Soil use and management modify mycorrhizal interactions, but how these changes affect the growth and nutrition of crops under different contexts has been poorly studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) spore communities belonging to two no-till cropping systems (soybean monoculture and soybean-maize rotation), and uncultivated grasslands replicated at four locations along a regional geographic gradient on soybean mycorrhizal colonization and performance. At a regional scale, AMF spore richness was higher in uncultivated grasslands, intermediate in crop rotations, and lower in monocultures. Arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization in soybean roots was also higher in uncultivated soils but did not differ between no-tillage systems. Soybean growth was positively affected by AMF from uncultivated grasslands in comparison to control without AMF. Instead, there were no significant effects of AMF from no-till cropping systems. Foliar P concentration was lower in monocultures irrespective of AMF. At the local scale, patterns were highly variable and differed between locations. These results highlight the importance of scales for management decisions in agriculture and add further support for the context-dependent nature of mycorrhizal interactions. Two main soil management practices are generally used for soybean production: monoculture (MC) and crop rotation (CR). These strategies have different impacts on soil microbial communities. Among them, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are well known to provide access to nutrients in a majority of cultivated plants. AMF communities have been shown to be more diverse in CR than in MC. Because AMF species differ in their effects on nutrition and development of plants, it could be expected that soil biota from different soil management practices affect soybean yield and quality. Therefore the objective of this study was to examine the combined effects of soil microbial communities and soil management practices (MC and CR) on yield, protein content, and oil quality of soybean grown under greenhouse conditions. The effects of three soil treatments, namely: sterile (S); microorganisms without AMF (MO); and microorganisms with AMF (AMF) were evaluated. These treatments were applied to soils from two crop management practices (CR and MC). Sterile soil promoted lower numbers of pods and seed weight per plant in MC but not in CR. AMF showed increased seed protein content (12?14%) whereas MO presented increased oil concentration (20?27%) (mainly within CR). Soybean grown with AMF from CR soil showed significantly higher amounts of oleic acid (21?25%), and lower linoleic acid (9%) when compared with other treatments. Findings from this study suggest that soybean yield and quality are affected by crop management practices and soil biota composition. Diacanthodes (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) is a fungal genus with stipitate basidiomata and a combination of ornamented and dextrinoid basidiospores that is unique among the poroid fungi. Although some hypotheses based on morphological features speculated about the phylogenetic relationships of the taxon, they have never been tested based on molecular data. We performed molecular phylogenetic analyses including specimens of Diacanthodes from the Neotropics and Africa using the internal transcribed spacers (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 = ITS) and the D1–D2 domains of the 28S gene of the nuclear rDNA regions, as well as the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF-1α) protein-coding gene. Our study revealed Diacanthodes as a member of the ‘core polyporoid’ clade within the Polyporales. Two new species from South America: Diacanthodes cerebriporoides and D. neotropicalis, a new combination D. coffeae from Africa and notes on the other Diacanthodes species are presented. Terrestrial ecologists have identified multifaceted controls-climate, biogeography, disturbances, and their interactions-that shape how plant communities in natural ecosystems organize in space and time. Multiple documented interactions directly link plant diversity with other biotic guilds (herbivores, root symbionts, bacteria, and pathogens) and ecosystem processes [carbon (C) and nutrient cycling] (1). However, all appears to go awry when exotic (non-native) plant species invade and establish themselves without human intervention; such changes affect the functioning and diversity of natural ecosystems (2). Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. Aim: A growing number of studies show a discrepancy between the isotopic composition of xylem water and plant water sources. We tested the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the isotopic composition of Acacia caven xylem water. As the most common plant-fungal association, AMF might explain this isotopic mismatch. Methods: Seedlings were grown with and without AMF and irrigated with the same water. After 120 days, stem and soil samples were collected and following cryogenic distillation, H and O isotopic composition of xylem and soil water, as well as irrigation water, was measured. Results: Xylem water of non-mycorrhizal seedlings was significantly depleted in 2H compared to soil water (differences up to −15.6‰). When AMF were present, the depletion was significantly higher and appeared for both H and O (differences up to −24.6‰ for δ2H and − 2.9‰ for δ18O between soil and xylem water). Conclusions: Results suggest that isotopic fractionation occurred during water uptake in this xerophytic species. To explain this, we propose an aquaporin-driven mechanism mediating water transport via transmembrane passage. Furthermore, we show for the first time, that AMF enhance the observed discrimination against heavy isotopes, probably by enforcing water passage through aquaporins. It is generally assumed that recruitment and expansion of alien species along elevation gradients are constrained by climate. But, if plants are not fully constrained by climate, their expansion could be facilitated or hindered by other factors such as biotic interactions. Here, we assessed the composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in soils along an elevation gradient (i.e. 900 m, 1600 m, 2200 m and 2700 m a.s.l.) through a fungal DNA meta-barcoding approach. In addition, we studied in the greenhouse the effects of AMF on growth and phosphorous (P) nutrition of seedlings of the alien trees Gleditsia triacanthos, Ligustrum lucidum and Pyracantha angustifolia cultivated in soils from those elevations, spanning the elevation at which they already form monospecific stands (below 1450 m a.s.l.) and higher elevations, above their current range of distribution in montane ecosystems of Central Argentina. For comparison, we also included in the experiment the dominant native tree Lithraea molleoides that historically occurs below 1300 m a.s.l. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal community composition showed strong community turnover with increasing elevation. The effects of these AMF communities on plant growth and nutrition differed among native and alien trees. While P nutrition in alien species? seedlings was generally enhanced by AMF along the whole gradient, the native species benefited only from AMF that occur in soils from the elevation corresponding to its current altitudinal range of distribution. Based on molecular evidence and morphological analyses, a new species in the genus Trametopsis is revealed. Trametopsis aborigena sp. nov. is proposed and described from South America. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of ITS and LSU rDNA sequences suggest that Trametopsis cervina seems to encompass more than one species and confirm previous results showing that Antrodiella brasiliensis groups with Trametopsis. The morphological analyses of type specimens of A. brasiliensis and A. luteocontexta revealed a shared morphological pattern with Trametopsis and their combinations in Trametopsis are proposed. The circumscription of Trametopsis is discussed since all the studied specimens revealed a previously overlooked arrangement of characters, i.e., cylindrical and slightly curved to allantoid basidiospores and a metachromatic hyphal system monomitic in the context and dimitic in the tubes. Pérez-Harguindeguy et al., Plant functional traits are the features (morphological, physiological, phenological) that represent ecological strategies and determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels and influence ecosystem properties. Variation in plant functional traits, and trait syndromes, has proven useful for tackling many important ecological questions at a range of scales, giving rise to a demand for standardised ways to measure ecologically meaningful plant traits. This line of research has been among the most fruitful avenues for understanding ecological and evolutionary patterns and processes. It also has the potential both to build a predictive set of local, regional and global relationships between plants and environment and to quantify a wide range of natural and human-driven processes, including changes in biodiversity, the impacts of species invasions, alterations in biogeochemical processes and vegetation-atmosphere interactions. The importance of these topics dictates the urgent need for more and better data, and increases the value of standardised protocols for quantifying trait variation of different species, in particular for traits with power to predict plant-and ecosystem-level processes, and for traits that can be measured relatively easily. Updated and expanded from the widely used previous version, this handbook retains the focus on clearly presented, widely applicable, step-by-step recipes, with a minimum of text on theory, and not only includes updated methods for the traits previously covered, but also introduces many new protocols for further traits. This new handbook has a better balance between whole-plant traits, leaf traits, root and stem traits and regenerative traits, and puts particular emphasis on traits important for predicting species' effects on key ecosystem properties. Aims Increasing evidence worldwide indicates that high mountain regions are not immune to invasion by alien plants. Here we aimed to address whether three major woody invaders of low-mountain areas are constrained to lower altitudes due to climatic restrictions or just by low propagule pressure. We hypothesize that the increasing climatic harshness towards higher altitudes restricts seedling establishment and survival of these woody invaders and thus their potential for altitudinal expansion.Methods The study was carried out in the Sierras Grandes Mountains, Córdoba, central Argentina (32º 50?S, 64º 90?W). We addressed the hypothesis with an experimental approach, dissociating the effect of the environmental gradient from that of propagule pressure, by discarding the influence of seed sources. We translocated seeds of Gleditsia triacanthos L., Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton. and Pyracantha angustifolia (Franch.) C.K.Schneid. along the altitudinal gradient (from 900 to 2700 m asl). Seven sites were selected along the altitudinal gradient, spaced every 200?400 m. Three plots (4 x 4 m) were selected within each altitudinal site and excluded from livestock; 100 seeds of each species were sown within each plot (6300 seeds in total). Seedling emergence and survival was monitored during two growing seasons and soil temperature and moisture was recorded as well. The field experiment was complemented with lab assays.Important Findings: Climate along this altitudinal gradient might be least restrictive at mid elevations, as a result of the intersection between opposite soil temperature and moisture gradients. Sown seeds germinated along the whole altitudinal gradient and seedlings successfully established and over-wintered well above their current altitudinal distribution (up to 2200 m for Ligustrum and 2400 m for Gleditsia and Pyracantha). Additional lab assays confirmed field patterns and gave some insights into contrasting regeneration strategies between these invaders that might help to overcome stochastic environmental constraints in the germination stage. Overall, seedlings of three major woody invaders of low-mountain woodlands can establish and survive at higher elevations than their current distribution. In contrast to natives, they seem to be broad climate tolerators, rather than specialized stress tolerators, capable of germinating and growing across a wide elevational range. While long term experiments might be necessary to fully address the potentials for altitudinal expansion, out results on early lifecycle stage suggest that the invaders studied here would have mostly a dispersal barrier rather than a climate barrier to establish in the upper belt of the Sierras Grandes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the fire effects on the AMF spore communities and soil chemical properties as well as the existence of possible correlations between them in the Chaco Serrano Forests of central Argentina. Our hypothesis is that the fire has a negative impact on the community of AMF spores (i.e. density, diversity, richness and evenness) and soil chemical properties. In addition, we expect to find a high correlation between changes in the communities of fungi and soil chemical properties. We selected five areas in the 'Sierras Pampeanas' mountain ranges within the Chaquean region in central Argentina. In each of them we selected adjacent burned and unburned forest sites. Burned sites have all the same time since fire occurrence (August-November 2009) and soil samples were collected in autumn (April) and spring (November) in 2010. The fire events had direct negative effects on AMF spore communities. Evenness, and notably diversity and richness of AMF spores decreased in the burned sites. Density of AMF spores was not affected by fire. With the exception of C:N, nitrate and electrical conduc- tivity, soil parameters showed significant differences between burned and unburned sites. The changes in AMF spore composition were not significantly correlated with most of the soil variables measured here. The results of this study suggest that fire occurrence negatively affect AMF communities. These effects do not seem to be mediated by changes in soil abiotic properties. We studied the actual links between mycorrhizal fungi, nutrient availability and plant development in several sites of fragmented Chaco forests. Specifically, we evaluated whether arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and dark septate endophytes (DSE) colonization and availability of soil nutrients are related to growth (biomass and plant height) and reproductive traits (pollen size and pollen and fruit production) of two ruderal, annual, congeneric Euphorbia species along a gradient of forest fragmentation. We assessed relationships between forest fragment size and isolation, nutrient availability, mycorrhizal fungal variables and plant development at eleven Chaquean forest fragments (0.5?1000 ha) immersed in an agricultural landscape in central Argentina. Mycorrhizal colonization was not related to forest fragment isolation, positively related to forest fragment size and negatively related to soil nutrient availability in both hosts along the fragmentation gradient. Plant reproductive and vegetative traits were related to mycorrhizal colonization. In general, plant height, biomass, and fruit production were negatively related to AMF, and pollen production was positively related to DSE, in both ruderal hosts (native and exotic). We found remarkable relationships along a forest fragmentation gradient that reliably link forest fragment size to lower nutrient availability and increased mycorrhizal colonization in native/exotic ruderal hosts, while negatively linking AMF colonization to plant development and reproductive success. Ectomycorrhizal fungi constitute an important component of soil biota in Nothofagus forests in Patagonia. However, ectomycorrhizal fungal community is poorly known in this region. Here, we assess biodiversity and community compositions of ectomycorrhizal fungal species associated with Nothofagus dombeyi, N. obliqua and N. alpina. We selected three monospecific Nothofagus forest sites for each species within the boundaries of the Lanin National Park in Northern Patagonia. Ectomycorrhizal fungal species were identified based on morphotyping and rDNA (ITS and 28S rDNA) sequence analysis using both universal and taxonspecific primers. Contrary to previous studies on congeneric host trees, our results showed no significant differences among Nothofagus forest types in terms of fungal biodiversity and community composition. The forests of Nothofagus pumilio have historically been affected by forest fires. The effects of fire on certain above and belowground, biotic and abiotic components of these ecosystems have been previously documented, albeit belowground components have received much less attention. It has been suggested that the effects observed in the short-term after a fire usually differ from the longer-term effects. The long-term effects of fire (i.e. >5 years after burning) on belowground components in Nothofagus forests are currently unknown. In the present study we evaluated the long-term effect of fire on ectomycorrhiza (ECM) colonization and morphotype composition in N. pumilio roots, as well as soil chemical properties in temperate forests in Patagonia. Sampling was conducted in three mature monospecific forests. In each, nearby burned and unburned sites were selected. The time since the occurrence of fires differed between areas (i.e. 6?10 years). Within each site, 3 transects of 40 m were established randomly along which 5 samples of roots and soil were collected in spring and autumn. The main results were: (1) in comparison with the unburned site, ECM colonization was lower in the burned site in the area with the shorter time length since fire occurrence and no effects in the other two areas were observed; (2) richness and diversity were not significantly affected by fire but there was a significant effect of season for both parameters, being higher in spring; (3) ECM dominance was significantly higher in the unburned than in the burned site in Tronador, while in Challhuaco the opposite was observed, mainly in autumn; (4) in general carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous decreased while pH increased in the burned sites; (5) ECM colonization positively correlated with NH4+ and phosphorus and negatively with pH but was not significantly correlated with organic matter or any other soil variable. Altogether the results suggest that effects of fire on ectomycorrhiza and soil properties in N. pumilio forests are probably related to the time elapsed since fire occurrence combined with site characteristics. We studied the decomposition of shoot and root tissues of four plant species from central Argentina belonging to contrasting functional types: a deciduous shrub (Acacia caven), a perennial forb (Hyptis mutabilis), an annual forb (Bidens pilosa) and a tussock grass (Jarava pseudoichu). They were grown from seed in a greenhouse in isolation or in 2- or 4-species mixtures, with and without arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and then placed to decompose under natural conditions in the field. AMF significantly enhanced decomposition of shoots, but not that of roots, independently of species identity and species-mixture composition. Our results suggest that AMF may be significantly affecting ecosystem functioning through the observed plant-mediated effects on decomposition. Fil: Urcelay, Roberto Carlos. 1. Dominant plant functional types (PFTs) are expected to be primary determinants of communities of other above- and below-ground organisms. Here, we report the effects of the experimental removal of different PFTs on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) communities in a shrubland ecosystem in central Argentina. 2. On the basis of the biomass-ratio hypothesis and plant resource use strategy theory, we expected the effect of removal of PFTs on AMF colonization and spores to be proportional to the biomass removed and to be stronger when more conservative PFTs were removed. The treatments applied were: undisturbed control (no plant removed), disturbed control (mechanical disturbance), no shrub (removal of deciduous shrubs), no perennial forb (removal of perennial forbs), no graminoid (removal of graminoids) and no annual forb (removal of annual forbs). AMF colonization was assessed after 5, 17 and 29 months. Total density of AMF spores, richness and evenness of morphotaxa, and AMF functional groups were quantified after 5, 17, 29, 36 and 39 months. 3. Five months after the initial removal we found a significant reduction in total AMF colonization in all plots subjected to PFT removals and in the disturbed control plots, as compared with the undisturbed controls. This effect disappeared afterwards and no subsequent effect on total colonization and colonization by arbuscules was observed. In contrast, a significant increase in colonization by vesicles was observed in months 17 and 29, mainly in no graminoid plots. In general, treatments did not significantly affect AMF spores in the soil. On the other hand, no annual forb promoted transient (12–18 months) higher ammonia availability, and no shrub promoted lower nitrate availability in the longer term (24–28 months). 4. Synthesis. Our experiment, the first to investigate the effects of the removal of different PFTs on AMF communities in natural ecosystems, indicates that AMF communities are resilient to changes in the soil and in the functional composition of vegetation. Furthermore, it does not provide consistent evidence in support of the biomass-ratio hypothesis or differential trait-based direct or indirect effects of different PFTs on AMF in this particular system.
