Rincon de Parangueo (RP) is a Quaternary maar crater located in the Michoacan‐Guanajuato Volcanic Field in central Mexico. Like other volcanic craters in the region, the central part was occupied by an endorheic lacustrine system. As a consequence of extensive groundwater extraction, the perennial lake started a gradual desiccation process and now the remnant ponds host a highly saline–alkaline ecosystem. The stratigraphic record indicates an exceptional and long‐term sedimentation of carbonate microbialites. Previous studies based on the 16S rRNA gene have shown that microbial communities have a widespread presence in the crater at the microbialites, the remaining saline ponds, superficial soils and below the surface. To understand the possible role of the microbial communities that generate these biogeological structures, novel analytical methods to resolve the amplicon datasets and their microbial metabolic potential were used.We describe in detail the relationship between the microbial communities, the evolution of physicochemical parameters, and carbonate morphology, in four micro‐environments. A 16S rRNA gene sequencing dataset from previous publications was re‐analysed using an ASV‐based bioinformatic pipeline to identify new insights into the microbial assemblage. Finally, a taxon‐based metabolic profile was used to predict the potential metabolic contribution of the prokaryotic community.Results indicated a refinement in terms of community composition using the ASV‐based bioinformatic methods. Functional profiling through 16S rRNA gene‐based analysis suggested metabolisms associated with carbonate precipitation, indicating a broad potential for microbially mediated carbonate precipitation (e.g., carbon fixation and photosynthesis). The possibility of biogenic methane gas production by methanogenic microorganisms was recognised, supporting the estimated flow of methane on the surface soils.The lacustrine evolution over the last years and the extreme physicochemical characteristics of RP have an impact on the microbial community structure. Prokaryotic community and metabolic potential results from RP coincide with the diversity and abundance of microbial communities and functional metabolisms reported from other microbialite‐forming lakes along the Trans Mexican Volcanic Belt. The identification of important possible phylotypes involved in carbonate precipitation might be an important factor in considering RP microbialites as active calcifying entities.These findings provide novel insights into the potential key role of metabolic pathways driving the process of carbonate precipitation inside RP and evidence of its importance as a microbial biodiversity hotspot in Mexico. A modeling analysis is used to investigate the relative susceptibility of various hydrogeologic configurations to aseismic rupture generation due to deformation of aquifer systems accompanying groundwater pumping. An advanced numerical model (GEPS3D) is used to simulate rupture generation and propagation for three typical processes: (i) reactivation of a preexisting fault, (ii) differential compaction due to variations in thickness of aquifer/aquitard layers constituting the aquifer system, and (iii) tensile fracturing above a bedrock ridge that forms the base of the aquifer system. A sensitivity analysis is developed to address the relative importance of various factors, including aquifer depletion, aquifer thickness, the possible uneven distribution and depth below land surface of the aquifer/aquitard layers susceptible to aquifer‐system compaction, and the height of bedrock ridges beneath the aquifer system which contributes to thinning of the aquifer system. The rupture evolution is classified in two occurrences. In one, the rupture develops at either the top of the aquifer or at land surface and does not propagate. In the other, the developed rupture propagates from the aquifer top toward the land surface and/or from the land surface downward. The aquifer depth is the most important factor controlling rupture evolution. Specifically, the probability of a significant rupture propagation is higher when the aquifer top is near land surface. The numerical results are processed by a statistical regression analysis to provide a general methodology for a preliminary evaluation of possible ruptures development in exploited aquifer systems susceptible to compaction and accompanying land subsidence. A comparison with a few representative case studies in Arizona, USA, China, and Mexico supports the study outcomes. The article presents a research report conducted on the earth fault activation and fissure generation because of subsurface fluid exploitation through its mechanism, modelling and monitoring. It states on the understanding of the land subsidence, geomechanical mechanisms and ground ruptures that impacts the development of urban settlements. The fissure and faults are the results of agricultural and economic activities.

Rincon de Parangueo is a maar where a perennial lake was present until the 1980s. A conspicuous feature of the lake's sediments is the presence of bioherms and organo-sedimentary deposits produced by microbial communities. The gradual lake desiccation during the last 40 years has produced dramatic environmental changes inside the maar basin, which resulted in the formation of a highly saline-alkaline system with extant microorganisms. In this paper we succinctly describe the geologic setting where the microbial communities have developed inside of the maar crater and the results obtained from high-throughput sequencing methods to characterize the microbial component (Bacteria, Eukarya and Archaea) in endolithic mats of calcareous sediments, and microbial mats and free-living microorganisms in the soda ponds. The studied sites displayed different microbial communities with a diverse number of phylotypes belonging to Bacteria and Eukarya, contrasting with a much less diverse component in Archaea. The sequences here detected were related to environmental sequences from sites with extreme life conditions such as high alkalinity (alkaliphiles), high salinity (halophiles) and high temperature (thermophiles). Moreover, our results indicate an important unexplored endemic microbial biodiversity in the vestiges of the former lake that need to be studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the main hydromechanical characteristics of a portion of the Oriente fault, in the valley of Aguascalientes, Mexico, are analyzed and discussed. This discontinuity corresponds to a normal fault that was originated before the formation of the Aguascalientes graben. However, its recent activity and potential reactivation may be directly linked to the land subsidence currently occurring in the center of the valley. A 1-year campaign to monitor deformation in two transects perpendicular to this fault indicates continuous deformation activity with maximum vertical descending values of 43 mm in the hanging wall. On the other hand, a fieldwork procedure to determine the geologic structure of the fault zone and to establish the infiltration patterns of a selected point in the fault was performed as well. This field test consisted of analyzing the resistivity patterns of profiles across and along the fault, implemented before, during and after pouring groundwater into the fault and monitoring the fluids movement through the fault zone. Results suggest that the fault contains three perpendicular fault branches in a distance of 80 m, portraying a potential domino fault system. The high infiltration capacity of the fault opening allowed the rapid intrusion of water into the subsoil, and the distinguishable changes in electrical resistivity in the profiles parallel to the fault plane suggest that the infiltrating water goes down into the soil through the fault plane or adjacent to it. We present evidence of five late Holocene earthquake ruptures observed at two paleoseismological trenches in the Laguna Bañí sag pond (Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, central Mexico). The trenches exposed two fault branches of the western termination of the Pastores fault, one of the major fault systems within the central Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The site was studied by combining geomorphological and structural approaches, volcanic mapping, ground-penetrating radar, and paleoseismological analysis. The study revealed that coseismic surface rupture was noncharacteristic, and that the exposed fault branches had not always moved simultaneously. The fault tip has ruptured at least 5 times within the past 4 k.y., and the rupture events followed and preceded the deposition of an ignimbrite. The close temporal relationship of the seismic rupture with the volcanic activity of the area could be the result of volcanism triggered by faulting and its associated seismicity. The relatively high recurrence of seismic events (1.1-2.6 k.y.) and the noncharacteristic fault behavior observed at this tip of the Pastores fault suggest that the fault might have been active as a primary fault rupturing along segments of variable length or depth, and/or that the fault ruptured eventually as a secondary fault. The secondary ruptures would likely be related to earthquakes produced at major neighboring faults such as the Acambay fault, which moved during the 1912 Acambay earthquake, or the Venta de Bravo fault. A relatively large slip rate estimated for this fault branch (0.23-0.37 mm/yr) leads us to contemplate the possible connection at depth between the Pastores and the Venta de Bravo faults, increasing the maximum expected magnitude for central Mexico.
