Existing climatological ionosphere models, for example, GISM, SCIONAV, WBMOD, and STIPEE, have known limitations that prevent their wide use. In the framework of ESA study “Radio Climatology Models of the Ionosphere: Status and Way Forward” their performance was assessed using experimental observations of ionospheric scintillation collected over the past years to evaluate their ability to properly support future missions, and eventually indicate their weaknesses for future improvements. Model limitations are more important in terms of the intensity scintillation parameter (S4). To improve them, the COSMIC model has been fit (scaling factor and offset) to the measured data, and it became the one better predicting the intensity scintillation in a statistical sense. Spacecraft entering a planetary atmosphere are surrounded by a plasma layer containing high levels of ionization due to the high temperatures on the shock layer. The high electron number densities cause attenuation and rotation of the emitted signal, leading to communication blackout. This work presents experimental measurements of radio signal attenuation and Faraday rotation due to an ionized plasma flow. These measurements are conducted at the VKI Plasmatron using circularly polarized directive horn lens antennas with a waveguide orthomode transducer. Clear attenuations are observed when the signal is propagating through the plasma, and Faraday rotation measurements show a good agreement with the theoretical estimation. The Federated Satellite Systems/ 3 Cat-5 (FSSCat) mission was the winner of the European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel Small Satellite (S 3 ) Challenge and overall winner of the 2017 Copernicus Masters competition. It consisted of two six-unit CubeSats. The Earth observation payloads were 1) the Flexible Microwave Payload 2 (FMPL-2) onboard 3 Cat-5/A, an L-band microwave radiometer and GNSS reflectometer (GNSS-R) implemented using a software-defined radio (SDR), and 2) the HyperScout-2 onboard 3 Cat-5/B, a hyperspectral camera, with the first experiment using artificial intelligence to discard cloudy images. FSSCat was launched on 3 September 2020 and injected into a 535-km synchronous orbit. 3 Cat-5/A was operated for three months until the payload was probably damaged by a solar flare and coronal mass ejection. During this time, all scientific requirements were met, including the generation of coarse-resolution and downscaled soil moisture (SM) maps, sea ice extent (SIE) maps, concentration and thickness maps, and even wind speed (WS) and sea surface salinity (SSS) maps, which were not originally foreseen. 3 Cat-5/B was operated a few more months until the number of images acquired met the requirements. This article briefly describes the FSSCat mission and the FMPL-2 payload and summarizes the main scientific results. Ionospheric disturbances induced by seismic activity have been studied in the last years by many authors, showing an impact both before and after the occurrence of earthquakes. In this study, the ionospheric scintillation produced by the 2021 La Palma volcano eruption is analyzed. The "Cumbre Vieja" volcano was active from September 19th to December 13th, 2021, and many magnitude 3–4 earthquakes were recorded, with some of them reaching magnitude 5. In this study the three methods: GNSS reference monitoring, GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) from NASA CYGNSS, and GNSS Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) from COSMIC and Spire constellations, are used, allowing us to compare and evaluate their performance in the same conditions. To compare the seismic activity with ionospheric scintillation, earthquakes’ generated energy, and percentile 95 % of the intensity scintillation parameter (S4), measurements have been computed every 6 h intervals for the whole duration of the volcanic eruption. GNSS-RO has shown the best correlation between earthquakes’ energy and S4, with values up to 0.09 when the perturbations occur around 18 h after the seismic activity. GNSS reference monitoring stations data also shows some correlation 18 h after and 7–8 days after. As expected, GNSS-R is the one that shows the smallest correlation, as the ionospheric signatures get masked by the signature of the surface where the reflection is taking place. Additionally, as expected as well, the three methods show a smaller correlation during the week before earthquakes. This work analyzes the quality of the soil moisture L3 (25 km) and L4 (1 km) products generated at the Barcelona Expert Center (BEC) in two sites located in distinct semi-arid regions, where measurement networks are installed: “Red de Estaciones de Medición de la Humedad del Suelo” (REMEDHUS), which is located in the central part of the Duero basin (Spain), and National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN), at Northeast of the Brazil. REMEDHUS has been used as a calibration/validation site for SMOS and SMAP missions. It is a dense network covering 35 x 35 km2 and it has 22 stations. The CEMADEN network provides a database for the development of early warnings for natural disasters that occurs in Brazil, such as droughts and floods. It is a sparse network covering 1000 x 1000 km2 with more than 500 station. Results show good correspondence between SMOS L4 data and the in situ soil moisture data for REMEDHUS and CEMADEN networks. Correlations mean range from 0.3 to 0.8, and depend mainly on the station situation, soil type, and land cover on both Spain and Brazil networks. For the average data of both series, the correlation coefficient is higher than 0.6. Results show that the L4 product are better correlated than the L3 product, although L4 and L3 products are quite similar. This indicates that both products are ready for its operational use, with L4 providing a better representation of the soil moisture status at finer scales. Este trabalho analisa a qualidade dos produtos L3 (25 km) e L4 (1 km) de umidade do solo gerados no Barcelona Expert Center (BEC) em dois locais localizados em regiões semi-áridas distintas, onde estão instaladas redes de medição: Estações de Medição de Umidade do Solo” (REMEDHUS), localizado na parte central da bacia do Douro (Espanha), e Centro Nacional de Monitoramento e Aviso Prévio de Desastres Naturais (CEMADEN), no nordeste do Brasil. O REMEDHUS foi usado como um local de calibração / validação para missões SMOS e SMAP. É uma rede densa cobrindo 35 x 35 km2 e possui 22 estações. A rede CEMADEN fornece um banco de dados para o desenvolvimento de alertas precoces de desastres naturais que ocorrem no Brasil, como secas e inundações. É uma rede esparsa cobrindo 1000 x 1000 km2 com mais de 500 estações. Os resultados mostram boa correspondência entre os dados SMOS L4 e os dados de umidade do solo in situ para as redes REMEDHUS e CEMADEN. As correlações variam de 0,3 a 0,8 e dependem principalmente da situação da estação, tipo de solo e cobertura do solo nas redes da Espanha e do Brasil. Para os dados médios de ambas as séries, o coeficiente de correlação é superior a 0,6. Os resultados mostram que o produto L4 está melhor correlacionado que o produto L3, embora os produtos L4 e L3 sejam bastante semelhantes. Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry and L-band microwave radiometry have been used for soil moisture, biomass, and cryosphere studies. Combining both technologies in a low-power and cost-effective solution could largely improve current Earth observations. 3 Cat-4 mission is a 1-Unit CubeSat technology demonstrator of the Flexible Microwave Payload - 1, a reduced size payload that combines these two technologies. This work presents the objectives of the 3 Cat-4 mission and the details of the spacecraft architecture and performance. Each spacecraft subsystem is detailed at hardware and software levels. In addition, the presented results indicate that the current spacecraft design will survive the flight conditions (i.e. thermal and structural ones).

Earth observation satellite programs are currently facing, for some applications, the need to deliver hourly revisit times, sub-kilometric spatial resolutions and near-real-time data access times. These stringent requirements, combined with the consolidation of small-satellite platforms and novel distributed architecture approaches, are stressing the need to study the design of new, heterogeneous and heavily networked satellite systems that can potentially replace or complement traditional space assets. In this context, this paper presents partial results from ONION, a research project devoted to study distributed satellite systems and their architecting characteristics. A design-oriented framework that allows selecting optimal architectures for a given user needs is presented in this paper. The framework has been used in the study of a strategic use-case and its results are hereby presented. From an initial design space of 5586 unique architectures, the framework has been able to pre-select 28 candidate designs by an exhaustive analysis of their performance and by quantifying their quality attributes. This very exploration of architectures and the characteristics of the solution space, are presented in this paper along with the selected solution and the results of a detailed performance analysis.

GEROS-ISS stands for GNSS REflectometry, radio occultation, and scatterometry onboard the International Space Station (ISS). It is a scientific experiment, successfully proposed to the European Space Agency in 2011. The experiment as the name indicates will be conducted on the ISS. The main focus of GEROS-ISS is the dedicated use of signals from the currently available Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) in L-band for remote sensing of the Earth with a focus to study climate change. Prime mission objectives are the determination of the altimetric sea surface height of the oceans and of the ocean surface mean square slope, which is related to sea roughness and wind speed. These geophysical parameters are derived using reflected GNSS signals (GNSS reflectometry, GNSS-R). Secondary mission goals include atmosphere/ionosphere sounding using refracted GNSS signals (radio occultation, GNSS-RO) and remote sensing of land surfaces using GNSS-R. The GEROS-ISS mission objectives and its design, the current status, and ongoing activities are reviewed and selected scientific and technical results of the GEROS-ISS preparation phase are described.

This work shows a state-of-the-art GNSS reflectometry endto-end performance simulator, selected for the ESA’s GNSS rEflectometry, Radio Occultation and Scatterometry onboard International Space Station (GEROS-ISS). For the efficient development process, the PAU/PARIS End-to-end Performance Simulator (P2EPS) are used as main building blocks for the GEROS-Simulator. To accommodate the GEROS specific situation of platform and instrument, P2EPS is modified. Additionally, several considerations in spaceborne GNSS-R techniques are newly updated in GEROS-SIM, improving the performance in terms of accuracy and completeness. GEROS-SIM will be delivered as a web application, i.e., executable via web browser connecting GEROS-SIM webpage hosted by UPCBarcelonaTech.

The spacecraft development work includes two stratospheric flights in the frame of the REXUS/BEXUS programme coordinated by the European Space Agency (ESA). Coherent and incoherent scattering of Earth-reflected GNSS signals as sensed by the P(Y) & C/A ReflectOmeter (PYCARO) payload will be evaluated using the main state-of-the art Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R) methodologies. Future space-borne activities could take advantage of it, including the GNSS REflectometry, Radio Occultation and Scatterometry onboard International Space Station (GEROS-ISS) experiment

UPCSat-1, es el primer proyecto de la Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya para construir y lanzar un pico- satélite. El objetivo principal de este proyecto es construir, ensamblar, testear y poner en órbita baja terrestre (LEO) un sensor óptico y un sensor de oxígeno monoatómico entre otros demostradores tecnológicos. Empezado en 2007 y actualmente en fase de integración, el satélite UPCSat-1 pretende demostrar la validez de la plataforma y las tecnologías que incorpora. Su objetivo es adquirir el know-how para la fabricación de CubeSats para preparar misiones más complejas en un futuro cercano. Por otro lado el proyecto tiene un fuerte componente educacional puesto que algunos de los subsistemas han sido desarrollados por nuestros estudiantes a través de sus proyectos finales de carrera. Se espera el lanzamiento para antes de 2015.

Given the all-pervasiveness of Systems thinking -which consists of thinking about things as systemsas a way of reasoning, in this work we will describe its application to make an interpretation of how to conceive and design a final year CDIO capstone course. Both the student teamwork structure as well as the complex engineering system itself addressed in the project are described in terms of entities, links, form and function, thereby pointing out their formal and functional interaction. The ultimate goal of the Systems thinking perspective is, given the necessary ingredients, to try maximizing the chances of the emergence of a fruitful capstone course, namely a culminating project that yields a set of students qualified to CDIO complex engineering systems.

3Cat-2 is a 6 U CubeSat mission designed to perform ocean altimetry by means of Global Navigation Satellite Systems Reflectometry (GNSS-R). In this paper 3Cat-2 mission is presented. The main payload is the novel dual-band altimeter P(Y) & C/A ReflectOmeter (PYCARO) which has already been tested from a pier and from an aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, an experiment from the DLR/SNSB Balloon-borne EXperiments for University Students (BEXUS) stratospheric balloon in North Sweden will be performed on October 2013 for the ultimate optimization of the payload parameters.

This paper reviews the relative calibration of an interferometric radiometer taking into account the experimental results of the first batch of receivers developed in the frame of the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission. Measurements show state-of-the-art baseline performance as long as the system is capable of correcting the effect of orbital temperature swing. A method to validate internal calibration during in-orbit deep-sky views and to correct linearity errors is also presented.

Accurate measurement of the antenna voltage patterns of large-aperture synthesis radiometers is critical in order to achieve good radiometric accuracy, and a very time consuming and expensive task. Measurement requirements and a tradeoff study relating radiometric accuracy degradation and number of elements to be measured are presented.

A complete and systematic noise analysis of radiometer front-ends, including both total power and correlation measurements, is presented. The procedure uses the concepts of noise waves and S-parameters, widely used in microwave systems design and takes into account full noise characterization of receivers including mismatch effects. The general formulation is compatible with known total power radiometer analysis and is specially appropriate in correlation radiometers for which the effect of nonideal components, such as input isolators, is analyzed. Along with numerical simulations, simple formulas are given to compute the measured visibility in nonideal conditions. The analysis is validated using experimental results consisting of correlation measurements of four receivers placed inside an anechoic chamber. Good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental data is observed.

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission was selected in May 1999 by the European Space Agency Earth Observation Programme Board to provide global and frequent soil moisture (SM) and sea surface salinity (SSS) maps. SMOS' single payload is the Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) sensor, an L-band two-dimensional aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer with multiangular and polarimetric imaging capabilities. The definition of the SMOS Level 2 Processor requires the selection of the optimum operation mode (dual-polarization or full-polarimetric) for each application, the specification of the required auxiliary data, and the optimum retrieval algorithms. Using the SMOS simulator and based on the experience gained in previous works, this paper presents a study of the SM and SSS retrieval capabilities over homogeneous pixels, in the two modes of operation with different auxiliary data. It is found that SSS retrievals using the first Stokes parameter measured in the dual-polarization mode perform somewhat worse than using the vertical (T/sub vv/) and horizontal (T/sub hh/) brightness temperatures measured in the full-polarimetric mode, and the performance degrades for cold waters due to the lower sensitivity of the brightness temperature to SSS at low sea surface temperature (SST). Due to the larger angular variation of T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/, SM retrievals using T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/ measured in the full-polarimetric mode exhibit a significant better performance over bare soils than over vegetation-covered soils. Over vegetation-covered soils vegetation parameters (opacity and albedo) can be inferred over a 550-km swath width in the full-polarimetric mode. However, since the first Stokes parameter is independent of both geometric and Faraday rotations, it is very robust in the presence of instrumental and geophysical errors. In the SSS retrieval problem and in the SM retrieval problem (with T/sub hh/ and T/sub vv/ measured in the full-polarimetric mode), the performance of the retrieval algorithms tested is not significantly altered if the model parameters are not exactly known, but are left as adjustable parameters in the optimization process.

The effect of the frequency dependence of the antenna voltage patterns within the bandwidth of an aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer is studied and quantified using actual antenna voltage patterns measured at different frequencies for the first nine receivers of the Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis instrument aboard the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission. A technique is proposed to mitigate this effect.

The European Space Agency’s Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission will be the first one using two-dimensional aperture synthesis radiometry for earth observation. This study presents the formulation that relates instrument observables and brightness temperature maps including cross-polar antenna voltage patterns, which may be also different from element to element. Finally, the radiometric accuracy degradation if cross-polar patterns are neglected in the image reconstruction is studied.

The Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) is the single payload of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity mission. MIRAS will be the first two-dimensional aperture synthesis radiometer for earth observation. Two-dimensional aperture synthesis radiometers can generate brightness temperature images by a Fourier synthesis process without mechanical antenna steering. To do so and have the necessary wide swath for earth observation, the array is formed by small and low directive antennas, which do not attenuate enough bright noise sources that may interfere with the measurements. This study analyzes the impact of the radio-frequency emission from the sun in the SMOS mission, reviews the basic image reconstruction algorithms, and proposes a technique to minimize sun effects.

The European Space Agency Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission aims at obtaining global maps of soil moisture and sea surface salinity from space for large-scale and climatic studies. It uses an L-band (1400–1427 MHz) Microwave Interferometric Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis to measure brightness temperature of the earth’s surface at horizontal and vertical polarizations ( h and v). These two parameters will be used together to retrieve the geophysical parameters. The retrieval of salinity is a complex process that requires the knowledge of other environmental information and an accurate processing of the radiometer measurements. Here, we present recent results obtained from several studies and field experiments that were part of the SMOS mission, and highlight the issues still to be solved.

Soil moisture and ocean salinity at surface level can be measured by passive microwave remote sensing at L-band. To provide global coverage data of soil moisture and ocean salinity with three-day revisit time, the Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) was selected by ESA (European Space Agency) in May 1999. SMOS' single payload is a Y-shaped 2-D aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer called MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer by Aperture Synthesis). SMOS presents some particular imaging peculiarities: variation of incidence and azimuth angles, different radiometric sensitivity and accuracy at each direction (pixels), and geometric polarization mixing. Therefore, the accuracy of the geophysical parameter retrieval depends on the knowledge of the angular dependence of the emissivity over a wide range of incidence and azimuth angles. The accuracy of the sea surface salinity retrievals depends on our capability to correct the wind-induced variation of the brightness temperatures. To better understand wind effects, ESA sponsored the WInd and Salinity Experiment 2000 (WISE-2000) from November 15, 2000, to January 16, 2001, in the Casablanca oil rig, at 40 km off the coast of Tarragona (Spain). This paper is divided into two parts. First, it presents the derived sensitivities of the brightness temperatures at vertical and horizontal polarizations with wind speed, and compares to Hollinger's measurements and numerical simulations. Second, these results are applied to the SMOS sea surface salinity (SSS) retrieval problem for different tracks within the swath. It is shown that, except for low SSS and sea surface temperature (SST), the retrieved SSS has a RMS error of approximately 1 psu in one satellite pass.

Two-dimensional aperture synthesis radiometry is the technology selected for ESA's SMOS mission to provide high resolution L-band radiometric imagery. The array topology is a Y-shaped structure. The position and number of redundant elements to minimise instrument degradation in case of element failure(s) are studied.

The Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) instrument will be the first radiometer using aperture synthesis techniques for Earth observation. It will be boarded in the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Earth Explorer Opportunity Mission of the European Space Agency and launched in 2005. The configuration under study in the MIRAS Demonstrator Pilot Project is a Y‐shaped array with 27 dual‐polarization L band antennas in each arm, spaced 0.89 wavelengths. In addition to these 81 antennas there are 3 additional ones between the arms for phase restoration and redundancy purposes and an extra one at the center of the Y array that is connected to a noise injection radiometer. The digitized in‐phase and quadrature outputs of each receiver are multiplexed in groups of four and optically transmitted to the hub where the complex cross correlations are computed. In this configuration there are 85 antennas‐receiving channels and 21 multiplexers. The objectives of this paper are twofold: (1) the study of the performance degradation of Y‐shaped aperture synthesis interferometric radiometers in case of single or multiple subsystem failures and (2) a reliability analysis at subsystem level.

The recent use of along-track interferometry (ATI) in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has shown promise for synoptic measurement of ocean surface currents. ATI-SARs have been used to estimate wave fields, currents, and current features. This paper describes and analyzes a dual-beam along-track interferometer to provide spatially resolved vector surface velocity estimates with a single pass of an aircraft. The design employs a pair of interferometer beams, one squinted forward and one squinted aft. Each interferometric phase is sensitive to the component of surface Doppler velocity in the direction of the beam. Therefore, a proper combination of these measurements provides a vector surface velocity estimate in one pass of the aircraft. The authors find that precise measurements dictate widely spaced beams and that the spatial resolution for the squinted SAR is essentially identical to the sidelooking case. Practical instrument design issues are discussed, and an airborne system currently in development is described. Through computer simulation, they observe the azimuthal displacement of interferometric phases by moving surfaces identical to those of conventional SAR and find that such displacement can bias the estimated surface velocity.

Current spaceborne radiometers do not achieve the required spatial resolution demanded by the scientific community due to antenna-size technological limitations. In recent years, several space agencies have been studying aperture synthesis interferometric radiometers as a way of overcoming these limitations, which are more evident at low microwave frequencies (e.g., at L-band), where sea surface salinity and soil moisture can be monitored. Interference is an important issue in any remote sensing instrument, but it is crucial in microwave radiometers, since the signal being measured is the spontaneous thermal noise emission. Interference analyses already exist for classic radiometers. The objective of this paper is the analysis of RF interference on interferometric radiometers. The study involves the analysis of possible interference sources that may affect the performance of such systems at L-band: (1) nearby emissions from radars, non-Geo-Stationary Orbit (GSO) and Mobile Satellite Services (GSO-MSS), (2) harmonics of lower frequency emissions, and (3) possible jamming.

The Scattering and Emissivity of rough surfaces involve solutions to non-linear differential equations. Different approaches have been used in the literature to obtain approximate solutions under some hypothesis. For example Kirchhoff solution is used when the roughness is gentle on the scale of the wavelength. In this paper the Method of Moments is used to analyze the scattering of arbitrary surfaces. No approximation about the scale roughness is necessary. Both Gaussian and Fractal surfaces have been modeled and compared. The introduction of fractal geometry provides a new tool to describe natural rough surfaces. A first inside to the properties and parameters that describe fractal geometry has been done in order to characterize them statistically. It has been demonstrated that geometrical and scattering characteristics are controlled by Fractal descriptors, including fractal dimension. As a first step, our simulations refer to a (topological) one-dimensional (1-D) profile embedded in a two-dimensional (2-D) space. Physically, this corresponds to assume that both the electromagnetic field and the surface height are constant along a fixed direction. Extension to the case of a 2-D surface embedded in a three-dimensional (3-D) space is not conceptually difficult, but any simulation run requires a much longer computational time. Furthermore, scattering results obtained for 1-D profiles give also a good indication of scattering dependence on 2-D surface parameters.

Sea surface salinity (SSS) has been recognized as a key parameter in climatological studies. SSS can be measured by passive microwave remote sensing at L band, where the sensitivity of the brightness temperatures shows a maximum and the atmosphere is almost transparent. To provide global coverage of this basic parameter with a 3-day revisit time, the SMOS mission was recently selected by ESA within the frame of the Earth Explorer Opportunity Missions. The SMOS mission will carry the MIRAS instrument, the first 2D L-band aperture synthesis interferometric radiometer. To address new challenges that this mission presents, such as incidence angle variation with pixel, polarization mixing, effect of wind and foam and others, a measurement campaign has been sponsored by ESA under the name of WISE 2000 and it is scheduled for October-November 2000. Two L-band radiometers, a video, a IR and a stereo-camera and four oceanographic and meteorological buoys will be installed in the oil platform 'Casablanca' located at 40 Km off the coast of Tarragona, where the sea conditions are representative of the Mediterranean open sea with periodic influence of the Ebro river fresh water plume.

The spatial resolution of current space-borne Earth observation radiometers is limited by the physical antenna aperture. This is especially critical at L-band, which exhibits high sensitivity to soil moisture and sea surface salinity. Interferometric radiometers (InR's) are currently being studied by several space agencies as a feasible alternative to overcome this problem. However, their calibration is a crucial issue since most techniques inherited from radio astronomy cannot be directly applied. Due to the large number of receiving channels, calibration techniques based on centralized noise injection from a single noise source will require a large and stable distribution network, which is technically very complex and unacceptable from the point-of-view of mass and volume. Procedures based on distributed noise injection from a set of noise sources through smaller distribution networks have been recently proposed by the authors as an alternative to alleviate these technological problems. In this paper, the analysis of these networks, the impact of the noise generated by the network losses on the calibration, and the impact of front-end reradiated noise are analyzed. Finally, the optimum circuit topologies and tolerances to which these networks have to be characterized in order to achieve the required calibration are derived. These configurations are formed by cascading basic 1:2 and 1:3 isolated power splitters. Isolators at receiver inputs have to be included in order to minimize offsets originating from the correlation of reradiation of receiver noise. It has been found that, in order to satisfy the calibration requirements of InR's, the S-parameters of the ensemble noise-injection network plus isolators have to be known to within 0.025-0.050 dB in amplitude and 0.5° in phase, and their physical temperature known to within 0.5°C.

This paper starts with a summary and classification of errors of any kind that corrupt the fundamental measurement performed by an InR (interferometric radiometer), the so-called visibilities. This summary is based on prior works from the authors concerning end-to-end rnodeling of the instrument. The paper follows with a trade-off analysis of the capability of different calibration approaches to remove those errors and, at the end, to recover a map of brightness temperatures. In order to perform the trade-off analysis, extensive simulations have been undertaken to analyze the approaches found in the literature: the redundant space method, used in radio astronomy, the G-matrix method, used in ESTAR, and the Noise injection method. both centralized and distributed, proposed for MIRAS. A short description is made of each one and a comparative table is presented. The trade off is presented in terms of what kind of errors can be removed by each method, hardware requirements, robustness and on-ground/on-board input data required to perform such error correction.

Spaceborne and ground-based radiometric measurements at microwave and millimeterwave frequencies have proved able to monitor hydrometeors, but at present the angular resolution of those systems is limited by the radiometer's antenna beam width. Efforts to improve the angular resolution of such systems by applying the interferometric techniques successfully used in radio astronomy [Thompson et al, 1986; Ruf et al., 1988] have encountered two main limitations. First, imaging interferometric radiometers are extremely complex, with a very large number of antennas and correlators. Second, because of the wide field of view, the array size is restricted by spatial decorrelation effects that cannot be simply compensated for by an adjustable delay, as in radio astronomy. Bandwidth segmentation overcomes this limitation at the expense of an even higher system's complexity. To overcome these limitations, this paper presents a technique that may achieve high angular resolution with a minimum number of antennas, taking advantage of the spatial filtering due to signal decorrelation. It describes both the basic theory behind this process and the experimental results at X band with a random static distribution of rubber bits and with simulated rain. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions and computer simulations, showing the inevitable trade-off between angular resolution and radiometric sensitivity.

Millimetre-wave radiometry of the earth's surface from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with a resolution of a few km requires antenna apertures several metres across and sub-second scanning times. Fulfilling these requirements with a mechanically scanned real-aperture antenna presents formidable mechanical challenges. An attractive alternative described here is to use synthetic aperture techniques employing a sparse-array of antennas that trade the mechanical complexity of real-aperture imaging for the electrical complexity of synthetic aperture imaging. We present results of an ESA-sponsored study aimed at seeking the optimum technique for high performance synthetic aperture mm-wave radiometry from LEO.

This paper presents a new method for receiver calibration of interferometric radiometers. It is based on the distributed noise injection mechanism and it consists of fully calibrating the baseline error terms of the central antennas (which share the same noise source) while keeping only separable error calibration for the distant ones. This improves the accuracy of the shortest baselines, which are the most significant ones due to the smoothness of the brightness temperature to measure. Simulations show that, compared to previously reported methods, the improvement on the radiometric resolution can be as high as 3.9. The robustness against frequency response mismatch between receivers is improved by a factor 2.9.

Analytical expressions for the errors generated in 1 bit/2-level digital correlators (IB/2L) are derived: threshold errors in comparators and timing (skew and jitter) errors in samplers. These expressions are used to specify the parameters of the comparators and samplers in high performance 1B/2L digital correlators that are required in Earth observation synthetic aperture radiometry.

La tesis contiene en primer lugar un estudio de las técnicas de interferometria radiometrica, con énfasis en las causas de error y su impacto en las características del sensor. A continuación se proponen y comparan varias técnicas de calibracion basadas en la inyección de ruido.Un aspecto notable de la tesis consiste en el desarrollo de técnicas de reconstrucción de la imagen radiometrica adaptadas a la geometría del sensor miras propuesto por la agencia espacial europea (esa).La tesis incluye tambien el diseño de un prototipo a escala reducida de radiometro interferometrico que se ha utilizado para verificar los resultados teóricos y simulados.En resumen se trata de un trabajo muy completo y riguroso, con numerosas aportaciones originales, que han sido contrastadas experimentalmente.

When computing the radiometric resolution of an interferometric radiometer the correlation among the errors of different baselines is usually assumed negligible. ln this way: a) the radiometric sensitivity turns out to be pixel independent (except for antenna pattern effects), and b) the error of the average of P redundant baselines is reduced by a factor of (P)1/2. While this may be the case in radioastronomy applications, for an on-board instrument where all the baselines are measured at the same time interval the errors will actually be correlated. This has two effects: a) The radiometric resolution changes from pixel to pixel and b) the radiometric resolution improvement introduced by redundance is reduced as compared with the case of independent errors. In this paper this correlation is computed and the results obtained are applied, first, to a fully redundant (all possible baselines are actually measured) filled linear array to analyze the actual radiometric improvement, and, next, to the same array without redundance to investigate the dependence of sensitivity on pixel information.

Due to an increasing entry barrier to both universities and researchers in conventional small satellites initiatives, there has been an emergence of smaller and cheaper spacecrafts like PocketQubes, a much more affordable option for public entities. Considering all that, this thesis has been developed as part of a project undertaken by the UPC NanoSat Lab which started as an IEEE GRSS initiative named PoCat. The objective of the PoCat project is to design, develop and test three single unit picosatellites with each featuring the following different payloads, a Video Graphics Array (VGA) camera, a Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) monitoring system at L-band and an RFI monitoring system at K-Band. The three satellites, however, contain the same avionics core composed of the On-Board Computer (OBC), Communication System (COMMS), Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS) and Electrical Power Supply System (EPS). Given this scenario, the purpose of this report is to give insights regarding the on-board software development for PocketQubes, which as of writing this report there is still room for debate concerning their standardization. Conceptually, the OBC system acts as the brain of the satellite. As for the technology, the OBC is build upon the STM32L476 microcontroller due to its memory storage, power efficiency and processing power. Performing the power management as well as giving response to events are the main objectives of the OBC. In order to do the latter, the flight software is based on a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) called FreeRTOS which has been selected above other Operating System (OS) due to its predictability, compliance with the required deadlines, support, available documentation, compatibility with previous projects, licensing costs, and certifications. According to FreeRTOS, the program is structured into independent tasks where each one features a priority in line with their criticality. Then, the project is constituted by eight tasks, with five designed to operate the subsystems of the satellite, one for memory writing purposes and the remaining two are devoted to implement FreeRTOS software timers. Furthermore, tasks can communicate with each other by means of task notifications or event groups, both being software tools provided by the operating system.

This final degree thesis describes the development and implementation of an ADCS simulator for the 3Cat-8 mission of the UPC NanoSat Lab, which enables the calculation of the actuators and controller variables. Additionally, based on the ADCS simulator, specially focuses on the ATHENA ionic thruster control analysis ensuring the proper ADCS actuators sizing of the spacecraft. The control is solely achieved by magnetic actuators. It is shown that the satellite can maintain the desired orientation with low angular rates, required during the orbital raising maneuver. A new configuration of the control stability with linear attitude dynamics for satellite thruster, based on a control algorithm using attitude quaternion and angular velocity feedback is also described. To conclude, the presented numerical results prove the efficiency of the applied method based on initial theoretical considerations and the design measurements of the satellite and the thruster.

Due to the recent licensing of the bands for the new 26 GHz 5G communications band, which ranges from 24.25 GHz up to 25.25 GHz, there is a rising concern that spurious emissions from the 5G communications could interfere with passive Earth Observation measurements in the 23.8 GHz water vapor resonance band, degrading meteorological forecasts capabilities, and affecting climate change monitoring. The Frequency Allocations in Remote Sensing (FARS) Technical Committee from IEEE-GRSS has procured the development of a RFI monitoring payload to detect possible interferences in this band that might be caused by 5G communications. This work shows the design and verification of the RFI monitoring payload, that is compatible with the PocketQube?s being developed in the framework of the "IEEE GRSS Open PocketQube Kit" educational initiative.
