Abstract Conservation decisions for bird diversity in the Afrotropics are often based on ecological studies utilizing diurnal bird species likely owing to difficulties associated with sampling nocturnal birds. It is therefore important to compare the sampling effectiveness of some of the available techniques that can be used in nocturnal bird surveys to guide future long‐term survey efforts. Thus, we compared the sampling effectiveness of point count, acoustic recorder and camera trap for estimating nocturnal bird species richness and also across habitat types. We surveyed 20 points that were spaced at least 500 m apart in November and December 2021 in the Amurum Forest Reserve and its surroundings in Jos‐Nigeria. At each point, we used two camera traps, one at the ground and the other at 2.0 m. We also used one acoustic recorder as well as a 15‐min point count during each survey at each point. We encountered 11 nocturnal bird species, primarily nightjars but also owls. While we did not encounter any species with the camera traps, all 11 species were recorded using the acoustic recorder. All species except for Ketupa lacteaus were recorded in point count. Eight species were recorded in the gallery, seven in rocky and nine in savannah. Species richness and estimation using the acoustic recorder and point count were similar across habitat types. We conclude that either point count or acoustic recorders are useful for nocturnal bird surveys in Afrotropical environments. However, the choice of methods should be based on the research questions as some questions may be better answered by a specific method or even a combination of both.

Abstract Citizen science projects are expanding globally, with the African continent, particularly Nigeria, registering significant growth. Here, we document and analyse novel operations of the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project (NIBAP), 2015–2022. This project has employed the use of ornithologists, mainly trained at the A. P. Leventis Ornithological Research Institute (APLORI) located in Jos, Nigeria, and its 28 bird clubs established across Nigeria to enlist 827 bird enthusiasts that contribute regular and near real‐time data about bird distribution and relative abundance in the country. Interestingly, NiBAP has recorded about 75% of the bird species known from Nigeria in only about 50% of Nigeria's total surface area, including 39 nationally threatened species. The Common Bulbul Pycnonotus barbatus, Laughing Dove Spilopelia senegalensis, and Grey‐backed Camaroptera Camaroptera brevicaudata were the most commonly recorded species, while Amurum Forest Reserve, Rennajj Fish Farm, and Obudu Cattle Ranch were the most surveyed sites during the period. Thus, our approach reveals how to increase involvement of nature enthusiasts, ornithologists, and a regional research institute to build local capacity and contribute rich information necessary to alleviate the lack of distributional data about Afrotropical avifauna. We strongly recommend our approach to boost other citizen science projects across Africa and beyond to address the huge lack of biodiversity data, create public awareness, and foster conservation education.

Abstract Animal tolerance towards humans can be a key factor facilitating wildlife–human coexistence, yet traits predicting its direction and magnitude across tropical animals are poorly known. Using 10,249 observations for 842 bird species inhabiting open tropical ecosystems in Africa, South America, and Australia, we find that avian tolerance towards humans was lower (i.e., escape distance was longer) in rural rather than urban populations and in populations exposed to lower human disturbance (measured as human footprint index). In addition, larger species and species with larger clutches and enhanced flight ability are less tolerant to human approaches and escape distances increase when birds were approached during the wet season compared to the dry season and from longer starting distances. Identification of key factors affecting animal tolerance towards humans across large spatial and taxonomic scales may help us to better understand and predict the patterns of species distributions in the Anthropocene.

Selecting nest sites that provide access to resources and reduce predation risk is crucial to maximizing fitness in breeding birds. Therefore, understanding what habitat features influence nest site selection and nest success is a key component of avian conservation because it allows for identification and protection of habitat that will promote population growth. We examined drivers of nest success in Gosling's Bunting (Emberiza goslingi) by evaluating variables that influence nest site choice and nest survival at 23 nests and an equal number of random, paired, non-nesting locations in a tropical savannah landscape in north-central Nigeria. Gosling's Buntings exhibited a nonrandom nest-placement pattern. Nests were either on or in proximity to large rock surfaces with nesting probability increasing when the immediate nesting area (100 m radius around the nest) consisted of 30-60% bare rock. Compared to random non-nesting sites, buntings selected areas that were low in litter cover and/or had short grass height. Daily nest survival probability was high (0.96) and was positively associated with the proportion of bare rock around the nest but negatively with the amount of litter cover. Although hatching success was 56.9%, only 30% of all nesting attempts successfully fledged a chick suggesting that nest failure occurred mostly at advanced stages of nesting (nestling phase) when renesting is less likely. Nest survival was higher at low concealment, but only significantly higher than nest failure within a restricted concealment range of 45-54%. Our findings show that microhabitat features could benefit reproduction and daily nest survival. Furthermore, by linking nest-site attributes with fitness indices, we highlight the potential importance of fitness measures as a key component of habitat quality assessment for these buntings in tropical savannahs. Examinamos los procesos que conducen el exito de los nidos del escribano Emberiza goslingi evaluando las variables que influencian la eleccion de sitios de anidacion y la sobrevivencia de nidos en 23 nidos asi como a igual numero de localidades aleatorias pareadas dc no-anidacion en un paisaje de sabana tropical en Nigeria norcentral. Estos escribanos mostraron un patron no-aleatorio de ubicacion de nidos. Los nidos estuvieron sobre o cercanos a la superficie de grandes rocas con una probabilidad de anidacion que sc incremento cuando el area inmediata alrededor del nido (100 m alrededor de este) consistia en 30-60% de roca dcsnuda. Comparados con sitios aleatorios de no-anidacion, los escribanos seleccionaron areas que tenian baja cobertura dc hojarasca y/o tenian baja altura de pastos. La probabilidad de sobrevivencia diaria fue elevada (0.96) y estaba positivamente asociada con la proportion de roca dcsnuda alrededor del nido aunque negativamente con la cantidad de hojarasca. Aunque el exito de cclosion fue de 56.9%, solamente 30% de todos los intentos de anidacion emanciparon polluelos, lo que sugiere que el fallo de los nidos ocurrio en su mayoria en etapas avanzadas de la anidacion (en la fase de crianza), cuando la reanidacion es menos probable. Till date, there is no baseline study on the genus Euplectes in Northern Nigeria thus, an attempt to investigate the habitat preference of the genus was carried out in Amurum Forest Reserve and the nonprotected habitats of Fobur. Line transects of 200m were randomly laid across the study sites. The abundance of Bishop species was highest in farmland compared to grassland and rocky outcrop. Therefore, the number of the species was significantly different between habitats (F2, 573 = 5.454, P = 0.0015). There was a significant relationship between flock size and number of seeds across habitat types. Number of individual birds increased with increase in seed number (F1, 57 = 21687.786, P < 0.001). With the exception of grass height, there was a highly significant difference in relation to vegetation variables taken between plots where Bishop species were sighted and the random points where they were not seen (P < 0.001). The finding suggests that farmlands should be integrated into conservation plan in the nonprotected area based on the high population of the genus recorded.

This research surveyed some socio-economic activities of communities around Pandam Game Reserve (PGR) central Nigeria to determine their implications for biodiversity Conservation in PGR. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and field observations. Results showed a 100% response to questionnaires administered. Eighty three percent (83%) of the respondents were males while 17% were females. Eighty percent (80%) attended at least primary school level of education while 20% had no form of formal education. Prominent among occupation of respondents was farming with 40% and the occupation of respondents with list response was hunting with 1%. Field observations showed the presence of the following human activities: logging, firewood collection, fishing, farm encroachment, cattle grazing and poaching. The implication of these socio-economic activities in PGR if left uncontrolled could result to biodiversity lost. A multi-stakeholder approach and participatory management of the reserve which will consider the socio-economic concerns of locals have been suggested as a critical component for building cooperation. Occasional screening of food and water quality available to organisms in protected areas could be beneficial to their successful conservation. This is important for areas receiving regular human visitors and exhibiting activities that may be detrimental to ecosystem health. This study determined the intestinal protozoan species harboured by insectivorous and granivorous birds within the Jos Wildlife Park, Nigeria and whether the two avian feeding guilds are more susceptible to protozoan infection through water or food (grass seeds and insects). Special boxes were used to collect faecal samples from trapped birds. Samples were later analysed in the laboratory for protozoans. Both food and water utilised by the birds in the area were microscopically screened. The composition and abundance of intestinal protozoans between the two feeding guilds did not show significant differences. However, considering parasite species individually, the degree of infection by protozoans such asGiardia lambliawas highly related to the range of infection sources that a feeding guild was exposed to. The composition of parasites observed in the two feeding guilds was strongly linked to both water bodies and avian diet obtainable in the Park. These observations showed that birds in the Park are orally susceptible to infection with protozoans, some of which have been reported to cause health implications in birds. Thus, any measure to curtail environmental contamination by the parasites may improve ecosystem health and survival of avian species in the Park. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abundance and diversity of ground-dwelling insect of Amurum Forest Reserve and surrounding farmlands (subdivided into organic and inorganic farmlands) was studied using the pitfall trap method during the on-set of the rainy season of 2005. The organic farmland is made up of waste products from animal husbandry, plant decomposition or products from waste treatment for improvement of soil condition; whereas inorganic farmlands uses inorganic or mineralize fertilizers that are synthetically produced organic compounds to improve soil condition. A total of 29, 217 individuals representing 19 orders, 55 families and 70 species, were collected. Hymenoptera and Coleoptera were the most species - rich orders with Formicidae and Scarabaeidae contributing the most to this richness. Of the three sites sampled, Amurum Forest Reserve and organic farmland had the most diverse and abundant insect species respectively. Some of the species sampled are potentially harmful as agricultural pests whereas others are likely beneficial as agents of biological control. Detailed investigation of the foraging site utilised by avian species may reveal the habitat factors important in their conservation. This study compared the foraging sites of the Sunlark, Galerida modesta and Familiar Chart, Cercomela familiaris (both African resident insectivorous birds) a week after fire engulfed about one third of the 300 ha of the Amurum Forest Reserve, Nigeria. Foraging sites were compared based on proxies of food availability (ant, grasshopper and other insect abundance) and vegetation structure. Data on food availability and vegetation structures were obtained by quadrate sampling while foraging spots were determined from four stratified transects each surveyed four times during the study. Food availability was not a significant predictor of foraging site characteristics between the two bird species. However of the nine vegetation variables measured, grass height and proportion of burned grass cover per foraging site significantly distinguished the foraging sites of the two bird species; Sunlark foraged more at sites with shorter grasses and high proportion of burned grass cover as compared to the Familiar Chat. The characteristics of the foraging sites observed might have implications on the foraging success of the birds in line with literature on the Influences of vegetation structure on avian foraging behaviour.
