Entanglement and its propagation are central to understanding a multitude of physical properties of quantum systems. Notably, within closed quantum many-body systems, entanglement is believed to yield emergent thermodynamic behavior, yet a universal understanding remains challenging due to the non-integrability and computational intractability of most large-scale quantum systems. Quantum hardware platforms provide a means to study the formation and scaling of entanglement in interacting many-body systems. Here, we use a controllable $4 \times 4$ array of superconducting qubits to emulate a two-dimensional hard-core Bose-Hubbard lattice. We generate superposition states by simultaneously driving all lattice sites and extract correlation lengths and entanglement entropy across its many-body energy spectrum. We observe volume-law entanglement scaling for states at the center of the spectrum and a crossover to the onset of area-law scaling near its edges.

We propose and demonstrate an architecture for fluxonium-fluxonium two-qubit gates mediated by transmon couplers (FTF, for fluxonium-transmon-fluxonium). Relative to architectures that exclusively rely on a direct coupling between fluxonium qubits, FTF enables stronger couplings for gates using non-computational states while simultaneously suppressing the static controlled-phase entangling rate ($ZZ$) down to kHz levels, all without requiring strict parameter matching. Here we implement FTF with a flux-tunable transmon coupler and demonstrate a microwave-activated controlled-Z (CZ) gate whose operation frequency can be tuned over a 2 GHz range, adding frequency allocation freedom for FTF's in larger systems. Across this range, state-of-the-art CZ gate fidelities were observed over many bias points and reproduced across the two devices characterized in this work. After optimizing both the operation frequency and the gate duration, we achieved peak CZ fidelities in the 99.85-99.9\% range. Finally, we implemented model-free reinforcement learning of the pulse parameters to boost the mean gate fidelity up to $99.922\pm0.009\%$, averaged over roughly an hour between scheduled training runs. Beyond the microwave-activated CZ gate we present here, FTF can be applied to a variety of other fluxonium gate schemes to improve gate fidelities and passively reduce unwanted $ZZ$ interactions., 23 pages, 16 figures

Metasurface phase masks offer a new way of imaging in that the lens sizes are orders of magnitude smaller and allow for batch fabrication of a large number of miniature lenses. Unfortunately, current metasurface lens technology cannot simultaneously overcome the issues of image distortion for objects far from the optical axis and chromatic aberrations. Using simulations in Matlab, we study and design a single lens holographic system using metasurface lenses to drastically reduce both off-axis distortions and chromatic aberrations. Using a single metasurface lens, we demonstrate that a high quality image can be obtained for an object with a 30° angular diameter and 123 fractional bandwidth. We also experimentally demonstrate reduction of aberrations and 3D imaging for spare images as well as show mediocre quality reconstructed dense images.
