1. Javanese Homo erectus on the move in SE Asia circa 1.8 Ma

Abstract: Abstract The migration of Homo erectus in Southeast Asia during Early Pleistocene is cardinal to our comprehension of the evolution of the genus Homo. However, the limited consideration of the rapidly changing physical environment, together with controversial datings of hominin bearing sites, make it challenging to secure the robust timeline needed to unveil the behavior of early humans. Here, we reappraise the first appearance datum of Javanese H. erectus by adding the most reliable age constraints based on cosmogenic nuclides $$^{10}$$ 10 Be and $$^{26}$$ 26 Al produced in situ to a compilation of earlier estimates. We find that H. erectus reached Java and dwelled at Sangiran, Java, ca. 1.8 Ma. Using this age as a baseline, we develop a probabilistic approach to reconstruct their dispersal routes, coupling ecological movement simulations to landscape evolution models forced by reconstructed geodynamic and climatic histories. We demonstrate that the hospitable terra firma conditions of Sundaland facilitated the prior dispersal of hominins to the edge of Java, where they conversely could not settle until the Javanese archipelago emerged from the sea and connected to Sundaland. The dispersal of H. erectus across Sundaland occurred over at least tens to hundreds kyr, a time scale over which changes in their physical environment, whether climatic or physiographic, may have become primary forcings on their behavior. Our comprehensive reconstruction method to unravel the peopling timeline of SE Asia provides a novel framework to evaluate the evolution of early humans.

Abstract: Abstract Cereals are a central resource for the human diet and are traditionally assumed to have evolved from wild grasses at the onset of the Neolithic under the pressure of agriculture. Here we demonstrate that cereals may have a significantly longer and more diverse lineage, based on the study of a 0–2.3 Ma, 601 m long sedimentary core from Lake Acıgöl (South-West Anatolia). Pollen characteristic of cereals is abundant throughout the sedimentary sequence. The presence of large lakes within this arid bioclimatic zone led to the concentration of large herbivore herds, as indicated by the continuous occurrence of coprophilous fungi spores in the record. Our hypothesis is that the effects of overgrazing on soils and herbaceous stratum, during this long period, led to genetic modifications of the Poaceae taxa and to the appearance of proto-cereals. The simultaneous presence of hominins is attested as early as about 1.4 Ma in the lake vicinity, and 1.8 Ma in Georgia and Levant. These ancient hominins probably benefited from the availability of these proto-cereals, rich in nutrients, as well as various other edible plants, opening the way, in this region of the Middle East, to a process of domestication, which reached its full development during the Neolithic.

Abstract: The ratio of cosmogenic 10Be and its stable isotope 9Be has been used as a proxy of long-term continental weathering fluxes and denudation rates, but transport processes of these isotopes from river water to estuarine water and seawater, as well as interference of potential anthropogenic source of 9Be on natural 10Be/9Be around populated estuaries are not well constrained. Here, we present results of 10Be and 9Be concentrations of dissolved and reactive particulate phase in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) and its eight major outlets. The concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Pb are also measured, allowing us to assess their contamination levels and anthropogenic source together with 9Be by the geo-accumulation index (Igeo–reac) and enrichment factor (EF). A wide distribution pattern of dissolved 10Be (137–1,194 at/gwater) and 9Be (0.781–8.31 × 10–12 g/gwater) among these outlets is observed. The distribution coefficients (Kd) of both isotopes between sediment and water are in the order of 105, and on average only 5% of 10Be exists as dissolved form. Compared with total meteoric 10Be deposited on the river basin, 23% of the meteoric 10Be is retained while 38% of 10Be finally escape the estuary and is transported into coastal seawater. Despite the high contamination levels of Cu and Cd, the lower Igeo–reac and EF values of 9Be indicate that 9Be is hardly polluted by anthropogenic source. Thus, the 10Be/9Be in the PRE area is mainly associated with natural processes instead of human activities.

5. Culturing Ancient Bacteria Carrying Resistance Genes from Permafrost and Comparative Genomics with Modern Isolates

Abstract: Long considered to be a consequence of human antibiotics use by deduction, antibiotic resistance mechanisms appear to be in fact a much older phenomenon as antibiotic resistance genes have previously been detected from millions of year-old permafrost samples. As these specimens guarantee the viability of archaic bacteria, we herein propose to apply the culturomics approach to recover the bacterial content of a Siberian permafrost sample dated, using the in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclide chlorine36 (36Cl), at 2.7 million years to study the dynamics of bacterial evolution in an evolutionary perspective. As a result, we cultured and sequenced the genomes of 28 ancient bacterial species including one new species. To perform genome comparison between permafrost strains and modern isolates we selected 7 of these species (i.e., Achromobacter insolitus, Bacillus idriensis, Brevundimonas aurantiaca, Janibacter melonis, Kocuria rhizophila, Microbacterium hydrocarbonoxydans and Paracoccus yeei). We observed a high level of variability in genomic content with a percentage of shared genes in the core genomes ranging from 21.23% to 55.59%. In addition, the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) comparison between permafrost and modern strains for the same species did not allow a dating of ancient strains based on genomic content. There were no significant differences in antibiotic resistance profiles between modern and ancient isolates of each species. Acquired resistance to antibiotics was phenotypically detected in all gram-negative bacterial species recovered from permafrost, with a significant number of genes coding for antibiotic resistance detected. Taken together, these findings confirm previously obtained data that antibiotic resistance predates humanity as most of antimicrobial agents are natural weapons used in inter-microbial conflicts within the biosphere.

Abstract: The first arrivals of hominin populations into Eurasia during the Early Pleistocene are currently considered to have occurred as short and poorly dated biological dispersions. Questions as to the tempo and mode of these early prehistoric settlements have given rise to debates concerning the taxonomic significance of the lithic assemblages, as trace fossils, and the geographical distribution of the technological traditions found in the Lower Palaeolithic record. Here, we report on the Barranc de la Boella site which has yielded a lithic assemblage dating to ∼1 million years ago that includes large cutting tools (LCT). We argue that distinct technological traditions coexisted in the Iberian archaeological repertoires of the late Early Pleistocene age in a similar way to the earliest sub-Saharan African artefact assemblages. These differences between stone tool assemblages may be attributed to the different chronologies of hominin dispersal events. The archaeological record of Barranc de la Boella completes the geographical distribution of LCT assemblages across southern Eurasia during the EMPT (Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition, circa 942 to 641 kyr). Up to now, chronology of the earliest European LCT assemblages is based on the abundant Palaeolithic record found in terrace river sequences which have been dated to the end of the EMPT and later. However, the findings at Barranc de la Boella suggest that early LCT lithic assemblages appeared in the SW of Europe during earlier hominin dispersal episodes before the definitive colonization of temperate Eurasia took place.

Abstract: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo estudar os fatores controladores da evolução do relevo de um trecho do interflúvio entre a bacia interiorana do rio Grande, um dos formadores do rio Paraná, e a bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul. Este divisor hidrográfico está contido em uma das porções mais elevadas da Serra da Mantiqueira e coincide com o flanco NNW do Rift Continental do Sudeste do Brasil. Para este estudo foram selecionadas nove sub-bacias localizadas no extremo sul de Minas Gerais, entre os municípios de Itamonte e Bocaina de Minas. Essas sub-bacias tiveram suas taxas denudacionais estimadas pela mensuração da produção do isótopo cosmogênico 10Be em sedimentos fluviais. Os resultados mostram que a taxa média de denudação das sub-bacias do rio Paraíba do Sul, voltadas para o gráben (17,39 m/Ma), é superior a das sub-bacias dos rios Grande e Aiuruoca, voltadas para o interior continental (12,24 m/Ma). Entre os fatores controladores das taxas de denudação, se destaca a boa correlação existente entre as taxas e dois parâmetros morfométricos: amplitude de relevo e declividade média das sub-bacias. A influência da litologia também se mostra importante, já que a resistência dos granitos frente aos processos erosivos é um dos fatores que condiciona taxas denudacionais bastante baixas na área. Os resultados indicam que o granito Maromba é a unidade litológica mais resistente entre aquelas presentes nas sub-bacias amostradas. As baixas taxas mensuradas, referentes às últimas dezenas de milhares de anos, contrastam com o relevo rejuvenescido e com as elevadas altitudes desse setor da Mantiqueira, onde há um reconhecido papel da neotectônica na morfogênese. Deste modo, é provável que tenha havido uma atenuação da atividade tectônica no Quaternário Superior, com a consequente estabilização dos níveis de base e diminuição dos processos denudacionais.

Abstract: Escarpamentos na forma de degraus do relevo e que limitam duas diferentes bacias hidrográficas são comuns no leste de Minas Gerais. O presente trabalho investigou a evolução do que delimita as bacias hidrográficas do rio Doce (porção leste e inferior da escarpa) com a bacia hidrográfica do rio Paraná (porção oeste e superior da escarpa) via mensuração das taxas quaternárias de desnudação através do isótopo cosmogênico 10Be. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que as taxas de desnudação mensuradas possuem íntima relação com a compartimentação do relevo, sendo baixas no planalto superior (bacia hidrográfica do rio Paraná), médias na porção deste planalto superior que foi capturado para a bacia hidrográfica do rio Doce e altas na escarpa. Permitem ainda compreender que o relevo regional evoluí através de um duplo front de regressão: o primeiro se caracteriza pelo recuo da escarpa e o segundo, localizado mais a oeste, pelas capturas fluviais. Neste contexto, comprova-se a retração do escarpamento para oeste, fato que faz com que a bacia hidrográfica do rio Doce ganhe área em detrimento da bacia hidrográfica do rio Paraná.

Abstract: The paper by E. Mendez-Quintas et al. (2020) aims to give an interdisciplinary overview of the lower Mino River terrace record in NW Iberia by combining geological and archaeological data. The authors also pretend to re-interpret the geological-geomorphological evolution of this river by presenting new data and by comparing them to data published in our five related papers. However, a wrong interpretation of the data they present as well as incorrect and selective citations of ours lead to the production of a publication containing numerous errors. The most flagrant ones are the mapping of fluvial terraces on one side of the river only and an incorrect interpretation of the sedimentological information used to correlate terrace remnants along-river. This results in incorrect longitudinal profile reconstructions and an improper proposal of the evolution of the Mino terraces that is even contradicted by the data they present. On the upside, the ages of the Porto Maior terrace site published by these authors confirm our previously published longitudinal profile reconstructions and evolutionary model of the Mino valley.

Abstract: The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is a key component of the global climate system. However, our current understanding of the spatio-temporal oscillations and landscape transformation of the GrIS margins since the last glacial cycle is still incomplete. The objective of this work is to study the deglaciation of the Zackenberg Valley (74°N, 20°E), NE Greenland, and the origin of the derived landforms. Based on extensive fieldwork and high-detail geomorphological mapping we identified the different types of landforms, from which those of glacial and paraglacial origin were used to understand the processes driving regional environmental evolution. We applied cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating to 32 samples taken from erosive and depositional glacial landforms distributed across the valley. Geomorphological evidence shows that >800-m-thick Late Quaternary glacier filled the valleys and fjords and covered mountain summits. In subsequent phases, as ice thickness decreased, the glacier was limited to the interior of the valley, leaving several lateral moraines. The deglaciation of the Zackenberg Valley that started by ~13.7–12.5 ka also accelerated slope paraglacial processes. Many blocks from lateral moraines were remobilized and fell, reaching the valley floor where they covered the thinning glacier tongue; transforming it into a debris-covered glacier that subsequently melted gradually. By ca. 10.5 ka, the last remnants of glacial ice disappeared from the Zackenberg Valley floor, a chronology of deglaciation that is similar to that observed in other sites across NE Greenland. The results of this work must be considered in similar studies, reinforcing the need to support CRE ages of the different geomorphological phases with paleoclimatic data from other sedimentary records.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this work is to study the process of transformation of debris-free mountain glaciers into debris-covered glaciers and rock glaciers, and to examine the factors driving diverging evolution in similar glacial systems. The study area is the Hofsdalur valley, in the Trollaskagi peninsula (northern Iceland), where several cirques host a great diversity of glaciers and rock glaciers as well as various glacial landforms. Four adjacent cirques have been analysed through a multidisciplinary approach: geomorphological analysis, boulder surface displacement tracking, quantification of recent glacier changes, three dimensional palaeoglacier reconstruction, equilibrium-line altitude calculations and relative and direct dating methods applied to surface boulders. Dating methods included in situ Cl-36 cosmic-ray exposure dating, Schmidt hammer weathering measurements and lichenometric dating. The results confirm that glaciers in Hofsdalur followed an evolution pattern similar to that observed in other cirques in the Trollaskagi peninsula. During the Younger Dryas (12.9-11.7 ka) many of those cirques hosted debris-free glaciers, whose retreat started in the early Holocene. Distinct retreat dynamics and cirque floor elevation conditioned the subsequent glacial evolution. In some Trollaskagi cirques, the ice completely covered the headwalls, which consequently did not supply debris onto the glacier surface, which remained debris-free. In most of these cirques, however, glacier retreat enhanced paraglacial processes and the ice-free cirque walls generated a high debris supply onto the glacier surface. As a result, the glaciers evolved towards debris-covered glaciers or rock glaciers, depending on the local topographical setting. In the lower cirques they collapsed immediately after their formation. At higher altitudes, above the lower permafrost limit, these ice-cored landforms have survived until the present day, but they have been stagnant since the Holocene Thermal Maximum, while the heads of these cirques have hosted debris-free glaciers during the Late Holocene.

Abstract: The Kerguelen Archipelago (49°S, 69°E) is an excellent location for the study of multi-millennial glacier fluctuations, since it is the largest still glaciated emerged area (552 km2 in 2001) in the sub-Antarctic sector of the Indian Ocean, where many glacio-geomorphological formations such as moraines may be dated. To investigate the so-far little-known Late Glacial and the Holocene glacier fluctuations in Kerguelen, we apply cosmogenic nuclide dating of moraines in 3 glacial valleys: Val Travers valley, Ampere glacier valley and Arago glacier valley. We use in situ 36Cl dating of the basaltic moraine boulders at the first two sites, and 10Be dating of the quartz-bearing syenite boulders at the third site. The new 36Cl and 10Be exposure ages provide time constraints over the last 17,000 years. A glacial advance was highlighted during the Late Glacial at 14.4 ± 1.4 ka ago, probably linked to the Antarctic Cold Reversal event. These results are consistent with those previously obtained on the archipelago (Jomelli et al., 2017, 2018; Charton et al., 2020) and more generally those from other the sub-Antarctic regions (e.g. Sagredo et al., 2018). This suggests that all glaciers at this latitude were broadly sensitive to this specific climatic signal. No Early nor Mid Holocene advances were evidenced in Kerguelen glacier evolution during the Holocene due to missing moraines that may have formed in these specific periods. Radiocarbon-dated peat, published in the 1990s, provides evidence of less extensive glacier extents during the Early Holocene than during the Late Holocene (Frenot et al., 1997). Finally, glaciers seem to have re-advanced only during the Late Holocene, especially within the last millennium, at ⁓1 ka, ⁓620 years and ⁓390 years (Verfaillie et al., submitted). A comparison of this new dataset with the available 10Be ages from other sub-Antarctic regions allows for the identification of 3 different glacier evolution patterns during the Holocene. The glacial fluctuations experienced by Kerguelen glaciers seems particularly uncommon, and are likely due to its singular location in the Southern Indian Ocean. Finally, climatic factors that may explain the Kerguelen glacier evolution (temperature, precipitation) are discussed. Abstract: The Cook Ice Cap (CIC) on the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Islands recently experienced extremely negative surface mass balance. Further deglaciation could have important impacts on endemic and invasive fauna and flora. To put this exceptional glacier evolution into a multi-centennial-scale context, we refined the evolution of the CIC over the last millennium, investigated the associated climate conditions and explored its potential evolution by 2100 ce. A glaciological model, constrained by cosmic ray exposure dating of moraines, historical documents and recent direct mass balance observations, was used to simulate the ice-cap extents during different phases of advance and retreat between the last millennium and 2100 ce. Cosmogenic dating suggests glacial advance around the early Little Ice Age (LIA), consistent with findings from other sub-Antarctic studies, and the rather cold and humid conditions brought about by the negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM). This study contributes to our currently limited understanding of palaeoclimate for the early LIA in the southern Indian Ocean. Glaciological modelling and observations confirm the recent decrease in CIC extent linked to the intensification of the SAM. Although affected by large uncertainties, future simulations suggest a complete disappearance of CIC by the end of the century.

Abstract: Reconstructions of the global production rate of the cosmogenic isotope 10Be from sedimentary records of authigenic 10Be/9Be ratios have been successfully used to obtain independent estimates of geomagnetic dipole moment variations caused by field excursions or reversals. In this study, we assess the reliability of 10Be/9Be as a proxy for the cosmogenic 10Be production rate by evaluating two potential biasing sources represented by sediment composition and climatic modulation. For this purpose, we compare five high-resolution 10Be/9Be records of the Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) field reversal from sediment cores of the Indian, West Pacific, and North Atlantic oceans. Significant increase of 10Be/9Be ratios at ∼ 774 ka is explained in terms of the dominant control of geomagnetic modulation during the M-B reversal. Results do not support the existence of a direct proportionality between measured sedimentary 10Be/9Be ratio and cosmogenic 10Be production rate, as shown by 10Be/9Be records that offset relative to each other during and outside the M-B reversal. Residual differences between offset-corrected rescaled records do not appear to be related to an incomplete correction of variable sediment scavenging efficiencies by 9Be normalization. Instead, these differences can be explained by a common climatic modulation model, assuming a linear relation between 10Be/9Be and the global 10Be production rate with site- and time-dependent additive and multiplicative coefficients. These coefficients are linear functions of a single global climate proxy identified with the benthic δ 18 O record. Additive coefficients are almost constant in time and can represent up to ∼ 60% of the average 10Be/9Be value during periods of stable field polarity. Multiplicative coefficients are also site-specific, with mean values representing the bulk scavenging efficiency of the site, and variations about this mean expressing a multiplicative climatic modulation of the 10Be production rate. The amplitude of this modulation amounts to 10–15% of the maximum variations recorded during the M-B reversal and is sufficiently large to mask minor variations of the dipole moment during stable polarity periods. Reconstructions of the geomagnetic dipole intensity can benefit from the information about climatic modulation effects gained with our modelling approach. Best suited sites for magnetic field reconstructions should be characterized by minimal Be-recycling contributions from ancient 10Be reservoirs and minimal climatic modulation, as far as it can be determined from relative comparisons with other records. These conditions are most likely encountered in open basins at sites (1) with 2.8 km water depth, (2) > 200 km offshore, and (3) located underneath a large current system extending over regions with minimum terrigenous inputs. Scaling all records with respect to a chosen reference enables to produce 10Be/9Be stacks with reduced noise and short-term local environmental effects. Differences between stacks obtained in this manner highlight global climatic effects that need to be considered when generating calibrated reconstructions of the geomagnetic dipole moment.

Abstract: International audience; 10 Be-derived catchment-wide denudation rates are positively correlated with topographic indices in the southern Longmen Shan.  Erosion rates are consistent over short-and long-term timescales across the Longmen Shan, suggesting an exhumational steady state.  Rock uplift pattern and topographic evolution across the Longmen Shan have been largely controlled by upper crustal shortening and fault geometry.

Abstract: Denudation is one of the main processes that shapes landscapes. Because temperature, precipitation and glacial extents are key factors involved in denudation, climatic fluctuations are thought to exert a strong control on this parameter over geological timescales. However, the direct impacts of climatic variations on denudation remain controversial, particularly those involving the Quaternary glacial cycles in mountain environments. Here we measure in situ cosmogenic 10Be concentration in quartz in marine turbidites of two high-resolution cores collected in the Mediterranean Sea, providing a near-continuous (temporal resolution of ~1–2 kyr) reconstruction of denudation in the Southern Alps since 75 kyr ago (ka). This high-resolution palaeo-denudation record can be compared with well-constrained climatic variations over the last glacial cycle. Our results indicate that total denudation rates were approximately two times higher than present during the Last Glacial Maximum (26.5–19 ka), the glacial component of the denudation rates being $$1.5_{ - 1.0}^{ + 0.9}$$ mm yr−1. However, during moderately glaciated times (74–29 ka), denudation rates were similar to those today (0.24 ± 0.04 mm yr−1). This suggests a nonlinear forcing of climate on denudation, mainly controlled by the interplay between glacier velocity and basin topography. Hence, the onset of Quaternary glaciations, 2.6 million years ago, did not necessarily induce a synchronous global denudation pulse. Constraints on the denudation of the Southern Alps over the last glacial cycle indicate a nonlinear influence of climate on landscape evolution in glaciated areas, according to a beryllium isotope record measured from quartz in a sequence of Mediterranean turbidites.

However, little is known about their long-term response to multi-millennial climate variability, in particular in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we provide first insights into the response of a debris-covered glacier to multi-millennial climate variability in the sub-Antarctic Kerguelen Archipelago, which can be compared to that of recently investigated debris-free glaciers. We focus on the Gentil Glacier and present thirteen new 36 Cl cosmic-ray exposure ages from moraine boulders. The Gentil Glacier experienced at least two glacial advancesthe first one during the Late Glacial (19.0-11.6 ka) at ~14.3 ka and the second one during the Late Holocene at ~2.6 ka. Both debris-covered and debris-free glaciers advanced broadly synchronously during the Late Glacial, most probably during the Antarctic Cold Reversal event (14.5-12.9 ka). This suggests that both glacier types at Kerguelen were sensitive to abrupt temperature changes recorded in Antarctic ice cores, associated with increased moisture. However, during the late Holocene, the advance at about ~2.6 ka was not observed in other glaciers and seems to be an original feature of the debris-covered Gentil Glacier, either related to distinct dynamics or distinct sensitivity to precipitation changes.

Abstract: International audience; Despite a wealth of recent studies dealing with the evolution of the drainage network in the uplifted Ardennes massif (E. Belgium), especially from the Middle Pleistocene onwards, the Ardennian landscape evolution and long-term incision rates in the Meuse catchment remain poorly documented over the whole Plio-Quaternary. Alluvium-ﬁlled multilevel cave systems represent a relevant setting to unravel the Late Cenozoic history of regional river incision. We present here a dataset of 26 Al/ 10 Be concentration data obtained from ﬁfteen pebble samples washed into the Chawresse system, one of the largest multi-level cave systems of Belgium, which developed in Devonian limestones of the lower Ourthe Valley, the main Ardennian tributary of the Meuse. The sample collection spans an elevation difference higher than 120 m and their depleted 26Al/10Be ratios yield burial ages ranging from ~0.25 to 3.28 Ma. After critical assessment of our dataset for intra-karstic reworking issues, the most striking outcome of the obtained burial ages is the acceleration by a factor ﬁve of the incision rates (from ~30to ~150 m/Ma) during the ﬁrst half of the Middle Pleistocene. Integrating this incision peak and our pre-burial denudation rates, we then revisit the existing framework of Plio-Quaternary denudation and river incision in the Ardennian Meuse catchment. Whilst our 26Al/10Be concentration data shed new light on the temporal andspatial variability of the local river and hillslope system response to coupled tectonic and climatic forcings, it simultaneously highlights sampling issues and the need for further chronological data.

Abstract: International audience; The respective impacts of Northern and Southern Hemispheric climatic changes on the Tropics during the last deglaciation remain poorly understood. In the High Tropical Andes, the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR, 14.3-12.9 ka BP) is better represented among morainic records than the Younger Dryas (12.9-11.7 ka BP). However, in the Altiplano basin (Bolivia), two cold periods of the Northern Hemisphere (Heinrich Stadial 1a, 16.5-14.5 ka BP, and the Younger Dryas) are synchronous with (i) major advances or standstills of paleoglaciers and (ii) the highstands of giant paleolakes Tauca and Coipasa. Here, we present new cosmic ray exposure (CRE) ages from glacial landforms of the Bolivian Andes that formed during the last deglaciation (Termination 1). We reconstruct the equilibrium line altitudes (ELA) associated with each moraine and use them in an inverse algorithm combining paleoglaciers and paleolake budgets to derive temperature and precipitation during the last deglaciation. Our temperature reconstruction (ΔT relative to present day) yields a consistent regional trend of progressive warming from ΔT = −5 to −2.5°C during 17-14.5 ka BP, followed by a return to colder conditions around −4°C during the ACR (14.5-12.9 ka BP). The Coipasa highstand (12.9-11.8 ka BP) is coeval with another warming trend followed by ΔT stabilization at the onset of the Holocene (ca. 10 ka BP), around −3°C. Our results suggest that, during the last deglaciation (20-10 ka BP) atmospheric temperatures in the Tropical Andes mimicked Antarctic variability, whereas precipitation over the Altiplano was driven by changes in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract: International audience; Late Cenozoic landscape evolution in intracratonic basins represents an illustrative example of the interaction between surface processes, climate, lithologic and tectonics factors. Here, we model the transition from endorheic to exorheic conditions for the intracratonic Madrid Basin (Tagus Basin, Central Spain). During the Late Cenozoic, this basin appears to have been the result of a prolonged period of similar to 4.0 Ma of headward erosion by the Atlantic external drainage system, local erosion and climatic oscillations. Determining the timing of this transition is crucial to understanding the principal mechanisms of the transition course of the intracratonic basins in or associated with pop-up ridges. We present a detailed geomorphic map of the north of the Tertiary Madrid basin and new age determinations of well-preserved pediments, alluvial fans, alluvial plains and strath terraces. By combining cosmogenic Be-10-Al-26-Ne-21 with magnetostratigraphic data, the sediments associated with the last endorheic phase yield an age of similar to 6.4 Ma. The earliest exorheic alluvial levels of the Madrid Cenozoic basin, explained here as the first fluvial terraces, have been dated through cosmogenic nuclides depth profiles (Be-10-Al-26) at 2.42 Ma and 2.36 Ma respectively.

Abstract: International audience; Long considered to be a consequence of human antibiotics use by deduction, antibiotic resistance mechanisms appear to be in fact a much older phenomenon as antibiotic resistance genes have previously been detected from millions of year-old permafrost samples. As these specimens guarantee the viability of archaic bacteria, we herein propose to apply the culturomics approach to recover the bacterial content of a Siberian permafrost sample dated, using the in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclide chlorine36 (36 Cl), at 2.7 million years to study the dynamics of bacterial evolution in an evolutionary perspective. As a result, we cultured and sequenced the genomes of 28 ancient bacterial species including one new species. To perform genome comparison between permafrost strains and modern isolates we selected 7 of these species (i.e., Achromobacter insolitus, Bacillus idriensis, Brevundimonas aurantiaca, Janibacter melonis, Kocuria rhizophila, Microbacterium hydrocarbonoxydans and Paracoccus yeei). We observed a high level of variability in genomic content with a percentage of shared genes in the core genomes ranging from 21.23% to 55.59%. In addition, the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) comparison between permafrost and modern strains for the same species did not allow a dating of ancient strains based on genomic content. There were no significant differences in antibiotic resistance profiles between modern and ancient isolates of each species. Acquired resistance to antibiotics was phenotypically detected in all gram-negative bacterial species recovered from permafrost, with a significant number of genes coding for antibiotic resistance detected. Taken together, these findings confirm previously obtained data that antibiotic resistance predates humanity as most of antimicrobial agents are natural weapons used in inter-microbial conflicts within the biosphere.

Abstract: International audience; Coarse debris accumulations cover large areas in high latitude and mountain environments, but their age and origin remain mostly unknown. Here we reassess the morphology of a prominent coarse debris accumulation in the Sudetes Mountain range in central Europe and constrain its timing with 10Be surface exposure data. Our observations indicate that the landform in the south-eastern slope of the Suť ridge appears consistent with the morphology of a block slope. The oldest minimum age of 150.1 ± 4.8 ka obtained for the tor at the upper limit of the block slope indicates the disintegration of the ridge and surface lowering under periglacial conditions prior to the last glacial-interglacial cycle. Four exposure ages retrieved for block samples range from 84.3 ± 3.8 to 26.8 ± 2.6 ka, providing evidence for block emplacement during the last cold period. The exposure ages extend existing chronological dataset for peri/glacial landforms in the Sudetes and constrain the timing of cold environments in the area prior the Last Glacial Maximum. The ages are also consistent with surface exposure data reported for block fields and block slopes in Western Europe and confirm the formation of similar landforms over the last glacial period in the Sudetes.

Abstract: Sediment accumulation rates and thermal trackers suggest a substantial and global increase in erosion rates over the past few million years. That increase is commonly associated with the impact of the Northern Hemisphere glaciation, but methodological biases have led researchers to debate this hypothesis. Here, we test whether Himalayan erosion rates increased by measuring beryllium-10 (10Be) in the sediment of the Bengal Bay seabed. Sediment originated from rocks that produced 10Be under the impact of cosmic rays during erosion near surface. Thus, the 10Be concentrations indicate erosion rates. The 10Be concentration of the Bengal Bay sediment depends on the contributions of the Ganga and Brahmaputra rivers. Their sediments have distinct 10Be concentrations because of distinct elevations and erosion in their drainage basins. Variable contributions could thus complicate erosion-rate calculation. We traced these contributions by a provenance study using the strontium (Sr) and neodymium (Nd) isotopic sediment compositions. Within uncertainties of ±30%, our reconstructed past erosion rates show no long-term increase for the past six million years. This stability suggests that climatic changes during the late Cenozoic have an undetectable impact on the erosion patterns in the Himalayas, at least on the ten thousand to million year timescales accounted for by our dataset. Long-term Himalayan erosion rates remained stable through the global climatic changes of the past six million years, according to the cosmogenic nuclide composition of terrestrial sediments recovered from the Bay of Bengal.

Abstract: International audience; Estimating the extent and age of the last glacial maxima as well as the chronology of glacial recessions in various environmental contexts is key to source-to-sink studies and paleoclimate reconstructions. The Argentera-Mercantour massif being located at the transition between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, its deglaciation chronology can be compared to the sediment budget of the Var River marine delta. In this paper, the deglaciation is constrained by 13 new and 22 reassessed Cosmic-Ray Exposure (CRE) 10Be datings of moraines and polished crystalline bedrocks. These data allow for the first time to fully reconstruct the deglaciation history at the scale of the entire massif, in agreement with a major glacier recession at ca. 15 ka, at the onset of Bølling transition. This contribution reveals a glacier–climate relationship more sensitive to warming phases in the southern Alps highlighted by a major decrease of glaciers after ca. 15 ka. This major deglaciation is correlated with a 2.5 fold decrease of sediment discharge of rivers into the Mediterranean Sea. Main deglaciation of the massif upper slopes (2,700-2,800 m a.s.l.) occurred after the LGM at 20.8-18.6 ka, followed by the lower slopes (2,300 m a.s.l.) at 15.3-14.2 ka. Finally, the flat polished surfaces above 2,600 m a.s.l. and the zones confined within narrow lateral valleys were likely affected by progressive ice melting of remaining debris covered glaciers and moraine erosion following the Younger Dryas re-advance stage between 12 and 8-9 ka. At lower elevations, a sediment core in the Vens Lake located at 2,300 m a.s.l., shows onset of lake sedimentation at ca. 14 ka and a transition towards a vegetated environment after 8 ka. Final stabilization of moraines occurred at 5 ka, which might reflect denudation acceleration during the Holocene humid phase.

Abstract: The central part of the Western Andes holds an exceptional concentration of giant paleolandslides involving very large volumes of rock material (v > km3). While those gravitational slope failures are interpreted consensually as an erosional response to the geodynamic activity of the Andes (relief formation and tectonic activity), the question of their triggering mechanisms remains enigmatic. To clarify the respective roles of climatic versus seismic forcing on the Andean landslides, new temporal constraints on paleo movements are essential. Here, we focus on one of those giant slope failures, the Aricota giant rockslide that damned the Locumba valley in southern Peru. We conducted fieldwork, high-resolution DEM analysis and cosmogenic nuclide dating to decipher its development history and failure mechanisms. Our results point to the occurrence of two successive events. A giant failure mobilizing a rock volume of ca. 2 km3 first produced a dam at 17.9 ± 0.7 ka. Considering its height of ca. 600 m, the Aricota rockslide dam is one of the three largest landslide dams worldwide. At 12.1 ± 0.2 ka, a second event produced ca. 0.2 km3 of material, and the rock-avalanche debris spread out over the dam. As the chronology of those two events is pointing to the two main paleoclimatic pluvial periods in this region (Heinrich Stadial 1a and Younger Dryas), we favor the interpretation of a climatic forcing. At a regional scale, the concomitant aggradation of alluvial terraces and fan systems along the nearby valleys highlights higher regional erosion, sediments supply and mass-wasting events during those paleoprecipitation events and strengthens this conclusion.

Abstract: International audience; The $^{10}$Be, $^{137}$Cs and $^{210}$Pb$_{xs}$ radionuclide fallout has been used for the last several decades to quantify various soil and geomorphological processes and their rates, on different time scales. However, a basic assumption of the studies relying on these radionuclides is that they have a strong affinity for soil particles and that their mobility in soil solution and losses through leaching can be neglected. Another area of the scientific literature deals with the radionuclide mobility in soils as solute. In that context, the objective of this work is to determine the pedological conditions under which this hypothesis of poor solute mobility of radionuclides is valid. To this end, meteoric $^{10}$Be, $^{137}$Cs and $^{210}$Pb$_{xs}$ concentrations were measured in six soil profiles representative of 5 soil types contrasted in terms of physico-chemical properties: an Andosol and a Luvisol under pasture, a Ferralsol and a Leptosol under forest and a Podzol both under forest and cultivation. Abstract: International audience; Documenting accurately amplitude and rhythms of geomagnetic variations is a prerequisite to understand the mechanisms triggering geomagnetic excursions and reversals. We present new authigenic 10Be/9Be ratio (Be ratio) results covering the 60-20 ka time interval from equatorial core MD05-2920. The most significant Be ratio peak is located 18 cm above the main relative paleointensity (RPI) minimum recorded in this sequence. These are interpreted as two independent recordings of the geomagnetic dipole moment (GDM) decrease linked to the Laschamp excursion dated at ca 41 ka. The stratigraphic offset is assignable to post-depositional magnetization lock-in processes resulting in time delay of 1.6 ka. The Be ratio and RPI records show comparable asymmetric behavior before and after the dipole low. The Be ratio record is combined with three other series to construct a global record of 10Be paleoproduction variations. This compilation demonstrates the strong coherence of low and mid latitudes data sets and its comparison with 10Be-flux records from polar regions fully supports the hypothesis of a global atmospheric 10Be production doubling during the Laschamp. The Be ratio stack is converted in terms of GDM using both a theoretical model and a reconstruction of GDM values using absolute paleointensities measured on lava flows. Both methods provide similar results. The dipole moment record derived from this approach (BeDM 20-60) shows the following characteristics: high field values (> 11 × 1022 Am2) prior to a sharp two-steps dipole decrease until reaching minimum values (1.8 ± 0.7 × 1022 Am2) between 41.6 and 40.9 ka at the time of the Laschamp excursion. The GDM partly recovers up to values of ∼ 6.3 × 1022 Am2 , and oscillates in this range, without showing any sharp decreases that could be associated with excursions reported within the 38-20 ka time interval (e.g. the Mono Lake excursion).

Abstract: International audience; Despite increasing knowledge on the orogenic phases of the Pyrenees, the Neogene evolution of the range remains poorly constrained. The central Pyrenees, particularly the Ariège River valley and its terrace systems and glacial extensions, are key to reconstructing Pyrenean evolution during the Neogene. However, few terrace relics remain on the piedmont edges. To overcome this limitation and temporally extend the dataset obtained from terraces, we focus on alluvium-filled horizontal epiphreatic passages developed in limestone karstic networks. These landforms record the transient position of former local base levels during the process of valley deepening, similar to fluvial terraces. The alluvium fills of the studied caves in the Tarascon-sur-Ariège area, in the transition zone between the upper range and the piedmont, therefore enable the reconstruction of the geodynamic evolution of the Ariège River valley. All studied caves are developed on at least eight levels. Based on burial durations determined by 26Al/10Be and 10Be/21Ne terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide dating of samples from epiphreatic levels, our results indicate Langhian to Messinian (~13–5 Ma) incision rates averaging 48 m Myr−1. However, the obtained record does not allow us to accurately retrace the Pliocene evolution of the area due to the lack of known caves at corresponding levels. Moreover, raised local base levels during glacial phases both make the record more complex and call into question the methodological approach in terms of potential internal sediment remobilization and mixing related to implied re-flooding periods.

Abstract: Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Constraining the age of young lavas, which generally fall outside the effective range of traditional geochronologymethods, remains a key challenge in volcanology, limiting the development of high-resolution eruption chronologies.We present an in situ cosmogenic3He and36Cl surface-exposure chronology, alongside new minimum-limiting14Cages,documenting young eruptions at five sites in the Western Cordillera, southern Peru. Four3He-dated lavas on the NevadoCoropuna volcanic complex (hitherto thought to be dormant) indicate that the central dome cluster is young and potentiallyactive; two Holocene lavas on the easternmost dome are the youngest directly dated lavas in Peru to date. East ofCoropuna, lava domes and block-lava flows represent the most extensive output to date of Nevado Sabancaya, one ofPeru’s most active volcanoes. Two3He measurements confirm the Holocene age of these deposits and expand thechronology for one of the youngest major lava fields in Peru.36Cl surface-exposure ages from the Purupurini dome clusterand Nevado Casiri document middle-late-Holocene episodes of effusive activity, while basal14C ages from a lava-dammed wetland constrain an effusive eruption at Mina Arcata, north of Coropuna, to the late-glacial period. Thesenew data advance the recent Western Cordillera volcanic record whilst demonstrating both the considerable potentialand fundamental limitations of cosmogenic surface-exposure methods for such applications.

Abstract: International audience; Along the Angolan coast, the Early Paleolithic sites of Dungo IV and V (Baia Farta, Benguela) have delivered a rich pre-Acheulean lithic industry testifying the antiquity of the horninin settlement in western Africa despite the current absence of any hominin fossil in the area. In Dungo IV, the Paleolithic level is located on a conglomeratic paleo-beach (104 m a.s.l.) buried under an at least 3 m thick sandy layer. In Dungo V, two unearthed large whale fossils are associated with numerous lithic tools intimately mixed with the whale bones. This is the oldest evidence of stranded marine mammal scavenging by hominins in this part of Africa. The lack of volcanism and fossils makes chronological constrain difficult. Considering its configuration, the Dungo IV site may be relevant for a dating based on both the Be-10 and Al-26 cosmogenic nuclides. For this purpose, a depth profile all along the sandy layer overlying the archeological layer has been sampled. Statistical treatments performed on the Al-26/Be-10 PU/Be ratios obtained for the depth profile demonstrate that they all belong to the same population. If we consider that the samples have always been at or close to their sampling depth, the regression modeling allows computing that the surface sedimentary layer has been emplaced at least 614 ka ago and less than 662 ka ago. On the other hand, if we consider that the surface deposit has been truncated, burial durations ranging from 585 ka to 786 ka and truncations lower than 4 m result from the modeling of the evolution of the Be-10 and Al-26 concentrations as a function of depth. The analyses of four pre-Acheulean artefacts lead to a minimum burial duration of 730 ka and a maximum burial duration of 2.11 Ma. The low pre-burial denudation rates modeled from the data acquired for the stone tools as well as for the overlying layer (1-16 m.Ma(-1)) imply large inherited Al-26 and Be-10 concentrations. The post-depositional maximum denudation rate of 71 m.Ma(-1) associated with both the lithic artefacts and the surface sedimentary layer (considering that the samples have always been at or close to their sampling depth) as well as the deduced maximum uplift rate of similar to 170 m.Ma(-1) are in agreement with the known tectonic evolution and the climatic variability of this area. This study confirms the antiquity of the hominin presence in western Africa more than 2000 km away from the closest old hominin fossil sites.

Abstract: International audience; The recent tectonics of the arid northern Chile Andean western forearc is characterized by trench‐parallel normal faults within the Atacama Fault System (AFS). Since the 1995‐Mw8.1 Antofagasta earthquake, the mechanism driving this recent and localized extension is considered to be associated with the seismic cycle within the subduction zone. Analyzing morphotectonic patterns along these faults allows examining the seismic potential associated with the subduction zone. Using field Digital Elevation Models and in situ‐produced cosmogenic 10Be, we determined a 0.2 mm.yr−1 long‐term vertical slip rate along the Mejillones fault, one of the most prominent structures within the AFS. This result suggests that the AFS corresponds to slow slip rate faults despite the rapid subduction context. However, the size of coseismic slips observed along the AFS faults suggests that larger subduction earthquakes (Mw>8.1) may occur episodically in the area.

Abstract: International audience; The growing number of studies based on data provided by the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technique from increasingly diverse matrices implies that developing very effective and reproducible sample processing techniques is crucial to meet the demand generated. After being dissolved, the isolation of the cosmogenic nuclide to be measured and its chemical purification imply complex processes throughout successive stages The presented automatic system was designed to perform the final steps of the Be-10 and Al-26 chemical extraction protocol from natural matrices (sediments, pure mineral phases, ...), previously purified, decontaminated and dissolved in the case of in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclides, or leached or dissolved in the case of meteoric cosmogenic nuclides. Driven by Labview software, the developed automatic system, in addition to freeing the operator from tedious tasks, allows reproducibly processing simultaneously up to eight samples of different volumes in roughly 40 min. This article presents the design of the automated extraction bench and its performance based on the recovery efficiency of the stable element and the reproducibility of the measurements of the cosmogenic nuclide concentrations by AMS.

Abstract: International audience; We estimate recent (20 ka) incision and lateral migration rate on a spectacular ~N-S striking gorge cross-cutting N-dipping limestones in a fold-and-thrust belt of the external Southern French Alps. Upstream of the gorge, the river makes a right angle turn and follows the limestone surface parallel to the bedding direction (~EW). Eighteen samples were gathered along two vertical river polished profiles and three others on the denuded north-dipping surface layer, in order to determine river incision and lateral migration timing and rates. Surface age exposures of polished river cliff and bedding surface have been obtained from 36Cl cosmogenic nuclide dating and allow us to constrain the rate of vertical incision and of surface denudation of the Jurassic limestone layer. Fifteen 36Cl exposure ages have been obtained and range from ~21 ka to ~3 ka. Samples clearly define two age/height linear trends, which slopes correspond to incision rates of 1 and 0.3 mm/yr, respectively. The transition from low to high incision rate occurs at about ~12 ka, i.e. during the Younger Dryas glacial phase. Data also indicate that the vertical incision of the N-S branch of the gorge is coeval with the lateral (northward) river migration of its E-W branch associated with the denudation of the limestones surface. Extrapolating incision rates deduced from 36Cl exposure ages through time suggests that the incision of the Clue and denudation of the Jurassic limestones started about 500–600 ka ago.

Abstract: International audience; Recent synoptic studies have summarized the former spatial extent and chronology of the last Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) and provide exceptional compilations of empirical datasets. The latter represent the primary source of information for the modelling community to test and develop thermomechanical ice sheet model, which are then further embedded into climatic and general circulation models. The Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) extent and chronology of the SIS across continental Europe were highlighted as being the least well-known thus generating the biggest uncertainties in the reconstruction of the ice sheet. While early geomorphological studies of the ice sheet marginal belts are numerous and detailed in western Russia, geochronological data are virtually inexistent. In an attempt to fill in this gap, we conducted a series of sampling campaigns for surface exposure dating using 10Be in the western and northwestern regions of Russia. We present here the first results from the Valday Heights where glacial deposits constitute well-preserved margins of the SIS. A total of 16 samples firmly establish the timing of the LGM in the Valday Heights at 20.1 ± 0.4 ka. The Valday Heights acted as a natural wall for the last maximum advance of the SIS during MIS2, constraining the eastern flank of the Ladoga-Ilmen-Lovat ice stream to the west of the hills. The Valday Heights were only overran by previously more extensive glacial advances as suggested by older exposure ages obtain on erratic boulders (31.2 ± 1.4 to 47.1 ± 1.5 ka) located east of the LGM limit.

Abstract: Although agriculturally accelerated soil erosion is implicated in the unsustainable environmental degradation of mountain environments, such as in the Himalaya, the effects of land use can be challenging to quantify in many mountain settings because of the high and variable natural background rates of erosion. In this study, we present new long-term denudation rates, derived from cosmogenic 10Be analysis of quartz in river sediment from the Likhu Khola, a small agricultural river basin in the Middle Hills of central Nepal. Calculated long-term denudation rates, which reflect background natural erosion processes over 1000+ years prior to agricultural intensification, are similar to present-day sediment yields and to soil loss rates from terraces that are well maintained. Similarity in short- and long-term catchment-wide erosion rates for the Likhu is consistent with data from elsewhere in the Nepal Middle Hills but contrasts with the very large increases in short-term erosion rates seen in agricultural catchments in other steep mountain settings. Our results suggest that the large sediment fluxes exported from the Likhu and other Middle Hills rivers in the Himalaya are derived in large part from natural processes, rather than from soil erosion as a result of agricultural activity. Catchment-scale erosional fluxes may be similar over short and long timescales if both are dominated by mass wasting sources such as gullies, landslides, and debris flows (e.g., as is evident in the landslide-dominated Khudi Khola of the Nepal High Himalaya, based on compiled data). As a consequence, simple comparison of catchment-scale fluxes will not necessarily pinpoint land use effects on soils where these are only a small part of the total erosion budget, unless rates of mass wasting are also considered. Estimates of the mass wasting contribution to erosion in the Likhu imply catchment-averaged soil production rates on the order of ~ 0.25–0.35 mm yr−1, though rates of mass wasting are poorly constrained. The deficit between our best estimates for soil production rates and measurements of soil loss rates supports conclusions from previous studies that terraced agriculture in the Likhu may not be associated with a large systematic soil deficit, at least when terraces are well maintained, but that poorly managed terraces, forest, and scrubland may lead to rapid depletion of soil resources.

Abstract: Deglaciation chronology of the Polish High Tatra Mountains has been reconstructed based on 10Be exposure age dating. Fifty-seven rock samples were collected from boulders located on the terminal and lateral moraines that limit the horizontal extent of the LGM and the Lateglacial glaciers in the Biala Woda and Sucha Woda catchments. The uncertainty-weighted mean age of 21.5 ± 2.5 ka obtained for the maximum terminal moraine in the Sucha Woda Valley indicates that the oldest preserved moraines were formed during the global LGM. The age population ranges between 15.1 ± 1.0 and 28.3 ± 2.0 ka, and suggests that glaciers reached their maximum position (LGM I) as early as 28–25 ka and the final stabilization of the form occurred much later possibly after melting of buried dead ice. The younger glacial oscillation (LGM II) occurred no later than 20.5 ka and is represented by well-preserved termino-lateral moraine systems in the Panszczyca Valley. The first Lateglacial stage (LG1) in the study area is documented in the Rybi Potok Valley at the RP1 moraine (1300 m a.s.l.), which was stable at around 16.6 ± 0.3 ka. The younger LG2 stage has no defined absolute age, however, it is constrained between 16.5 and 15.5 ka by the timing of the LG3 stage. This cold event is represented by well-formed moraines in the Roztoka/Piec Stawow Polskich, Rybi Potok and Panszczyca valleys of which exposure age indicates their deposition between 15.0 ± 0.5 and 15.6 ± 0.1 ka. The LG1, LG2 and LG3 stages likely occurred during the Oldest Dryas cold stage (Greenland Stadial 2.1a) related to the North Atlantic cooling Heinrich Event 1. The youngest glacial oscillation is evidenced by moraines in the Pusta and Panszczyca valleys. These moraines are composed of very large granitic blocks of which exposure ages often exhibit isotope inheritance. This is reflected by the youngest P3 moraine in the Panszczyca Valley with a mean age of deposition close to the LGM. The R4 moraine system in the Pusta Valley, however, indicates two oscillations phases that occurred at around 13 ka and correlates well with the timing of RP5 moraine formation in the Za Mnichem Valley. The LG4 stage is related to the climate cooling during the Younger Dryas (Greenland Stadial 1). LGM ELAs reconstructed for the Biala Woda and Sucha Woda/Panszczyca glaciers were located at 1460–1480 m a.s.l. During the Oldest Dryas stages, the ELA in the High Tatras rose from 1600 to 1650 m a.s.l. in the Rybi Potok Valley and from 1700 to 1800 m a.s.l. in the Roztoka/Piec Stawow Polskich Valley. The Younger Dryas ELA, depending on glacier's exposition, was located between 1950 and 2000 m a.s.l. Climate modelling results show that the LGM glaciers (maximum advance) could have advanced in the High Tatras when the mean annual temperature was lower than today by 11–12 °C and precipitation was reduced by 40–60%. During the Lateglacial stages the temperature decrease in the study area changed from 10 °C during the Oldest Dryas to 6 °C during the Younger Dryas and precipitation lowering decreased from −50% to −30% or even −10%, respectively compare to modern conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Although several authors have pointed out the importance of earth surface process to passive margin escarpments relief evolution and even drainage rearrangements, the dynamics of a consolidated capture area (after a drainage network erodes the escarpment, as the one from the Itajai-Acu River) remain poorly understood. Here, results are presented from radar elevation and aerial imagery data coupled with in-situ-produced 1 Be concentrations measured in sand-sized river-born sediments from the Serra Geral escarpment, southern Brazil. The Studied area's relief evolution is captained by the drainage network: while the Itajai-Acu watershed relief is the most dissected and lowest in elevation, it is significantly less dissected in the intermediate elevation Iguacu catchment, an important Parana River tributary. These less dissected and topographically higher areas belong to the Uruguai River catchment. These differences are conditioned by (i) different lithology compositions, structures and genesis; (ii) different morphological configurations, notably slope, range, relief; and (iii) different regional base levels. Along the Serra Geral escarpment, drainage features such as elbows, underfitted valleys, river profile anomalies, and contrasts in mapped chi-values are evidence of the rearrangement process, mainly beheading, where ocean-facing tributaries of the Itajai-Acu River capture the inland catchments (Iguacu and Uruguai). The Be-10 derived denudation rates reinforced such processes: while samples from the Cacador and Araucarias Plateaus yield weighted means of 3.1 +/- 0.2 and 6.5 +/- 0.4 m/Ma respectively, samples from along the escarpment yield a weighted mean of 46.8 +/- 3.6 m/Ma, almost 8 times higher. Such significant denudation rate differences are explained by base-level control, relief characteristics, and the geology framework. The main regional morphological evolutionary mechanism is headward denudation and piracy by the Itajal-Acu River tributaries, As the escarpment moves from east to west, Itajal-Acu River tributaries develop, leading to regional relief lowering and area losses within the Iguacu and Uruguai catchments. Such processes were accelerated since Itajai-Acu tributaries reached into sedimentary and volcanic rocks. From this moment on, Serra Geral became the main hydrographic divide between the ocean- and inland facing-catchments in the area.

Abstract: International audience; Previous studies on Jumento volcano, based on radiocarbon dating and comparative morphometric analysis, suggest that it could be the youngest volcano of the Sierra Chichinautzin. Here we establish a new chronology of the emplacement of the Late Holocene lava flows of Jumento volcano using in situ-produced 10Be cosmic ray exposure (CRE) dating of quartz xenocrysts to test this hypothesis. Depending on the choice of the cosmogenic nuclide production parameters in the exposure age calculators used, the mean 10Be CRE ages ranges between 1.86 ± 0.68 ka and 2.41 ± 0.97 ka for the inner lava flow and between 1.90 ± 0.29 ka and 2.49 ± 0.41 ka for the breakout lava flow. These preliminary mean 10Be CRE ages confirm that the Jumento volcano is one of the youngest volcanoes of the Sierra Chichinautzin although slightly older than the Xitle volcano. This first 10Be eruption chronology of the Sierra Chichinautzin shows that 10Be CRE dating represents an alternative approach to date volcanic rocks, not only for the Sierra Chichinautzin but also for other volcanic fields, especially when no charcoal or paleosoils are available for radiocarbon dating. Furthermore, it suggests that in situ-produced cosmogenic nuclide dating has considerable potential to throw light on the volcanic history and eruption recurrence of this volcanic field, in order to provide enough data for the mitigation of the hazards and related risks in Mexico City, the city of Cuernavaca and the small towns around the volcanic field.

Abstract: International audience; Documenting sub-Antarctic glacier variations during the local last glacial maximum is of major interest to better understand their sensitivity to atmospheric and oceanic temperature changes in conjunction with Antarctic ice sheet changes. However, data are sparse because evidence of earlier glacier extents is for most sub-Antarctic islands located offshore making their observation complex. Here, we present 22 cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure ages obtained from five sites at Kerguelen to document the glacial history. The 36Cl ages from roche moutonnee surfaces, erratics and boulders collected on moraines span from 41.9 ± 4.4 ka to 14.3 ± 1.1 ka. Ice began to retreat on the eastern part of the main island before 41.4 ± 4.4 ka. Slow deglaciation occurred from ∼41 to ∼29 ka. There is no evidence of advances between 29 ka and the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR) period (∼14.5–12.9 ka) period. During the ACR, however, the Bontemps and possibly Belvedere moraines were formed by the advance of a Cook Ice Cap outlet glacier and a local glacier on the Presque Ile Jeanne d’Arc, respectively. This glacier evolution differs partly from that of glaciers in New Zealand and in Patagonia. These asynchronous glacier changes in the sub-Antarctic region are however in agreement with sea surface temperature changes recorded around Antarctica, which suggest differences in the climate evolution of the Indo-Pacific and Atlantic sectors of Antarctica.

Abstract: International audience; New high-resolution authigenic Be-10/Be-9 ratio (Be-ratio) records covering the last geomagnetic reversal, i.e. the Matuyama-Brushes transition (MBT), have been obtained and set on a time scale using benthic delta O-18 (Cibicides wuellerstorfi) records. The geographic distribution of the four studied sites allows global comparison between the North Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. All Be-ratio records contain a twofold increase triggered by the geomagnetic dipole moment (GDM) collapse associated with the MBT. The stratigraphic position of the Be-ratio spike, relative to marine isotope stages, allows establishment of a robust astrochronological framework for the MBT, anchoring its age between 778 and 766 ka (average mid-peaks at 772 ka), which is consistent with all other available Be-10-proxy records from marine, ice and loess archives. The global Be-10 atmospheric production doubling represents an increase of more than 300 atoms m(-2) s(-1) that is compatible with the increased magnitude of atmospheric Be-10 production obtained by simulations between the present GDM and a null-GDM. The minimum Be-10-derived GDM average computed for the 776-771 ka interval is 1.7 +/- 0.4 x 10(22) Am-2, in agreement with model simulations and absolute paleointensities of transitional lava flows

Abstract: International audience; The rates and chronologies of valley incision are closely modulated by the tectonic uplift of active mountain ranges and were controlled by repeated climate changes during the Quaternary. The continental collision between the Iberian and Eurasian plates induced a double-vergence orogen, the Pyrenees, which has been considered a mature mountain range despite significant seismicity and evidence of neotectonics. Nevertheless, recent studies indicated that the range may have never reached a steady state. One option for resolving this controversy is to quantify the incision rates since the Miocene by reconstructing the vertical movement of geometric markers such as fluvial terraces. However, the few available ages for the Pyrenean terrace systems do not exceed the Middle Pleistocene. Thus, we study alluvium-filled horizontal epiphreatic passages in limestone karstic networks to increase the span of this dataset. Such landforms are used as substitutes of fluvial terraces because they represent former valley floors. These features record the transient position of former local base levels during the process of valley deepening. The Têt river valley (southern Pyrenees) is studied near the Villefranche-de-Conflent limestone gorge, where 8 cave levels have been recognized over a vertical height of 600 m. In this setting, already published 26Al/10Be cosmogenic burial data were limited to the last ∼5 Ma. This work extends this initial dataset through the acquisition of cosmogenic 10Be/21Ne data, which should enable us to reconstruct a more complete valley incision chronology. We also revise the 26Al/10Be record for the lowest portion of the valley. The obtained quantitative results are surprising relative to certain geological evidence, and the limitations of such an approach in the investigated geodynamic context are discussed. In particular, sampling within a detrital deposit (the Escaro Formation) and in the riverbeds suggests that the 26Al/10Be ratios that are associated with the lower cave levels could have been inherited by pre-burial episodes. Similarly, pre-burial catchment denudation rates that do not exceed hundreds of cm/ka are probably tainted by the same amalgamation processes.

Abstract: 10 Be exposure ages from moraines and bedrock sites in the Rohacska Valley provide chronology of the last glaciation in the largest valley of the Western Tatra Mts., the Western Carpathians. The minimum apparent exposure age of 19.4 ± 2.1 ka obtained for the oldest sampled boulder and the mean age of 18.0 ± 0.8 ka calculated for the terminal moraine indicate that the oldest preserved moraine was probably deposited at the time of the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The age of this moraine coincides with the termination of the maximum glacier expansion in other central European ranges, including the adjacent High Tatra Mts. and the Alps. The equilibrium line altitude (ELA) of the LGM glacier in the Rohacska Valley, estimated at 1400–1410 m a.s.l., was 50–80 m lower than in the eastern part of the range, indicating a positive ELA gradient from west to east among the north-facing glaciers in the Tatra Mts. Lateglacial glacier expansion occurred no later than 13.4 ± 0.5 ka and 11.9 ± 0.5 ka, as indicated by the mean exposure ages calculated for re-advance moraines. This timing is consistent with the exposure age chronology of the last Lateglacial re-advance in the High Tatra Mts., Alps and lower mountain ranges in central Europe. The ELA in the Rohacska Valley estimated at 1690–1770 m a.s.l. in this period was located 130–300 m lower than in the north-facing valleys in the High Tatra Mts. 10 Be exposure ages obtained for a rock glacier constrains the timing of this landform stabilization in the Salatinska Valley and provides the first chronological evidence for the Lateglacial activity of rock glaciers in the Carpathians.

Abstract: The Last Glacial Termination led to major changes in ice sheet coverage that disrupted global patterns of atmosphere and ocean circulation. Paleoclimate records from Iberia suggest that westerly episodes played a key role in driving heterogeneous climate in the North Atlantic Region. We used 10Be Cosmic Ray Exposure (CRE) dating to explore the glacier response of small mountain glaciers (ca. 5 km2) that developed on the northern slope of the Cantabrian Mountains (Iberian Peninsula), an area directly under the influence of the Atlantic westerly winds. We analyzed twenty boulders from three moraines and one rock glacier arranged as a recessional sequence preserved between 1150 and 1540 m above sea level (a.s.l.) in the Monasterio valley (Redes Natural Park). Results complement previous chronologic data based on radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence from the Monasterio valley, which suggest a local Glacial Maximum (local GM) prior to 33 ka BP and a long-standing glacier advance at 24 ka coeval to the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Resultant 10Be CRE ages suggest a progressive retreat and thinning of the Monasterio glacier over the time interval 18.1–16.7 ka. This response is coeval with the Heinrich Stadial 1, an extremely cold and dry climate episode initiated by a weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Glacier recession continued through the Bolling/Allerod period as indicate the minimum exposure ages obtained from a cirque moraine and a rock glacier nested within this moraine, which yielded ages of 14.0 and 13.0 ka, respectively. Together, they suggest that the Monasterio glacier experienced a gradual transition from glacier to rock glacier activity as the AMOC started to strengthen again. Glacial evidence ascribable to the Younger Dryas cooling was not dated in the Monasterio valley, but might have occurred at higher elevations than evidence dated in this work. The evolution of former glaciers documented in the Monasterio valley seems consistent with previous 10Be chronologies reported in other mountain ranges of the Iberian Peninsula, which have been recalculated according to a common production rate and scaling scheme. However, the re-evaluation of published 10Be chronologies has highlighted the fact that glacial evidence previously ascribed to the Younger Dryas might be more limited than previously thought and the need for additional studies to characterized the extent of glaciers during the Younger Dryas cooling.

All rights reserved., In this study, fossil debris-covered glaciers are investigated and dated in the Sierra de la Demanda, northern Spain. They are located in glacial valleys of approximately 1 km in length, where several moraines represent distinct phases of the deglaciation period. Several boulders in the moraines and fossil debris-covered glaciers were selected for analysis of Be-10 surface exposure dating. A minimum age of 17.8 +/- 2.2 ka was obtained for the outermost moraine in the San Lorenzo cirque, and was attributed to the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) or earlier glacial stages, based on deglaciation dates determined in other mountain areas of northern Spain. The youngest moraines were dated to approximately 16.7 +/- 1.4 ka, and hence correspond to the GS-2a stadial (Oldest Dryas). Given that the debris-covered glaciers fossilize intermediate moraines, it was deduced that they developed between the LGM and the Oldest Dryas, coinciding with a period of extensive deglaciation. During this deglaciation phase, the cirque headwalls likely discharged large quantities of boulders and blocks that covered the residual ice masses. The resulting debris-covered glaciers evolved slowly because the debris mantle preserved the ice core from rapid ablation, and consequently they remained active until the end of the Late Glacial or the beginning of the Holocene (for the San Lorenzo cirque) and the Holocene Thermal Maximum (for the Mencilla cirque). Abstract: In this study, we document deglaciation in a sector of the southern–central Pyrenees (the Panticosa massif and the upper Gallego and Ossau valleys) using cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) dating methods, which were applied to samples from high altitude polished rock steps and rock glacier boulders. The obtained CRE dates show a coherent spatial distribution and confirm results previously obtained in this study area, thus demonstrating the reliability and robustness of the method. The results of analyses based on two distinct isotopes (10Be and 36Cl) are consistent, although the error is higher for results based on the 36Cl isotope. The study provides evidence for ice extent in the High Gallego Valley during the Oldest Dryas, with glacial advance until the bottom of the valleys, although the main glacier tongues remained disconnected from each other. During this period, the extent of glacier advance was directly related to the elevation of the associated summits. The Younger Dryas glaciers were constrained to cirques or very short ice tongues, and dating of the polished rock steps indicates that the ice masses were present until the first millennium of the Holocene. The Brazato rock glacier developed at the beginning of the Holocene and remained active until the Holocene Thermal Optimum, because of the protective effect of large masses of blocks and boulders.

Abstract: The 60 x 10(6) m(3) Sechilienne landslide (Belledonne Massif, Western Alps) is located on the right bank of the East-West trending Romanche valley which is shaped by glacial and alluvial processes during the Quaternary. Its head scarp (>35 m high) was dated by Le Roux et al. (2009) using the cosmic ray exposure (CRE) method. Even though these previous results revealed that the initiation of the instability occurred several thousand years after ice down-wastage in the valley, the internal landslide evolution is not constrained. In this paper, we provide 63 additional Be-10 samples collected from the internal scarps and the main scarp, as well as on glacially polished rock surfaces. The aim is to constrain the global landslide kinematics (internal and head scarps) and its relationship with glacier retreat. Results from glacially polished surfaces point out that complex shielding processes (relict moraines, soil deposits and seasonal snow cover) might have affected rock dating. Despite scattering of the resulting ages, the dataset shows that the glacial retreat was achieved between 17.5 and 13 ka. Exposure ages obtained on gravitational scarps reveal that the landslide initiation occurred 8 to 6 ka ago. From the initiation until 2 ka the gravitational kinematics was slow (similar to 2 mm" year(-1)) and focused around the head scarp, leading to a general slope subsidence. After 2 ka, the exposure rates increased significantly (similar to 8 min. year(-1)) with the development of pervasive internal deformation of the landslide mass. This new scenario for the 58chilienne slope reflects a progressive rock-slope weakening since 8 ka, associated with a continuous activity of a deep-seated surface failure.

Abstract: International audience; Purpose: Vertical transfer of solid matter in soils (bioturbation and translocation) is responsible for changes in soil properties over time through the redistribution of most of the soil constituents with depth. Such transfers are, however, still poorly quantified.Materials and methods: In this study, we examine matter transfer in four eutric Luvisols through an isotopic approach based on 137Cs, 210Pb(xs), and meteoric 10Be. These isotopes differ with respect to chemical behavior, input histories, and half-lives, which allows us to explore a large time range. Their vertical distributions were modeled by a diffusion-advection equation with depth-dependent parameters. We estimated a set of advection and diffusion coefficients able to simulate all isotope depth distributions and validated the resulting model by comparing the depth distribution of organic carbon (including 12/13C and 14C isotopes) and of the 0–2-μm particles with the data.Results and discussion: We showed that (i) the model satisfactorily reproduces the organic carbon, 13C, and 14C depth distributions, indicating that organic carbon content and age can be explained by transport without invoking depth-dependent decay rates; (ii) translocation partly explains the 0–2-μm particle accumulation in the Bt horizon; and (iii) estimates of diffusion coefficients that quantify the soil mixing rate by bioturbation are significantly higher for the studied plots than those obtained by ecological studies.Conclusions: This study presents a model capable of satisfactorily reproducing the isotopic profiles of several tracers and simulating the distribution of organic carbon and the translocation of 0–2-μm particles.

Abstract: International audience; Similar to many other regions in the world, glaciers in the southern sub-polar regions are currently retreating. In the Kerguelen Islands (49°S, 69°E), the mass balance of the Cook Ice Cap (CIC), the largest ice cap in the region, experimented dramatic shrinking between 1960 and 2013 with retreat rates among the highest in the world. This observation needs to be evaluated in a long-term context. However, data on the past glacier extents are sparse in the sub-Antartic regions. To investigate the deglaciation pattern since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) period, we present the first 13 cosmogenic 36Cl surface exposure ages from four sites in the Kerguelen Islands. The 36Cl ages from erratic and moraine boulders span from 24.4±2.7 ka to 0.3±0.1 ka. We combined these ages with extisting glacio-marine radiocarbon ages and bathymetric data to document the temporal and spatial changes of the island's glacial history. Ice began to retreat on the main island before 24.4±2.7 ka until around the time of the Antartic Cold Reversal (ACR) period (-14.5-12.9 ka), during which the Bontemps moraine was formed by the advance of a CIC outlet glacier. Deglacication continued during the Holocene probably until 3 ka with evidence of miror advances during the last millennium. This chronology is in pace with majeor changes in the ᵟ18O in a recent West Antartica ice core record, showing that Kerguelen Islands glaciers are particularly sensitive and relevant to document climate change in the southern polar regions.
