Introduction: Ocular syphilis is a rare but potentially sight-threatening manifestation of infection with the spirochete Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Molecular strain typing of clinical specimens obtained from patients with syphilis can provide useful epidemiological and clinical information. In this study, we assess the utility of non-ocular clinical samples in strain typing for patients with diagnosed ocular syphilis. Methods: We collected samples of excess blood, serum, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 6 patients with ocular syphilis treated in 2013–2016. DNA was extracted, purified, and then analyzed using an enhanced molecular typing method including sequence analysis of tp0548, number of repeats in the arp gene, and restriction fragment length polymorphism of the tpr gene. Results: Molecular strain typing based on tp0548 gene sequence analysis revealed two cases of type F and two cases of type G in 3 of 6 (50%) cases with CSF samples, 1 of which was obtained after starting antibiotics. In a patient with 2 distinct episodes, the same tp0548 type (type G) was identified in both episodes using different sample types (CSF, whole blood). Serum samples were available in 6 cases, but none were successfully typed with any of the methods. Amplification of the tpr and arp genes was unsuccessful in all cases. Overall, strain types were identified in 4 of the 7 episodes. Conclusion: Treponema pallidum strain types F and G were detected in CSF or whole blood in 4 of 7 episodes in this series. Two correlational survey studies were conducted among adult samples (Ns = 205; 697) to test the effects on general life satisfaction of attachment to three close others: mother, father, and romantic partner. Results showed that attachment to mother and father also matter in adulthood, in that they are associated with adult life satisfaction. Secure attachments to mother and father were positively associated with life satisfaction, and anxious and avoidant attachments to mother and father were negatively associated with life satisfaction. Moreover, attachment to the romantic partner was also related to life satisfaction, so that secure attachment was positively related to life satisfaction, and anxious and avoidant attachments were negatively related to the outcome variable. Importantly, attachment to mother and father were still significant predictors of life satisfaction when effects of attachment to the current romantic partner were controlled for. The effects of parental attachments on life satisfaction were not mediated by attachment to the romantic partner. Theoretical and applied implications of the findings are discussed. Appendiceal diverticulitis is known as a rare pathology and its etiology remains largely unknown. We describe a case of a 41-year-old woman with a past history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who was admitted to the Emergency Department at a rural hospital in Australia with right iliac fossa pain (RIF) and later was found to have acute appendiceal diverticulitis on histopathologic studies. Thus far, no literature has described IBD as one of the possible contributing factors of appendiceal diverticulitis. Background: Suggested timing of reconstruction of congenital hand differences varies widely. The goal of timely intervention is to achieve near-normal appearance and function. We evaluated national trends in surgical timing of congenital hand differences to determine whether interventions align with the literature. Methods: Recommended ages for surgical reconstruction were identified. The Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Project database was queried from 2012 to 2020 for children who underwent surgery for simple syndactyly (SS), complex syndactyly (CS), polydactyly, or congenital trigger finger. Subgroup analysis was conducted to assess whether the surgeon's subspecialty (plastic surgery vs orthopedic surgery, pediatric vs generalist) influenced the timing of repair. Results: Congenital trigger finger and CS reconstructions occurred largely within the recommended age range (73.8% and 52.2%, respectively). Polydactyly repairs primarily occurred earlier than the recommendations (54.0%). Timing of SS reconstruction was split, either occurring before (44.3%) or after (41.4%) the recommendations. For children with polydactyly, plastic surgeons were more likely to perform polydactyly reconstruction at a younger age compared with orthopedic surgeons ( P = .0001). Conclusions: Established expert recommendations for the treatment of congenital hand differences are largely not followed in practice in the United States.
