Abstract

Molecularly imprinted polymers inspired by antigen-antibody interactions have received substantial interest as a biomimetic artificial receptor system in environmental applications. Herein, we present a molecularly imprinted surface plasmon resonance sensor integrated with gold nanoparticles for the identification of bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical. We synthesized BPA-imprinted nanofilm consisting of amino acid-based functional monomers to selectively detect BPA from synthetic wastewater samples. BPA-spiked synthetic wastewater samples were analyzed to ensure the method's reliability and feasibility. Under ideal conditions, the suggested approach performed well in terms of analytical performance to bisphenol A, with a wide linear range of 0.1 to 10 µg/L and LOD of 10 ng/L. The sensor results align well with the Langmuir adsorption model. It has also been shown that repeated use of the sensor can be achieved. According to selectivity studies, bisphenol A adsorbed within the imprinted cavities favorably compared to 4-nitrophenol and phenol. The produced bisphenol A-imprinted surface plasmon resonance sensor provides improved sensitivity based on the signal amplification strategy, unconjugated sensing without the need for labelling, real-time sensing, low sample consumption rates, quantifiable assessment, and outstanding kinetic rate constant calculation in actual samples. 10. An Investigation on Primary School Students' 3D Geometric Thinking

Abstract

This study aims to investigate how primary school students' three-dimensional geometric thinking changes across grades. The survey model was used, and the study group was comprising of 520 primary school students in a large city of Turkey. In the study, the Three-Dimensional Geometric Thinking Test, which is a paper and pencil test, was used to collect data. The scores taken from the test were compared across the grades and the relationships between the components of three-dimensional geometric thinking were examined. The findings showed that as the grades increased, students' scores taken from the Three-Dimensional Thinking Test also increased significantly. Moreover, a medium and positive correlation was found between the components of three-dimensional geometric thinking. The results of the study revealed that grade level is a significant variable on three-dimensional geometric thinking, yet some important three-dimensional geometric thinking skills can be developed independent from the grade level. The current study intends to shed light on the development of three-dimensional geometric thinking starting from early grades, and to provide important information for organizing the three-dimensional geometric content in the curriculum and its implementation.

14. Glucose intolerance as a consequence of hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction in offspring of obese mice

Abstract

Objective: Maternal obesity is increasingly common and negatively impacts offspring health. Children of mothers with obesity are at higher risk of developing diseases linked to hematopoietic system abnormalities and metabolism such as type 2 diabetes. Interestingly, disease risks are often dependent on the offspring's sex, suggesting sex-specific reprogramming effect of maternal obesity on offspring hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell (HSPC) function. However, the impact of maternal obesity exposure on offspring HSPC function, and the capability of HSPC to regulate offspring metabolic health is largely understudied. This study aims to test the hypothesis that offspring of obese mice exhibit sex-differences in HSPC function that affect offspring's metabolic health. Methods: We first assessed bone marrow hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell phenotype using postnatal day 21 (P21) and 8-week-old C57BL/6J mice born to control and diet-induced obese dams. We also sorted HSPC (Lineage-, Sca1+, cKit + cells) from P21 mice for competitive primary and secondary transplant, as well as transcriptomic analysis. Body weight, adiposity, insulin tolerance test and glucose tolerance tests were performed in primary and secondary transplant recipient animals. Results: We discovered sex-differences in offspring HSPC function in response to maternal obesity exposure, where male offspring of obese dams (MatOb) showed decreased HSPC numbers and engraftment, while female MatOb offspring remained largely unaffected. RNA-seq revealed immune stimulatory pathways in female MatOb offspring. Finally, only recipients of male MatOb offspring HSPC exhibited glucose intolerance. Conclusions: This study demonstrated the lasting effect of maternal obesity exposure on offspring HSPC function and implicates HSPC in metabolic regulation.

Nano-scale separation techniques (NSTs) offer significant advantages in relation to drug analysis in a wide range of samples. NSTs, including low flow rate LC systems or capillary or chip based electrophoresis/electrochromatography systems, have become the primary tool for advanced drug analysis, and indispensable technology for sensitive and selective drug analysis. In recent decades, significant advances have been achieved using NSTs for drug analysis. In this review, sample preparation strategies, new advances and applications in NSTs and the contribution toward forensic science applications were reported. In addition, some recent and selected applications with or without mass spectrometry (e.g., low resolution/high resolution -MS) are summarized.

Abstract

Objective: To compare the femoral artery and other ultrasonographic Doppler measurements between fetuses with late-onset fetal growth restriction and uncomplicated fetuses. Material and method: This prospective cohort study was conducted with 168 patients, including 83 pregnancies presenting with late-onset fetal growth restriction and 85 uncomplicated control pregnancies at similar gestational weeks. The study group was further divided into two according to the neonatal intensive care unit requirements. Demographic characteristics, obstetric characteristics, femoral artery and other ultrasonographic Doppler measurements, and pregnancy outcomes were compared between the groups. Results: Uterine artery pulsatility index, umbilical artery systolic/diastolic ratio, and peak systolic velocity of the middle cerebral artery were similar between the study and control groups. 25. Probing the electromagnetic properties of the neutrinos at future lepton colliders

Abstract

In this study, we explore the non-standard νν¯γγ couplings parametrized by dimension-seven operators via e+e−→νν¯γ process at the FCC-ee/CEPC and μ+μ−→νν¯γ process at the Muon Colliders. For the detailed Monte Carlo simulation, all signal and relevant background events are produced within the framework of Madgraph where non-standard νν¯γγ couplings are implemented. After passing through Pythia for parton showering and hadronization, detector effects are included via tuned corresponding detector cards for each collider in Delphes. Projected sensitivities on νν¯γγ couplings are obtained at a 5σ confidence level without and with 5% systematic uncertainties for the FCC-ee/CEPC and the Muon Colliders, showcasing the complementarity between lepton colliders. Our best limit on the anomalous νν¯γγ couplings even with 5% systematic uncertainties for muon collider with s=10 TeV and Lint=10 ab−1 are found to be fourteen orders of magnitude stronger than the upper bound obtained from rare decay Z→γγνν¯ analysis using LEP data.

26. Evaluating Augmented Reality as Evidence-Based Practice for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Single-Case Design Studies

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the augmented reality in children with autism spectrum disorder is an evidence-based practice. For this purpose, a systematic literature review was conducted for determining research that implemented the augmented reality. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. As a result of the review, nine single-case experimental design (SCED) research that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using the quality indicators. At the end of the quality evaluation, the effect size of eight SCED research that were determined to have evidence of a strong or adequate quality was calculated by using Tau-U. The results of the study revealed that the augmented reality was a promising and highly effective intervention (Tau U = 0.98) in teaching new skills for children with autism spectrum disorder.

28. MAP kinase ERK5 modulates cancer cell sensitivity to extrinsic apoptosis induced by death-receptor agonists

Abstract

Abstract Death receptor ligand TRAIL is a promising cancer therapy due to its ability to selectively trigger extrinsic apoptosis in cancer cells. However, TRAIL–based therapies in humans have shown limitations, mainly due inherent or acquired resistance of tumor cells. To address this issue, current efforts are focussed on dissecting the intracellular signaling pathways involved in resistance to TRAIL, to identify strategies that sensitize cancer cells to TRAIL-induced cytotoxicity. In this work, we describe the oncogenic MEK5-ERK5 pathway as a critical regulator of cancer cell resistance to the apoptosis induced by death receptor ligands. Using 2D and 3D cell cultures and transcriptomic analyses, we show that ERK5 controls the proteostasis of TP53INP2, a protein necessary for full activation of caspase-8 in response to TNFα, FasL or TRAIL. Mechanistically, ERK5 phosphorylates and induces ubiquitylation and proteasomal degradation of TP53INP2, resulting in cancer cell resistance to TRAIL. Concordantly, ERK5 inhibition or genetic deletion, by stabilizing TP53INP2, sensitizes cancer cells to the apoptosis induced by recombinant TRAIL and TRAIL/FasL expressed by Natural Killer cells. The MEK5-ERK5 pathway regulates cancer cell proliferation and survival, and ERK5 inhibitors have shown anticancer activity in preclinical models of solid tumors. Using endometrial cancer patient-derived xenograft organoids, we propose ERK5 inhibition as an effective strategy to sensitize cancer cells to TRAIL-based therapies.

32. An Explanation of Happiness with Secure Attachment, Basic Psychological Needs and Hope: The Case of Turkish University Students

Abstract

In this study we aimed to investigate the role of hope, secure attachment with the parents, and satisfaction levels of the basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) of university students in predicting their happiness levels. A total of 558 university students were recruited and 70% of them were female and 30% of them were male. Ages of the participants ranged from 18 to 29. The data were collected in classroom settings using personal information form, the Oxford Happiness Scale, the Attachment with the Parents Scale, the Basic Psychological Needs Scale, and the Dispositional Hope Scale. Results indicated that that the satisfaction levels of the competence needs were the most powerful predictor of happiness among university students. The satisfaction levels of autonomy, relatedness needs, and a secure attachment to the father, along with hope contributed little to the explanation of happiness; whereas, a secure attachment to the mother was not a predictor of happiness of the university students. The findings were discussed within the framework of the developmental characteristics of university students and the characteristics of collectivist societies.

Abstract

Abstract Objective To evaluate the fetal and maternal effects of the severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Methods Patients with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positivity (n = 55) were compared with cases with similar characteristics and PCR negativity (n = 53). The study group was further divided into two groups as severe (n = 11) and nonsevere (n = 44) coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The groups were compared in terms of clinical characteristics and perinatal outcomes. Results The study and control groups were similar in terms of maternal age, parity, gestational age at diagnosis, type of hypertensive disorders, magnesium sulfate administration rate, gestational age at birth, birth weight, Apgar scores, and maternal complications. However, all cases of fetal loss (n = 6) were observed in the SARS-CoV-2 positive group (p = 0.027). From the 6 cases, there were 5 in the nonsevere group and 1 patient in the severe SARS-CoV-2 positive group. Moreover, higher rates of maternal complications, lower oxygen saturation values, and intensive care unit admissions were observed in the severe COVID-19 group. Conclusion Physicians should be cautious about the management of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy cases with SARS-CoV-2 positivity. Fetal loss seems to be more common in cases with SARS-CoV-2 positivity and severe COVID-19 seems to be associated with higher rates of maternal complications. Close follow-up for fetal wellbeing and active management of severe cases in terms of maternal complications seem to be favorable.

Abstract A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract

Abstract Current practices in synthesizing molecularly imprinted polymers face challenges—lengthy process, low-productivity, the need for expensive and sophisticated equipment, and they cannot be controlled in situ synthesis. Herein, we present a micro-reactor for in situ and continuously synthesizing trillions of molecularly imprinted polymeric nanoparticles that contain molecular fingerprints of bovine serum albumin in a short period of time (5-30 min). Initially, we performed COMSOL simulation to analyze mixing efficiency with altering flow rates, and experimentally validated the platform for synthesizing nanoparticles with sizes ranging from 52-106 nm. Molecular interactions between monomers and protein were also examined by molecular docking and dynamics simulations. Afterwards, we benchmarked the micro-reactor parameters through dispersity and concentration of molecularly imprinted polymers using principal component analysis. Sensing assets of molecularly imprinted polymers were examined on a metamaterial sensor, resulting in 81% of precision with high selectivity (4.5 times), and three cycles of consecutive use. Overall, our micro-reactor stood out for its high productivity (48-288 times improvement in assay-time and 2 times improvement in reagent volume), enabling to produce 1.4-1.5 times more MIPs at one-single step, and continuous production compared to conventional strategy.

Abstract

Microbial colonization on various surfaces is a serious problem. Biofilms from these microbes pose serious health and economic threats. In addition, the recent global pandemic has also attracted great interest in the latest techniques and technology for antimicrobial surface coatings. Incorporating antimicrobial nanocompounds into materials to prevent microbial adhesion or kill microorganisms has become an increasingly challenging strategy. Recently, many studies have been conducted on the preparation of nanomaterials with antimicrobial properties against diseases caused by pathogens. Despite tremendous efforts to produce antibacterial materials, there is little systematic research on antimicrobial coatings. In this article, we set out to provide a comprehensive overview of nanomaterials-based antimicrobial coatings that can be used to stop the spread of contamination to surfaces. Typically, surfaces can be simple deposits of nanomaterials, embedded nanomaterials, as well as nanotubes, nanowires, nanocolumns, nanofibers, nanoneedles, and bio-inspired structures.
