BACKGROUND: In a previous study, more attention has been given to the psychological state of doctors than to that of nurses although the workload, working hours, and patient contact time are generally higher for nurses than doctors. The current status of nurses' perceived stress, work engagement, and perceived professional benefit during the routine management of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and how their perceived stress affects the other two variables are topics that merit research attention. OBJECTIVE: In this study, the status of nurses' perceived stress, work engagement, and perceived professional benefit during the routine management of the COVID-19 pandemic was investigated to explore whether their perceived stress level has any effect on the other two variables. METHODS: The convenience sampling method was adopted, and 669 nurses from the First People's Hospital of Jingzhou were selected to participate in this study. Questionnaires on perceived stress, work engagement, and perceived professional benefit were used in the survey, and the data were processed using the SPSS 20.0 program for the descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, analysis of variance. RESULTS: The total score of the nurses' perceived stress was 18.58±4.37 points. The total scores of their work engagement (43.32±14.01) and perceived professional benefit (140.23±17.75). CONCLUSION: The nurses' total perceived stress score was at an upper-middle level, and their total work engagement and perceived professional benefit scores were relatively high. Overall, perceived stress has a negative effect on nurses' work engagement and perceived professional benefit. That is, the higher the pressure perception of nurses, the lower the degree of work engagement and perceived professional benefit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been widely applied in the field of food safety due to its exceptional molecular recognition capabilities. In this study, a simple method for preparing a flexible SERS substrate was designed for the ultrasensitive real-time detection of the banned drugs malachite green (MG) and crystal violet (CV). The substrate was prepared by patterned spraying of a superhydrophobic coating prepared from candle soot onto the surface of a poly-(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) sponge, followed by simple Ag nanoparticle (Ag NP) deposition in the superhydrophilic region. The PVA sponge with special hydrophilicity can completely absorb the droplets to be measured within 1–5 s without additional drying treatment. And the Ag NPs aggregated by potassium iodide (KI) resulted in a significant enhancement of the Raman signal, enabling the substrate to realize the detection of MG and CV as low as 100 fg/mL (2.74 × 10–13 M) and 1 pg/mL (2.45 × 10–12 M), respectively, with a long lifetime (90 days). Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties of the flexible substrate, the substrate can realize the simultaneous detection of very small amounts of MG and CV on the surface of crayfish by simple wiping, which has great application prospects in the field of food safety and field inspection. Background and purpose: Ischemic stroke, a major contributor to global disability and mortality, is underpinned by intricate pathophysiological mechanisms, notably neuroinflammation and immune cell dynamics. Prior research has identified a nuanced and often paradoxical link between immune cell phenotypes and ischemic stroke susceptibility. The aim of this study was to elucidate the potential causal links between the median fluorescence intensity (MFI) and morphological parameters (MP) of 731 immune cell types and ischemic stroke risk. Methods: By analyzing extensive genetic datasets, we conducted comprehensive Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to discern the genetic correlations between diverse immune cell attributes (MFI and MP) and ischemic stroke risk. Results: Our study identified key immune cell signatures linked to ischemic stroke risk. Both B cells and T cells, among other immune cell types, have a bidirectional influence on stroke risk. Notably, the regulatory T‐cell phenotype demonstrates significant neuroprotective properties, with all odds ratio (OR) values and confidence intervals (CIs) being less than 1. Furthermore, CD39 phenotype immune cells, particularly CD39+ CD8+ T cells (inverse variance weighting [IVW] OR 0.92, 95% CI 0.87–0.97; p = 0.002) and CD39+ activated CD4 regulatory T cells (IVW OR 0.93, 95% CI 0.90–0.97; p < 0.001), show notable neuroprotection against ischemic stroke. Conclusion: This investigation provides new genetic insights into the interplay between various immune cells and ischemic stroke, underscoring the complex role of immune processes in stroke pathogenesis. These findings lay a foundation for future research, which may confirm and expand upon these links, potentially leading to innovative immune‐targeted therapies for stroke prevention and management. Background: The relationship between epinephrine and cancer can be dose‐dependent in in vivo study. Whether it is the same in human body still needs verification. Method: We used frozen human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) tissues to detect epinephrine content and analyzed its relationship with survival using the K‐M method and Cox regression. Disturbance of blood cell count and C‐reactive protein and identification of related potent intermediary factors were also analyzed. Results: K‐M plot and Cox regression all showed the inverted U‐shaped relationship between epinephrine and PDAC survival. Lymphocyte adjustment can increase the HRs of epinephrine for PDAC death by >10%. Conclusion: Epinephrine played an anti‐tumor or pro‐tumor effect depending on the specific concentration. Circulating lymphocyte count was elevated and might acted as a compensation pathway to reduce the pro‐tumor effect of epinephrine to PDAC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective of this study is to identify reliable and accurate biomarkers for the early stratification of disease severity, a crucial aspect that is currently lacking for the impending phases of the next COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: In this study, we identified important module and hub genes related to clinical severe COVID-19 using differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screening combing weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) in dataset GSE213313. We further screened and confirmed these hub genes in another two new independent datasets (GSE172114 and GSE157103). In order to evaluate these key genes' stability and robustness for diagnosing or predicting the progression of illness, we used RT-PCR validation of selected genes in blood samples obtained from hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Results: A total of 968 and 52 DEGs were identified between COVID-19 patients and normal people, critical and non-critical patients, respectively. Then, using WGCNA, 10 modules were constructed. Among them, the blue module positively associated with clinic disease severity of COVID-19. From overlapped section between DEGs and blue module, 12 intersected common differential genes were obtained. Subsequently, these hub genes were validated in another two new independent datasets as well and 9 genes that overlapped showed a highly correlation with disease severity. Finally, the mRNA expression levels of these hub genes were tested in blood samples from COVID-19 patients. In severe cases, there was increased expression of MCEMP1, ANXA3, CD177, and SCN9A. In particular, MCEMP1 increased with disease severity, which suggested an unfavorable development and a frustrating prognosis. Conclusion: Using comprehensive bioinformatical analysis and the validation of clinical samples, we identified four major candidate genes, MCEMP1, ANXA3, CD177, and SCN9A, which are essential for diagnosis or development of COVID-19. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation using solar illumination under ambient conditions is a promising strategy for production of the indispensable chemical NH3. However, due to the catalyst's limitations in solar energy utilization, loss of hot electrons during transfer, and low nitrogen adsorption and activation capacity, the unsatisfactory solar‐to‐chemical conversion (SCC) efficiencies of most photocatalysts limit their practical applications. Herein, cerium oxide nanosheets with abundant strain‐VO defects were anchored on Au hollow nanomushroom through atomically sharp interfaces to construct a novel semiconductor/plasmonic metal hollow nanomushroom‐like heterostructure (denoted cerium oxide‐AD/Au). Plasmonic Au extended the absorption of light from the visible to the second near‐infrared region. The superior interface greatly enhanced the transfer efficiency of hot electrons. Abundant strain‐VO defects induced by interfacial compressive strain promoted adsorption and in situ activation of nitrogen, and such synergistic promotion of strain and VO defects was further confirmed by density functional theory calculations. The judicious structural and defect engineering co‐promoted the efficient nitrogen photofixation of the cerium oxide‐AD/Au heterostructures with a SCC efficiency of 0.1 % under simulated AM 1.5G solar illumination, which is comparable to the average solar‐to‐biomass conversion efficiency of natural photosynthesis by typical plants, thus exhibiting significant potential as a new candidate for artificial photosynthesis. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a common complication of diabetes, and it is also the main cause of chronic renal failure. Physiological/pathological changes mediated by high glucose are the main factors causing injury of DN, including the enhancement of polyol pathway, the accumulation of advanced glycation products (AGEs), and the activation of protein kinase C (PKC) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signals. In addition, the abnormal activation of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and oxidative stress are also involved. Melatonin is a physiological hormone mainly secreted by the pineal gland which has been proved to be related to diabetes. Studies have shown that exogenous melatonin intervention can reduce blood glucose and alleviate high glucose mediated pathological damage. At the same time, melatonin also has a strong antioxidant effect, and can inhibit the activation of RAS.
