Abstract

The electron temperature fluctuation-induced dynamo electric field has been measured in the core of high-temperature EAST tokamak plasmas by Faraday-effect polarimetry and electron cyclotron emission. It is found that a dynamo electric field primarily arises from the coherent interaction between radial magnetic-field fluctuations and electron temperature fluctuations associated with the internal kink instability, acting to self-regulate the current profile to prevent sawtooth magnetic reconnection.

Abstract

DIII-D research is addressing critical challenges in preparation for ITER and the next generation of fusion devices through focusing on plasma physics fundamentals that underpin key fusion goals, understanding the interaction of disparate core and boundary plasma physics, and developing integrated scenarios for achieving high performance fusion regimes. Fundamental investigations into fusion energy science find that anomalous dissipation of runaway electrons (RE) that arise following a disruption is likely due to interactions with RE-driven kinetic instabilities, some of which have been directly observed, opening a new avenue for RE energy dissipation using naturally excited waves. Dimensionless parameter scaling of intrinsic rotation and gyrokinetic simulations give a predicted ITER rotation profile with significant turbulence stabilization. Coherence imaging spectroscopy confirms near sonic flow throughout the divertor towards the target, which may account for the convection-dominated parallel heat flux. Core-boundary integration studies show that the small angle slot divertor achieves detachment at lower density and extends plasma cooling across the divertor target plate, which is essential for controlling heat flux and erosion. The Super H-mode regime has been extended to high plasma current (2.0 MA) and density to achieve very high pedestal pressures (~30 kPa) and stored energy (3.2 MJ) with H 98y2 ≈ 1.6–2.4. In scenario work, the ITER baseline Q = 10 scenario with zero injected torque is found to have a fusion gain metric independent of current between q 95 = 2.8–3.7, and a lower limit of pedestal rotation for RMP ELM suppression has been found. In the wide pedestal QH-mode regime that exhibits improved performance and no ELMs, the start-up counter torque has been eliminated so that the entire discharge uses ≈0 injected torque and the operating space is more ITER-relevant. Finally, the high- (⩽3.8) hybrid scenario has been extended to the high-density levels necessary for radiating divertor operation, achieving ~40% divertor heat flux reduction using either argon or neon with P tot up to 15 MW.

Abstract

We report the first direct measurement of the internal magnetic field structure associated with a 3D helical equilibrium generated spontaneously in the core of an axisymmetric, magnetically-confined, toroidal plasma. Magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium bifurcation occurs in MST RFP plasmas when the innermost resonant magnetic perturbation grows to large amplitude, reaching up to 8{\%} of the mean field strength. Evolution of the magnetic topology is determined by measuring the Faraday effect, revealing that as the perturbation grows, toroidal symmetry is broken, and a helical equilibrium is established. Computational reconstruction of the magnetic field and electron density profiles based on a 3D topology agrees well with experimental data, providing a better fit than reconstructions based on a standard 2D cylindrical topology. These helical plasmas sometimes exhibit an improvement in electron particle confinement and increased temperature.

In the general area of confinement improvement and concept advancement, recent results in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) reversed-field pinch (RFP) include good confinement of both thermal and large-orbit ions and near doubling of total beta to 26% with deuterium pellet injection. Current profile control enables MST to reduce stochastic transport and achieve tokamak-like confinement. In standard RFP operation, substantial MHD tearing mode activity results in stochastic transport and an energy confinement time of about 1 ms in MST. Application of inductive current profile control reduces MHD activity and accompanying stochasticity, improving confinement by about a factor of ten. Previous work concentrated on electron confinement in improved-confinement RFP operation. Recent work confirms that ions are also well confined, and that high beta and improved confinement can be achieved simultaneously. Abstract

Generation and sustainment of the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration normally relies on dynamo activity. The externally applied electric field tends to drive the equilibrium away from the relaxed, minimum energy state which is roughly described by a flat normalized parallel current density profile and is at marginal stability to tearing modes. Correlated fluctuations of magnetic field and velocity create a dynamo electric field which broadens the parallel current density profile, supplying the necessary edge current drive. These pervasive magnetic fluctuations are also responsible for destruction of flux surfaces, relegating the standard RFP to a stochastic-magnetic transport-limited device. Application of a tailored electric field profile (which matches the relaxed current density profile) allows sustainment of the RFP configuration without dynamo-driven edge current. The method used to ascertain that a dynamo-free RFP plasma has been created is reported here in detail. Several confinement improvements during the accompanying periods of low magnetic fluctuations are observed. Namely, the magnetic fluctuation level is reduced to the point where stochastic-magnetic transport is no longer the dominant process in the core and nested flux surfaces are restored in the core of the dynamo-free RFP. Abstract

Reduction of core-resonant m=1 magnetic fluctuations and improved confinement in the Madison Symmetric Torus [Dexter , Fusion Technol. 19, 131 (1991)] reversed-field pinch have been routinely achieved through control of the surface poloidal electric field, but it is now known that the achieved confinement has been limited in part by edge-resonant m=0 magnetic fluctuations. Now, through refined poloidal electric field control, plus control of the toroidal electric field, it is possible to reduce simultaneously the m=0 and m=1 fluctuations. This has allowed confinement of high-energy runaway electrons, possibly indicative of flux-surface restoration in the usually stochastic plasma core. The electron temperature profile steepens in the outer region of the plasma, and the central electron temperature increases substantially, reaching nearly 1.3 keV at high toroidal plasma current (500 kA). At low current (200 kA), the total beta reaches 15% with an estimated energy confinement time of 10 ms, a tenfold increase over the standard value which for the first time substantially exceeds the constant-beta confinement scaling that has characterized most reversed-field-pinch plasmas. Abstract

Electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECE imaging or ECEI) is a novel plasma diagnostic technique for the study of electron temperature profiles and fluctuations in magnetic fusion plasma devices. Instead of a single receiver located in the tokamak midplane as in conventional ECE radiometers, ECEI systems utilize large diameter imaging optics coupled with planar millimeter-wave imaging arrays to form multichannel ECE diagnostics with excellent spatial resolution. Combined with specially designed imaging optics, the use of these compact, low cost arrays has resulted in the excellent spatial resolution of the ECEI systems, the unique capability of two-dimensional measurements, and flexibility in the measurement of plasma fluctuations. Technical details and principles of this emerging diagnostic technique are described in this article. Abstract

A novel high resolution, two-dimensional (2-D) plasma diagnostic technique, electron cyclotron emission imaging, is reviewed. Its high spatial and temporal resolution is illustrated from the measurement of small-scale structure in T-e profiles. Its 2-D measurement capability has been utilized to "visualize" plasma turbulence structures in the Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project (RTP) [Hogeweij , Phys. Scr. 51, 627 (1995)]. Comprehensive experimental results of T-e fluctuations in RTP are presented. Possible correlation between the characteristics of the measured T-e fluctuations and eta (i) mode theory predictions are indicated, which calls for further theoretical and experimental investigation. Abstract

A comprehensive understanding of the impact of the Cotton–Mouton effect on Faraday polarimetry measurements using counter-rotating circular polarization (CP) probe beams has been developed. By using the Jones theory, an analytic study shows that the Cotton–Mouton effect cancels to first order with coupling into the Faraday measurement only at higher orders. A Jones-based numerical study shows the coupling effect strongly depends on the Cotton–Mouton effect, Faraday effect, and wavelength chosen for the measurement. For realistic DIII-D plasma conditions and far-infrared wavelength, numerical calculation suggests the measurement is dominated by the Faraday effect while the coupling effect leads to a small but finite correction. By statistical comparison between the experimental measurement and the Jones-based numerical calculation under various plasma parameters, the impact of the Cotton–Mouton effect has been verified. Proper treatment of the coupling effect is essential in the data analysis under certain conditions for polarimetric measurement using CP in present devices and beyond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A full-scale 120 m path length ITER toroidal interferometer and polarimeter (TIP) prototype, including an active feedback alignment system, has been constructed and undergone initial testing at General Atomics. In the TIP prototype, two-color interferometry is carried out at 10.59 μm and 5.22 μm using a CO2 and quantum cascade laser (QCL) respectively while a separate polarimetry measurement of the plasma induced Faraday effect is made at 10.59 μm. The polarimeter system uses co-linear right and left-hand circularly polarized beams upshifted by 40 and 44 MHz acousto-optic cells respectively, to generate the necessary beat signal for heterodyne phase detection, while interferometry measurements are carried out at both 40 MHz and 44 MHz for the CO2 laser and 40 MHz for the QCL. The high-resolution phase information is obtained using an all-digital FPGA based phase demodulation scheme and precision clock source. The TIP prototype is equipped with a piezo tip/tilt stage active feedback alignment system responsible for minimizing noise in the measurement and keeping the TIP diagnostic aligned indefinitely on its 120 m beam path including as the ITER vessel is brought from ambient to operating temperatures. The prototype beam path incorporates translation stages to simulate ITER motion through a bake cycle as well as other sources of motion or misalignment. Even in the presence of significant motion, the TIP prototype is able to meet ITER’s density measurement requirements over 1000 s shot durations with demonstrated phase resolution of 0.06° and 1.5° for the polarimeter and vibration compensated interferometer respectively. TIP vibration compensated interferometer measurements of a plasma have also been made in a pulsed radio frequency device and show a line-integrated density resolution of m−2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Tearing mode stability analysis in the presence of circulating energetic ions (CEI) is studied in the reversed field pinch (RFP) magnetic configuration. In contrast to the minimal effect of precessional drift of CEI on tearing modes in tokamaks, the effect of precessional drift of CEI on tearing modes is important in the RFP. It is found that the effects of CEI on tearing modes in RFP depend on their toroidal circulating direction, and have a strong relation to the pressure gradient of CEI. For co-CEI, tearing modes can be stabilized if the pressure gradient of energetic ions is sufficiently large, which is qualitatively consistent with experimental results in the Madison Symmetric Torus.
