Abstract The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) serves as a one of the fundamental contributors to emergence of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE). Despite intense interest due to its potential for new technologies reaching beyond the quantum efficiency limit, the interplay between BCD and NLHE has been barely understood yet in the absence of a systematic study on the electronic band structure. Here, we report NLHE realized in NbIrTe4 that persists above room temperature coupled with a sign change in the Hall conductivity at 150 K. First-principles calculations combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that BCD tuned by the partial occupancy of spin-orbit split bands via temperature is responsible for the temperature-dependent NLHE. Our findings highlight the correlation between BCD and the electronic band structure, providing a viable route to create and engineer the non-trivial Hall effect by tuning the geometric properties of quasiparticles in transition-metal chalcogen compounds.

Abstract Tunability of interfacial effects between two-dimensional (2D) crystals is crucial not only for understanding the intrinsic properties of each system, but also for designing electronic devices based on ultra-thin heterostructures. A prerequisite of such heterostructure engineering is the availability of 2D crystals with different degrees of interfacial interactions. In this work, we report a controlled epitaxial growth of monolayer TaSe2 with different structural phases, 1H and 1 T, on a bilayer graphene (BLG) substrate using molecular beam epitaxy, and its impact on the electronic properties of the heterostructures using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. 1H-TaSe2 exhibits significant charge transfer and band hybridization at the interface, whereas 1 T-TaSe2 shows weak interactions with the substrate. The distinct interfacial interactions are attributed to the dual effects from the differences of the work functions as well as the relative interlayer distance between TaSe2 films and BLG substrate. The method demonstrated here provides a viable route towards interface engineering in a variety of transition-metal dichalcogenides that can be applied to future nano-devices with designed electronic properties.

Abstract The thermoelectric performance of SnSe strongly depends on its low-energy electron band structure that provides high density of states in a narrow energy window due to the multi-valley valence band maximum (VBM). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, in conjunction with first-principles calculations, reveal that the binding energy of the VBM of SnSe is tuned by the population of Sn vacancy, which is determined by the cooling rate during the sample growth. The VBM shift follows precisely the behavior of the thermoelectric power factor, while the effective mass is barely modified upon changing the population of Sn vacancies. These findings indicate that the low-energy electron band structure is closely correlated with the high thermoelectric performance of hole-doped SnSe, providing a viable route toward engineering the intrinsic defect-induced thermoelectric performance via the sample growth condition without an additional ex-situ process. Signatures of an excitonic insulator have been reported in several two-dimensional materials. Here the authors report electronic properties of monolayer ZrTe2 from ARPES and STM measurements that are consistent with the preformed exciton gas phase, a precursor for the excitonic insulator.

Abstract The interface between two‐dimensional (2D) crystals often forms a Moiré superstructure that imposes a new periodicity, which is a key element in realizing complex electronic phases as evidenced in twisted bilayer graphene. Acombined angle‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first‐principles calculations reveal the formation of a Moiré superstructure between a 2D Dirac semi‐metallic crystal, graphene, and a 2D insulating crystal of noble gas, xenon. Incommensurate diffraction pattern and folded Dirac cones around the Brillouin zone center imply the formation of hexagonal crystalline array of xenon atoms. The velocity of Dirac fermions increases upon the formation of the 2D xenon crystal on top of graphene due to the enhanced dielectric screening by the xenon over‐layer. These findings not only provide a novel method to produce a Moiré superstructure from the adsorption of noble gas on 2D materials, but also to control the physical properties of graphene by the formation of a graphene‐noble gas interface.

The interplay between reduced dimensionality and interactions in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides has been of great research interest. Here the authors report an insulating dimer ground state in 1T-IrTe2, driven by the combined effect of the charge density wave instability and local atomic bond formation.

The nature of defects in transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors is still under debate. Here, the authors determine the atomic structure and electronic properties of chalcogen-site point defects common to monolayer MoSe2 and WS2, and find that these are substitutional defects, where a chalcogen atom is substituted by an oxygen atom, rather than vacancies.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) in the 1T′ structural phase have drawn a great deal of attention due to the prediction of quantum spin Hall insulator states. The band inversion and the concomitant changes in the band topology induced by the structural distortion from 1T to 1T′ phases are well established. However, the bandgap opening due to the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is only verified for 1T′-WTe2 recently and still debated for other TMDCs. Here we report a successful growth of high-quality monolayer 1T′-MoTe2 on a bilayer graphene substrate through molecular beam epitaxy. Using in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we have investigated the low-energy electronic structure and Fermi surface topology. The SOC-induced breaking of the band degeneracy points between the valence and conduction bands is clearly observed by ARPES. However, the strength of SOC is found to be insufficient to open a bandgap, which makes monolayer 1T′-MoTe2 on bilayer graphene a semimetal.

We have investigated electron band structure of epitaxially grown graphene on an SiC(0001) substrate using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In single-layer graphene, abnormal high spectral intensity is observed at the Dirac energy whose origin has been questioned between in-gap states induced by the buffer layer and plasmaron bands induced by electron–plasmon interactions. With the formation of double-layer graphene, the Dirac energy does not show the high spectral intensity any longer different from the single-layer case. The inconsistency between the two systems suggests that the main ingredient of the high spectral intensity at the Dirac energy of single-layer graphene is the electronic states originating from the coupling of the graphene π bands to the localized π states of the buffer layer, consistent with the theoretical prediction on the presence of in-gap states.

We have investigated the electron band structure of graphene epitaxially grown on an SiC substrate using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The conical energy spectrum of graphene exhibits a minimum slope at ~50 K, which is accompanied by the minimum separation between its two branches. These observations provide a viable route towards the engineering of the electronic properties of graphene using temperature, while the latter suggests a possible evidence of gap engineering via strain induced by the substrate and modulated by temperature. We present a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study in conjunction with firstprinciples calculations to investigate how the interaction of electrons with phonons in graphene is modified by the presence of Yb. We find that the charges transferred from Yb to the graphene layer hybridize with the graphene n bands, leading to a strong enhancement of the electron-phonon interaction. Specifically, the electron-phonon coupling constant is increased by as much as a factor of 10 upon the introduction of Yb with respect to as-grown graphene (⩽0.05). The observed coupling constant constitutes the highest value ever measured for graphene and suggests that the hybridization between graphene and the adatoms might be a critical parameter in realizing superconducting graphene. The Landau-Fermi liquid picture for quasiparticles assumes that charge carriers are dressed by many-body interactions, forming one of the fundamental theories of solids. Whether this picture still holds for a semimetal such as graphene at the neutrality point, i.e., when the chemical potential coincides with the Dirac point energy, is one of the long-standing puzzles in this field. Here we present such a study in quasi-freestanding graphene by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We see the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions go through substantial changes when the semimetallic regime is approached, including renormalizations due to strong electron-electron interactions with similarities to marginal Fermi liquid behavior. These findings set a new benchmark in our understanding of many-body physics in graphene and a variety of novel materials with Dirac fermions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past decade, the advent of time-resolved spectroscopic tools has provided a new ground to explore fundamental interactions in solids and to disentangle degrees of freedom whose coupling leads to broad structures in the frequency domain. Time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES) has been utilized to directly study the relaxation dynamics of a metal in the presence of electron-phonon coupling. The effect of photo-excitations on the real and imaginary part of the self-energy as well as the time scale associated with different recombination processes are discussed. In contrast with a theoretical model, the phonon energy does not set a clear scale governing quasiparticle dynamics, which is also different from the results observed in a superconducting material. These results point to the need for a more complete theoretical framework to understand electron-phonon interaction in a photo-excited state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the electronic characterization of single-layer 1H-TaSe2 grown by molecular beam epitaxy using a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. We demonstrate that 3 × 3 charge-density-wave (CDW) order persists despite distinct changes in the low energy electronic structure highlighted by the reduction in the number of bands crossing the Fermi energy and the corresponding modification of Fermi surface topology. Enhanced spin-orbit coupling and lattice distortion in the single-layer play a crucial role in the formation of CDW order. The electron band structure of graphene on SrTiO3 substrate has been investigated as a function of temperature. The high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission study reveals that the spectral width at Fermi energy and the Fermi velocity of graphene on SrTiO3 are comparable to those of graphene on a BN substrate. Near the charge neutrality, the energy-momentum dispersion of graphene exhibits a strong deviation from the well-known linearity, which is magnified as temperature decreases. Such modification resembles the characteristics of enhanced electron-electron interaction. Our results not only suggest that SrTiO3 can be a plausible candidate as a substrate material for applications in graphene-based electronics but also provide a possible route toward the realization of a new type of strongly correlated electron phases in the prototypical two-dimensional system via the manipulation of temperature and a proper choice of dielectric substrates.
