to Nickel and Cobalt deposition around the mine using monte carlo simulation. Methods: The method used in this study was literature review. Data collection was done through searching online databases such as: Pubmed and Science Direct. The keywords used in the article search were "Heavy Metal Toxicity", "Heavy Metal Effects", "Heavy metal risk analysis" and "Monte Carlo Simulation". Inclusion criteria were quantitative or qualitative research, target population was heavy metals Nickel and Cobalt, published in the last 10 years (2013-2023) articles in English and articles in original, fulltext and open access. Exclusion criteria are articles that are not relevant to the topic of discussion. Results: 14 articles were found, of which 3 articles on diseases or health problems caused by nickel, 3 articles on nickel risk analysis, 5 articles on diseases or health problems caused by cobalt, 3 articles on cobalt risk analysis. Conclusion: The environment around the mine shows a high level of toxicity, caused by the presence of heavy metals. This can result in serious environmental pollution and pose a great threat to human health. Background: Water demand is expected to increase in all sectors. Rainwater can be a solution to the lack of the clean water crisis. The quality of rainwater harvested is highly dependent on the rainwater harvesting system. Methods: This literature review is a narrative review using sources from the Scopus and Pubmed databases. The keywords used were utilization, rainwater, and rainwater harvesting methods. Of the 30 references identified in the search phase, ten were eligible for inclusion in this review. Results: Harvested rainwater can be used for multiple purposes such as watering plants, washing, bathing, and even cooking if the water quality meets health standards. There are three fundamental components that should be present within the rainwater harvesting system: 1) a rainwater pipe that traps water, e.g., utilizing the shape of the roof surface, 2) a water distribution system, i.e., a system that transports water from the roof to the superficies through a gutter, and 3) a reservoir that stores rainwater such as barrels, tubs, or ponds. Conclusions: Water conservation efforts are needed to meet the demand for water in the face of increasingly limited supply. Harvesting rainwater is one of the methods of water conservation that can be carried out by each household of the community to collect raw rainwater for consumption and use. If rainwater harvesting is practiced in a sustainable manner, it will help maintain water and environmental sustainability, thus supporting the livelihood of present and future generations. Sea urchins have long been an important component of gleaning invertebrate fisheries and are valued for their highly nutritious gonads. Sea urchin fisheries are often unreported and unregulated, despite increasing indications of overexploitation. Data on the post-harvest utilization of sea urchins are limited, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. This study at 12 sites across four regions in Indonesia (Sulawesi, Moluccas, Nusa Tenggara, Papua) aimed to provide an overview of sea urchin utilization in eastern Indonesia. Data were collected from July to September 2020 using a questionnaire with a snowballing sampling method. There were 187 respondents (62.6% male and 37.4% female) ranged in age from 3-76 years old, and most had been collecting sea urchins for more than five years. Respondents mostly collected the sea urchins from coral reef or seagrass habitats. Four genera (Tripneustes, Diadema, Echinometra and Echinothrix) were identified. Mean catch ranged from 32 (Makassar) to 169 (Maluku Tengah) individual sea urchin per collection. Most respondents knew local names for sea urchins, especially those they collected. Almost 70% respondents used their catch mainly for home consumption, and only 4.8% respondents mainly selling their catch. Most urchins sold were whole or crudely de-spined, typically fetching IDR 500-1000 each. Additional post-harvest processing before sale included removing the gonads from the test and/or cooking, with a unit price of IDR 5,000-25,000/product. Commonly consumed raw, urchins were sometimes cooked (mostly barbecued). These data indicate a need for efforts towards socio-ecologically appropriate sea urchin conservation and fisheries management to address the widespread indications of increasing exploitation levels and declining sea urchin populations. The phylogenetic data of the Java eel population is crucial for future catadromous aquaculture in Indonesia. The study aims to know how eel species from Java and West India differ in their evolutionary patterns. Four river estuaries in Central Java and one estuary in West Java, Indonesia, were chosen as samples of Javanese eel origins. Phylogenic comparison data from five regions of the Western Indian Ocean and one region of the Philippines (Pacific Ocean) were examined, taken from GenBank® data. The results showed that BLAST from 25 eels from Central and West Java was Anguilla bicolor bicolor (homology value 96 - 100%). The phylogenetic tree revealed that samples from Java nested into the West Indian Ocean with two Clades but were isolated from the Pacific Ocean eels. There are 25 pairs of monophyletic samples estimated to be the most recent common ancestor among the Indian Ocean eel samples from west to west, east to east, and west to east. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
