Abstract

Rotating Radio Transients (RRATs) are neutron stars that emit sporadic radio bursts. We detected 1955 single pulses from RRAT J1913+1330 using the 19-beam receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). These pulses were detected in 19 distinct clusters, with 49.4% of them occurring sequentially with a waiting time of one rotation period. The energy distribution of these individual pulses exhibited a wide range, spanning three orders of magnitude, reminiscent of repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs). Furthermore, we observed abrupt variations in pulse profile, width, peak flux, and fluence between adjacent sequential pulses. These findings suggest that this RRAT could be interpreted as pulsars with extreme pulse-to-pulse modulation. The presence of sequential pulse trains during active phases, along with significant pulse variations in profile, fluence, flux, and width, should be intrinsic to a subset of RRATs. Our results indicate that J1913+1330 represents a peculiar source that shares certain properties with populations of nulling pulsars, giant pulses, and FRBs from different perspectives. The dramatic pulse-to-pulse variation observed in J1913+1330 could be attributed to unstable pair creation above the polar cap region and the variation of the site where streaming pairs emit coherently. Exploring a larger sample of RRATs exhibiting similar properties to J1913+1330 has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of pulsars, RRATs, and FRBs., 12 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, luminous pulses with unknown physical origin. The repetition pattern of FRBs contains essential information about their physical nature and emission mechanisms. Using the two largest samples of FRB 20121102A and FRB 20201124, we report that the sources of the two FRBs reveal memory over a large range of timescales, from a few minutes to about an hour. The memory is detected from the coherent growths in burst-rate structures and the Hurst exponent. The waiting time distribution displays a power-law tail, which is consistent with a Poisson model with a time-varying rate. From cellular automaton simulations, we find that these characteristics can be well understood within the physical framework of a self-organized criticality system driven in a correlation way, such as random walk functions. Abstract

Recent observations discovered that some repeating fast radio bursts (FRBs) show complicated variations and reversals of Faraday rotation measures (RMs), indicating that the sources of these FRBs are embedded in a dynamically magnetized environment. One possible scenario is that repeating FRBs are generated by pulsars in binary systems, especially containing a high-mass companion with strong stellar outflows. Here, we study the RM variations caused by stellar winds, and a possible stellar disc. If the magnetic field is radial in the stellar wind, RM will not reverse except if the magnetic axis inclination angle is close to $90 ^\circ$. For the toroidal magnetic field in the wind, RM will reverse at the super conjunction. For the case of the toroidal field in the disc, the RM variations may have a multimodal and multiple reversal profile because the radio signals travel through different components of the disc during periastron passage. We also apply this model to FRB 20180916B. By assuming its 16.35-day period is from a slowly rotating or freely precessing magnetar, we find that the secular RM variation can be explained by the periastron passage of a magnetar in a massive binary system. In addition, the clumps in the stellar wind and disc can cause short time-scale ($< 1$ day) variations or reversals of RM. Abstract

Trehalose is a nonreducing disaccharide that is involved in the regulation of plant responses to a variety of environmental stresses. Trehalose 6-phosphate synthase (TPS) and trehalose 6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) are two key enzymes in trehalose synthesis and they are widely distributed in higher plants. At present, TPS family genes have been systematically identified and analyzed in many plant species, but the TPP family genes have been rarely studied. In this study, ten TPS and six TPP genes in cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) were identified at the genomic level. The phylogenetic tree of TPS and TPP family members in cannabis, Arabidopsis, and rice was constructed, and all the genes were divided into three subgroups: Class I, Class II, and Class III. The number of exons and motif types among Class I members was exactly the same, as were Class II members, but the gene structure and motif types of Class III members were slightly different. There were four pairs of CsTPSs and CsTPPs that had gene duplication, indicating that gene duplication events played an important role in the amplification of TPS and TPP families in cannabis. The results of expression analysis under abiotic stresses showed that 68.75 % of CsTPS and CsTPP genes were significantly induced by at least one abiotic stress. Among these genes, the expression of CsTPS1, CsTPS9, and CsTPPA was highest under at least one abiotic stress. These three genes may play a key role in abiotic stress responses. Most of the CsTPS and CsTPP genes that are closely located in the evolutionary tree have the same or similar functions. Abstract

eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary goals are the determination of the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, the measurement of QED effects in highly magnetized star, and the study of accretion in the strong-field regime of gravity. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of approx. 0.9 m(exp. 2) and 0.6 m(exp. 2) at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering less than 180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of approx. 3.4 m(exp. 2), between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution better than 250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm(exp. 2) at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees field of view. The eXTP international consortium includes major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. The strong European participation has significantly enhanced the scientific capabilities of eXTP. The planned launch date of the mission is earlier than 2025.

Abstract

In this paper, we report the detection and follow-ups of a super stellar flare GWAC\,181229A with an amplitude of $\Delta R\sim$9.5 mag on a M9 type star by $\text{SVOM/GWAC}$ and the dedicated follow-up telescopes. The estimated bolometric energy $E_{bol}$ is $(5.56-9.25)\times10^{34}$ ergs, which places the event to be one of the most powerful flares on ultracool stars. The magnetic strength is inferred to be (3.6-4.7) kG. Thanks to the sampling with a cadence of 15 seconds, a new component near the peak time with a very steep decay is detected in the $R$-band light curve, followed by the two-component flare template given by Davenport et al. (2014). An effective temperature of $5340\pm40$ K is measured by a blackbody shape fitting to the spectrum at the shallower phase during the flare. The filling factors of the flare are estimated to be $\sim$30\% and 19\% at the peak time and at 54 min after the first detection. The detection of the particular event with large amplitude, huge-emitted energy and a new component demonstrates that a high cadence sky monitoring cooperating with fast follow-up observations is very essential for understanding the violent magnetic activity., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables, accepted by ApJ

Abstract

Habitability of an exoplanet is believed to be profoundly affected by activities of the host stars, although the related coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are still rarely detected in solar-like and late-type stars. We here report an observational study on the flares of two M dwarfs triggered by the high-cadence survey performed by the Ground-based Wide Angle Camera system. In both events, the fast, time-resolved spectroscopy enables us to identify symmetric broad H α emission with not only a nearly zero bulk velocity, but also a large projected maximum velocity as high as ∼700â€"800 km sâˆ'1. This broadening could be resulted from either the Stark (pressure) effect or a flaring-associated CME at the stellar limb. In the context of the CME scenario, the CME mass is estimated to be ∼4 Ă— 1018 and 2 Ă— 1019 g. In addition, our spectral analysis reveals a temporal variation of the line center of the narrow H α emission in both events. The variation amplitudes are at tens of kilometers per second, which could be ascribed to the chromospheric evaporation in one event, and to a binary scenario in the other one. With the total flaring energy determined from our photometric monitor, we show a reinforced trend in which the larger the flaring energy, the higher the CME mass is. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Broad-band emission from a kilonova ejecta-pulsar wind Nebula system: late-time X-ray afterglow rebrightening of GRB 170817A.

Abstract

We study the broad-band radiation behaviour of a kilonova ejecta-pulsar wind nebula (PWN) system. In this model, we jointly fit the observations of AT 2017gfo in UV-optical-IR bands and the late-time X-ray afterglow of GRB 170817A. Our work shows that a PWN powered by the remnant neutron star (NS) post GW170817 event could affect the optical transient AT 2017gfo and re-brighten the late-time X-ray afterglow of GRB 170817A. The PWN radiation will regulate the trend of future X-ray observations from a flattening to a steep decline until some other sources (e.g. a kilonova afterglow) become dominant. The restricted ranges of the central NS parameters in this work are consistent with the previous works based on the observations of AT 2017gfo only. In addition, the new fitting result indicates that the NS wind is highly magnetized. We point out that the radio and X-ray emission from a kilonova ejecta-PWN system could be an important electromagnetic feature of binary NS mergers when a long-lived remnant NS is formed. Therefore, observations of a kilonova ejecta-PWN system will provide important information to inferring the nature of a merger remnant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to cover a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for gamma-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, a half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the pipeline of KM2A data analysis and the first observation on the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. We detect gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10$-$100 TeV and $>$100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE =(1.13$\pm$0.05$_{stat}$$\pm$0.08$_{sys}$)$\times$10$^{-14}$$\cdot$(E/20TeV)$^{-3.09\pm0.06_{stat}\pm0.02_{sys}}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$. It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. 33. Probing Pre-Galactic Metal Enrichment with High-Redshift Gamma-Ray Bursts

Abstract

We explore high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as promising tools to probe pre-galactic metal enrichment. We utilize the bright afterglow of a Population III (Pop III) GRB exploding in a primordial dwarf galaxy as a luminous background source, and calculate the strength of metal absorption lines that are imprinted by the first heavy elements in the intergalactic medium (IGM). To derive the GRB absorption line diagnostics, we use an existing highly resolved simulation of the formation of a first galaxy which is characterized by the onset of atomic hydrogen cooling in a halo with virial temperature approximately greater than10(exp 4) K.We explore the unusual circumburst environment inside the systems that hosted Pop III stars, modeling the density evolution with the self-similar solution for a champagne flow. For minihalos close to the cooling threshold, the circumburst density is roughly proportional to (1 + z) with values of about a few cm(exp −3). In more massive halos, corresponding to the first galaxies, the density may be larger, n approximately greater than100 cm(exp −3). The resulting afterglow fluxes are weakly dependent on redshift at a fixed observed time, and may be detectable with the James Webb Space Telescope and Very Large Array in the near-IR and radio wavebands, respectively, out to redshift z approximately greater than 20. We predict that the maximum of the afterglow emission shifts from near-IR to millimeter bands with peak fluxes from mJy to Jy at different observed times. The metal absorption line signature is expected to be detectable in the near future. GRBs are ideal tools for probing the metal enrichment in the early IGM, due to their high luminosities and featureless power-law spectra. The metals in the first galaxies produced by the first supernova (SN) explosions are likely to reside in low-ionization stages (C II, O I, Si II and Fe II). We show that, if the afterglow can be observed sufficiently early, analysis of the metal lines may distinguish whether the first heavy elements were produced in a pair-instability supernova or a core-collapse (Type II) SN, thus constraining the initial mass function of the first stars.

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous explosions in and can be detectable out to the edge of the universe. They have long been thought to be able to extend the Hubble diagram to very high redshifts. Several correlations between temporal or spectral properties and GRB luminosities have been proposed to make GRBs cosmological tools. However, those correlations cannot be properly standardized. In this paper, we select a long-GRB sample with X-ray plateau phases produced by electromagnetic dipole emissions from central newborn magnetars. A tight correlation is found between the plateau luminosity and the end time of the plateau in the X-ray afterglows out to the redshift z = 5.91. We standardize these long-GRB X-ray light curves to a universal behavior through this correlation, with a luminosity dispersion of 0.5 dex. The derived distance–redshift relation of GRBs is in agreement with the standard ΛCDM model both at low and high redshifts. The evidence for an accelerating universe from this GRB sample is 3σ, which is the highest statistical significance from GRBs to date. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Trehalose is a nonreducing disaccharide that is involved in the regulation of plant responses to a variety of environmental stresses. Trehalose 6-phosphate synthase (TPS) and trehalose 6-phosphate phosphatase (TPP) are two key enzymes in trehalose synthesis and they are widely distributed in higher plants. At present, TPS family genes have been systematically identified and analyzed in many plant species, but the TPP family genes have been rarely studied. In this study, ten TPS and six TPP genes in cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) were identified at the genomic level. The phylogenetic tree of TPS and TPP family members in cannabis, Arabidopsis, and rice was constructed, and all the genes were divided into three subgroups: Class I, Class II, and Class III. The number of exons and motif types among Class I members was exactly the same, as were Class II members, but the gene structure and motif types of Class III members were slightly different. There were four pairs of CsTPSs and CsTPPs that had gene duplication, indicating that gene duplication events played an important role in the amplification of TPS and TPP families in cannabis. The results of expression analysis under abiotic stresses showed that 68.75 % of CsTPS and CsTPP genes were significantly induced by at least one abiotic stress. Among these genes, the expression of CsTPS1, CsTPS9, and CsTPPA was highest under at least one abiotic stress. These three genes may play a key role in abiotic stress responses. Most of the CsTPS and CsTPP genes that are closely located in the evolutionary tree have the same or similar functions. Abstract

We report our photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of the superoutbursts of three dwarf novae (GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A) identified independently by the Ground Wide-angle Cameras system, one of the ground-based instruments of the China-France SVOM mission. Based on a combination of our photometry and that taken from the AAVSO, our period analysis of the superhumps enables us to determine the mass ratios to be 0.0967-0.1163, 0.1879-0.1883 and 0.0981-0.1173 for GWAC\,180415A, GWAC\,181017A and GWAC\,181211A, respectively. GWAC\,180415A can be firmly identified as a WZ sge-type dwarf novae due to its long duration ($\sim2$ weeks) multiple rebrightenings with amplitudes of 3-4 magnitudes, the early superhump associated with a double-wave modulation and the low mass ratio. The inferred low mass ratio and location in the $\varepsilon-P_{\mathrm{orb}}$ diagram suggest that GWAC\,181211A is a WZ sge-type dwarf novae candidate. The measured Balmer decrements suggest the Balmer line emission is produced from an optical thick region in GWAC\,180415A and GWAC\,181017A, and from an optical thin region in GWAC\,181211A., 15 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables, to appear in AJ

Abstract

The spectral and temporal properties of the nonthermal emission of the nearby XRF 060218 in the 0.3-150 keV band are studied. We show that both the spectral energy distribution and the light-curve properties suggest the same origin of the nonthermal emission detected by Swift BAT and XRT. This event has the longest pulse duration and spectral lag observed to date among the known GRBs. The pulse structure and its energy dependence are analogous to typical GRBs,. By extrapolating the observed spectral lag to the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) BATSE bands we find that the hypothesis that this event complies with the same luminosity-lag relation with bright GRBs cannot be ruled out at 2 sigma significance level. These intriguing facts, along with its compliance with the Amati relation, indicate that XRF 060218 shares the similar radiation physics as typical GRBs.

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), as a possible probe to extend the Hubble diagram to high redshifts, have attracted much attention recently. In this paper, we select two samples of GRBs that have a plateau phase in X-ray afterglow. One is short GRBs (SGRBs) with plateau phases dominated by magnetic dipole (MD) radiations. The other is long GRBs (LGRBs) with gravitational wave (GW) dominated plateau phases. These GRBs can be well standardized using the correlation between the plateau luminosity L 0 and the end time of plateau tb. The so-called circularity problem is mitigated by using the observational Hubble parameter data and Gaussian process method. The calibrated L 0 – t b correlations are also used to constrain Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) and w (z) = w 0 models. Combining the MD–LGRBs sample from Wang et al. (2021) and the MD–SGRBs sample, we find |$\Omega _{\mathrm{ m}} = 0.33_{-0.09}^{+0.06}$| and ΩΛ = |$1.06_{-0.34}^{+0.15}$| excluding systematic uncertainties in the non-flat ΛCDM model. Adding Type Ia supernovae from Pantheon sample, the best-fitting results are w 0 = |$-1.11_{-0.15}^{+0.11}$| and Ωm = |$0.34_{-0.04}^{+0.05}$| in the w = w 0 model. These results are in agreement with the ΛCDM model. Our result supports that selection of GRBs from the same physical mechanism is crucial for cosmological purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Because mergers of black hole–neutron star (BH–NS) binaries are widely argued to produce both gravitational and electromagnetic waves, these binaries are among the most attractive systems in the era of multi-messenger astronomy. In this paper we explore the charging processes of a moving BH in two types of charged surroundings and propose a new charging scenario differing from the elegant mechanism of Wald. During the inspiral of such a binary, the NS is strongly magnetized and the BH is moving inward. By considering this moving BH charging scenario, we find that the BH will increasingly accumulate enough net charge to light up the binary system at the inspiral stage. This charging process is universal no matter whether the BH spins or not. We show that our BH charging scenario can physically explain the BH's unipolar inductor mechanism in a BH–NS binary system. We calculate electromagnetic emission luminosities due to various energy dissipation mechanisms and find that the electric dipole radiation of the BH makes a dominant contribution to electromagnetic emission at the final stage of inspiral if the BH spins slowly. Abstract

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright milliseconds radio transients with large dispersion measures. Recently, FRB 200428 was detected in temporal coincidence with a hard X-ray flare from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154, which supports that at least some FRBs are from magnetar activity. Interestingly, a portion of X-ray flares from magnetar XTE J1810−197 and the Sun are also accompanied by radio bursts. Many features of Galactic FRB 200428 and cosmological FRBs resemble solar radio bursts. However, a common physical origin among FRBs, magnetar radio pulses, and solar radio bursts has not yet been established. Here, we report a universal correlation between X-ray luminosity and radio luminosity over 20 orders of magnitude among solar type III radio bursts, XTE J1810−197 and Galactic FRB 200428. This universal correlation reveals that the energetic electrons that produce the X-ray flares and those that cause radio emissions have a common origin, which can give stringent limits on the generation process of radio bursts. Moreover, we find similar occurrence frequency distributions of energy, duration, and waiting time for solar radio bursts, SGR 1935+2154 and repeating FRB 121102, which also support the tight correlation and the X-ray flares temporally associated with radio bursts. All of these distributions can be understood by avalanche models of self-organized criticality systems. The universal correlation and statistical similarities indicate that the Galactic FRB 200428 and FRBs seen at cosmological distances can be treated as scaled-up solar radio bursts. Abstract

Type I X-ray bursts in a low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) are caused by unstable nuclear burning of accreted materials. Semi-analytical and numerical studies of unstable nuclear burning have successfully reproduced partial properties of this kind of burst. However, some other properties (e.g. the waiting time) are not well explained. In this paper, we find that the probability distributions of fluence, peak count, rise time, duration and waiting time can be described as power-law-like distributions. This indicates that type I X-ray bursts may be governed by a self-organized criticality (SOC) process. The power-law index of waiting time distribution (WTD) is around $-1$, which is not predicted by any current waiting time model. We propose a physical burst rate model, in which the mean occurrence rate is inversely proportional to time $\lambda\propto t^{-1}$. In this case, the WTD is well explained by a non-stationary Poisson process within the SOC theory. In this theory, the burst size is also predicted to follow a power-law distribution, which requires that the emission area possesses only part of the neutron star surface. Abstract

The ejecta composition is an open question in gamma-ray bursts (GRB) physics. Some GRBs possess a quasi-thermal spectral component in the time-resolved spectral analysis, suggesting a hot fireball origin. Others show a featureless non-thermal spectrum known as the "Band" function, consistent with a synchrotron radiation origin and suggesting that the jet is Poynting-flux-dominated at the central engine and likely in the emission region as well. There are also bursts showing a sub-dominant thermal component and a dominant synchrotron component suggesting a likely hybrid jet composition. Here we report an extraordinarily bright GRB 160625B, simultaneously observed in gamma-rays and optical wavelengths, whose prompt emission consists of three isolated episodes separated by long quiescent intervals, with the durations of each "sub-burst" being $\sim$ 0.8 s, 35 s, and 212 s, respectively. Its high brightness (with isotropic peak luminosity L$_{\rm p, iso}\sim 4\times 10^{53}$ erg/s) allows us to conduct detailed time-resolved spectral analysis in each episode, from precursor to main burst and to extended emission. The spectral properties of the first two sub-bursts are distinctly different, allowing us to observe the transition from thermal to non-thermal radiation between well-separated emission episodes within a single GRB. Abstract

The white light luminescence is observed from the silica slides implanted by sequential Si+ and C+ ions or only by C+ ions followed by thermal annealing. In the photoluminescence (PL) spectra, their white emissions cover the whole visible spectral range from 350 to 800 nm. The influence of thermal annealing on the PL of the implanted samples was studied. The microstructural and optical analysis allow us to figure out the origin of the white light emission, which is mainly attributed to the emission of graphite like C clusters although the contributions from the emissions of the Si and SiC nanocrystals are also included. Compared to the white light emission of C+ implanted sample, the white light emission of Si+/C+ implanted sample has higher thermal stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
