We aimed to validate twenty-five types of incident cancer cases in the Information System for Research in Primary Care (SIDIAP) in Catalonia with the population-based cancer registries of Girona and Tarragona as the gold-standard.Methods: We calculated the sensitivity, positive predictive values (PPV), and the time-difference between the date of diagnosis entered into the SIDIAP and into the registries. We added hospital discharge cancer diagnoses to the SIDIAP to assess sensitivity changes.Results: We identified 27,046 incident cancer diagnoses in the SIDIAP from 2009–2015 among the 949,841 residents of Girona and Tarragona. The cancer types with the highest sensitivity were breast (89%, 95% CI: 88–90%), colorectal (81%, 95% CI: 80–82%), and prostate (81%, 95% CI: 80–83%). Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers had the highest PPV (76%, 95% CI: 74%-78%) followed by stomach (72%, 95% CI: 68–75%) and pancreas (71%, 95% CI: 67–75%). Most cancer diagnoses were reported with less than three months of difference between the SIDIAP and the registries. More cases were registered first in the registries than in the SIDIAP. By adding cancer diagnoses based on hospital discharge data, sensitivity increased for all cancers, especially for gallbladder and biliary tract for which the sensitivity increased by 21%.Conclusion: The SIDIAP includes 76% of the cancer diagnoses in the cancer registries but includes a considerable number of cases that are not in the registries. The SIDIAP reports most of the cancer diagnoses within a three-month period difference from the date of diagnosis in the cancer registries. Our results support the use of the SIDIAP cancer diagnoses for epidemiological research when cancer is the outcome of interest. We recommend adding hospital discharge data to the SIDIAP to increase data quality, particularly for less frequent cancer types.Keywords: validation studies, cancer, electronic health records, primary health care, population-based cancer registries

Abstract

In this work, 2D Mo and Ti MXenes (Mo 2 TiC 2 and Ti 3 C 2) were synthesised from the chemical etching of their MAX phases (Mo 2 TiAlC 2 and Ti 3 AlC 2). The physicochemical characterisation demonstrated the removal of Al from precursors obtaining layered structures enriched with metal carbides domains. Focused on potential clean energy applications of these materials, their catalytic activity was assessed in two reactions: the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ORR activity of MXenes is quite low: Mo 2 TiC 2 developed a slightly higher activity towards ORR in acidic media than Ti 3 C 2 MXene, with an onset potential for the reaction at 0.4 V RHE. However, 3-fold higher performances were achieved in alkaline media for all the studied materials, suggesting a strong dependence of their catalytic activity with the pH. On the other hand, Mo 2 TiC 2 and Ti 3 C 2 exhibited high catalytic activity toward the HER in acidic media in comparison to their commercial MAX phases and few commercial carbides. This catalytic activity was evidenced from the low onset potentials for HER, as well as low overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2, especially for Mo 2 TiC 2 (0.17 and 0.379 V RHE , respectively). Differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) experiments allowed to establish the onset potentials, avoiding the interference of other faradaic processes in the same potential region, and the rate determining steps (rds) for HER at the studied materials. Tafel plots from ionic currents for m / z = 2 indicate that the Heyrovsky step is the rds for HER at Mo 2 TiC 2 , whereas Volmer step is the rds at Ti 3 C 2. Long-term stability tests for the MXenes demonstrated that these materials maintain its activity after 10 h under operation conditions. EIS experiments performed at onset and HER evolution potentials corroborated the relevance of the presence of oxide reduction processes competing with the HER, which explains the higher catalytic activity of Mo 2 TiC 2 with respect to Ti 3 C 2. Abstract

An interesting feature in active galactic nuclei (AGN) accreting at low rate is the weakness of the reflection features in their X-ray spectra, which can result from the gradual disappearance of the torus with decreasing accretion rates. It has been suggested that low luminosity AGN (LLAGN) would have a different reflector configuration compared with high luminosity AGN, either covering a smaller fraction of the sky or simply having less material. Additionally, we note that the determination of the spectral index ($\Gamma$) and the cut-off energy of the primary power-law emission is affected by the inclusion of reflection models, showing the importance of using them to study the accretion mechanism, especially in the case of the LLAGN that have previously shown a high dispersion on the relation between $\Gamma$ and the accretion rate. Our purpose is to constrain the geometry and column density of the reflector in a sample of LLAGN covering a broad X-ray range of energy combining data from XMM-Newton + NuSTAR + Swift of a hard X-ray-flux limited sample of 17 LLAGN from BASS/DR2 with accretion rates $\lambda_{Edd}$=L$_{\rm Bol}$/L$_{\rm Edd}$, Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

The main objective of the work under study is to find means and tools to achieve the reduction of energy poverty in Spain: creation of a social bonus of services that allows politicians to make decisions for it. This energy bond or “social service bonus” includes energy costs: electricity and gas, telecommunications (Internet), as well as other supplies (water and discharge). The first thing that arises is the reduction of supply costs by optimizing the installation and contracting systems. We start from the data provided from the previous study on energy demand and the corresponding energy improvement and sustainability measures, in a public building of social housing in C / La María, in Seville. This study shows that it is possible to achieve energy self-sufficiency and improved comfort in an efficient and cost-effective way in the short term. Next, the reduction of costs by modifying the contracting systems and the study of the social bonuses offered by the different companies in the different supplies are studied. With the data obtained, it is proposed to create a “social bonus of services” where the total cost of them could be reduced from 80 to 90% of the current payment. Finally, it is proposed that the social bonus of services can have the same treatment as the rent, with a system of subsidy or bonus of the same depending on the family and income parameters of the tenants.

24. A closer look at NGC 7314 nuclear region: a multiwavelength analysis of the Seyfert nucleus and its surroundings.

Abstract

The central regions of galaxies harbouring active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be quite complex, especially at high activity, presenting, besides variability, a variety of phenomena related, e.g. to ionization/excitation mechanisms. A detailed study is necessary in order to understand better those objects. For that reason, we performed a multiwavelength analysis of the nuclear region of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7314, using an optical data cube obtained with the Integral Field Unit from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, together with Hubble Space Telescope images, X-ray data from the XMM–Newton and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and radio data from Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. The goals were to study the nuclear and circumnuclear emission, the emission of the AGN and the gas kinematics. The optical spectrum shows the emission of a Seyfert nucleus, with broad components in the H α and H β emission lines, characterising a type 1 AGN, with a spectrum rich in coronal emission lines. The spatial morphology of the [O  iii ] λ5007 suggests the presence of an ionization cone, west of the nucleus, meanwhile the east cone seems to be obscured by dust. An extended [Fe  vii ] λ6087 emission was also detected, which could be possibly explained by a scenario involving photoionization + shocks mechanisms. X-rays analyses showed that there are variations in the flux; however, we did not detect any variations in the column density along the line of sight. Its variability may be a consequence of changes in the AGN accretion rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Phaseolus vulgaris L. is widely studied for its bioactive compounds and nutritional properties while minimal attention has been given to P. lunatus L. or P. coccineus L. Here, a comparison of the phenolic compounds, minerals and antioxidant activity between landraces of P. lunatus and P. coccineus was made based on samples from populations cultivated by indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico and with reference to improved varieties of P. vulgaris. Methods: The phenolic compound contents and antioxidant activity in four samples of P. lunatus, four of P. coccineus and four improved varieties of P. vulgaris (control) were evaluated by spectrophotometry using reference standards. Through inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, the mineral macro- and microelements contents were determined. An interview face-to-face, a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the Short Form 36 (SF-36), and the Clinical Epidemiological Studies of Depression were applied. The catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene, especially the Val108/158Met polymorphism, has been associated with suicide; however, no conclusive outcome has been attained. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to assess the role of COMT Val108/158Met in suicidal behavior throughout an updated meta-analysis. Methods: We performed an online search using PubMed and Web of Science (up to March 2017). Our systematic review included case-control studies of individuals who attempted suicide and completed suicide. We tested allelic, homozygous, heterozygous, dominant, and recessive inheritance models. The meta-analysis was performed in accordance with the statement of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Results: The meta-analysis comprised 17 studies, which included 3,282 cases and 3,774 controls, and showed that when evaluating the overall population, the Val108/158Met polymorphism of COMT was not associated with suicidal behavior in any of the inheritance models; however, the subanalyses showed that this polymorphism exhibits a risk factor in males and a protective effect in females. Additionally, it conveyed a risk factor in Asian populations when using the allelic (OR 1.25; CI: 1.04–1.51) and recessive models (OR 1.32; CI: 1.03–1.68). Conclusion: Our updated meta-analysis suggests a possible association between COMT Val108/158Met and suicidal behavior in Asian populations. However, in view of the small number of studies, these results should be considered exploratory. We recommend that more studies be performed with larger samples. Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to assess fattening efficiency changes in grazing bulls, using panel data envelop analysis in two periods of time. The panel data were compiled by DEAP 2.1, which included the results of a 3-year period from 38 private farms (beef farms) in cooperatives of credits and services. The farms were on prairie savannahs, located on 21.4831 latitude, and -77.3174 longitude, less than 300 meters above sea level, province of Camagüey, mideastern Cuba. The output variable was total sold kg (TSKG), and the input variables were cost of Norgold (CN), fuel kg per ha (FKGXHA), fuel kg per livestock unit (FKGXLU), and unit of human labor force (UHL), which were highly correlated to the output variable. Table 2 shows that technical efficiency (TE), pure efficiency (PEC), and scale sufficiency (SEC), underwent 0.2%, 0.4, and 0.5%, respectively, by the third year of fattening. Technological change (TC) between the second and third years rose to almost 14%, and the total productivity factor (TPF) spiked as farmers became more skilled and experienced, with a 4.9% increase in comparison to the first year, and 13.7% in the second year.

Abstract

El objetivo del presente trabajo fue valorar los cambios de eficiencia en la ceba de toros en pastoreo mediante el método de análisis envolvente de datos de panel en dos periodos de tiempo. Los datos de panel fueron elaborados en el programa DEAP 2.1 con la inclusión de 3 años de resultados de 38 granjas (unidades de producción de carne bovina) pertenecientes a cooperativas de crédito y servicio integradas por campesinos privados, de la provincia de Camagüey, Cuba. Se utilizó como variable de salida: kilogramos totales vendidos, (KGTV) y como variables de entrada: costo del Northgold, (CN), kg de combustible por ha, (KGCXHA), kg de combustible por unidades de ganado mayor, (KGCXUGM) y unidades de trabajo humano (UTH), las mismas que denotaron altas correlaciones con la variable de salida. Se observó que la eficiencia técnica, EC, la eficiencia pura, PEC, y la eficiencia de escala, SEC, disminuyeron para el tercer año de experiencia de ceba en un 0,2 %, 0,4 % y 0,5 %. El cambio tecnológico, TC, del segundo al tercer año, incrementó a casi el 14 % y el factor de productividad total, TFPC, incrementó marcadamente, en la medida que los productores adquirieron mayores habilidades y experiencias, el aumento fue del 4,9 % respecto al primer año, cuando se inició la operación y del 13,7 % en relación al segundo año.

Subjects and methods: A total of 183 suicide attempters and 208 healthy volunteers were included in this study. We genotyped five polymorphisms of HTR2C (rs547536, rs2192372, rs4272555, rs6318, and rs2428707), then measured the association by genotype, allele, and haplotype. Results: In the female group, we found an association between two polymorphisms of the HTR2C (rs4272555 and rs2428707) and suicide attempts. The C allele of the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs4272555 was associated with a decreased risk of suicide attempt (P=0.01, odds ratio =0.26, 95% confidence interval: 0.09–0.79), whereas the G allele of the SNP rs2428707 was associated with an increased risk of suicide attempt (P=0.01, odds ratio =3.68, 95% confidence interval: 1.24–10.90). No significant association was observed between the other polymorphisms studied (rs547536, rs2192372, rs6318) or haplotypes with suicide attempts. Conclusion: These findings suggest a possible risk factor of the HTR2C gene in the pathology of suicidal behavior in Mexican population. More studies are necessary to confirm this association. Abstract

According to theory, the torus of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is sustained from a wind coming off the accretion disc, and for low efficient AGN, it has been proposed that such structure disappears. However, the exact conditions for its disappearance remain unclear. This can be studied throughout the reflection component at X-rays, which is associated with distant and neutral material at the inner walls of the torus in obscured AGN. We select a sample of 81 AGNs observed with NuSTAR with a distance limit of D< 200 Mpc and Eddington rate |$\rm {\lambda _{Edd} \equiv L_{bol}/L_{Edd}\lt 10^{-3}}$|⁠. We fit the 3–70 keV spectra using a model accounting for a partial-covering absorber plus a reflection component from neutral material. We find that the existence of the reflection component spans in a wide range of black hole mass and bolometric luminosities, with only ∼13 per cent of our sample (11 sources) lacking of any reflection signatures. These sources fall in the region in which the torus may be lacking in the L-MBH diagram. For the sources with a detected reflection component, we find that the vast majority of them are highly obscured (⁠|$\rm {\log \ N_H \gt 23}$|⁠), with |$\rm {\sim 20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}}$| being Compton-thick. We also find an increase in the number of unobscured sources and a tentative increase on the ratio between |$\rm {FeK\alpha }$| emission line and Compton-hump luminosities toward |$\rm {\lambda _{Edd}=10^{-5}}$|⁠ , suggesting that the contribution of the |$\rm {FeK\alpha }$| line changes with Eddington ratio.
