Abstract

For the last two decades the European Commission (EC), and in particular the Directorate General Information Society and Media, has been strongly supporting the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in healthcare. ICT is an enabling technology which can provide various solutions in the healthcare sector, ranging from electronic patient records and health information networks to intelligent prosthetics and robotised surgery. The EC funded the present study with the aim to investigate the potential of robotics in healthcare. Robotics for healthcare is an emerging field which is expected to grow in the face of demographic change (ageing), expected shortages of healthcare personnel, calls for improving quality of life for the elderly and disabled, and the need for even higher quality care, for example high precision surgery. All these factors stimulate innovation in the domain of Robotics for Healthcare. Several programs and networks dedicated to research on robotics are already focusing part of their efforts on applications in healthcare.

5. Platform for frail elderly people supporting information and communication.

Abstract

There is a growing need for technology to support the frail elderly living independently in home situations. Several telecommunication systems already exist. These systems are developed mainly from the perspective of healthcare professionals and focus on efficient delivery of healthcare services. They hardly meet the specific needs of the frail elderly. In this project a platform with specific needs of the frail elderly people has been designed, running on standard PCs. This system supports living independently, social participation, wellbeing, and asking for care services. The platform was evaluated and subjects assess the system as user friendly, and supportive for their independence and self-reliance. They recommend it to other users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. MOVEMENT – A Modular and Versatile Mobility Enhancement System.

Abstract

This paper describes a novel robotic system which aims on supporting the mobility of elderly citizens and persons with disabilities. The key innovation of this research project is the use of the concept of ˵Modular Mobility″. According to this concept the system consists of a mobile (robotic) platform as core system and several dedicated ˵application modules″.
