Abstract: The paper aims at presenting the sets of ordinary letters and the types of simple and decorated initials used by Coresi since they function as integrating and harmonising artistic elements of the whole decoration of the books he printed. There are only four sets of letters and four main types of initials present in all Coresi's books, but they enjoy a large graphical variety. The paper studies their aesthetic achievement, identifying, at the same time, their origin or the inspiring sources, their aesthetic role in each book, and adjustments caused by different contextual requirements. Integrating vision is the word when it comes to analyze Coresi's types of letters: he uses inherited clichées as such, develops original models of initials and introduces western Renaissance innovations, using these typographical elements as versatile tools to keep the artistic harmony of its printed books.
