Natural geological conditions together with the impact of human activities could produce environmental problems due to high As concentrations. The aim of this study was to assess the role of epipsammic biofilm-sediment systems onto As (V) sorption and to evaluate the effect of the presence of equimolar P concentrations on As retention. A natural biofilm was grown on sediment samples in the laboratory, using river water as nutrient supplier. Sorption experiments with initial As concentrations 0, 5, 25, 50,100, 250, and 500 μg L-1 were performed. The average percentage of As sorbed was 78.9 ±3.5 and 96.9 ± 6.6% for the sediment and biofilmsediment systems, respectively. Phosphate decreased by 25% the As sorption capactity in the sediment devoid of biofilm, whereas no significant effect was observed in the systems with biofilm. Freundlich, Sips, and Toth models were the best to describe experimental data. The maximum As sorption capacity of the sediment and biofilm-sediment systems was, respectively, 6.6 and 6.8 μgg-1 and 4.5 and 7.8 μgg-1 in the presence of P. In conclusion, epipsammic biofilms play an important role in the environmental quality of river systems, increasing As retention by the system, especially in environments where both As and P occur simultaneously. In this study, total phosphorus (P) concentrations and P fractions in the bed sediments of the Anllóns River (NW Spain) have been examined. The Lowest Effect Level of the Ontario Sediment Quality Guidelines was trespassed for total phosphorus (600 mg kg−1) at three out of the five sampling sites which, in addition, showed an average of 43% of bioavailable phosphate. The inorganic P fractions (loosely bound P, redox-sensitive P, metal oxide-bound P, carbonate and apatite P, and residual P) showed that inorganic P was mostly found as metal oxide bound P. The difference between total phosphorus and the sum of the inorganic P forms determined in these extracts is attributed to P associated to organic compounds being solubilized in some of the extractants, and represented in average 58% of total phosphorus. With the exception of loosely bound P, all the P fractions showed significant positive correlations with each other and with total phosphorus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the distribution and sorption behavior of phosphate and arsenate in bed sediments of the Anllóns river (NW Spain). As a consequence of the intense gold-mining activity in the past, substantial amounts of arsenic were found in the river sediments. For phosphorus, higher concentrations were found near two sources of P pollution. Sorption isotherms were described by the Freundlich, Langmuir and Tempkin equations. In general, the sediments sorbed more P than As. The equilibrium P concentration (EPC) reveals that sediments act as a scavenger for soluble P; by contrast, equilibrium As concentration (EAC) values were high for the As-rich sediments and correlates well with total arsenic content. Amorphous Fe oxides content, organic matter and fraction of clay plus silt were the main properties of the sediments related with the sorption of arsenate and phosphate. The results obtained provide a first estimate of the sorption behavior and availability of the phosphate and arsenate anions in the sediments of the Anllóns river. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laboratory experiments were carried out to explore the effect of thermal shocks (as occur during fire) and simulated rainfall events on cation leaching dynamics in an organic rich Leptic Umbrisol soil. The soil samples were collected in the field using specially designed lysimeter boxes that allow sampling and application of thermal shock treatments and simulated rainfall while keeping the soil structure unaltered. The soil temperature during the thermal shocks and degree-hours of accumulated heat were determined, and cation (Na[sup +] , K[sup +] , Ca[sup 2+] and Mg[sup 2+] ) leaching was measured in surface runoff (0-cm depth) and subsurface flow (12-cm depth) samples collected from the lysimeter boxes. Important differences were found in cation leaching in relation to thermal shock: monovalent cation leaching from the soil above 200°C (68 degree-hours) and divalent cations leaching above 220°C (195 degree-hours) was higher than that seen in other treatments. In general, the amount of cations leached increased with the severity of the thermal shock; however, under moderate conditions, there was a decrease in cation leaching, mainly of monovalent ions. The exchangeable cation losses by leaching in the intense heat treatments were ~80%. This paper reports the results of laboratory experiments to test the effects on cation leaching after thermal shocks and rainfall simulations on unaltered soil samples. The metals distribution in the bed sediments of the Anllóns River was studied, with special emphasis on the evaluation of the metal distribution as a function of the granulometric fraction chosen for the analysis. Statistical significant differences between the distribution of K, Ca, Cr, Mn, As, Rb, Sr and Nb in the bulk (<2 mm) and fine fraction (<63 μm) were not found. Fe, Ni, Cu, Ga, Zr, Zn and Pb commonly appear in higher concentrations in the fine fraction, whereas Ti appears in higher concentrations in the bulk fraction. In general, it was observed that contamination phenomena tend to equalise the concentrations of both fractions, and this was mainly explained as the result of two processes. First, the formation of coatings over sands and, second, the formation of large aggregates (pseudo-sands) at sites located over basic rocks, whose chemical behaviour is closer to that of clays and could be responsible for significant adsorption processes. Normalisation techniques to evaluate contamination were applied by testing Nb, Sr, Rb or Ga as normaliser elements and by using crustal or shale average values for background concentrations. The most satisfactory result was obtained when using shale average values and Ga as the normaliser element. Arsenic was identified as the main contaminant of the basin, exceeding in all cases the low-effect reference values proposed by sediment quality guidelines and in two cases the medium-effect reference values. These sites were identified by multivariate techniques, which allow differentiating site 10 as affected by anthropogenic inputs related to past mining activities.

In this work, vinification lees from Galicia (Spain) were chemically analysed and compared with the composition of vinification lees from other regions and residues. Moreover, vinification lees were submitted to biological test employing cress, spring barley and ryegrass seeds. The evaluated vinification lees were rich in nutrients that are essential for plants, like P (2,520 mg kg(-1)), K (36,738 mg kg(-1)) and Mg (462 mg kg(-1)), but have low pH (3.9) and high C/N ratio. However, when vinification lees were submitted to biological tests, no germination was observed for garden cress and ryegrass seeds and almost no germination for spring barley seeds, showing the negative effect of discharging lees on crop fields.

The wine industry generates a large amount of wastes, including grape marc and vinification lees. These substances can be used to produce enzymes or other food additives. Composting could be a successful strategy for the sustainable and complete recycling of grape marc. In this work, the mesophilic biodegradation of grape marc during 60 d under microaerobic conditions using several ratios of seeds, skin, and stem were studied. The presence of Penicillium spp. was detected at the beginning of the composting. Changes in chemical and biological parameters were evaluated. Biodegraded grape marc with stem showed the best organic matter properties (C/N ratio of 14 and N content of 37 g/kg) and a germination index of 155% for the growth of ray grass seeds. The results suggest that the biodegraded of grape marc could be used as fertilizer, especially for ray grass crops.
