Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) are an important strategy for innovation in schools, and they are receiving considerable attention from scholars and educators alike. The present study aimed to examine the effect of PLCs on schools' effectiveness and to investigate the social, organizational, and structural factors that can promote these learning communities. The survey for this study was completed by 375 teachers from 40 elementary schools in the Seoul Metropolitan Area of South Korea, and their responses were analyzed to test the hypothesized model. The results of the structural equation modeling indicated that PLCs were strongly and directly related to elementary schools' effectiveness and that principals' leadership and supportive relationships among teachers were the important factors that influenced PLCs. Based on the results of this study, several implications are discussed.

This study explores how teachers implemented an assessment reform in South Korea, with an analysis of different aspects of the reform. Using a mixed method design, this study reveals that the relation between policy and practice depends upon the nature of the changes that reform policies propose. Teachers' implementation varies in terms of different aspects of the reform. Teachers struggle with implementing its fundamental aspects. This study suggests that it is important to take into account variation in implementation as the developmental progress of the reform and attend to scaffolding to make teachers further progress toward fundamental changes in practice.

Vepdegestrant (formerly ARV-471), a novel proteolysis-targeting chimera (PROTAC), targets estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) for degradation, offering a promising option to treat advanced ER-positive breast cancer. We developed and validated a sensitive and rapid liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method to quantify vepdegestrant in rodent plasma using bavdegalutamide (formerly ARV-110) as an internal standard. Plasma samples were prepared with protein precipitation using acetonitrile and analyzed using reverse-phase C18 columns and a mobile phase of 10 mM ammonium formate in distilled water and acetonitrile. The method demonstrated linearity from 1 to 1000 ng/mL in mouse and rat plasma, meeting all validation criteria, and successfully applied to in vivo and in vitro studies. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed low-to-moderate clearance (313.3, 1053 mL/h/kg) and oral bioavailability (17.91, 24.12%) of vepdegestrant in mice and rats, respectively. It was unstable in buffer solutions across pH 2–10 and in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4), likely due to adsorption, but remained stable in mouse and rat plasma at varying temperatures. In liver microsomes, vepdegestrant exhibited moderate stability in rats but was stable in mice, dogs, and humans. These findings enhance the understanding of pharmacokinetic properties of vepdegestrant supporting further development of PROTAC drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 7‐year‐old castrated male Golden Retriever weighing 36.8 kg presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with vomiting, anorexia and depression. After blood tests, radiographic, ultrasound and computed tomography examinations, a 7.85 × 5.90 × 8.75 cm mass was identified in the caecum. To visualise the tumour margin and improve the accuracy of tumour resection, intraoperative short‐wave infrared imaging using indocyanine green was performed during surgery. An indocyanine green solution was injected intravenously as a bolus of 5 mg/kg 24 h before surgery. Tumour resection was performed with a 0.5 cm margin from the fluorescent‐marked tissues. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of a gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) and the absence of neoplastic cells in the surgical margin, indicating a successful surgery. The global tourism industry has been significantly affected by the COVID‐19 pandemic, underscoring the importance of innovative crisis management. Traditional crisis management approaches based on the generalized assumption of linearity fail to account for the complex and chaotic nature of tourism crises and systems. Chaos theory, well‐known for its ability to manage unpredictable events and facilitate the emergence of new orders, provides a useful framework for tourism crisis management. Thus, this study aims to investigate the application of chaos theory principles to crisis management during the COVID‐19 pandemic in South Korea. This study provides a synthesis of theoretical perspectives and practical examples with significant implications for tourism crisis management, emphasizing the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and collaboration. Overall, this study contributes to the theoretical discourse on tourism crisis management and provides practical guidance for industry stakeholders to navigate potential future crises effectively. Environmentally friendly crosslinked polymer networks feature degradable covalent or non‐covalent bonds, with many of them manifesting dynamic characteristics. These attributes enable convenient degradation, facile reprocessibility, and self‐healing capabilities. However, the inherent instability of these crosslinking bonds often compromises the mechanical properties of polymer networks, limiting their practical applications. In this context, environmentally friendly dual‐crosslinking polymer networks (denoted EF‐DCPNs) have emerged as promising alternatives to address this challenge. These materials effectively balance the need for high mechanical properties with the ability to degrade, recycle, and/or self‐heal. Despite their promising potential, investigations into EF‐DCPNs remain in their nascent stages, and several gaps and limitations persist. This Review provides a comprehensive overview of the synthesis, properties, and applications of recent progress in EF‐DCPNs. Firstly, synthetic routes to a rich variety of EF‐DCPNs possessing two distinct types of dynamic bonds (i.e. imine, disulfide, ester, hydrogen bond, coordination bond, and other bonds) are introduced. Subsequently, complex structure‐ and dynamic nature‐dependent mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of EF‐DCPNs are discussed, followed by their exemplary applications in electronics and biotechnology. FAF1 (FAS-associated factor 1) is involved in the activation of Fas cell surface death receptors and plays a role in apoptosis and necrosis. In patients with Parkinson's disease, FAF1 is overexpressed in dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. KM-819, an FAF1 inhibitor, has shown potential for preventing dopaminergic neuronal cell death, promoting the degradation of α-synuclein and preventing its accumulation. This study aimed to develop and validate a quantitative analytical method for determining KM-819 levels in rat plasma using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. This method was then applied to pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats. The metabolic stability of KM-819 was assessed in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes. In vitro metabolite identification and metabolic pathways were investigated in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes. The structural analog of KM-819, namely N-[1-(4-bromobenzyl)-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl]-2-(phenylsulfanyl) acetamide, served as the internal standard (IS). Proteins were precipitated from plasma samples using acetonitrile. Analysis was carried out using a reverse-phase C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of 0.1% formic acid in distilled water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The analytical method developed for KM-819 exhibited linearity within the concentration range of 0.002–10 μg/mL in rat plasma. The precision and accuracy of the intra- and inter-day measurements were <15% for the lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) and all quality control samples. KM-819 demonstrated stability under various sample storage conditions (6 h at room temperature (25 °C), four weeks at −20 °C, three freeze-thaw cycles, and pretreated samples in the autosampler). The matrix effect and dilution integrity met the criteria set by the Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency. This sensitive, rapid, and reliable analytical method was successfully applied in pharmacokinetic studies in rats. Pharmacokinetic analysis revealed the dose-independent kinetics of KM-819 at 0.5–5 mg/kg, with a moderate oral bioavailability of ~20% in rats. The metabolic stability of KM-819 was also found to be moderate in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes. Metabolite identification in rat, dog, and human hepatocytes resulted in the discovery of six, six, and eight metabolites, respectively. Glucuronidation and mono-oxidation have been proposed as the major metabolic pathways. This study investigated the changes in the ganglion cell complex (GCC) of patients with acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) following focal laser photocoagulation (FLP) and sought to determine its correlation with visual acuity (VA). Our retrospective study was conducted on 30 patients diagnosed with acute CSC between January 2015 and April 2022, who underwent FLP within 3 months of symptom onset. The study assessed GCC changes by measuring the thickness of its inner retinal layers—retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and inner plexiform layer (IPL) using optical coherence tomography (OCT). GCC thickness was compared between the affected and unaffected eyes and a healthy control group. VA was also assessed at baseline and at 1, 3, and 6 months post-treatment. VA showed significant improvement from 0.20 ± 0.14 at baseline to 0.10 ± 0.12 logMAR at 6 months post-treatment (p = 0.003). There was no significant change in GCC thickness over the 6-month period. No significant differences in GCC thickness were observed when comparing CSC eyes with fellow eyes or with normal controls at any time point. Final VA was significantly related only to baseline VA, with no correlation found with other factors, including RNFL, GCL, and IPL thickness. In summary, for patients with acute CSC undergoing FLP, our findings indicate that there is no significant change in GCC thickness detectable by OCT before and after the resolution of subretinal fluid (SRF), despite improvements in VA post-laser treatment. This suggests that any potential impact of FLP on GCC thickness may be minimal and not discernible with the current measurement methods, such as OCT, emphasizing that VA improvements may be primarily associated with alterations in the outer retina rather than the inner retina. Ensuring the safety of autonomous vehicles is becoming increasingly important with ongoing technological advancements. In this paper, we suggest a machine learning-based approach for detecting and responding to various abnormal behaviors within the V2X system, a system that mirrors real-world road conditions. Our system, including the RSU, is designed to identify vehicles exhibiting abnormal driving. Abnormal driving can arise from various causes, such as communication delays, sensor errors, navigation system malfunctions, environmental challenges, and cybersecurity threats. We simulated exploring three primary scenarios of abnormal driving: sensor errors, overlapping vehicles, and counterflow driving. The applicability of machine learning algorithms for detecting these anomalies was evaluated. The Minisom algorithm, in particular, demonstrated high accuracy, recall, and precision in identifying sensor errors, vehicle overlaps, and counterflow situations. Notably, changes in the vehicle's direction and its characteristics proved to be significant indicators in the Basic Safety Messages (BSM). We propose adding a new element called linePosition to BSM Part 2, enhancing our ability to promptly detect and address vehicle abnormalities. This addition underpins the technical capabilities of RSU systems equipped with edge computing, enabling real-time analysis of vehicle data and appropriate responsive measures. In this paper, we emphasize the effectiveness of machine learning in identifying and responding to the abnormal behavior of autonomous vehicles, offering new ways to enhance vehicle safety and facilitate smoother road traffic flow. Triangular mesh data structures are principal in computer graphics, serving as the foundation for many 3D models. To effectively utilize these 3D models across diverse industries, it is important to understand the model's overall shape and geometric features thoroughly. In this work, we introduce a novel method for generating camera paths that emphasize the model's local geometric characteristics. This method uses a toroidal patch-based spatial data structure, approximating the mesh's faces within a predetermined tolerance ϵ , encapsulating their geometric intricacies. This facilitates the determination of the camera position and gaze path, ensuring the mesh's key characteristics are captured. During the path construction, we create a bounding cylinder for the mesh, project the mesh's faces and associated toroidal patches onto the cylinder's lateral surface, and sequentially select grids of the cylinder containing the highest number of toroidal patches as we traverse the lateral surface. The centers of the selected grids are used as control points for a periodic B-spline curve, which serves as our foundational path. After initial curve generation, we generated camera position and gaze path from the curve by multiplying factors to ensure a uniform camera amplitude. We applied our method to ten triangular mesh models, demonstrating its effectiveness and adaptability across various mesh configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ocular neuropathic pain (ONP) has various etiologies, and patients have various symptoms. The clinical management of patients with ONP has been debated. We aimed to evaluate the effect of repeated greater occipital nerve block (GONB) on ONP based on convergence in the trigeminocervical complex. In this single-center retrospective study, the medical records of 204 patients who were referred to the pain clinic by the ophthalmology department of our hospital and subsequently underwent repeated GONB for chronic ONP between January 2008 and February 2022 were analyzed. They received GONB every two weeks, up to 10 times. Symptoms of ONP were divided into five categories: eye pain, dysesthesias/allodynia, non-eye pain, visual disturbance, and tearing. The primary outcome of this study was the pain relief scale (PRS) score after repeated injections. The differences and magnitude of decrease in the overall pain relief scale score were statistically significant (estimate = −0.55, p < 0.001). There were two patients who had recurrence of ONP and seven patients who had adverse events. According to our study, repeated GONB can reduce symptom severity in patients with ONP. Therefore, it appears that GONB can be considered a multimodal management method for ONP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mastery of literacy skills in the language(s) of the host country is considered a key element for the successful integration of immigrants. The current paper focuses on possibly one of the most challenging aspects of the issues of linguistic integration of immigrants, i.e., literacy acquisition by "low-literate" adult immigrants in a "multilingual" environment such as Luxembourg. It documents Luxembourg's current state of literacy education policies and practices with regard to low-literate adult L2 learners. Also, it contains a participatory observation on a French literacy course in Luxembourg in order to look into the actual implementation and effectiveness of such courses in more detail. In doing so, we look into the relevant policies and practices of two other multilingual countries, i.e., Canada and Belgium, in order to situate the present practices of Luxembourg within larger contexts and provide insights into how to promote better policy and education options for low-literate adult immigrants in Luxembourg.

To synthesize nanocomposites (NCs) comprising two different materials, a multi-step synthetic method is generally required. In this work, we report the synthesis of a heterometallic nanostructure that can be synthesized using a simple antisolvent crystallization-based method. Cu/CoO NCs composed of Cu nanoparticles and CoO nanosheets were formed by reducing mixed salt particles containing both Cu and Co precursors. The synthesized Cu/CoO NCs exhibit higher sensitivity and increased stability compared to conventional catalysts when used for the electrochemical detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). This paper presents the results of the azimuthal and axial wave diagnostics of a partially magnetized E × B Penning source. Various probes were employed, namely, a two-tip probe for azimuthal waves and two- and four-probe arrays for axial waves, to investigate the spatial characteristics of the instability using a two-point probe technique. The azimuthally aligned tips of the two-tip probe facilitated the investigation of the evolution of the azimuthal dispersion relation, which exhibited a well-known azimuthally propagative spoke at low discharge voltages. By utilizing axially aligned four-probe arrays with a probe distance of 3 mm and two-probe arrays with a relatively long probe distance of 20 mm, we sought to determine whether the rotating spoke propagated in the axial direction in the cylindrical E × B source. Our findings suggest that the rotating spoke originated near the axial center and propagated toward each cathode, rotating in a direction tilted from the azimuthal direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: Remifentanil is used for intraoperative pain control; however, it has several side effects, such as hypotension and opioid-induced hyperalgesia. We aimed to determine whether an intraoperative remifentanil infusion may increase postoperative opioid consumption in patients undergoing total knee arthroscopy (TKA) under femoral nerve block (FNB) in addition to general anesthesia. (2) Methods: We randomly assigned 66 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty to the remifentanil (R) and control (C) groups. All patients underwent FNB and popliteal artery and posterior capsule of the knee (iPACK) block in addition to sevoflurane-based general anesthesia. Postoperative pain control was achieved using intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) fentanyl. We recorded IV-PCA fentanyl consumption at various postoperative timepoints, numerical rating scale (NRS) scores, intraoperative changes in vital signs and index of nociception (qNOX), ephedrine consumption, postoperative side effects, satisfaction, and sleep quality. (3) Results: The primary outcome (the cumulative IV-PCA fentanyl usage within 48 h postoperatively) was significantly lower in the C group (541.1 ± 294.5 µg) than in the R group (717.5 ± 224.0 µg) (p < 0.001). The secondary outcome (the cumulative IV-PCA fentanyl usage within 12, 24, and 72 h) was lower in the C group than in the R group and the mean arterial pressure was lower in the R group than in the C group from immediately after tourniquet on to immediately after tourniquet off. The heart rate was lower in the R group from immediately after incision to immediately after irrigation. There was no significant between-group difference in the perioperative qNOX and NRS scores at rest and activity except for NRS scores at 72 h postoperatively. Ephedrine use was higher in the R group than in the C group (p = 0.003). There was no significant between-group difference in the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting, nor in the postoperative satisfaction and sleep quality. Objectives: The trefoil factor family (TFF) is composed of three thermostable, and protease-resistant proteins, named TFF1, TFF2 and TFF3, and plays a role in gastrointestinal mucosal defence and repair. Recently, TFFs have been found to be related to the development of various types of cancer. This study assessed the relationship between the expression of TFF1 and TFF3 and the clinicopathological parameters in gastric carcinoma (GC). Materials and Methods: The expression of TFF1 and TFF3 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry in 292 GCs and 20 normal gastric tissues. Results: All normal gastric tissues expressed TFF1, but 53.8% of GCs showed reduced TFF1 expression. However, TFF3 was not detected in normal gastric tissues and 44.2% of GCs showed a high level of expression. Highly expressed TFF3 was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis, lymphatic invasion, vein invasion, and advanced stage. The overall survival was shorter in patients with high expression of TFF3 than in those with low expression of TFF3 in 292 GCs and in 125 early GCs (EGCs). Moreover, in patients with EGCs, high expression of TFF3, associated with reduced expression of TFF1, was determined as an independent poor prognostic marker. Conclusions: Reduced expression of TFF1 and increased expression of TFF3 may play a role in the carcinogenesis of gastric cancer. Furthermore, high expression of TFF3 with reduced expression of TFF1 may be a marker of poor prognosis for patients with EGC.

Summary: There have been numerous attempts over the decades to introduce closed‐loop feedback to induce sleep oscillations. Recently, our group also introduced closed‐loop acoustic feedback to the sleep spindle and reported improved procedural memory consolidation during a nap with spindle‐targeted pink noise stimulation. In this study, we replicated our previous work with a control condition in an attempt to investigate the effect of closed‐loop feedback on procedural memory. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in the subjects' procedural learning and reduced wake time during the nap with closed‐loop acoustic stimulation compared with the control condition. Further, we found that randomized acoustic stimuli lead to more frequent spindle activity and a faster decrement in slow oscillation power compared with the sham condition. There were strong correlations between slow oscillation and measures related to sleep efficiency as well. Interestingly, we found a marginal enhancement in procedural learning during the nap with the closed‐loop acoustic stimulation compared with the sham nap. We also found a marginal decrement in theta power during the nap with closed‐loop feedback compared with the sham nap, and a negative correlation between slow oscillation and theta power. We speculate that the marginal improvement in procedural learning may be related to closed‐loop acoustic feedback's stabilization of non‐rapid eye movement sleep. Taken together, this study shows that the closed‐loop feedback method has the potential to stabilize sleep and improve procedural memory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
