Abstract Sulfate‐reducing microorganisms extensively contribute to the corrosion of ferrous metal infrastructure. There is substantial debate over their corrosion mechanisms. We investigated Fe0 corrosion with Desulfovibrio vulgaris, the sulfate reducer most often employed in corrosion studies. Cultures were grown with both lactate and Fe0 as potential electron donors to replicate the common environmental condition in which organic substrates help fuel the growth of corrosive microbes. Fe0 was corroded in cultures of a D. vulgaris hydrogenase‐deficient mutant with the 1:1 correspondence between Fe0 loss and H2 accumulation expected for Fe0 oxidation coupled to H+ reduction to H2. This result and the extent of sulfate reduction indicated that D. vulgaris was not capable of direct Fe0‐to‐microbe electron transfer even though it was provided with a supplementary energy source in the presence of abundant ferrous sulfide. Corrosion in the hydrogenase‐deficient mutant cultures was greater than in sterile controls, demonstrating that H2 removal was not necessary for the enhanced corrosion observed in the presence of microbes. The parental H2‐consuming strain corroded more Fe0 than the mutant strain, which could be attributed to H2 oxidation coupled to sulfate reduction, producing sulfide that further stimulated Fe0 oxidation. The results suggest that H2 consumption is not necessary for microbially enhanced corrosion, but H2 oxidation can indirectly promote corrosion by increasing sulfide generation from sulfate reduction. The finding that D. vulgaris was incapable of direct electron uptake from Fe0 reaffirms that direct metal‐to‐microbe electron transfer has yet to be rigorously described in sulfate‐reducing microbes.

Abstract Resistance to chemotherapy has been a major hurdle that limits therapeutic benefits for many types of cancer. Here we systematically identify genetic drivers underlying chemoresistance by performing 30 genome-scale CRISPR knockout screens for seven chemotherapeutic agents in multiple cancer cells. Chemoresistance genes vary between conditions primarily due to distinct genetic background and mechanism of action of drugs, manifesting heterogeneous and multiplexed routes towards chemoresistance. By focusing on oxaliplatin and irinotecan resistance in colorectal cancer, we unravel that evolutionarily distinct chemoresistance can share consensus vulnerabilities identified by 26 second-round CRISPR screens with druggable gene library. We further pinpoint PLK4 as a therapeutic target to overcome oxaliplatin resistance in various models via genetic ablation or pharmacological inhibition, highlighting a single-agent strategy to antagonize evolutionarily distinct chemoresistance. Our study not only provides resources and insights into the molecular basis of chemoresistance, but also proposes potential biomarkers and therapeutic strategies against such resistance.

316L stainless steel (SS) is widely applied as microimplant anchorage (MIA) due to its excellent mechanical properties. However, the risk that the oral microorganisms can corrode 316L SS is fully neglected. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of 316L SS is essential to the health and safety of all patients because the accelerated corrosion caused by the oral microbiota can trigger the release of Cr and Ni ions. This study investigated the corrosion behavior and mechanism of subgingival microbiota on 316L SS by 16S rRNA and metagenome sequencing, electrochemical measurements, and surface characterization techniques. Multispecies biofilms were formed by the oral subgingival microbiota in the simulated oral anaerobic environment on 316L SS surfaces, significantly accelerating the corrosion in the form of pitting. The microbiota samples collected from the subjects differed in biofilm compositions, corrosion behaviors, and mechanisms. The oral subgingival microbiota contributed to the accelerated corrosion of 316L SS via acidic metabolites and extracellular electron transfer. Our findings provide a new insight into the underlying mechanisms of oral microbial corrosion and guide the design of oral microbial corrosion-resistant materials.

Bioelectrochemical systems are sustainable and potential technology systems in wastewater treatment for nitrogen removal. The present study fabricated an air-cathode denitrifying microbial fuel cell (DNMFC) with a revisable modular design and investigated metabolic processes using nutrients together with the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of dominated microorganisms. Based on the detection of organics and solvable nitrogen concentrations as well as electron generations in DNMFCs under different conditions, the distribution pattern of nutrients could be quantified. By calculation, it was found that heterotrophic denitrification performed in DNMFCs using 56.6% COD decreased the Coulombic efficiency from 38.0% to 16.5% at a COD/NO3−-N ratio of 7. Furthermore, biological denitrification removed 92.3% of the nitrate, while the residual was reduced via electrochemical denitrification in the cathode. Correspondingly, nitrate as the electron acceptor consumed 16.7% of all the generated electrons, and the residual electrons were accepted by oxygen. Microbial community analysis revealed that bifunctional bacteria of electroactive denitrifying bacteria distributed all over the reactor determined the DNMFC performance; meanwhile, electroactive bacteria were mainly distributed in the anode biofilm, anaerobic denitrifying bacteria adhered to the wall, and facultative anaerobic denitrifying bacteria were distributed in the wall and cathode. Characterizing the contribution of specific microorganisms in DNMFCs comprehensively revealed the significant role of electroactive denitrifying bacteria and their cooperative relationship with other functional bacteria.

The endometrium undergoes a series of precise monthly changes under the regulation of dynamic levels of ovarian hormones that are characterized by repeated shedding and subsequent regeneration without scarring. This provides the potential for wound healing during endometrial injuries. Bioengineering materials highlight the faithful replication of constitutive cells and the extracellular matrix that simulates the physical and biomechanical properties of the endometrium to a larger extent. Significant progress has been made in this field, and functional endometrial tissue bioengineering allows an in-depth investigation of regulatory factors for endometrial and myometrial defects in vitro and provides highly therapeutic methods to alleviate obstetric and gynecological complications. However, much remains to be learned about the latest progress in the application of bioengineering technologies to the human endometrium. Here, we summarize the existing developments in biomaterials and bioengineering models for endometrial regeneration and improving the female reproductive potential.

Abstract The global economic burden of microbial corrosion of metals is enormous. Microbial corrosion of iron‐containing metals is most extensive under anaerobic conditions. Microbes form biofilms on metal surfaces and can directly extract electrons derived from the oxidation of Fe0 to Fe2+ to support anaerobic respiration. H2 generated from abiotic Fe0 oxidation also serves as an electron donor for anaerobic respiratory microbes. Microbial metabolites accelerate this abiotic Fe0 oxidation. Traditional strategies for curbing microbial metal corrosion include cathodic protection, scrapping, a diversity of biocides, alloys that form protective layers or release toxic metal ions, and polymer coatings. However, these approaches are typically expensive and/or of limited applicability and not environmentally friendly. Biotechnology may provide more effective and sustainable solutions. Biocides produced with microbes can be less toxic to eukaryotes, expanding the environments for potential application. Microbially produced surfactants can diminish biofilm formation by corrosive microbes, as can quorum‐sensing inhibitors. Amendments of phages or predatory bacteria have been successful in attacking corrosive microbes in laboratory studies. Poorly corrosive microbes can form biofilms and/or deposit extracellular polysaccharides and minerals that protect the metal surface from corrosive microbes and their metabolites. Nitrate amendments permit nitrate reducers to outcompete highly corrosive sulphate‐reducing microbes, reducing corrosion. Investigation of all these more sustainable corrosion mitigation strategies is in its infancy. More study, especially under environmentally relevant conditions, including diverse microbial communities, is warranted.

The present study proposed a hydro-economic framework for water allocation within the Zayande-Rud basin located in Iran, including urban, industry, agriculture, and environmental sectors as water users. The developed framework can investigate the environmental, economic, and social impacts of the economic-oriented water allocation as well as distributions using respective indices. The hydrologic simulation results indicated that the water scarcity dedicated to different sectors, mostly affected the environment by a 45% water deficit, while residential plus industry sections had a 31% and 29% water shortage, respectively. The application of the hydro-economic model (HEM) for water allocation under the water shortage scenario led to a 9.6%, 4%, and 6% increase in the irrigated area (47467 ha), farmers’ profit (equal to 9.7 million USD), and the employment rate in comparison with the base conditions, respectively. By utilizing the proposed hydro-economic model, the simulation results revealed that the irrigated area can be increased as much as 14%, a further 6% increase in profits for farmers (about 12.7 million USD), and enhancing the employment rate up to10.6%. Moreover, water consumption in agriculture sector can be reduced by 15% compared with traditional water allocation method. Accordingly, using such an integrated water distribution model in a basin with different kinds of water users could give policy-makers an actual view of integrated water management while conducting such plans requires testing in real conditions to analyze the hidden problems as barriers.

Wastewater treatment using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is a potentially useful technology due to its low cost, environmental friendliness, and low sludge production. In this study, a single-chambered air cathode MFC (SCMFC) was developed and investigated regarding its performance and microbial community evolution following nitrate exposure. During long-term operation, diverse denitrifiers accumulated on the electrodes to form a denitrifying MFC (DNMFC) with stable activity for nitrate reduction. The DNMFC presented considerably higher electroactivity, stability, and denitrification rates than the SCMFC. Though energy recovery decreased in the DNMFC by partial organics utilized for heterotrophic denitrification, the electron transfer efficiency increased. Geobacter as the absolutely dominant genus in the SCMFC anode was eliminated and replaced by Azonexus and Pseudomonas in the DNMFC. Furthermore, the biomass of Pseudomonas (151.0 ng/μL) in the DNMFC cathode was five-fold higher than that in the SCMFC, although the bacterial community compositions were quite similar. The DNMFC with highly abundant Pseudomonas exhibited much better performance in terms of electrochemical activity and nitrate removal. The evolution process of functional bacteria from the SCMFC to the DNMFC comprehensively reveals the significant role of denitrifying electroactive bacteria in a bioelectrochemical system for nitrogen-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract Biocorrosion, also called microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC), is a common operational threat to many industrial processes. It threatens carbon steel, stainless steel and many other metals. In the bioprocessing industry, reactor vessels in biomass processing and bioleaching are prone to MIC. MIC is caused by biofilms. The formation and morphology of biofilms can be impacted by fluid flow. Fluid velocity affects biocide distribution and MIC. Thus, assessing the efficacy of a biocide for the mitigation of MIC under flow condition is desired before a field trial. In this work, a benchtop closed flow loop bioreactor design was used to investigate the biocide mitigation of MIC of C1018 carbon steel at 25 °C for 7 days using enriched artificial seawater. An oilfield biofilm consortium was analyzed using metagenomics. The biofilm consortium was grown anaerobically in the flow loop which had a holding vessel for the culture medium and a chamber to hold C1018 carbon steel coupons. Peptide A (codename) was a chemically synthesized cyclic 14-mer (cys-ser-val-pro-tyr-asp-tyr-asn-trp-tyr-ser-asn-trp-cys) with its core 12-mer sequence originated from a biofilm dispersing protein secreted by a sea anemone which possesses a biofilm-free exterior. It was used as a biocide enhancer. The combination of 50 ppm (w/w) THPS (tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate) biocide + 100 nM (180 ppb by mass) Peptide A resulted in extra 1-log reduction in the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) sessile cell count and the acid producing bacteria (APB) sessile cell count compared to 50 ppm THPS alone treatment. Furthermore, with the enhancement of 100 nM Peptide A, extra 44% reduction in weight loss and 36% abatement in corrosion pit depth were achieved compared to 50 ppm THPS alone treatment. Abstract The protection of marine materials against corrosion using marine bacterial biofilms is a promising strategy. However, little is known about the mechanisms of this attractive corrosion prevention method. In this work, the corrosion behaviors of X80 carbon steel (CS) in the presence of three different marine Vibrio species were studied. The results demonstrated that all the three Vibrio spp. displayed significant corrosion protection with a weight loss reduction of up to 68%. Moreover, their corrosion prevention performance was tightly related to their abilities to form biofilms, which was in the order of Vibrio sp. EF187016 > Vibrio alginolyticus > Vibrio parahaemolyticus. To further investigate the corrosion prevention mechanism caused by marine biofilms, the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of Vibrio sp. EF187016 was extracted and added to 3.5 wt% NaCl for abiotic corrosion testing. The results suggested that the EPS inhibited corrosion, which means EPS can play a significant role in corrosion protection by biofilm.

Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a formidable challenge in the marine industry, resulting from intricate interactions among various biochemical reactions and microbial species. Many preventions used to mitigate biocorrosion fail due to ignorance of the MIC mechanisms. This review provides a summary of the current research on microbial corrosion in marine environments, including corrosive microbes and biocorrosion mechanisms. We also summarized current strategies for inhibiting MIC and proposed future research directions for MIC mechanisms and prevention. This review aims to comprehensively understand marine microbial corrosion and contribute to novel strategy developments for biocorrosion control in marine environments.

In this study, microstructural evolution and corrosion behavior of Ti–6Al–4V (TC4) alloy fabricated by laser metal deposition (LMD) were investigated in simulated saliva at 37 °C as a function of scanning strategies. One-way scanning possessed a higher corrosion resistance than cross-scanning, but both of those were inferior to the wrought one. Compared with conventional wrought counterpart, the higher content of β phase improved the corrosion resistance. Results of Mott–Schottky and potentiostatic tests indicated that the passive film upon the surfaces of all the samples exhibited an N-type semiconductor structure and instantaneous nucleation. Of these, the LMD-ed parts displayed a lower donor concentration, higher vacancy diffusion coefficient, and thicker passive film than the wrought samples. XPS analysis revealed that the double-layer structure of passive film leads to a dense protective layer on the surface while the oxide contents of the three were different.

Ti-5Cu alloy has been proved to have excellent mechanical properties and cell compatibility and has certain antibacterial properties due to the addition of Cu. However, there are few studies on the effects of Ti-5Cu alloy on macrophage polarization and immune-related bone formation. In this study, we prepared Ti-5Cu alloy by three-dimensional printing technology and found that Ti-5Cu alloy presented a much smoother surface compared with Ti. In addition, the CCK-8 results indicated the Ti-5Cu alloy had no cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 cells by co-culture. The results of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry showed that the concentration of Cu2+ was 0.133 mg/L after 7 days of co-culture, and the CCK-8 results proved that Cu2+ had no cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 at this concentration. Then, we studied the effects of Ti-5Cu alloy on macrophage polarization; it was shown that the Ti-5Cu alloy is more prone to modulate the RAW264.7 polarization towards the M2 phenotype and the conditioned medium derived from Ti-5Cu alloy significantly promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. However, when the expression of Oncostatin M (OSM) gene of RAW264.7 was knocked down, the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells was decreased. This suggests that the OSM secreted by RAW264.7 co-cultured with Ti-5Cu alloy could accelerate the osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells by acting on OSMR/gp130 receptors.

Microbiologically influenced corrosion is a major source of degradation of metals. Here, extracellular electron transfer is studied during pitting corrosion of stainless steel in the presence of an electroactive bacterium and a riboflavin electron shuttle, revealing bidirectional electron transfer.

Abstract The process of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in soils has received widespread attention. Herein, long-term outdoor soil burial experiments were conducted to elucidate the community composition and functional interaction of soil microorganisms associated with metal corrosion. The results indicated that iron-oxidizing (e.g., Gallionella), nitrifying (e.g., Nitrospira), and denitrifying (e.g., Hydrogenophaga) microorganisms were significantly enriched in response to metal corrosion and were positively correlated with the metal mass loss. Corrosion process may promote the preferential growth of the abundant microbes. The functional annotation revealed that the metabolic processes of nitrogen cycling and electron transfer pathways were strengthened, and also that the corrosion of metals in soil was closely associated with the biogeochemical cycling of iron and nitrogen elements and extracellular electron transfer. Niche disturbance of microbial communities induced by the buried metals facilitated the synergetic effect of the major MIC participants. The co-occurrence network analysis suggested possible niche correlations among corrosion related bioindicators.

Biodegradable magnesium alloys are challenging to be implanted in patients with hyperglycemia and diabetes. A hypothesis is suggested that glucose accelerates microbial ingress and in vitro degradation of Mg–Li–Ca implants. Corrosion resistance and mechanical properties was demonstrated using electrochemical, hydrogen evolution and tensile tests. The bacteria from Hank's solution were isolated via 16S rRNA gene analysis. The results revealed that Mg–1Li–1Ca alloy exhibited different responses to Hank's solution with and without glucose. The solution acidity was ascribed to Microbacterium hominis and Enterobacter xiangfangensis, indicating that glucose promoted microbial activity and degradation and deterioration in mechanical property of Mg–1Li–1Ca alloy.

The corrosion of carbon steel causes dramatic economic losses each year. Since conventional corrosion prevention approaches may cause pollution problems to the environment, ecofriendly and effective corrosion approaches are desired. Microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition (MICI) has been reported as a sustainable corrosion prevention method. This work aims to evaluate the corrosion inhibition effect of two bacterial strains, Tenacibaculum mesophilum D-6 and Bacillus sp. Y-6 by choosing Q235 carbon steel as a model system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and a series of electrochemical techniques were applied to study the corrosion prevention effect. The electrochemical and pitting results indicated that T. mesophilum D-6 displayed a better corrosion protection effect. T. mesophilum D-6 formed a denser and thicker biofilm on the Q235 surface than Bacillus sp. Y-6. The maximum thickness of the T. mesophilum D-6 biofilms was 11.6 ± 0.7 μm, which is about twice as thick than that of Bacillus sp. Y-6. The corrosion prevention mechanism was ascribed to the formation of biofilms as a barrier to block corrosive agents such as O2. This study provides a theoretical foundation for the application of biofilms as green and effective corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel.

The bactericide benzalkonium bromide is widely used to kill Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which causes microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). However, the extensive use of benzalkonium bromide will enhance bacterial drug resistance and cause environmental pollution. In this study, benzalkonium bromide combined with Cu-bearing 2205 duplex stainless steel (2205-Cu DSS) was used to kill Pseudomonas aeruginosa; the germicidal rate of the combination of benzalkonium bromide and 2205-Cu DSS was 24.2% higher than that of using benzalkonium bromide alone, after five days. The antibacterial efficacy was evaluated using an antibacterial test and biofilm observation. The results showed that, in the presence of P. aeruginosa, the combination of 23.44 ppm benzalkonium bromide and 2205-Cu DSS showed the best antibacterial efficacy.

Summary Biocorrosion first surfaced in the scientific literature when Richard H. Gaines associated corrosion with bacterial activities in 1910. It is also known as microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). In general, it covers two scenarios. One is that microbes cause corrosion directly, which usually means microbes secrete corrosive metabolites or microbes harvest electrons from a metal for respiration to produce energy. In the second scenario, microbes are behind the initiation or acceleration of corrosion caused by a pre‐existing corrosive agent such as water and CO2, by compromising the passive film (often a metal oxide film on a metal). MIC is caused by microbial biofilms. It is everywhere around us. This work dissects some notable examples with perspectives.

Biocides are widely used for the mitigation of microbial contamination, especially in the field of the aviation fuel industry. However, the long-term use of biocide has raised the concerns regarding the environmental contamination and microbial drug resistance. In this study, the effect of a mixture of D-amino acids (D-tyrosine and D-methionine) on the enhancement of the bactericidal effect of 5-Chloro-2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one/2-Methyl-2H-isothiazole-3-one (CMIT/MIT) against corrosive Vibrio harveyi biofilm was evaluated. The results revealed that D-Tyr and D-Met alone can enhance the biocidal efficacy of CMIT/MIT, while the treatment of 5 ppm CMIT/MIT, 1 ppm D-Tyr and 100 ppm D-Met showed the best efficacy comparable to that of 25 ppm CMIT/MIT alone. The triple combination treatment successfully prevented the establishment of the corrosive V. harveyi biofilm and effectively removed the mature V. harveyi biofilm. These conclusions were confirmed by the results of sessile cell counts, images obtained by scanning electron microscope and confocal laser scanning microscope, and the ATP test kit.

Abstract Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is a ubiquitous microbe. It can form recalcitrant biofilms in clinical and industrial settings. PA biofilms cause infections in patients. They also cause biocorrosion of medical implants. In this work, D-tyrosine (D-tyr) was investigated as an antimicrobial enhancer for ciprofloxacin (CIP) against a wild-type PA biofilm (strain PAO1) on C1018 carbon steel in a strictly anaerobic condition. Seven-day biofilm prevention test results demonstrated that 2 ppm (w/w) D-tyr enhanced 30 ppm CIP by achieving extra 2-log sessile cell reduction compared with the 30 ppm CIP alone treatment. The cocktail of 30 ppm CIP + 2 ppm D-tyr achieved similar efficacy as the 80 ppm CIP alone treatment in the biofilm prevention test. Results also indicated that the enhanced antimicrobial treatment reduced weight loss and pitting corrosion. In the 3-hour biofilm removal test, the cocktail of 80 ppm CIP + 5 ppm D-tyr achieved extra 1.5-log reduction in sessile cell count compared with the 80 ppm CIP alone treatment. The cocktail of 80 ppm CIP + 5 ppm D-tyr achieved better efficacy than the 150 ppm CIP alone treatment in the biofilm removal test.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a ubiquitous bacterium capable of forming problematic biofilms in many environments. They cause biocorrosion of medical implants and industrial equipment and infrastructure. Aerobic corrosion of P. aeruginosa against stainless steels has been reported by some researchers while there is a lack of reports on anaerobic P. aeruginosa corrosion in the literature. In this work, the corrosion by a wild-type P. aeruginosa (strain PAO1) biofilm against 304 stainless steel (304 SS) was investigated under strictly anaerobic condition for up to 14 days. The anaerobic corrosion of 304 SS by P. aeruginosa was reported for the first time. Results showed that the average sessile cell counts on 304 SS coupons after 7- and 14-day incubations were 4.8 × 107 and 6.2 × 107 cells/cm2, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy corroborated the sessile cell counts. The X-ray diffraction analysis identified the corrosion product as iron nitride, confirming that the corrosion was caused by the nitrate reducing biofilm. The largest pit depths on 304 SS surfaces after the 7- and 14-day incubations with P. aeruginosa were 3.9 and 7.4 μm, respectively. Electrochemical tests corroborated the pitting data.

Carbon steels are widely used in the oil and gas industry from downhole tubing to transport trunk lines. Microbes form biofilms, some of which cause the so-called microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of carbon steels. MIC by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) is often a leading cause in MIC failures. Electrogenic SRB sessile cells harvest extracellular electrons from elemental iron oxidation for energy production in their metabolism. A previous study suggested that electron mediators riboflavin and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) both accelerated the MIC of 304 stainless steel by the Desulfovibrio vulgaris biofilm that is a corrosive SRB biofilm. Compared with stainless steels, carbon steels are usually far more prone to SRB attacks because SRB biofilms form much denser biofilms on carbon steel surfaces with a sessile cell density that is two orders of magnitude higher. In this work, C1018 carbon steel coupons were used in tests of MIC by D. vulgaris with and without an electron mediator. Experimental weight loss and pit depth data conclusively confirmed that both riboflavin and FAD were able to accelerate D. vulgaris attack against the carbon steel considerably. It has important implications in MIC failure analysis and MIC mitigation in the oil and gas industry.

In this work, corrosion of a Q235 carbon steel in CO2-containing oilfield produced water in the presence of iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) with organic carbon source starvation and the inhibiting performance of imidazoline derivative were investigated by weight loss, electrochemical measurements and surface analysis techniques. Results show that iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) could survive well in the aqueous environments with organic carbon source starvation. Corrosion of the steel occurred under the IOB biofilm. Both the planktonic and sessile IOB cell counts after 14 days of testing were related to the biofilm incubation time. The corrosion rate of the steel covered with 7-day IOB biofilm was lowest suggesting that this biofilm had the weakest corrosivity in the test solution. The inhibition performance of the inhibitor was affected by the IOB biofilm formed on steel surface. There was a higher inhibition efficiency of the inhibitor, when the steel was covered with a 2-day IOB biofilm due to less IOB biofilm formed on the steel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between microstructure and corrosion behavior of martensitic high nitrogen stainless steel 30Cr15Mo1N at different austenitizing temperatures was investigated by microscopy observation, electrochemical measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and immersion testing. The results indicated that finer Cr-rich M2N dispersed more homogeneously than coarse M23C6, and the fractions of M23C6 and M2N both decreased with increasing austenitizing temperature. The Cr-depleted zone around M23C6 was wider and its minimum Cr concentration was lower than M2N. The metastable pits initiated preferentially around coarse M23C6 which induced severer Cr-depletion, and the pit growth followed the power law. The increasing of austenitizing temperature induced fewer metastable pit initiation sites, more uniform element distribution and higher contents of Cr, Mo and N in the matrix. In addition, the passive film thickened and Cr2O3, Cr3+ and CrN enriched with increasing austenitizing temperature, which enhanced the stability of the passive film and repassivation ability of pits. Therefore, as austenitizing temperature increased, the metastable and stable pitting potentials increased and pit growth rate decreased, revealing less susceptible metastable pit initiation, larger repassivation tendency and higher corrosion resistance. The determining factor of pitting potentials could be divided into three stages: dissolution of M23C6 (below 1000 °C), dissolution of M2N (from 1000 to 1050 °C) and existence of a few undissolved precipitates and non-metallic inclusions (above 1050 °C). Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) is a major problem in the oil and gas industry as well as in many other industries. Current treatment methods rely mostly on pigging and biocide dosing. Biocide resistance is a growing concern. Thus, it is desirable to use biocide enhancers to improve the efficacy of existing biocides. D-Amino acids are naturally occurring. Our previous work demonstrated that some D-amino acids are biocide enhancers. Under a biocide stress of 50 ppm (w/w) hydroxymethyl phosphonium sulfate (THPS) biocide, 1 ppm D-tyrosine and 100 ppm D-methionine used separately successfully mitigated the Desulfovibrio vulgaris biofilm on carbon steel coupons. The data reported in this work revealed that 50 ppm of an equimolar mixture of D-methionine, D-tyrosine, D-leucine, and D-tryptophan greatly enhanced 50 ppm THPS biocide treatment of two recalcitrant biofilm consortia containing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB), and fermentative bacteria, etc., from oilfield operations.
