Ditch cleaning (DC) is increasingly applied to facilitate forest regeneration following clear-cutting in Fennoscandinavia. However, its impact on the ecosystem carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) balances is poorly understood. We conducted chamber measurements to assess the initial DC effects on carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes in a recent forest clear-cut on wet mineral soil in boreal Sweden. Measurements were conducted in two adjacent areas over two pre-treatments (2018/19) and two years (2020/21) after conducting DC in one area. We further assessed the spatial variation of fluxes at three distances (4, 20, 40 m) from ditches. We found that DC lowered the water table level by 12 ± 2 cm (mean ± standard error) and topsoil moisture by 0.12 ± 0.01 m3 m−3. DC had a limited initial effect on the net CO2 exchange and its component fluxes. CH4 emissions were low during the dry pre-treatment years but increased particularly in the control area during the wet years of 2020/21. Distance to ditch had no consistent effects on CO2 and CH4 fluxes. Model extrapolations suggest that annual carbon emissions decreased over the four years from 6.7 ± 1.4 to 1.6 ± 1.6 t-C ha−1 year−1, without treatment differences. Annual CH4 emissions contributed <2.5% to the carbon balance but constituted 39% of the GHG balance in the control area during 2021. Even-aged management (rotation forestry, RF) involves ditch network maintenance (DNM) operations in peatlands. Although the DNM operations contribute tree growth, they have negative environmental effects on watercources. To avoid DNM, a strip cutting (SC) management has been proposed. SC management in peatlands relies on natural regeneration by trees growing on the edge stand next to a clear-cut strip. The width of a cut strip varies, and here 20, 35 and 50 m strip width were applied in three locations in Finland: Akaa (southern), Kuopio (central), and Oulu (northern Finland). Tree growth of an edge stand and sapling stand was modeled with a stand-level model which accounted for the effect of dominant height of the edge stand and variation of shading among alternative strip widths. In southern location, RF financially outperformed SC management with interest rates 2–4%, but with a 5% interest rate and strip with of 35 or 50 m SC management was more beneficial than RF. In central and northern locations RF was better only with a 2% interest rate and with a 20 m strip width. Our results demonstrate that SC management is a financially valid option to apply in pine-dominated peatlands, particularly in northern regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In drained forest sites, ditch cleaning (DC) may be needed to restore the drainage function of ditches and maintain favourable growing conditions. The main aims of this study were (i) to estimate the growth responses of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst) stands following DC, and (ii) to test the hypothesis that stand stocking should be less than 150 m3 ha−1 at DC to obtain a growth response. This survey included 14 ditched stands in Sweden on both mineral and peat soils. The methodology was based on evaluating growth rates before and after the DC operation (growth ratio), reconstructing the growth by taking increment cores from the tree trunks. The measured growth was related to growth derived using a growth simulator as if DC had not been conducted. The results showed an average growth increase of 1.6 m3 ha−1 yr−1 for about 25 years after DC in the stands containing 50–200 m3 ha−1. The growth response appeared to be positively related to stand age, trees ha−1 and site index, and negatively related to stand volume, supporting the hypothesis that stand stocking is an important factor to consider when assessing the need for DC. Peatland forest management is an important source of human-induced additional nitrogen, phosphorus, and organic carbon loads to surface waters in Finland. Ditch network maintenance (DNM) is typically used to ensure sufficient soil drainage for profitable timber production on peatland sites, but nutrient mobilization, particularly of phosphorus, and suspended sediment loads from ditches can cause harmful ecological effects on the quality of water courses. Various water protection structures have been developed to capture the loads released after treatments and to decrease the management impacts in forestry. Overland flow fields are efficient mechanisms for water purification, but they are rarely used in practice due to difficulties in finding suitable locations. In addition, leaving breaks between cleaned ditch sections is recommended wherever possible, as uncleaned sections decrease flow velocity and enhance sediment deposition from runoff water. To plan the most adequate protection methods in DNM, new GIS-based tools are needed to propose e.g. appropriate locations for water protection structures. We developed a spatial analysis to suggest locations for overland flow fields and uncleaned ditch sections within the catchment of lake Kovesjärvi (Parkano, Western Finland). Airborne lidar data consisting of 5 pulses m−2 enabled detailed terrain analysis and finding strictly specified terrain properties that satisfied the conditions of the water protection structures. Half of the field-reviewed overland flow fields were evaluated as good suggestions by forest management professionals and researchers. The model for uncleaned ditch sections worked well on the relatively flat study area, as 77% of the field-reviewed suggestions were rated good by expert opinions. Overall, the approach was evaluated to be useful in peatland forest management. Ditch network maintenance in drained peatland forests increases sediment load and causes harmful effects on downstream watercourses. The objective of this study was to identify the immediate erosion processes in the ditch network and quantify the impact of the ditch network maintenance on suspended solids (SS) load at the catchment outlet. Ditch level processes were measured by conducting field campaigns and catchment-level responses were obtained by using the paired catchment approach. Measurements were conducted at two nested catchments in Koivupuro, Eastern Finland, where runoff and turbidity were monitored continuously at the catchment outlets and erosion and deposition were measured in selected ditches with a pin meter, erosion pins and sediment collectors. According to the results, the sediment load was at its highest during the first year after the ditch network maintenance and especially high during the first spring snow-melt period. Pin-meter measurements, sediment-collector data and results of ditch-bed erosion pins showed that the erosion was more severe in the ditch cut into mineral subsoil than in the ditch cut into thick peat. The SS load from the whole Koivupuro catchment during the first year after the ditch network maintenance was, depending on the estimation method, 185 or 250 kg treated-ha −1 a −1 (0.56 or 0.75 kg ditch-m −1 ), while the net erosion within the ditch network was much higher, 6300 kg treated-ha −1 a −1 (19 kg ditch-m −1 ), indicating that suspended solids were deposited before reaching the outlet of the catchment. Compared to the earlier studies which have focused on the catchment-level effects of ditch network maintenance on the SS loads, the current study succeeded in showing erosion processes and their variability within the ditch network and provided information for improving water protection during ditch network maintenance. In boreal-drained peatland forests, tree growth is retarded by the gradual deterioration of drainage ditch networks. In order to avoid the development of suboptimal growth conditions, ditch network maintenance (DNM) operations (ditch cleaning and/or complementary ditching) are annually conducted on an area of about 70,000 ha in Finland. The previous studies indicate that the depth of the water table prior to DNM may influence the magnitude of the growth response to DNM. Tree growth does not necessarily increase after DNM at sites with large stand volume and subsequent low water levels due to tree stand evapotranspiration. We investigated how the pre-treatment water table depth (pre-WTD) in late summer relates to the growth of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands after the DNM operation in 12 field experiments. The increase in mean annual volume growth caused by DNM was negatively related to the pre-WTD, with the highest growth response in stands where the pre-WTD was less than 25–30 cm. DNM did not clearly increase stand growth in sites where the pre-WTD was more than 35–40 cm below the soil surface. There was a high variation in growth response to DNM between the water levels from 20 to 35 cm below the soil surface, indicating that factors other than water table depth are also needed as decision criteria for assessing the appropriate timing of ditch network maintenance. In drained, forested peatlands, ditch network maintenance (DNM) is often considered necessary for tree growth, but it also constitutes additional management costs. Commercial thinnings, in turn, in addition to their silvicultural benefits, are generally applied to enhance the financial performance of stand management but results from peatland stands are scarce. In this study, our aim was to find financially feasible management practices for Scots pine-dominated stands on drained peatland sites in Finland. Using mainly inventory data sets, we compiled altogether 29 typical model-stands for four climatic areas, four site types, and two stand conditions according to need for silvicultural care. We used MOTTI stand simulator to predict the development of the model-stands according to different management regimes consisting of various combinations of 0-2 DNM and 0-2 thinnings with different timings and thinning intensities. We then calculated and compared the financial feasibility of the regimes using net present value (NPV; discount rate 3%) analysis. The separate effect of DNM on the profitability was marginal, but the positive effect of thinnings was clear. The harvesting removals varied within a wide range, depending on the timing and intensity of thinnings, but on average, the NPV doubled due to the thinnings. In the stands of initially good silvicultural condition, regimes including only one thinning and a DNM operation generally displayed a good financial result. In the stands of initially poor silvicultural condition due to neglected early care, regimes with two thinnings produced the best NPV regardless of the often low-yielding first thinning.
