In this study, a new red ceramic pigment has been developed within a perovskite structure, and microwave heat treatments have been applied. Those red ceramic pigments within the YAlO
3 system doped with chromium with the nominal composition Y0.98 Al0.98 Cr0.04 O3 were synthesized by traditional routes and alternative methods like coprecipitation. Also, heat treatment has been studied comparing a traditional electric and microwave kiln. Different flux agents have been incorporated to improve the synthesis reaction. Prepared pigments have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) as having a predominant phase of perovskite structure, which is responsible for the red shade, and a minority garnet phase that causes more brown colorations. Studies by Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy gave rise to a series of absorption bands that indicate the presence of Cr(III) in the octahedral position corresponding to perovskite and Cr(IV) corresponding to garnet in both the octahedral and tetrahedral positions. The perovskite phase is favored with the use of flux mix, corroborating the UV-visible results and being more pronounced in traditional high temperature thermal treatments. The coprecipitation route has been studied to increase the reactivity of the particles given their nanometric size; however, this reactivity favors a greater appearance of undesirable garnet phases with both types of flux. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) micrographs offer information obtained from the secondary electrons of predominantly cubic crystalline phases with sizes between 1 µm and 2 µm in pigments synthesized via the traditional method and sizes less than 1µm together with the glassy phase in pigments synthesized via coprecipitation. Microwave thermal treatments have been studied, obtaining pigments with a majority structure of perovskite and garnet at lower temperatures and relatively short synthesis times. The feasibility of use in porous single-fired ceramic glazes has been studied, whose chromatic coordinates have been collected using an Ultraviolet-Visible Spectrophotometer based on the CIEL*a*b* system. GLASS recycling ,WASTE recycling ,PHOTOVOLTAIC effect ,DIFFERENTIAL thermal analysis ,WASTE products ,INDUSTRIAL wastes ,CONDUCTION electrons - Abstract
Because of the increasing demand for photovoltaic energy and the generation of end-of-life photovoltaic waste forecast, the feasibility to produce glass substrates for photovoltaic application by recycling photovoltaic glass waste (PVWG) material was analyzed. PVWG was recovered from photovoltaic house roof panels for developing windows glass substrates; PVWG was used as the main material mixed with other industrial waste materials (wSG). The glass was casted by air quenching, annealed, and polished to obtain transparent substrates samples. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) was deposited as back contact on the glass substrates by spray pyrolysis. The chemical composition of the glass materials was evaluated by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), the thermal stability was measured by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and the transmittance was determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The surface of the glass substrates and the deposited FTO were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the amorphous or crystalline state of the specimens were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the sheet resistance was evaluated by the four-point probe method. The sheet resistance of the deposited FTO on the wSG substrate was 7.84 ± 3.11 Ω/□, lower than that deposited on commercial soda-lime glass (8.48 ± 3.67 Ω/□), meaning that this material could present improved conduction of the produced electrons by the photovoltaic effect. This process may represent an alternative to produce glass substrates from waste materials that could be destined for photovoltaic applications, especially the production of ecological photovoltaic windows. Solid solutions of ceramic pigments of red shade have been synthesized based on YAlO3 perovskite structure doped with chromium by means of conventional synthesis; that is, the "ceramic route". To optimize this synthesis, an emphasis has been made on the study of stoichiometry, calcination conditions and mineralizer incorporation. Various studies have demonstrated the high stability of perovskite structures, which ensures stable coloration at high temperatures. This is a highly important factor in the ceramic sector, given the scarcity of red glazes functional at temperatures close to those required of porcelain stoneware and their environmental constraints. Such a limitation makes it impossible in the European community to manufacture using toxic materials such as Se and Cd (cadmium sulfoselenide) that offer interesting colors at low temperatures. Pigments have been synthesized within the Y1−xCrxAlO3, YCrxAl1−xO3 and Y1−xAl1−yCrx+yO3 chromium-doped systems in molar ratios between n = 0.01 molar and n = 0.10 molar. The pigments obtained have been characterized by X-ray diffraction to identify the crystalline phases responsible for the shade; that is, the formation of the perovskite crystalline structure YAlO3 responsible for the red shade, together with lateral phases of garnet Y3Al5O12 of lower intensity. Visible ultraviolet spectrophotometry shows absorption bands corresponding to Cr(III) in octahedral position and the appearance of Cr(IV) in both octahedral and tetrahedral positions. The morphology of the samples was studied using a scanning electron microscope, obtaining information from the secondary and back scattered electrons. The viability of its use in ceramic glazes was verified after applying them mixed at 4% by weight in a glaze to an industrial porous single-firing cycle, collecting the L*a*b* chromatic coordinates using a visible ultraviolet spectrophotometer based on the CIE L*a*b* system, giving rise to red colorations. The present communication describes the synthesis of anti-slip enamel exhibiting glass-ceramic nature using new matte frits and raw materials. The glass-ceramic glazes obtained are characterized by various instrumental techniques (X-ray fluorescence (XRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), mechanical profilometry and microhardness measurements) to elucidate the nature of the crystallized phases, their morphology, surface roughness and the finished tile microhardness. The quality of the glazed piece is evaluated by the regulations of chemical resistance, stain-resistance and slipperiness. The enamel obtained devitrifies in crystals of calcium and barium silicoaluminates. It complies with anti-slip and stain-resistance standards, because its surface roughness is similar to that of non-slip enamel.

This work describes the synthesis of LaFeO3 oxide, using a one-step hydrothermal synthesis route, to obtain a solid exhibiting superficial, morphological and textural properties useful for potential applications. The synthesis process starts from corresponding metal nitrates of lanthanum and iron in well-defined concentration and KOH as mineralizing agent. The reaction is developed in a Teflon-lined stainless steel autoclave at 300 °C for 14 days. The composition and surface area were determined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and nitrogen adsorption isotherms (BET), verifying the obtaining of a stoichiometric, high, and active phase of oxide. The crystalline structure was evaluated with X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), showing a pure orthorhombic perovskite phase. TPR results show the development of three single steps at different temperatures, kinetically detectable and related with reduction of component oxides. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM-TEM) results showed a remarkable degree of crystallization, favouring a specific morphology as a result of the low consolidation temperature of the perovskite phase. Catalytic test by means of methane reaction, performed along 240 on stream, reveals a light deactivation rate, decreasing progressively 7.1% until 60% of methane conversion, indicating the improved morphological and surface characteristics for potential applications.

Treball Final de Grau en Química. Codi: QU0943. Curs acadèmic: 2019/2020 Over the last years, an increasing concern has emerged regarding the eco-friendly management of plastic, glass and ceramic waste. Nowadays, the world economy remains heavily dependent on primary resources, which are becoming increasingly scarce on the basis of the current lineal economy model. For this reason, it is essential to evolve towards a circular economy and the recycling of waste. In recent years, composite materials have experienced a rapid growth in their development and use until becoming a commonly material in our daily live and replacing many conventionals materials such as metals, ceramic or polymers. This is due to the advantages that they can offer. The principal objective of fiber-reinforced composite is to acquire materials with high strength and high elastic modulus /stiffness. In this work, composite materials are formed by a ceramic matrix and a glass fiber or plastic fiber reinforcement. Several porcelain stoneware tile compositions are prepared using volume fraction between 5% and 75% of wt funcionalizate glass fibers. Then, the composition is examined. Previously, fibers were functionalizate by a mullite synthesis. The optimal treatment for mullite phase formation and higher mechanical resistance for ceramic material are obtained. Structural characterization of funcionalizate glass fibers and recycled plastics are studied with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) by using X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Thermal Analysis/Thermogravimetric (ATD/TG).

Codi: QU0943. Curs acadèmic: 2017/2018 Mullite has achieved outstanding importance as a material for both traditional and advanced ceramics because of its favourable thermal and mechanical properties. Mullite displays various Al to Si ratios referring to the solid solution Al4+2xSi2−2xO10−x, with x ranging between about 0.2 and 0.9 (about 55 to 90 mol% Al2O3) [1]. In this work, the functionalization of the recycled glass fibers (obtained from the glycolysis process) with mullite crystals and its introduction into the precursor composition of the ceramic substrate was proposed. Mullite were first prepared by sol-gel method using colloidal silica and AlCl3·6H2O in water system. The gel mullite precursor was fired in the range 1000-1300ºC soaking times 30–300 min. The resultant materials were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX). On the other hand, the glass fibers were functionalizing through the previous mullite synthesized. Several porcelain stoneware tile compositions were prepared using high alumina clay, low alumina clay, kaolin, Turkish feldspar (Na), feldspar (Na/Mg), feldespathic sand and glass fiber functionalize. The resultant materials were studied by X-Ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX) and compressive test. High mechanical resistance ceramic material (> 450 Kg/cm2) was obtained
