Previous efforts to measure atmospheric iodine have focused on marine and coastal regions. We report the first ground‐based tropospheric iodine monoxide (IO) radical observations over the central continental United States. Throughout April 2022, IO columns above Storm Peak Laboratory, Colorado (3,220 m.a.s.l.) ranged from 0.7 ± 0.5 to 3.6 ± 0.5 × 1012 (average: 1.9 × 1012 molec cm−2). IO was consistently elevated in air masses transported from over the Pacific Ocean. The observed IO columns were up to three times higher and the range was larger than predicted by a global model, which warrants further investigation into iodine sources, sinks, ozone loss, and particle formation. IO mixing ratios increased with altitude. At the observed levels, iodine may be competitive with bromine as an oxidant of elemental mercury at cold temperatures typical of the free troposphere. Iodine‐induced mercury oxidation is missing in atmospheric models, understudied, and helps explain model underestimation of oxidized mercury measurements. Plain Language Summary: Halogens such as chlorine, bromine, and iodine are highly reactive gases that participate in atmospheric chemistry, including ozone destruction, particle formation, modification of greenhouse gas lifetime (i.e., methane, dimethylsulfide), and the oxidation of elemental mercury. Iodine mainly enters the atmosphere from oceans; therefore, past measurements of atmospheric iodine have focused on marine and polar regions. This study describes the first lower atmospheric measurements of iodine monoxide (IO) radicals at a remote mountaintop site in the central continental United States. These measurements indicate that the concentration of IO radicals showed a large range over the course of 1 month and reached levels up to three times higher than predicted by a global atmospheric chemistry model. These observations suggest that our understanding of the iodine sources and sinks to the free troposphere may be incomplete. Moreover, we suggest that iodine's contribution to ozone destruction and mercury chemistry may be underestimated; in particular, iodine may be competitive with bromine in the oxidation of elemental mercury in the free troposphere. The role of environmental forcings on the fecal contamination dynamics in small coastal streams was investigated, using the Aljezur coastal stream (Portugal) as a test case. An integrated modeling approach, combining hydrological and coupled hydrodynamic-fecal indicator bacteria models, was applied to selected scenarios of relevant forcings, on the basis of previously calibrated and validated model applications. The forcings investigated included: tides, winds, waves, atmospheric pressure, bathymetry, river flow, and upstream fecal bacteria concentrations; this study targeted the characterization of the relative importance of these factors on the fecal contamination dynamics, to enhance our understanding of small coastal streams water quality dynamics. Results highlight distinct patterns for dry and wet periods. Fecal bacteria transport is mainly forced by tidal propagation, in dry periods; and by freshwater flows, during wet periods. The analysis reveals a complex hydraulic and water quality dynamic resulting from the interactions between the environmental forcings and strongly dependent on their relative strength. Measurements of ozone and NO2 were carried out in the marine environment of the Bay of Bengal (BoB) during the winter months, December 2008-January 2009, as part of the second Integrated Campaign for Aerosols, gases and Radiation Budget conducted under the Geosphere Biosphere Programme of the Indian Space Research Organization. The ozone mixing ratio was found to be high in the head and the southeast BoB with a mean value of 61±7 ppb and 53±6 ppb, respectively. The mixing ratios of NO2 and CO were also relatively high in these regions. The spatial patterns were examined in the light of airflow patterns, air mass back trajectories and other meteorological conditions and satellite retrieved maps of tropospheric ozone, NO2, CO, and fire count in and around the region. The distribution of these gases was strongly associated with the transport from the adjoining land mass. The anthropogenic activities and forest fires/biomass burning over the Indo Gangetic Plains and other East Asian regions contribute to ozone and its precursors over the BoB. Similarity in the spatial pattern suggests that their source regions could be more or less the same. Most of the diurnal patterns showed decrease of the ozone mixing ratio during noon/afternoon followed by a nighttime increase and a morning high. Over this oceanic region, photochemical production of ozone involving NO2 was not very active. Water vapour played a major role in controlling the variation of ozone. An attempt is made to simulate ozone level over the north and south BoB using the photochemical box model (NCAR-MM). The current proposal for a revised European Directive concerning the quality of bathing water significantly increases the demands for the control of wet-weather discharges. A densely urbanised combined catchment was modelled for a 19-year long rainfall series in order to assess the current situation and to evaluate the benefits of potential solutions. Storage and advanced physical-chemical treatment of stormwater in the STP may significantly contribute for the reduction of the overflow volumes but reductions of the spill frequency under 2.5 spill days per bathing season are hardly obtained. This study reveals the severe strains that the local rainfall pattern may place on the control of the frequency of wet-weather discharges, pointing to serious technical, social and economical implications, at the local and at the national level, if the current proposal for a revised European Directive on Bathing Water is enforced. Low oxygen levels (hypoxia) play a role in clinical conditions such as stroke, chronic ischemia, and cancer. To better understand these diseases, it is crucial to study the responses of vertebrates to hypoxia. Among vertebrates, some teleosts have developed the ability to adapt to extremely low oxygen levels. We have studied long-term adaptive responses to hypoxia in adult zebrafish. We used zebrafish that survived severe hypoxic conditions lot 3 wk and showed adaptive behavioral and phenotypic changes. We used cDNA microarrays to investigate hypoxia-induced changes in expression of 15,532 genes in the respiratory organs (the gills). We have identified 367 differentially expressed genes of which 117 showed hypoxia-induced and 250 hypoxia reduced expressions. Metabolic depression was indicated by repression of genes in the TCA cycle in the electron transport chain and of genes involved in protein biosynthesis. We observed enhanced expression of the monocarboxylate transporter and of the oxygen transporter myoglobin. The hypoxia-induced group further included the genes for Niemann-Pick C disease and for Wolman disease [lysosomal acid lipase (LAL)]. Both diseases lead to a similar intraand extracellular accumulation of cholesterol and glycolipids. The Niemann-Pick C protein binds to cholesterol from internal lysosomal membranes and is involved in cholesterol trafficking. LAL is responsible for lysosomal cholesterol degradation. Our data suggest a novel adaptive mechanism to hypoxia, the induction of genes for lysosomal lipid trafficking and degradation. Studying physiological responses to hypoxia in species tolerant for extremely low oxygen levels can help identify novel regulatory genes, which may have important clinical implications. Wet weather urban discharges are responsible for bathing water contamination. The proposal for a revised EU Directive concerning the quality of bathing water imposes significantly more stringent requirements for the management of bathing water quality, with particularly important repercussions on beaches subjected to short-term pollution incidents. The paper reviews the aspects from EU legislation most directly related to the problem of wet-weather discharges, placing special emphasis on the recent revision process of the Directive on bathing water quality, and evaluates the benefits of some potential solutions based on continuous modelling of a combined sewer system. Increasing the sewer system storage capacity or the STP hydraulic capacity may substantially reduce the untreated discharge volumes, but spill frequency reductions under 2 to 3 spill days per bathing season will hardly be achieved. Results show the severe strains that local rainfall patterns would place on compliance with the Commission's proposal for a revised Directive and highlight the importance of the changes introduced in the amended proposal recently approved by the Council, making it less prescriptive if adequate measures are adopted to prevent bathers' exposure to short-term pollution incidents. The Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) Operational Control Segment (OCS) generates predicted satellite ephemerides and clock corrections that are broadcast in the navigation message and used by receivers to estimate real-time satellite position and clock corrections for use in navigation solutions. Any errors in these ephemerides will directly impact the accuracy of GPS based positioning. This paper compares the satellite position computed using broadcast ephemeredes with the precise position provided by the International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) Final Orbit solution. Similar comparisons have been undertaken in the past, but for only short periods of time. This paper presents an analysis of the GPS broadcast ephemeris position error on a daily basis over the entire operational lifetime of the GPS system. In this article the authors discuss the misuse of neuroscience in national security. The authors stress on the validity and reliability of neuroscientific applications, particularly the utilization of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based lie detection. Furthermore, the authors are critical on Jonathan Marks' neuroskepticism towards the legitimacy of neuroscientific technologies and its capability to enhance interrogation techniques.

Background: Cytoreductive surgery (CS) combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) is a multimodal approach to the treatment of peritoneal metastases (PM) of lower gastrointestinal origin. This study examines patient outcomes and critically evaluates its patterns of recurrences relative to the site of metastatic origin., Methods: Patients treated with CS/IPC from 2000 to 2012 where PM arose from a primary tumour of the appendix, colon and rectum were identified from a prospective database for retrospective evaluation. The primary endpoints were survival (overall and disease-free), and secondary end points include patterns of recurrence and prognostic factors associated with overall outcomes., Results: Two hundred and eleven patients were followed up for a median of 23.3 months (range 1–156). Overall median survival was 46.8 months, and the 1-, 3-, 5-year survival rates were 87, 56 and 42 %, respectively. The 5-year survival of patients with appendiceal, colonic and rectal PM was 55, 33 and 20 %, respectively. Tumour origin was the only independent prognostic factor associated with overall survival (p = 0.03). Recurrences were more common in patients of colorectal origin over appendiceal origin (p\0.001) and were more likely to be of a systemic nature (p = 0.05)., Conclusion: CS/IPC provides an option for improved survival in patients with PM of lower gastrointestinal origin and appears to be most promising in patients with disease of appendiceal origin.

Since ancient times, it is understood that stormwater from constructed areas should be managed somehow. Waste and pollution transported by stormwater poses quantity and quality problems, affecting public health and the quality of the environment. Sanitation infrastructures in urbanized regions have different development levels and the perception of stormwater changed considerably during the centuries and especially in recent years. Still, there is an evident worldwide heterogeneity when analyzing the lack of studies on urban stormwater conducted in some Asian or African countries. Strategies for sustainable stormwater management are needed at different decision levels (political, regional or local scale, for instance) but all of them need information and a clear understanding of the possibilities that are at stake as well as the main consequences of each decision. A sound approach to stormwater management should be flexible, based on local characteristics, and should take into consideration temporal, spatial and administrative factors and law, among other issues. Economic or technical constraints define different decision scenarios. Best Management Practices should be seen as an opportunity for development and improvement of social, educational and environmental conditions in urbanized and surrounding areas. Therefore they require an ample perspective and the participation of different stakeholders. High-quality decision needs time and a fair overview of the problem: the purpose of this document is to contribute to sustainable stormwater management, informing on the most relevant factors that should be assessed and their interaction. Mammalian CYPHER (Oracle, KIA0613), a member of the PDZ-LIM family of proteins (Enigma/LMP-1, ENH, ZASP/Cypher, RIL, ALP, and CLP-36), has been associated with cardiac and muscular myopathies. Targeted deletion of Cypher in mice is neonatal lethal possibly caused by myopathies. To further investigate the role of cypher in development, we have cloned the zebrafish orthologue. We present here the gene, domain structure, and expression pattern of zebrafish cypher during development. Cypher was not present as a maternal mRNA and was absent during early development. Cypher mRNA was first detected at the 3-somite stage in adaxial somites, and as somites matured, cypher expression gradually enveloped the whole somite. Later, cypher expression was also found in the heart, in head and jaw musculature, and in the brain. We further identified 13 alternative spliced forms of cypher from zebrafish heart and skeletal muscle tissue, among them a very short form containing the PDZ domain but lacking the ZM (ZASP-like) motif and the LIM domains. Targeted gene knock-down experiments using cypher antisense morpholinos led to severe defects, including truncation of the embryo, deformation of somites, dilatation of the pericardium, and thinning of the ventricular wall. The phenotype could be rescued by a cypher form, which contains the PDZ domain and the ZM motif, but lacks all three LIM domains. These findings indicate that a PDZ domain protein is important for normal somite formation and in normal heart development. Treatment of zebrafish embryos with cyclopamine, which disrupts hedgehog signaling, abolished cypher expression in 9 somite and 15-somite stage embryos. Taken together, our data suggest that cypher may play a role downstream of sonic hedgehog, in a late stage of somite development, when slow muscle fibers differentiate and migrate from the adaxial cells.

This paper discusses the use of water quality deterministic modelling together with an integrated approach to assess the impact of urban stormwater discharges into ephemeral watercourses, based on the study of a Portuguese catchment. The description of the main aspects, difficulties and benefits found during data collection and model calibration and verification is presented, and the associated uncertainties and errors discussed. Experimental results showed a strong short- and long-term impact of sewer discharges on rivers, and confirmed deposition, resuspension and transport of pollutants as important processes for the water quality. However, the resuspension of riverbed sediment pollutants during storms was probably more significant than the direct impact of the urban discharges. The HydroWorks model was used since it allows for the calculation of pollutant build-up on catchment surfaces and in gully pots, their wash-off, and the deposition and erosion of sediments in sewers. However, it uses several constants, which could not be independently calibrated, increasing the uncertainty already associated with the data. River flows have quite different magnitude from the sewer system overflows, which, together with the difficulties in evaluating river flow rates, makes the integrated modelling approach rather complex and costly.

Skin resurfacing with lasers for skin restoration has been the most exciting advance in cosmetic surgery in the past 2 years. This method has effectively replaced chemical peel and dermabrasion as modes for skin rejuvenation, yet surprisingly, very little has been published on its effectiveness. Our aim is to delineate clear indications, methods and results of laser skin resurfacing. Laser resurfacing has evolved over the past 13 years and our current method has emerged from this experience. This method has been employed on 258 consecutive patients treated over the past 2 years. A total of 201 patients were treated for photodamaged skin, 53 for facial acne scarring and four for post-surgical scars. Each of these conditions has in common the pathological finding of contour irregularity of the involved abnormal skin. The CO2 Ultrapulse laser's advantage is the predictable ability to vaporize the upper layer of elevated skin, tighten collagen bundles and induce a local inflammatory reaction with epithelial proliferation. This paper presents a clear, concise, and conservatively oriented technique, including pre- and post-operative care of laser skin resurfacing. The technique presented is conceived to correct precisely the underlying pathological condition and can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures. A total of 200 patients underwent full face resurfacing, 41 periorbital, 13 perioral and four for facial scars. Of the patients, 78% were female and 22% were male. The results of each patient were judged by an independent observer. Some 92% were found to have either an excellent or very good result; 2% were judged to be satisfactory; and 6% were from outside the region or were lost to follow-up. Minor complications included 12% transient post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, 3% acute acne and 1% herpes type 1. There were no major complications, including hypertrophic scarring. A total of 15% required some type of secondary touch-up resurfacing. Our method of laser skin resurfacing offers a consistent method for dramatic improvement of facial skin quality for those patients with photodamage and acne scarring, while minimizing risk.

Background: The carbon dioxide (CO2) laser is a surgical tool recognized for its capacity of combined simultaneous tissue transection and hemostasis without unwanted distant transmission of energy., Objective: To determine the potential of laser-assisted rhytidectomy., Methods: A preliminary group of 18 patients were treated for facial rejuvenation by a technique of laser-assisted rhytidectomy with excellent results., Results: No major complications including hematoma were seen., Conclusion: Based on these initial findings, we conclude that laser-assisted rhytidectomy shows great promise for better results with diminished risks.

Background: Laser skin resurfacing is growing in popularity in both the professional as well as lay populations. Freehand delivery of impacts is relatively time consuming. Accurate and precise placement of impacts to avoid unwanted overlapping and the superimposing of multiple impacts is difficult., Objective: To evaluate a new computerized scanning device, the computerized pattern generator (CPG), and to compare it with freehand delivery of multiple laser impacts over large areas., Methods: Sixty-one patients were treated using the CPG by surgeons who are experienced with freehand laser resurfacing., Results: CPG delivery provides more rapid resurfacing with more uniform, accurate, and precise distribution of impacts., Conclusion: Combining the CPG with the Ultrapulse laser is a valuable addition making the procedure faster and more controllable.

Background: A new ultrapulse CO2 laser has been investigated for its possible use in hair transplanting. This laser, because of its ultrashort high energy pulses, produces far less thermal damage to adjacent tissues, including hair follicles, than earlier types of CO2 lasers. The potential advantages of using such a laser in minigrafting are reviewed and include less bleeding, greater density, and absence of "compression.", Objective: The purpose of this study was to see if hair survival in grafts placed into laser-prepared sites would be as good or better than that seen with scalpel slits., Method: Hair counts were used in 10 patients to compare hair survival in grafts placed into laser-prepared sites and into scalpel-prepared sites in a comparable but contralateral location., Results: Average graft hair counts were greater in laser-prepared sites in four of 10 patients, equal to grafts in scalpel-prepared sites in five, and fewer in one. Hair growth occurred earlier in laser-prepared sites in five of the 10 patients., Conclusion: The authors are optimistic that the ultrapulse laser will become an important tool in hair transplanting.

A new surgical procedure employing a carbon dioxide laser for treating actinic cheilitis is described. Eight patients having biopsy-proven actinic cheilitis and one patient having clinically evident actinic cheilitis but biopsy-proven superficial basal cell carcinoma were treated by vermilion ablation using the carbon dioxide laser. After an average follow-up period of 34 months (27 to 38 months), no patient has had a recurrence of cheilitis. Normal contour of the treated lip has been preserved in all patients, while none has had significant post-treatment scarring.

Hemangiomas of the head and neck region can be a therapeutic challenge depending on their size, flow rate, and location. The neodymium-yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd-YAG) laser was used to treat 16 pediatric and adult patients with cavernous, capillary, and mixed hemangiomas as well as hypertrophic port-wine stains of the head and neck. Low-power energy and intermittent short exposure accomplished photocoagulation with minimal damage to surrounding tissue. Follow-up study in these patients has ranged from 1 to 3 years with excellent results in 14 of 16 patients. Few complications and no major morbidity or mortality occurred. Photocoagulation of hemangiomas of the head and neck using the Nd-YAG laser appears to be an exciting new therapeutic option for this difficult problem. Further clinical study and follow-up appear to be warranted.
