International audience; In this paper, we unveil the Software-Defined Low Latency (SDLL) framework based on Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to provision the Quality of Service (QoS) and guarantee ultra-low latency in 5G and beyond Transport Networks (TN). SDLL aims to tackle Time Sensitive Networking (TSN)’s weaknesses by providing agility and flexibility in terms of Traffic Engineering (TE) and Queue Management (QM) to guarantee low end-to-end (E2E) latency even under congested links. SDLL provides a flexible and on-demand way to change end-to-end paths and queue configurations (ex., add or remove queues). We conducted extensive experimentation by implementing SDLL using Open Network Operating System (ONOS) and Open vSwitch (OVS) tools and comparing its performances against two standard solutions: SDN Shortest Path (SDNSP) (one queue per port) and Software-Defined QoS (SDQoS) (three queues per port). Obtained results indicate that SDLL can guarantee low E2E latency compared to the two other solutions, particularly when: (1) the links are congested and (2) many low-latency critical services are run in parallel.

Coordinated vehicle control strategies aim at optimizing driving dynamics to increase traffic flow without impacting safety. These control strategies are based on the knowledge of the vehicles' state information like position and velocity obtained through Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. Literature on control strategies yet assumes perfect positions, whereas position errors are in fact present and non negligible (e.g. GPS). As a consequence, these localization errors impact the control strategies by introducing uncertainty, which must be accounted for to minimize the probability of accidents. This paper qualifies and quantifies such uncertainty and proposes strategies to reduce it in a collision avoidance scenario. We notably relate these strategies to their impacts on traffic flow. More specifically, we model coordinated automated vehicles as a Model Predictive Control (MPC), integrate localization errors and evaluate its impact of the output to avoid accident. We then propose possibilities to mitigate accident-prone controls and quantify them on traffic flow. Our study illustrates that localization errors impact traffic flow by forcing future automated vehicles to increase gaps or reduce speed.

Ontology-based applications are becoming more and more popular and are usually domain-specific (e.g., eHealth or domotic). Designing ontologies and semantic-based applications manually is tedious and cumbersome for non-technical expert or semantic web beginners. Internet of Things (IoT) is a new field aiming to connect the physical world surrounded by devices such as sensors to the web to automatically interact with them and build innovative applications. The main challenges are to automate as much as possible the tasks of: (1) reusing the background knowledge previously designed by domain experts, (2) facilitating the tasks of IoT developers willing to integrate semantic web technologies into their applications, and (3) designing interoperable semantic-based IoT applications. Stemming from Linked Open Data and Linked Open Vocabularies, we designed Linked Open Vocabularies for Internet of Things (LOV4IoT), a catalogue of ontologies/datasets/rules relevant for IoT available online. LOV4IoT has been extended with more domains and ontology-based projects, a semantic-based dataset and a bot to enhance automation, and web services. Moreover, we demonstrate several use cases of the LOV4IoT dataset: (1) building Semantic Web of Things applications, (2) extracting frequent terms used in existing ontologies, and (3) stakeholders who can exploit, reuse and combine domain ontologies. Finally, we evaluated this dataset with users who exploit this dataset for their own purposes.

Internet of Things (IoT) is becoming more and more popular. Increasingly, European projects (CityPulse, IoT.est, IoT-i and IERC), standard development organizations (ETSI M2M, oneM2M and W3C) and developers are involved in integrating Semantic Web technologies to Internet of Things. All of them design IoT application uses cases which are not necessarily interoperable with each other. The main innovative research challenge is providing a unified system to build interoperable semantic-based IoT applications. In this paper, to overcome this challenge, we design the Semantic Web of Things (SWoT) generator to assist IoT projects and developers in: (1) building interoperable Semantic Web of Things (SWoT) applications by providing interoperable semantic-based IoT application templates, (2) easily inferring high-level abstractions from sensor measurements thanks to the rules provided by the template, (3) designing domain-specific or inter-domain IoT applications thanks to the interoperable domain knowledge provided by the template, and (4) encouraging to reuse as much as possible the background knowledge already designed. We demonstrate the usefulness of our contribution though three use cases: (1) cloud-based IoT developers, (2) mobile application developers, and (3) assisting IoT projects. Introduction et but de l’etude Le butyrate joue un role important dans l’homeostasie de la barriere epitheliale colique (BEC) : c’est la source principale d’energie des cellules epitheliales du colon (CEC) mais aussi un regulateur epigenetique de l’expression des genes (acetylation des histones). Nous avons observe chez le rat que le retard de croissance intra-uterin (RCIU) induisait a l’âge adulte une perte d’utilisation du butyrate associee a une diminution de l’acetylation des histones et des alterations de la BEC. En outre, la BEC presentait un stress du reticulum endoplasmique (RE) et une augmentation des activites histones desacetylases (HDAC). L’objectif de notre etude etait de rechercher la relation entre la perte d’utilisation du butyrate, d’acetylation des histones et le stress du RE. Materiel et methodes Des approches ex vivo, in vitro et in vivo ont ete menees sur des rats de 6 semaines, des tissus coliques et des cellules epitheliales coliques HCT116. Les tissus et les cellules ont ete pre-incubes ou non avec du phenylbutyrate (inhibiteur du stress du RE), puis traites avec de la tunicamycine ou de la thapsigargine, deux inducteurs du stress RE. La permeabilite des tissus a ete mesuree en chambre de Ussing (flux de dextran-FITC, FD4). Suite a ces traitements, les colonocytes ont ete isoles pour le dosage des activites HDAC. L’acetylation de la lysine 16 de l’histone H4 (H4 K16) et l’expression de la proteine GRP78 (marqueur de stress du RE) ont ete evaluees par western blot et immuno-histo/cyto-fluorescence. L’expression d’ARNm a ete quantifiee par RT-qPCR. Des rats ont recu une perfusion caeco-colique d’a-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamate (CHC), un bloquant du transporteur du butyrate MCT1. La significativite des resultats a ete evaluee par le test de Mann–Whitney. Resultats La thapsigargine (2 μM) et la tunicamycine (6 μg/mL) augmentaient la permeabilite paracellulaire des tissus coliques au FD4 ainsi que les activites HDAC et entrainaient une perte d’acetylation d’H4K16. Le phenylbutyrate (10 mM) prevenait ces effets. In vivo, l’induction d’un stress du RE par la tunicamycine entrainait une perte d’acetylation d’H4K16 et une augmentation des activites HDAC. In vitro, le traitement des cellules HCT116 par la thapsigargine ou la tunicamycine, induisait un stress du RE (augmentation de l’expression de l’ARNm de XBP1 et de la proteine GRP78) et une perte d’acetylation d’H4K16 qui etait prevenue par un pre-traitement au phenylbutyrate. Le blocage du transporteur MCT1 par perfusion de CHC chez des rats induisait un stress du RE (augmentation de l’expression de l’ARNm de XBP1 et de GRP78). A contrario, l’induction d’un stress du RE par la tunicamycine ne modifiait pas l’expression de MCT1. Conclusion Nos resultats suggerent que le defaut d’utilisation du butyrate observe chez les rats IUGR induit non seulement une perte d’acetylation d’H4K16 mais egalement un stress du RE. Outre le deficit d’absorption du butyrate, le stress du RE accentuerait la perte d’acetylation et les alterations de la fonction barriere.

International audience; The paper advocates for applying Internet of Things (IoT) for personalized healthcare in smart homes. An IoT architecture is presented which enables such healthcare services. Continuous monitoring of physical parameters and processing of the medical data form the basis of smarter, connected and personalized healthcare. The core functionalities of the IoT architecture are exposed using RESTful web services to the consumers. The main contributions of the paper are: (i) providing a unified approach for discovery, management and interaction with physical devices, (ii) utilizing Machine-to-Machine Measurement (M3) framework to generate high level abstraction from wearable sensors, (iii) combining cross-domain sensor data using M3 and (iv) controlling home automation devices based on health sensor information. Prototype implementations and performance evaluations of the architecture components are discussed.

International audience; This paper describes Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications as the enablers of smart city initiatives. The challenges in modern cities are briefly identified. Utilization of IoT based applications and services could mitigate these challenges. The paper then introduces an architecture based on oneM2M standards for smart cities. The key elements of the architecture are described along with the common service functions. The main contributions of the work are – (i) uniform metadata exchange with things using Sensor Markup Language and its extensions, (ii) uniform description of heterogeneous things for configuration management, (iii) OMA Lightweight M2M based device management framework, (iv) resource discovery framework and (v) Machine-to-Machine Measurement framework based M2M data processing and analytics. The core functionalities of these frameworks are exposed to the consumers through RESTful web services. An application scenario on crowdsourcing in the smart cities is highlighted. Finally the paper concludes with future research directions.

Recent challenges in Internet of Things (IoT) include — (i) providing interoperability among IoT data, (ii) interpreting data generated by IoT devices, and (iii) assisting developers in accomplishing these tasks. Current standard development organizations such as oneM2M are designing semantic-based IoT architecture to address such challenges. However, the recent release of oneM2M standards does not provide any concrete tool for the semantic treatment of the IoT data. Previously, we proposed the Machine-to-Machine Measurement (M3) Framework which mitigates the challenges and assist developers in building semantic based IoT applications easily. Considering the usefulness and novel aspects of the M3 framework, the paper proposes to integrate it seamlessly into oneM2M architecture. The semantic requirements from oneM2M are pointed out and the M3 components addressing them are identified. A common service function (CSF) dedicated to semantic engine is introduced to the oneM2M architecture which extends the capabilities of common services entity (CSE) in terms of semantic treatment of IoT data. The new CSF also includes a catalog of semantic based IoT templates which are exploited by Application Entities to easily utilize the semantic engine. Two deployment scenarios of the upgraded oneM2M architecture have been discussed. Finally these extensions have been communicated to the oneM2M Management, Abstraction and Semantics (MAS) Group (Working Group 5).

International audience; This paper presents a user centric and crossdomain IoT application development framework for smart devices. The framework includes automatic discovery of M2M devices, provisioning of sensors and IoT domains, semantic reasoning on sensor data and actuation based on the suggestions. The framework integrates a lightweight version of the Machineto- Machine Measurement framework and has been adapted for smart devices enabling them to reason on sensor data. This allows us to build cross-domain IoT applications for end users. The issues of interoperability, heterogeneity of domains and multimodality of M2M devices are handled by the semantic web technologies. The framework is integrated into oneM2M architecture and its prototype implementation is also presented. The performance of the mobile application is evaluated in terms of CPU load and power consumption. Finally overall contributions and future directions are summarized.

Following on from the work of Foulkes (1964), we propose in this article to take up the concept of ‘group matrix’. We set out to provide new clinical–theoretical perspectives via the notion of group as ‘envelope’ elaborated by Anzieu (1975). This formulation will provide us with a canvas within which to apprehend the organizational and structural evolution of a therapeutic group for chronic psychotic patients. We will suggest models of the networks forming the matrix and the texture of the psychic envelope of the group. The aim is to bring out the peculiarities of the matrix in this type of group as well as its impact on the psychic positioning of the therapist and on his/her therapeutic work within the group.

International audience; Recent years have witnessed an explosion in the number and types of physical devices connected to the Internet. This exponential growth in the volume of objects poses challenges in terms of managing the connected M2M devices. A unified approach for efficient management of the M2M devices while preserving scalability is necessary. This paper proposes an M2M device management framework that can be deployed in a cloud system, M2M gateway or even inside a mobile application. CoRE Link Format is used for lightweight description of smart M2M devices. The capabilities of CoRE Link are extended to describe legacy M2M devices as a part of Internet of Things ecosystem. Open Mobile Alliance Lightweight M2M (OMA LwM2M) Technical Specifications are used in the framework to provide M2M service enablement for end users. Self-management of the M2M device configurations is outlined. The capabilities of the framework are exposed using RESTful web services. oneM2M architecture for device management is described which integrates the proposed framework. Its software implementation is examined to be ultra-lightweight. Utilization of CoRE Link settles the heterogeneity of the managed devices and promotes interoperability. Finally the paper summarizes the contributions and concludes with future directions.

International audience; This paper proposes a search engine based resource discovery framework for Internet of Things (IoT) to discover resources, their capabilities, properties and URIs to access them regardless of communication technology. There is a central registry to store configurations of resources and they are indexed. Based on discovery request parameters, the search engine “looks up” the indices and returns the URI(s) to directly access the resource(s). The functionalities of the proposed framework are exposed to the consumers using RESTful web services. The framework is generic enough to be deployed in cloud platforms, M2M gateways and lightweight mobile application running on smartphones.

International audience; Mobile applications running on smart devices are important enablers for Internet of Things (IoT). This paper presents a novel mobile application called “Connect and Control Things” (CCT) which integrates a lightweight IoT framework into smartphones and tablets. The framework is designed to discover & interact with things, reason with M2M data, provide configuration management facilities along with subscription and notification functionalities. The novel capabilities of CCT are: (i) lightweight search engine based dynamic discovery of physical things, (ii) interaction with both sensors and actuators using Sensor Markup Language (SenML) and its extensions, (iii) integrating a lightweight reasoning engine to infer high level abstraction, (iv) CoRE Link Format based configuration management and (v) support for both smart and legacy things regardless of communication technologies. An IoT architecture is presented along with a prototype implementation details for Android powered devices. Uses of the prototype mobile application in home automation scenarios are outlined. The performance of CCT is evaluated in terms of memory requirement, CPU usage and power consumption. Experimental results establish that the overall design and implementation of CCT are lightweight which encourages the adoption of CCT. It enables offering consumer centric services for home automation domain. Finally the paper concludes with future research directions.

International audience; Securing the Internet of Things, more precisely, the ETSI Machine to Machine (M2M) architecture is a difficult task, since there is a need to secure heterogeneous wireless communications (cellular, wireless, wired), devices (sensor or mobile phone) and applications (programming language, framework, database). In this article, we present the state of the art concerning the security ontologies in various domains (Web, MANET, 2G/GSM, 3G/UMTS, 4G/LTE, Wi-Fi, Intrusion Detection System). Since, most of the existing security ontologies are not published online or do not follow semantic web best practices, we have designed the STAC (Security Toolbox: Attack & Countermeasure) ontology-based security knowledge respecting the semantic web guidelines. The STAC ontology, dataset and application have been designed to help software developers or designers to choose security mechanisms fitting their needs to secure Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The Internet of Things, more specifically, the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) standard enables machines and devices such as sensors to communicate with each other without human intervention. The M2M devices provide a great deal of M2M data, mainly used for specific M2M applications such as weather forecasting, healthcare or building automation. Existing applications are domain-specific and use their own descriptions of devices and measurements. A major challenge is to combine M2M data provided by these heterogeneous domains and by different projects. It is really a difficult task to understand the meaning of the M2M data to later reason about them. We propose a semantic-based approach to automatically combine, enrich and reason about M2M data to provide promising cross-domain M2M applications. A proof-of-concept to validate our approach is published online (http://sensormeasurement.appspot.com/).

International audience; The emerging eld Machine-to-Machine (M2M) enables machines to communicate with each other without human intervention. Existing semantic sensor networks are domainspeci c and add semantics to the context. We design a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) architecture to merge heterogeneous sensor networks and we propose to add semantics to the measured data rather than to the context. This architecture enables to: (1) get sensor measurements, (2) enrich sensor measurements with semantic web technologies, domain ontologies and the Link Open Data, and (3) reason on these semantic measurements with semantic tools, machine learning algorithms and recommender systems to provide promising applications.

Natural disasters have often made the headlines in the past years. As a consequence, many actions have been started by the public authorities to reduce the damages and the number of casualties. In that objective, the French project RATCOM aims at developing an alert system in case of coastal tsunami. Its downstream components will propose reliable and efficient communication systems to relay the alert. In parallel to the integration of the existing technologies in the project demonstrator, a survey analysis has been performed to identify the communications technologies and networks which are in preparation but not yet operational, and which will increase the efficiency and quantity of individuals reachable by the future population alert networks. Each of these technologies is not sufficient by itself, but their combination will improve drastically the efficiency of the alerting global system.

The present article aims at tracing Moritz Schlick's theoretical route from 1915 to 1936 - the year he was assassinated. The authors describe this route as Schlick's attempt at successively evading what one could define as two flaws in modern philosophy - the Charybdis of Kantian epistemology and the Scylla of radical conventionalism. Such an original and daring guideline also deviates from all great epistemological philosophies dating from the beginning of the century with which the Vienna Circle's founder engaged in fruitful dialogue - among which Neokantianism and phenomenology, as well as Hilbertian Axiomatic or Poincaré and Duhem's doctrines

International audience; Background & Aims: Butyrate oxidation is impaired in intestinal mucosa of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Butyrate uptake by colonocytes involves the monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) 1. We aimed to investigate the role of MCT1 in butyrate oxidation deficiency during colonic inflammation. Methods: Colonic tissues were collected from patients with IBD or healthy controls and from rats with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. The intestinal epithelial cell line HT-29 was treated with interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). MCT1 expression was analyzed by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, Western blot, and immunofluorescence. Butyrate uptake and oxidation in HT-29 cells was assessed using [C-14]-butyrate. The mechanism of MCT1 gene regulation was analyzed by nuclear run-on and reporter gene assays. Results: MCT1 messenger RNA (mRNA) and protein levels were markedly decreased in inflamed colonic mucosa of IBD patients and rats. In HT-29 cells, down-regulation of MCT1 mRNA and protein abundance by IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha correlated with a decrease in butyrate uptake and subsequent oxidation. IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha did not affect MCTI mRNA stability but rather down-regulated gene transcription. We demonstrate that the cytokine response element is located in the proximal -111/+213 core region of the MCT1 promoter. Conclusions: The data suggest that butyrate oxidation deficiency in intestinal inflammation is a consequence of reduction in MCT1-mediated butyrate uptake. This reinforces the proposition that butyrate oxidation deficiency in IBD is not a primary defect.

International audience; TDMA based MAC protocols can provide a very good utilization of the shared radio resources, especially at high input loads, in synchronized mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). Global positioning systems like GPS or GALLILEO should provide a very good timing accuracy for synchronization of nodes. This paper presents a new medium access protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, called CROMA. CROMA is collision-free and receiver-oriented. It operates in a slotted environment, in a dynamic and distributed way. In this protocol, receivers act as local base stations and can manage one or several communications on a single slot. Thus, sophisticated functions are allowed at higher layers. Moreover, the hidden terminal as well as the exposed terminal problems are handled by CROMA. A theoretical analysis and extensive simulations show that CROMA can reach very high throughputs.

International audience; According to Burkitt's hypothesis, dietary fibres may protect against the development of colorectal cancer. In rats, studies have shown that only butyrate-producing fibres are protective. In parallel, in humans, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which target cyclooxygenases, have been shown to display a protective effect against colorectal cancer. Among them, COX-2-selective inhibitors which present less side effects than non-selective agents, are promising as chemopreventive agents. Our aim was to analyse the effect of an association between butyrate-producing fibres and the COX-2 inhibitor on the development of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in rats. Fisher F344 rats were fed with (1) a standard low fibre control diet; (2) the standard diet supplemented with 1500 ppm celecoxib; (3) a diet supplemented with 6% fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS); and (4) a diet with both celecoxib and FOS. Three weeks later, the rats were injected twice with azoxymethane and the number of ACF was determined 15 weeks later. In the control group, $43.8 \pm 6.4$ ACF were found. This number was not significantly modified by the addition of FOS or celecoxib alone to the diet. However, the association of FOS and celecoxib resulted in a 61% reduction in the number of ACF ($P < 0.01$). The number of aberrant crypt per foci was also reduced. Thus, although no significant effect of celecoxib or FOS alone was identified, the association of butyrate-producing fibre and celecoxib was effective in preventing the development of ACF. This preliminary study argues for a strong protective effect of such an association which deserves further studies.

Cet article decrit une plate-forme radio logicielle reconfigurable, permettant de realiser ďune maniere souple des traitements en temps reel sur une interface radio de type 3G. Cette plate-forme est actuellement utilisee pour implementer des methodes de transmission-reception ainsi que des protocoles, inspires des normes 3G (umts, cdma2000). Une vue ďensemble de ľarchitecture materielle est donnee dans cet article ainsi que des exemples ďimplantations logicielles, aussi bien sur processeurs de traitement du signal (dsp) que sur des processeurs classiaues.

A major concern of today’s and near future mobile communication systems is represented by the need of providing universal seamless connection to the users. Software Defined Radio (SDR) systems lend themselves to handle several different standards and types of service, and this motivates the already large and still increasing interest in this research area. Eurecom and EPFL have started a joint project whose objective is to study and implement a real-time SDR communication platform to validate advanced algorithms for wireless communications. Due to various practical design issues, the platform implements the essential physical layer features of the time-division duplex (TDD) mode of the UMTS standard proposal (air-interface and signal processing), although frequency-division duplex (FDD) mode and even other standards could also be implemented. The platform is a real-time PC based system that can handle wide-band radio resources. It provides hardware, DSP software, and link level software functionality. In this paper we address the major issues related to the design of a real-time SDR system. We also describe the general architecture, the signal processing techniques adopted to implement the transmitter and receiver SDR front-end, the current platform set-up, and we provide DSP performance measurements. Finally, we consider the future perspectives for the platform evolution.

Cloud-RAN (CRAN) is considered as one key en-abler for beyond 4G networks, offering multiplexing gains, and advanced cooperation and coordinated signal processing. However, a key obstacle in the adoption of the CRAN architecture is that it requires very high capacity and low latency fronthaul (FH) links to carry raw I/Q samples between remote radio heads (RRH) and the baseband units (BBUs). These capacity requirements could be reduced by a more flexible split of baseband processing between BBUs and RRHs. Nevertheless, while moving some of the processing back into the RRH is expected to reduce FH rates, the amount of reduction mainly depends on the split, cell load, scenario and it might also introduce some delays. To this end, this paper studies the impact of different functional splits on the FH capacity for representative scenarios. Furthermore, we propose the use of a packet-based fronthaul network and study the joint impact of different packetization methods and RRH-BBU functional splits on the FH rate and latency. Based on this study, we provide some insights on the feasibility and optimality of different combinations, and the potential multiplexing benefits in terms of numbers of RRHs one could support over a single Ethernet-based FH network.

Caching content closer to the users has been proposed as a win-win scenario in order to offer better rates to the users while saving costs from the operators. Nonetheless, caching can be successful if the cached files manage to attract a lot of requests. To this end, we take advantage of the fact that the internet is becoming more entertainment oriented and propose to bind recommendation systems and caching in order to increase the hit rate. We model a user who requests multiple contents from a network which is equipped with a cache. We propose a modeling framework for such a user which is based on Markov chains and depart from the IRM. We delve into different versions of the problem and derive optimal and suboptimal solutions according to the case we examine. Finally we examine the variation of the Recommendation aware caching problem and propose practical algorithms that come with performance guarantees. For the former, the results indicate that there are high gains for the operators and that myopic schemes without a vision, are heavily suboptimal. While for the latter, we conclude that the caching decisions can significantly improve when taking into consideration the underlying recommendations., La mise en cache du contenu au plus près des utilisateurs a été proposée comme un scénario gagnant-gagnant afin d'offrir de meilleurs tarifs aux utilisateurs tout en économisant sur les coûts des opérateurs. Néanmoins, la mise en cache peut réussir si les fichiers mis en cache parviennent à attirer un grand nombre de demandes. À cette fin, nous profitons du fait qu'Internet est de plus en plus axé sur le divertissement et proposons de lier les systèmes de recommandation et la mise en cache afin d'augmenter le taux de réussite. Nous modélisons un utilisateur qui demande plusieurs contenus à partir d'un réseau équipé d'un cache. Nous proposons un cadre de modélisation pour un tel utilisateur qui est basé sur des chaînes de Markov et s'écarte de l'IRM. Nous explorons différentes versions du problème et dérivons des solutions optimales et sous-optimales selon le cas que nous examinons. Enfin, nous examinons la variation du problème de mise en cache prenant en compte la recommandation et proposons des algorithmes pratiques assortis de garanties de performances. Pour les premiers, les résultats indiquent qu'il y a des gains élevés pour les opérateurs et que les schémas myopes sans vision sont fortement sous-optimaux. Alors que pour ce dernier, nous concluons que les décisions de mise en cache peuvent considérablement s'améliorer en tenant compte des recommandations sous-jacentes.

According to Cisco's predictions, there will be more than 50 billions of devices connected to the Internet by 2020.The devices and produced data are mainly exploited to build domain-specific Internet of Things (IoT) applications. From a data-centric perspective, these applications are not interoperable with each other.To assist users or even machines in building promising inter-domain IoT applications, main challenges are to exploit, reuse, interpret and combine sensor data.To overcome interoperability issues, we designed the Machine-to-Machine Measurement (M3) framework consisting in:(1) generating templates to easily build Semantic Web of Things applications, (2) semantically annotating IoT data to infer high-level knowledge by reusing as much as possible the domain knowledge expertise, and (3) a semantic-based security application to assist users in designing secure IoT applications.Regarding the reasoning part, stemming from the 'Linked Open Data', we propose an innovative idea called the 'Linked Open Rules' to easily share and reuse rules to infer high-level abstractions from sensor data.The M3 framework has been suggested to standardizations and working groups such as ETSI M2M, oneM2M, W3C SSN ontology and W3C Web of Things. Proof-of-concepts of the flexible M3 framework have been developed on the cloud (http://www.sensormeasurement.appspot.com/) and embedded on Android-based constrained devices., Selon les prévisions de Cisco , il y aura plus de 50 milliards d'appareils connectés à Internet d'ici 2020. Les appareils et les données produites sont principalement exploitées pour construire des applications « Internet des Objets (IdO) ». D'un point de vue des données, ces applications ne sont pas interopérables les unes avec les autres. Pour aider les utilisateurs ou même les machines à construire des applications 'Internet des Objets' inter-domaines innovantes, les principaux défis sont l'exploitation, la réutilisation, l'interprétation et la combinaison de ces données produites par les capteurs. Pour surmonter les problèmes d'interopérabilité, nous avons conçu le système Machine-to-Machine Measurement (M3) consistant à: (1) enrichir les données de capteurs avec les technologies du web sémantique pour décrire explicitement leur sens selon le contexte, (2) interpréter les données des capteurs pour en déduire des connaissances supplémentaires en réutilisant autant que possible la connaissance du domaine définie par des experts, et (3) une base de connaissances de sécurité pour assurer la sécurité dès la conception lors de la construction des applications IdO. Concernant la partie raisonnement, inspiré par le « Web de données », nous proposons une idée novatrice appelée le « Web des règles » afin de partager et réutiliser facilement les règles pour interpréter et raisonner sur les données de capteurs. The simulation is a primary step on the evaluation process of modern networked systems. The scalability and efficiency of such a tool in view of increasing complexity of the emerging networks is a key to derive valuable results. The discrete event simulation is recognized as the most scalable model that copes with both parallel and distributed architecture. Nevertheless, the recent hardware provides new heterogeneous computing resources that can be exploited in parallel.The main scope of this thesis is to provide a new mechanisms and optimizations that enable efficient and scalable parallel simulation using heterogeneous computing node architecture including multicore CPU and GPU. To address the efficiency, we propose to describe the events that only differs in their data as a single entry to reduce the event management cost. At the run time, the proposed hybrid scheduler will dispatch and inject the events on the most appropriate computing target based on the event descriptor and the current load obtained through a feedback mechanisms such that the hardware usage rate is maximized. Results have shown a significant gain of 100 times compared to traditional CPU based approaches. In order to increase the scalability of the system, we propose a new simulation model, denoted as general purpose coordinator-master-worker, to address jointly the challenge of distributed and parallel simulation at different levels. The performance of a distributed simulation that relies on the GP-CMW architecture tends toward the maximal theoretical efficiency in a homogeneous deployment. The scalability of such a simulation model is validated on the largest European GPU-based supercomputer, La simulation est une étape primordiale dans l'évolution des systèmes en réseaux. L’évolutivité et l’efficacité des outils de simulation est une clef principale de l’objectivité des résultats obtenue, étant donné la complexité croissante des nouveaux des réseaux sans-fils. La simulation a évènement discret est parfaitement adéquate au passage à l'échelle, cependant les architectures logiciel existantes ne profitent pas des avancées récente du matériel informatique comme les processeurs parallèle et les coprocesseurs graphique. Dans ce contexte, l'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer des mécanismes d'optimisation qui permettent de surpasser les limitations des approches actuelles en combinant l’utilisation des ressources de calcules hétérogène. Pour répondre à la problématique de l’efficacité, nous proposons de changer la représentation d'événement, d'une représentation bijective (évènement-descripteur) à une représentation injective (groupe d'évènements-descripteur). Cette approche permet de réduire la complexité de l'ordonnancement d'une part et de maximiser la capacité d'exécuter massivement des évènements en parallèle d'autre part. Dans ce sens, nous proposons une approche d'ordonnancement d'évènements hybride qui se base sur un enrichissement du descripteur pour maximiser le degré de parallélisme en combinons la capacité de calcule du CPU et du GPU dans une même simulation. Les résultats comparatives montre un gain en terme de temps de simulation de l’ordre de 100x en comparaison avec une exécution équivalente sur CPU uniquement. Pour répondre à la problématique d’évolutivité du système, nous proposons une nouvelle architecture distribuée basée sur trois acteurs.

Machine type communications is seen as a form of data communication, among devices and/or from devices to a set of servers, that do not necessarily require human interaction. However, it is challenging to accommodate MTC in LTE as a result of its specific characteristics and requirements. The aim of this thesis is to propose mechanisms and optimize the access layer techniques for MTC in LTE. For uplink access, we propose two methods to improve the performance of random access in terms of latency: a packet aggregation method and a Transmission Time Interval bundling scheme. To further reduce the uplink latency and enable massive number of connected device, we propose a new contention based access method (CBA) to bypass both the redundant signaling in the random access procedure and also the latency of regular scheduling. For downlink reception, we propose two methods to analyze the performance of discontinuous reception DRX mode for MTC applications: the first with the Poisson distribution and the second with the Pareto distribution for sporadic traffic. With the proposed models, the power saving factor and wake up latency can be accurately estimated for a given choice of DRX parameters, thus allowing to select the ones presenting the optimal tradeoff., Les communications de type machine-à-machine M2M sont considérées comme des formes de communication de données qui ne requièrent pas nécessairement d'interaction humaine. Cependant, ce type de communication n'est pas efficace dans les réseaux cellulaires, en raison de leurs caractéristiques spécifiques, telles que. L'objectif de cette thèse est de proposer des mécanismes et d'optimiser les techniques de la couche d'accès radio LTE pour les communications M2M. Pour l'accès au canal de liaison montante, nous proposons deux méthodes afin d'améliorer la performance d'accès aléatoire en terme de latence et de consommation énergétique: une méthode d'agrégation de paquets et une autre de transmission multiple pendant l'intervalle de temps de transmission. Afin de réduire encore plus le temps de latence de liaison montante et permettre une connexion d'un grand nombre de machines au réseau, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode d'accès basée sur la contention CBA pour éviter d'une part la signalisation redondante pour accéder au canal et d'autre part la latence de l'ordonnanceur. Pour la réception de liaison descendante, nous proposons deux méthodes pour analyser les performances du mécanisme de réception discontinu DRX pour les applications M2M: la première se base sur une distribution de Poisson, la suivante sur une distribution Pareto pour le trafic sporadique. Avec les modèles proposés, le facteur d'économie d’énergie et la latence pour transiter du mode sommeil au mode actif peuvent être estimés avec précision pour un choix donné de paramètres DRX, permettant ainsi de sélectionner ceux permettant d'atteindre le compromis optimal.

Recent years have witnessed a massive evolution of mobile communications. When no agreement between the network providers exists, changing the attached network still means breaking the session and relying on the application to recover the lost data. In parallel, it is hardly possible for a mobile user to control the connectivity of his terminal. The objective of this thesis is to present the concept of an innovative technological framework for the autonomous control of multimode terminals in heterogeneous and non-federated wireless environments. The aim is to enable a self-configuring terminal to connect and roam seamlessly across independent networks, while respecting its user’s choices and preferences. The target scheme involves abstraction and cross-layer mechanisms. It takes into account constraints based on heterogeneous wireless systems, autonomous architectures and enables generic services such as smart access network selection, connectivity and session management. This scheme applies to the mobile terminal, with mechanisms independent of the network infrastructure. The thesis analyses how existing technologies are enhanced and combined with new features to achieve this objective and gives a description of the overall concept and of its implementation. A simulated model is used to assess the validity of the proposed framework. Diverse applications to real systems that implemented the components of this framework are presented, highlighting the generality and key benefits of the concept., Nous assistons actuellement à une évolution considérable des communications mobiles. En l’absence d’accord entre les fournisseurs, changer son point d’attachement au réseau signifie encore casser la session en cours et dépendre de l'application pour récupérer les données perdues. De même, il n'est guère possible pour un utilisateur mobile de contrôler la connectivité de son appareil. L'objectif de cette thèse est de présenter le concept d'une structure technologique innovante pour le contrôle autonome des terminaux multimodes dans les environnements sans fil hétérogènes et non fédérés. Son but est de permettre à un terminal auto-configuré de se connecter et de se déplacer de manière transparente à travers des réseaux indépendants, tout en respectant les choix et préférences de son utilisateur. Le schéma obtenu implique des mécanismes d’abstraction et inter-couches. Il tient compte de contraintes basées sur les systèmes sans fil hétérogènes, les architectures autonomes, et permet l’exécution de services génériques comme le choix du réseau d'accès et la gestion de la connectivité et des sessions. Ce schéma s'applique au terminal mobile, avec des mécanismes dissociés de l'infrastructure réseau. La thèse analyse comment les technologies existantes sont améliorées et combinées avec de nouvelles fonctionnalités pour atteindre cet objectif, et donne une description de l'ensemble du concept et de sa mise en œuvre. Un modèle simulé est utilisé pour évaluer la validité de la structure proposée. Diverses applications à des systèmes réels mettant en œuvre les éléments de cette architecture sont présentées, faisant ressortir la généralité et les principaux avantages du concept.

In the last decades, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been considered as one of the most emerging research area due to their promising role in promoting traffic efficiency and enhancing road safety. ITS cooperative safety applications, being the most vital and critical, have gained a lot of attention. The effectiveness of these applications depends widely on the efficient exchange of two main types of information. The periodic awareness corresponding to the one-hop location information of surrounding environment and the multi-hop event-driven information generated at the detection of a safety situation. Due to the large scale characteristic of ITS, this information is expected to be subject to severe congestion which might impact its reliable reception. The goal of this thesis is to focus on the reliable and robust control of safety-related information by reducing the channel congestion and at the same time taking into account the requirements of safety applications. We address first the event-driven safety information. We proposed a multi-hop policy showed to improve the dissemination of the event-driven information. However, it remains strongly sensitive to the channel load resulting from periodic awareness transmissions. On the other hand, the effective transmission of event-driven information depends primarily on the accurate detection of safety events and accordingly on the accuracy of awareness. Thus, we provide an efficient awareness control mechanism in order to provide better accuracy and limit the channel congestion. The approaches proposed in this thesis have deeply investigated the trade-off between ensuring the requirements of cooperative safety and the efficient management of congestion in vehicular network., Dans ces dernières années, les Systèmes de Transport Intelligents (STI) ont été considérés comme l'un des domaines de recherche les plus émergents en raison de leur rôle prometteur dans l'amélioration de la gestion du trafic et de la sécurité routière. Les applications coopératives de sécurité, étant les plus cruciales, ont gagné beaucoup d'intérêt. L'efficacité de ces applications dépend largement de l'échange efficace de deux principaux types d'informations. L'information de localisation périodique correspondant à l'information de localisation du voisinage et l'information événementielle qui est transmise en multi-sauts et générée lors de la détection d'une situation d'urgence. En raison de la caractéristique à grande échelle des STI, cette information fait l'objet du problème de congestion dans le réseau. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'assurer un contrôle fiable et robuste des informations de sécurité permettant de réduire la congestion du canal tout en tenant en compte des exigences des applications de sécurité. Nous examinons la diffusion de l'information événementielle en proposant une approche a multi-sauts qui a montré une amélioration de la réception de l'information. Cependant, cette approche reste très sensible à la charge de canal résultant de transmissions de l'information de localisation périodiques. D'autre part, la transmission efficace de l'information événementielle repose essentiellement sur la détection précise des événements de sécurité et en conséquence sur la précision de l'information de localisation. Ainsi, nous proposons un mécanisme de contrôle de l'information de localisation afin de fournir une meilleure précision et limiter la charge du canal. Les approches proposées dans cette thèse ont profondément étudié le compromis entre le respect des exigences des applications de sécurité et la gestion efficace de la congestion dans le réseau véhiculaire.

Cette thèse se concentre sur la conception, le développement, et l'évaluation des mécanismes cross-layer basés sur le protocole 802.11 et qui visent à améliorer la qualité de service dans ce type de réseaux. Avant d'étudier les approches cross-layer, nous avons exploré l'idée d'améliorer, séparément, le fonctionnement d'une couche de communication; à savoir le protocole MAC 802.11e qui est conçu pour garantir la différentiation de service. Bien qu'on ait aboutit à des améliorations en utilisant un nouveau mécanisme adaptatif de la couche MAC, les résultats des études de performances montrent les limitations de l'architecture en couches qui a, par ailleurs, démontré ses bons résultats dans les réseaux filaires. Il y a de nombreuses possibilités de coopération inter-couche. Dans nos travaux, nous nous intéressons au partage de paramètres entre la couche MAC et la couche routage. Nous pensons que l'interaction entre ces deux couches fournit une meilleure amélioration de performance que la coopération entre d'autres couches. En particulier, nous nous concentrons sur le problème de l'acheminement des paquets de données d'une manière qui prend en compte le niveau de congestion du canal, les caractéristiques de réseau, et les besoins de protocoles de couches hautes. Nous proposons plusieurs mécanismes cross-layer qui visent à adresser un routage optimal dans MANETs tout en augmentant la performance des métriques de QoS importantes tel que la stabilité du chemin, le délai de bout-en-bout, et la conservation d'énergie avec et sans assistance/initiation du réseau. À cet effet, nous identifions les paramètres adéquats à partir de la couche MAC et la couche réseau et nous les adaptons pour fournir de la qualité de service basée sur de nouveaux algorithmes de coopération inter-couches. En outre, nous identifions les avantages et les inconvénients des architectures inter-couches par rapport à l'architecture en couche traditionnelle pour améliorer la performance de protocoles de communication dans un environnement sans fil.

Les objectifs principaux de cette thèse sont la conception, l'analyse et l'optimisation de protocoles nouveaux ou déjà existants de contrôle d'accès au canal dans les réseaux ad hoc, et l'étude des performances fondamentales de quelques estimateurs cohérents et non cohérents du temps d'arrivée des signaux à très large bande. Pour les réseaux simple-bond, on introduit deux nouveaux schémas de retransmissions pour les protocoles ALOHA synchronisé et IEEE802.11 DCF. Les schémas proposés sont quasi-optimale en terme de débit et de délai, et sont quasi-aveugle dans le sens qu'il nécessite juste la connaissance de la taille du réseau. Pour les réseaux multi-bonds, on améliore le mécanisme de réservation RTS/CTS pour résoudre le problème du terminal masqué que rencontre DCF. On analyse ensuite les performances du protocole résultant, et on propose un algorithme distribué basé sur la théorie des approximations stochastiques pour contrôler les retransmissions. Pour les systèmes multicanaux,on propose un nouveau protocole de type ALOHA qui fonctionne sans assignement préalable des canaux. On dérive ensuite un schéma de retransmission qui a les mêmes caractéristiques que celles du schéma obtenu pour le protocole DCF en topologie simple-bond, et ceci sans l'écoute du canal. La signalisation UWB est un exemple de technologie de transmission qui peut être employé pour fournir des systèmes multicanaux. On étudie alors les performances fondamentales de quelques estimateurs cohérents et non-cohérents du temps d'arrivée des signaux UWB. La connaissance de ces performances est nécessaire pour la synchronisation et pour l'exploitation des capacités de localisation des signaux UWB.

Le support de la mobilité dans les protocoles réseaux existants est devenu primordial, à cause du nombre croissant d'utilisateurs de terminaux mobiles désirant garder une connexion constante au réseau, tout en se déplaçant librement à travers des segments de réseaux d'accès sans fil hétérogènes. Le protocole de routage dominant dans les architectures réseaux filaires est IP "Internet protocole". Ce protocole est en passe de dominer aussi le mode des réseaux sans fils. Ainsi, il est naturel d'introduire des mécanismes de gestion de mobilité basés sur IP, dont un processus de handover (passage d'une point d'accès radio à une autre point) efficace et flexible afin de garantir aux utilisateurs une qualité de service minimale de transmission des donnés. En effet, un handover inefficace génère de la latence, de la gigue et des pertes de paquets. La transmission des données est affectée et dégrade la qualité de services de l'application utilisant les services du réseau. Dans cette thèse, nous examinons et analysons d'abord la complexité et l'efficacité des principales techniques de handover et de gestion de mobilité basée sur IP. Les résultats de cette analyse seront ensuite exploités pour présenter finalement notre proposition de soft handover basé sur IPv6. Cette solution permettra l'extension de mobile IPv6 avec une gestion efficace, transparente et locale du multihoming. Bien sur la duplication des flux est bidirectionnel entre le réseau et le mobile et permet un changement de point d'accès au réseau sans perte de données. Nous analysons ensuite les performances de notre approche à travers des résultats de simulations. Ces simulations sont effectuées dans un simulateur développé par notre équipe nommé Gemini2. Cette partie inclut également une comparaison des performances par rapport au fast handover bicasting et Mobile IPv6 basique. Finalement, le dernier chapitre de la thèse inclut notre expérience de l'implémentation d'un prototype mobile multi interfaces et un testbed mobile IPv6 soft handover. Cette implémentation a comme but principal la validation de nos travaux. Ce banc de test nous permettra, en plus, d'analyser les performances du soft handover dans des conditions réelles et avec différents types d'applications et de flux multimédia.

Cette thèse apporte une contribution au domaine des protocoles de contrôle d'accès au médium (MAC) for réseaux ad hoc sans fil. Ces réseaux sont par définition créés pour l'occasion et ne nécessitent aucune infrastructure a priori. La norme IEEE 802.11 permet de réaliser aisément des réseaux ad hoc mais souffre de faiblesses en termes de capacité et d'équité, en particulier à forte charge. Cette thèse propose des alternatives à la norme. Le chapitre 1 dégage de la littérature une classification des protocoles MAC et distingue deux familles: les protocoles basés sur la compétition et ceux sans conflit. Le chapitre 2 évalue les performances de IEEE 802.11, avec des trafics TCP, UDP et voix sur IP en présence d'un point d'accès (PA). Les effets du phénomène de champ proche-champ lointain sont étudiés. Un exemple de déploiement pour zones peu denses est présenté. Enfin, nous montrons que les concepts du réseau multi-bond peuvent être utilisés pour étendre la couverture d'un PA. Le chapitre 3 propose un nouveau protocole MAC, appelé CROMA, pour réseaux ad hoc fortement chargés. L'analyse théorique et les simulations montrent que CROMA permet d'atteindre des débits plus importants et une plus grande équité. Le chapitre 4 étudie des mécanismes qui utilisent les interactions entre couches protocolaires pour une augmentation de la capacité et pour les évolutions de CROMA: (i) une version simplifiée de CROMA et une politique d'ordonnancement tirent partie de la mobilité des terminaux. (ii) La diversité multi-utilisateur améliore la phase de réservation de CROMA basée sur l'ALOHA slotté. (iii) La détection multi-utilisateur offre également des gains important en terme de capacité.

The advances in portable computing and wireless technologies are opening up exciting possibilities for the future of wireless mobile networking. A Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes forming dynamical and temporary network without the use of any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. Its capability of providing rapidly deployable communication makes it an ideal choice for consumer, company and public uses. Most applications are characterized by a close degree of collaboration. Multicasting could prove to be an efficient way of providing necessary services for these kinds of applications. However, due to the limited transmission range of wireless network interfaces, multiple network hops may be needed for one node to exchange data with another one across the network. Consequently, the extra challenges such as frequent topology change and limited network resources are introduced in multicasting protocol design. In this dissertation, we first examine different techniques and strategies, which are used by current multicast routing protocols for MANETs. Then, we present our proposition, multicast routing protocol with dynamic core (MRDC), to provide best effort multicast routing. This protocol addresses the issue of how to optimize packet delivery success rate and overhead. This protocol gives a trade-off between forwarding overhead and routing overhead but also an optimization between delivery success rate and overhead regarding application requirement and network situation. For the applications, which require 100% percent packet delivery, we study a reliable multicasting protocol that activates intermediate nodes to assist retransmission. All these works have the same goal: optimize packet delivery ratio and overhead to satisfy application requirement with good utilization of network resources especially bandwidth. This dissertation also includes our experiences in implementing a mobile ad hoc testbed. We developed this testbed by implementation of DDR, a unicast routing protocol and MRDC so that the testbed can support both one-to-one communications and many-to-many communications. This testbed will allow us to analyze the performance of routing protocols in real network. It can also be used to study protocols and new MANET applications., Les avancées dans le domaine de l'informatique personnelle et des technologies sans fil ouvrent des possibilités passionnantes pour le futur de la gestion des réseaux mobiles. Les réseaux mobiles "ad-hoc" sont créés par un ensemble de terminaux sans fil qui communiquent entre eux. Les noeuds d'un réseau ad hoc forment dynamiquement un réseau façon sans utilisation de quelconque infrastructure existante ou administration centralisée. Ses capacités à fournir rapidement et flexiblement des moyens de communication font des réseaux ad hoc un choix idéal pour certaines applications personnelles, publiques ou d'entreprise. Beaucoup de ces applications sont caractérisées par un degré étroit de collaboration. Le multicast peut s'avérer être une manière efficace de fournir les services nècessaires pour ce genre d'application. En raison de la limitation de la couverture radio de l'interface sans fil, le relayage par sauts multiples peut être nècessaire pour qu un noeud puisse échanger des données avec les autres à travers le réseau. En conséquence, les défis supplémentaires tels que le changement fréquent de topologie et les ressources limitées de réseau sont à relever dans la conception de protocole multicast. Dans cette dissertation, nous examinons d'abord les techniques qui sont employées par des protocoles courants de routage de multicast. Ensuite, nous présentons en détail notre proposition, Multicast routing protocol with dynamic core (MRDC), pour fournir un routage de multicast de "best effort" . Ce protocole adresse le problème de comment optimiser le taux de succès de la livraison de paquets tout en réduisant le coût de signalisation du protocole. Il donne une compromis entre les surcharges liées au routage et les surcharges de transmission mais également une optimisation entre le taux de succès de la livraison et les surcharges en regardant des exigences des applications et les conditions du réseau. En outre, pour les applications qui exigent la livraison fiable de paquets (cent pour cent de réussite), nous proposons un protocole fiable de multicast, Active Reliable Multicast Protocol with Intermediate node support (ARMPIS), qui active des noeuds intermédiaires pour aider les retransmissions. Tous ces travaux ont le même but: optimiser le taux de livraison de paquets pour répondre aux exigences des applications avec la bonne utilisation des ressources du réseau et notamment la bande de passante. Cette dissertation inclut également notre experience de la construction et de la validation d'un banc de test de réseau ad-hoc. Nous avons développé ce banc de test par l'implementation de DDR, d'un protocole de routage d'unicast et de MRDC de sorte que le banc de test puisse supporter des communications point-à-point et aussi des communications multipoint. Ce banc de test nous permettra d'analyser les performances de MRDC dans un vrai réseau. Il peut également être employé pour étudier des protocoles et de nouvelles applications de réseaux ad hoc san fil.

The packets of these applications must be received without significant loss, with low delay and jitter. When packet loss rate exceeds 10% and one way delay exceeds 150 ms, speech quality can be quite poor. Human conversation tolerates a maximum end-to-end delay of between 150 and 300 milliseconds. In addition, these packets must have a small delay variation to maintain constant rate for successive audio packets at the destination. In ad hoc networks, many factors such load traffic, codec bit rate, routing protocol configuration and mobility speed have an impact on packet loss rate, delays, and jitter which degrade the quality of the received audio signal. In this paper, we analysed how these factors influence packet delay and loss observed at the reciever side. A best knowledge of this behaviour is important to develop more effective mechanisms for dynamic adjustment of playout delays or throughput, in order to improve the perceptual quality of audio applications running in ad hoc networks. At the receiver side, we distinguish two operating phases of an audio flow, normal phase and reconfiguration phase. During a normal phase the flow reaches the destination from the source on the same route without link breakage, while during a reconfiguration phase, nodes move on the current route and the audio flow transfer is interrupted for delay required from a routing protocol to establish a new route towards the destination.
