Abstract Lung tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells induced by influenza vaccination are crucial for heterosubtypic immunity upon re-exposure to the influenza virus, enabling rapid and robust responses upon reactivation. To enhance the efficacy of influenza vaccines, we induce the generation of lung TRM cells following intranasal vaccination with a commercial influenza vaccine adjuvanted with NexaVant (NVT), a TLR3 agonist-based adjuvant. We demonstrate that intranasal immunization with the NVT-adjuvanted vaccine provides improved protection against influenza virus infections by inducing the generation of CD4+ TRM cells in the lungs in a type I interferon-dependent manner. These pulmonary CD4+ TRM cells provide potent mucosal immunity and cross-protection against heterosubtypic infections in both mouse and ferret models. This vaccine platform has the potential to significantly improve conventional intramuscular influenza vaccines by providing broader protection.

Abstract Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are vital contributors to the growth, metastasis, and therapeutic resistance of various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the exact phenotype of TAMs and the mechanisms underlying their modulation for therapeutic purposes have not been determined. Here, we present compelling evidence that glutamine-derived aspartate in TAMs stimulates spermidine production through the polyamine synthesis pathway, thereby increasing the translation efficiency of HIF-1α via eIF5A hypusination. Consequently, augmented translation of HIF-1α drives TAMs to undergo an increase glycolysis and acquire a metabolic phenotype distinct from that of M2 macrophages. Finally, eIF5A levels in tumor stromal lesions were greater than those in nontumor stromal lesions. Additionally, a higher degree of tumor stromal eIF5A hypusination was significantly associated with a more advanced tumor stage. Taken together, these data highlight the potential of inhibiting hypusinated eIF5A by targeting glutamine metabolism in TAMs, thereby opening a promising avenue for the development of novel therapeutic approaches for HCC.

Abstract Electroanalytical and optical techniques are widely used in the development of nanomaterials-based sensor platforms. These techniques have a quick response, high sensitivity, and selectivity. Electroanalytical and optical techniques are widely used in the development of nanomaterial-based sensor platforms. These sensors must be able to detect biomarkers, pathogens, toxins, and pharmaceuticals in biological matrices associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases. Considering these pathophysiologies, numerous investigations have been undertaken to develop sensors for early diagnosis and treatment, utilizing nanomaterials such as quantum dots. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), which are ideally nanometer-sized graphene fragments, have recently received increased attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties such as fast electron mobility, photostability, water solubility, biocompatibility, high specific surface area, and nontoxicity. Apart from the properties mentioned above, GQDs provide π–π interactions, electrostatic, and covalent interactions with an analyte, and ease of synthesis as well as the ability to combine with other nanomaterials, which have enabled their use in various sensing platforms. This review summarizes recent advances in GQDs-based nanocomposites for sensor applications, with a focus on electroanalytical and optical techniques, as well as current challenges and future prospects.

Abstract Mites of the genus Tyrophagus (Acari: Acaridae) are among the most widely distributed mites. The species in this genus cause damage to stored products and crops, and pose a threat to human health. However, the influence of Tyrophagus spp. in apiculture remains unknown. In 2022, a study focusing on the identification of Tyrophagus species within five apiaries was conducted in Chungcheongnam Province, Republic of Korea. Its specific objective was to investigate the presence of Tyrophagus mites in response to the reported high mortality of honey bee colonies in this area. Morphological identification and phylogenetic analysis using the mitochondrial gene cytochrome-c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) confirmed for the first time the presence of the mite species Tyrophagus curvipenis in a honey bee colony in the Republic of Korea. Two honey bee pathogens were detected in the mite, a viral pathogen (deformed wing virus, DWV) and a protozoal pathogen (Trypanosoma spp.). The presence of the two honey bee pathogens in the mite suggests that this mite could contribute to the spread of related honey bee diseases. However, the direct influence of the mite T. curvipenis on honey bee health remains unknown and should be further investigated.

Abstract Background The repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor (REST), a master transcriptional repressor, is essential for maintenance, self-renewal, and differentiation in neuroblastoma. An elevated expression of REST is associated with impaired neuronal differentiation, which results in aggressive neuroblastoma formation. E3 ligases are known to regulate REST protein abundance through the 26 S proteasomal degradation pathway in neuroblastoma. However, deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs), which counteract the function of E3 ligase-mediated REST protein degradation and their impact on neuroblastoma tumorigenesis have remained unexplored. Methods We employed a CRISPR/Cas9 system to perform a genome-wide knockout of ubiquitin-specific proteases (USPs) and used western blot analysis to screen for DUBs that regulate REST protein abundance. The interaction between USP3 and REST was confirmed by immunoprecipitation and Duolink in situ proximity assays. The deubiquitinating effect of USP3 on REST protein degradation, half-life, and neuronal differentiation was validated by immunoprecipitation, in vitro deubiquitination, protein-turnover, and immunostaining assays. The correlation between USP3 and REST expression was assessed using patient neuroblastoma datasets. The USP3 gene knockout in neuroblastoma cells was performed using CRISPR/Cas9, and the clinical relevance of USP3 regulating REST-mediated neuroblastoma tumorigenesis was confirmed by in vitro and in vivo oncogenic experiments. Results We identified a deubiquitinase USP3 that interacts with, stabilizes, and increases the half-life of REST protein by counteracting its ubiquitination in neuroblastoma. An in silico analysis showed a correlation between USP3 and REST in multiple neuroblastoma cell lines and identified USP3 as a prognostic marker for overall survival in neuroblastoma patients. Silencing of USP3 led to a decreased self-renewal capacity and promoted retinoic acid-induced differentiation in neuroblastoma. A loss of USP3 led to attenuation of REST-mediated neuroblastoma tumorigenesis in a mouse xenograft model. Conclusion The findings of this study indicate that USP3 is a critical factor that blocks neuronal differentiation, which can lead to neuroblastoma. We envision that targeting USP3 in neuroblastoma tumors might provide an effective therapeutic differentiation strategy for improved survival rates of neuroblastoma patients.

Lake Sinai Virus (LSV) is an emerging pathogen known to affect the honeybee (Apis mellifera). However, its prevalence and genomic characteristics in the Republic of Korea (ROK) remain unexplored. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of and analyze the LSVs by examining 266 honeybee samples from the ROK. Our findings revealed that LSV exhibited the highest infection rate among the pathogens observed in Korean apiaries, particularly during the reported period of severe winter loss (SWL) in A. mellifera apiaries in 2022. Three LSV genotypes- 2, 3, and 4 -were identified using RNA-dependent RNA polymerase gene analysis. Importantly, the infection rates of LSV2 (65.2%) and LSV3 (73.3%) were significantly higher in colonies experiencing SWL than in those experiencing normal winter loss (NWL) (p < 0.03). Furthermore, this study provides the first near-complete genome sequences of the Korean LSV2, LSV3, and LSV4 strains, comprising 5,759, 6,040, and 5,985 nt, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on these near-complete genome sequences demonstrated a close relationship between LSVs in the ROK and China. The high LSV infection rate in colonies experiencing a heightened mortality rate during winter suggests that this pathogen might contribute to SWL in ROK. Moreover, the genomic characteristic information on LSVs in this study holds immense potential for epidemiological information and the selection of specific genes suitable for preventing and treating LSV, including the promising utilization of RNA interference medicine in the future.

Abstract Interior hotspots in surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) platforms have attracted intensive attention because they enable facile methodologies and exhibit excellent sensing behavior. Molecules surrounded by plasmonic materials exhibit dual functions as field‐confined regions and analytes, and their domain consistency eventually triggers the amplification of SERS signals. In this study, to conveniently realize interior hotspots, hollow regions such as voids and interstitials are strategically introduced via a galvanic reaction (GR) as a result of the difference in reduction potential between Au and Ag. The imbalanced stoichiometric ratio and diffusion fluxes induce the Kirkendall effect in conjunction with the GR between Au and Ag. SERS platforms with narrow and densified interior hotspots are optimized by controlling the reaction time. The activation of interior hotspots is confirmed using the finite‐difference time‐domain method, which indicates a theoretical enhancement factor of 1.07 × 107 based on a fourth‐power approximation. Abstract Eyebrows are the most important facial feature in facial recognition with its shape rated to be more helpful than color or density for facial reconstruction or approximation. However, little extant research has estimated the position and morphological territory of the eyebrow from the orbit. Three-dimensional craniofacial models, produced from CT scans of 180 Koreans autopsied at the National Forensic Service Seoul Institute, were used to conduct metric analyses of subjects (125 males and 55 females) between 19 and 49 (mean 35.1) years. We employed 18 craniofacial landmarks to examine the morphometry of the eyebrow and orbit with 35 pairs of distances per subject measured between landmark and reference planes. Additionally, we used linear regression analyses to predict eyebrow shape from the orbit for every possible combination of variables. The morphology of the orbit has more influence on the position of the superior margin of the eyebrow. In addition, the middle part of the eyebrow was more predictable. The highest point of the eyebrow in female was located more medially than the male. Based on our findings, the equations for estimating the position of the eyebrow from the shape of the orbit is useful information for face reconstruction or approximation.

Abstract Background N-methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are considered to be involved in several physiological and pathophysiological processes in addition to the progression of neurological disorders. However, how NMDARs are involved in the glycolytic phenotype of M1 macrophage polarization and the possibility of using them as a bio-imaging probe for macrophage-mediated inflammation remain unclear. Methods We analyzed cellular responses to NMDAR antagonism and small interfering RNAs using mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). An NMDAR targeting imaging probe, N-TIP, was produced via the introduction of NMDAR antibody and the infrared fluorescent dye FSD Fluor™ 647. N-TIP binding efficiency was tested in intact and LPS-stimulated BMDMs. N-TIP was intravenously administered to mice with carrageenan (CG)- and LPS-induced paw edema, and in vivo fluorescence imaging was conducted. The anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone were evaluated using the N-TIP-mediated macrophage imaging technique. Results NMDARs were overexpressed in LPS-treated macrophages, subsequently inducing M1 macrophage polarization. Mechanistically, NMDAR-mediated Ca2+ accumulation resulted in LPS-stimulated glycolysis via upregulation of PI3K/AKT/mTORC1 signaling. In vivo fluorescence imaging with N-TIP showed LPS- and CG-induced inflamed lesions at 5 h post-inflammation, and the inflamed lesions could be detected until 24 h. Furthermore, our N-TIP-mediated macrophage imaging technique helped successfully visualize the anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone in mice with inflammation. Conclusion This study demonstrates that NMDAR-mediated glycolysis plays a critical role in M1 macrophage-related inflammation. Moreover, our results suggest that NMDAR targeting imaging probe may be useful in research on inflammatory response in vivo.

Bioelectrohydrogenesis using a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) is a promising technology for simultaneous hydrogen production and wastewater treatment which uses electrogenic microbes. Microbial activity at the anode and hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode can be controlled by electrode–microbe interaction and electron transfer. The selection of anode electrode material is governed by electrochemical oxidation of substrates and subsequent electron transfer to the anode. Similarly, a good cathodic material should reduce the overpotential at the cathode and enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction and H2recovery. This review mainly focused on modifications in electrode materials and cheaper novel alternatives to improve the performance for MEC and overcome its scale-up challenges for practical applications. Performance of various anode and cathode materials based on Ni alloys, stainless steel, polyaniline, palladium, and carbon has been discussed. The scalability of the material should consider its inexpensive fabrication procedure and efficiency.

Conventional surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) at high speed has large iron loss in the stator and eddy current loss in the rotor. The higher the eddy current loss, the higher the rotor temperature. Therefore, a plan to reduce the loss must be devised. Also, weight at high speed is related to mechanical stiffness and electromagnetic vibration noise. Therefore, a plan to reduce the weight must be devised. In this paper, we propose to change the shape of the conventional 15 kW 110 000 rpm class into a slotless shape. A process of protocol change was proposed, and the sizing design of the rotor and stator was devised. The advantages of the proposed shape were verified through performance comparison through finite element analysis (FEA) and mechanical stiffness analysis.

Synthetic double-stranded RNA analogs recognized by Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) are an attractive adjuvant candidate for vaccines, especially against intracellular pathogens or tumors, because of their ability to enhance T cell and antibody responses. Although poly(I:C) is a representative dsRNA with potent adjuvanticity, its clinical application has been limited due to heterogeneous molecular size, inconsistent activity, poor stability, and toxicity. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel dsRNA-based TLR3 agonist named NexaVant (NVT) by using PCR-coupled bidirectional in vitro transcription. Agarose gel electrophoresis and reverse phase-HPLC analysis demonstrated that NVT is a single 275-kDa homogeneous molecule. NVT appears to be stable since its appearance, concentration, and molecular size were unaffected under 6 months of accelerated storage conditions. Moreover, preclinical evaluation of toxicity under good laboratory practices showed that NVT is a safe substance without any signs of serious toxicity. NVT stimulated TLR3 and increased the expression of viral nucleic acid sensors TLR3, MDA-5, and RIG-1. When intramuscularly injected into C57BL/6 mice, ovalbumin (OVA) plus NVT highly increased the migration of dendritic cells (DCs), macrophages, and neutrophils into inguinal lymph node (iLN) compared with OVA alone. In addition, NVT substantially induced the phenotypic markers of DC maturation and activation including MHC-II, CD40, CD80, and CD86 together with IFN-β production. Furthermore, NVT exhibited an appropriate adjuvanticity because it elevated OVA-specific IgG, in particular, higher levels of IgG2c (Th1-type) but lower IgG1 (Th2-type). Concomitantly, NVT increased the levels of Th1-type T cells such as IFN-γ+CD4+ and IFN-γ+CD8+ cells in response to OVA stimulation. Collectively, we suggest that NVT with appropriate safety and effectiveness is a novel and promising adjuvant for vaccines, especially those requiring T cell mediated immunity such as viral and cancer vaccines.

Generators are a key technological element of wind power generation systems. The use of synchronous generators that employ heavy rare-earth permanent magnets is increasing owing to the demand for higher efficiencies. However, these magnets are expensive and undergo an unbalanced supply and demand. Therefore, spoke-type structures have been developed and used in various fields to compensate for the deficient performance when using a ferrite magnet, which is inexpensive and provides a stable supply and demand. However, permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) with adopted spoke-type structures and an output power of 1 kW or higher have not been studied and practically applied sufficiently. Additionally, new designs must consider differences between the target specifications of a generator and wind turbine. In this study, we designed and analyzed the characteristics of an alternative bridge spoke-type PMSG modeling a generator for a 3-kW class wind turbine. We analyzed the performance of the existing spoke-type generator and proposed an alternative bridge spoke shape with an improved performance by removing the leakage flux of the bridge. The performance of the existing spoke model was compared using the finite element method (FEM), and the performance of the proposed model was verified more accurately by performing a three-dimensional (3D) analysis considering the 3D effect. Additionally, we analyzed the voltage fluctuation rate according to the number of stator slots and overhang structure and designed a final model. Considering the characteristics of the ferrite magnet used in the spoke-type design, the irreversible demagnetization characteristics of the conventional and final models were compared using simulations, followed by a comparison between the stiffness characteristics of the two models. Finally, a prototype was manufactured, and the feasibility of the final design was verified using the performance tests.

Permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) with high output density per unit volume are becoming widespread in wind-power generation systems. Among them, spoke-type PMSGs are more challenging to magnetize than other PMSGs, owing to their structural characteristics. Magnetization performance is critical because it is directly related to the demagnetization and mass productivity of permanent magnets, and load performance is reduced when non-magnetization occurs due to the low magnetization performance. Additionally, the starting performance is crucial in wind turbines and is influenced by the cogging torque of the PMSG. This is because starting a wind turbine with a large cogging torque is more challenging. Therefore, this study proposes a spoke-type PMSG rotor shape design for low capacity wind turbines that considers magnetization and cogging torques. We analyzed the principle of magnetization and the factors influencing magnetization performance, and designed a rotor shape with improved magnetization performance. Additionally, we applied an asymmetric rotor barrier structure to reduce the cogging torque and analyze the performance of the final model using finite element analysis. We analyzed the temperature saturation during the operation of the final model using a thermal network method and validated the irreversible demagnetization accordingly.

Developing a small‐volume bioassay using microliter‐scale biofluids is crucial for achieving a rapid, sensitive, and high‐throughput screening and medical diagnosis. Herein, a new plasmonic microwell array (PMA) containing 3D hierarchical nanomaterials for multiplexed bioassays is presented. The microwell array is formed by performing a sequential bottom‐up fabrication involving dispensing UV‐curable photopolymers and plasmonic Ag nanowires (NWs) on a flat substrate. The plasmonic Ag NWs are developed into a multilayer stack of Ag@Au core‐shell NWs having surfaces densely decorated with Au nanoparticles. This multi‐stacked hybrid plasmonic nanostructure provided 3D multiscale hotspots and large effective surfaces for molecular binding sites. Highly improved sensitivities are demonstrated for a plasmon‐enhanced fluorescence‐based immunoassay of cardiac troponin I (cTnI), a diagnostic biomarker for acute myocardial infarction, using a small volume of 5 μL. The limit of detection is determined to be 2.02 pg mL−1 for cTnI, representing a 30‐fold greater sensitivity than the clinical cut‐off value. Furthermore, 3D PMA chips exhibit a highly uniform fluorescence intensity with a coefficient of variation of 3.4%. The 3D PMA provides a sensitive and reliable detection in a high‐throughput manner for point‐of‐care bioanalysis.

Abstract The Planococcus sp. PAMC21323 is a yellow pigment-producing bacterium isolated from King George Island in Antarctica; it has a broad growth temperature range of 5–40 °C. Herein, we describe the complete genome sequence information of the genus Planococcus with its annotated sequence, genetic features for bioremediation, and oxidative stress capacity. The Planococcus sp. PAMC21323 possesses chromosomal DNA (3,196,500-bp) with plasmid DNA (3364-bp). The complete 3,199,864-bp of the genome consists of 3171 genes including 60 transfer RNAs and 24 ribosomal RNAs. Strain PAMC21323 encodes various genes associated with detoxification of heavy metal ions and aromatic hydrocarbons. Moreover, it is equipped with diverse stress response systems, which can be used to sense the internal and oxidative stresses caused by detoxification. This is the first report highlighting the genetic potential of Planococcus sp. PAMC21323 in bioremediation, suggesting application of this psychrotrophic strain in bioremediation in harsh environments.

Abstract Increasing interests in stretchable electronic devices have resulted in vigorous research activities, most of which are focused on structural configurations. Diverse structural configurations are available for stretchability, including stiff-island, serpentine, and buckled structures. With easily deformable shapes and simple fabrication processes, buckled structures have the potential to realize stretchability. However, conventional buckled structures exhibit stretchability only in a single-axis direction. In the present study, a new type of cross-buckled structure, which can overcome the limitations of conventional buckled structures is developed. The stretchable thin film solar cells with the cross-buckled structure showed stable mechanical and electrical characteristics under both stretching and compressing conditions. The cross-buckled structure for stretchable electronic devices is expected to broaden the fields of wearable electronics, stretchable displays, and biocompatible applications.

In an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, an adhesive such as bond is generally injected into the magnet tolerance to prevent vibration of the permanent magnet within the insertion space. In this case, a disadvantage is that the magnet tolerance does not contribute to the performance. In this paper, ferrofluid is inserted to improve the torque density, utilizing the magnet tolerance. When inserting ferrofluid into the magnet tolerance, it is important to fix the magnet because conventional adhesives are not used, and it is important that the ferrofluid does not act as a leakage path within the insertion space. In this study, a new rotor configuration using a plastic barrier that satisfies these considerations was introduced. The analysis was conducted through finite element analysis (FEA), and this technique was verified by comparing the simulation results and the experimental results through a dynamo test. It was confirmed that the no-load back electromotive force in the final model increased through ferrofluid injection.

The wastewater–seawater (WW-SW) integrated reverse osmosis (RO) process has gained much attention in and out of academia due to its energy saving capability, economic benefits, and sustainability. The other advantage of this process is to reduce boron concentration in the RO permeate that can exclude the post-treatment process. However, there are multiple design constraints regarding boron removal that restrict process design in the WW-SW integrated system. In this study, uncertainties in design factors of the WW-SW integrated system in consideration of boron removal have been explored. In comprehensive consideration of the blending ratio of between WW and SW, regulatory water quality standard, specific energy consumption (SEC), specific water cost, and RO recovery rate, a range of 15,000~20,000 mg/L feed turned out to be the most appropriate. Furthermore, boron rejection tests with SWRO (seawater reverse osmosis) and BWRO (brackish water reverse osmosis) membranes under actual WW-SW integration found a critical reduction in boron rejection at less than 20 bar of operating pressure. These findings emphasize the importance of caution in the use of BWRO membranes in the WW-SW integrated RO system.

BackgroundMost type 2 diabetes mellitus patients are obese and have obesity related vascular complications. Exenatide treatment is well known for both decreasing glycated hemoglobin levels and reduction in body weight. So, this study aimed to determine the effects of exenatide on body composition, glycated hemoglobin levels, and vascular stiffness in obese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.MethodsFor 1 month, 32 obese type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were administered 5 µg of exenatide twice daily. The dosage was then increased to 10 µg. Patients' height, body weight, glycated hemoglobin levels, lipid profile, pulse wave velocity (PWV), body mass index, fat mass, and muscle mass were measured by using Inbody at baseline and after 3 months of treatment.ResultsAfter 3 months of treatment, glycated hemoglobin levels decreased significantly (P=0.007). Triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein levels decreased, while aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels were no change. Body weight, and fat mass decreased significantly (P=0.002 and P=0.001, respectively), while interestingly, muscle mass did not decrease (P=0.289). In addition to, Waist-to-hip ratio and aortic PWV decreased significantly (P=0.006 and P=0.001, respectively).ConclusionEffects of short term exenatide use in obese type 2 diabetes mellitus with cardiometabolic high risk patients not only reduced body weight without muscle mass loss, body fat mass, and glycated hemoglobin levels but also improved aortic PWV in accordance with waist to hip ratio.

We report on a quasi-three-dimensional (3D) plasmonic nanowell array with high structural uniformity for molecular detection. The quasi-3D plasmonic nanowell array was composed of periodic hexagonal Au nanowells whose surface is densely covered with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs), separated by an ultrathin dielectric interlayer. The uniform array of the Au nanowells was fabricated by nanoimprint lithography and deposition of Au thin film. A self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT) was coated on the Au surface, on which Au was further deposited. Interestingly, the PFDT-coated Au nanowells were fully covered with Au NPs with an ultra-high density of 375 μm−2 rather than a smooth film due to the anti-wetting property of the low-energy surface. The plasmonic nanogaps formed among the high-density Au NPs led to a strong near-field enhancement via coupled localized surface plasmon resonance and produced a uniform surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) response with a small relative standard deviation of 5.3%. Importantly, the highly uniform nanostructure, featured by the nanoimprint lithography and 3D growth of densely-packed Au NPs, minimizes the spatial variation of Raman intensity, potentially providing quantitative analysis. Moreover, analyte molecules were highly concentrated and selectively deposited in nanowells when a water droplet containing the analyte was evaporated on the plasmonic substrate. The analyte formed a relatively thick overcoat in the nanowells near the triple line due to the coffee-ring effects. Combining 3D plasmonic nanowell substrates with molecular enrichments, highly sensitive detection of lactic acid was demonstrated. Given its combination of high sensitivity and signal uniformity, the quasi-3D plasmonic nanowell substrate is expected to provide a superior molecular detection platform for biosensing applications.

We have investigated the effects of metal decoration on the gas-sensing properties of a device with two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flake channels and graphene electrodes. The 2D hybrid-structure device sensitively detected NO2 gas molecules (>1.2 ppm) as well as NH3 (>10 ppm). Metal nanoparticles (NPs) could tune the electronic properties of the 2D graphene/MoS2 device, increasing sensitivity to a specific gas molecule. For instance, palladium NPs accumulate hole carriers of graphene/MoS2, electronically sensitizing NH3 gas molecules. Contrarily, aluminum NPs deplete hole carriers, enhancing NO2 sensitivity. The synergistic combination of metal NPs and 2D hybrid layers could be also applied to a flexible gas sensor. There was no serious degradation in the sensing performance of metal-decorated MoS2 flexible devices before/after 5000 bending cycles. Thus, highly sensitive and endurable gas sensor could be achieved through the metal-decorated 2D hybrid-structure, offering a useful route to wearable electronic sensing platforms.

This paper reports a highly sensitive and selective surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform. We used a simple fabrication method to generate plasmonic hotspots through a direct maskless plasma etching of a polymer surface and the surface tension-driven assembly of high aspect ratio Ag/polymer nanopillars. These collapsed plasmonic nanopillars produced an enhanced near-field interaction via coupled localized surface plasmon resonance. The high density of the small nanogaps yielded a high plasmonic detection performance, with an average SERS enhancement factor of 1.5 × 107. More importantly, we demonstrated that the encapsulation of plasmonic nanostructures within nanofiltration membranes allowed the selective filtration of small molecules based on the degree of membrane swelling in organic solvents and molecular size. Nanofiltration membrane-encapsulated SERS substrates do not require pretreatments. Therefore, they provide a simple and fast detection of toxic molecules using portable Raman spectroscopy.

The compact integration of semiconductor TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) into the 3D crossed region of stacked plasmonic Ag nanowires (NWs) enhanced the photocatalytic activities through synergistic effects between the strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) excitation at the 3D cross-points of the Ag NWs and the efficient hot electron transfer at the interface between the Ag NWs and the TiO2 NPs. This paper explored new hybrid nanostructures based on the selective assembly of TiO2 NPs onto 3D cross-points of vertically stacked Ag NWs. The assembled TiO2 NPs directly contacted the 3D Ag NWs; therefore, charge separation occurred efficiently at the interface between the Ag NWs and the TiO2 NPs. The composite nanomaterials exhibited high extinction across the ultraviolet-visible range, rendering the nanomaterials high-performance photocatalysts across the full (ultraviolet-visible) and the visible spectral regions. Theoretical simulations clearly revealed that the local plasmonic field was highly enhanced at the 3D crossed regions of the vertically stacked Ag NWs. A Raman spectroscopic analysis of probe dye molecules under photodegradation conditions clearly revealed that the nanogap in the 3D crossed region was crucial for facilitating plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis and plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and levels of deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins B1 and B2 (FBs), and zearalenone (ZEN) contaminants in animal feeds used in Korea in 2012. Contamination with DON was observed in 91.33% and 53.33% in compound feeds and feed ingredients, respectively. Among compound feeds, poultry layer feed (laying) exhibited the highest contaminant level of 1.492 mg/kg. FBs contaminants were present in compound feeds and feed ingredients at 93.33% and 83.33%, respectively. Most poultry broiler (early) feeds were highly contaminated with FBs, and one of these feeds detected the level as 12.823 mg/kg as the highest level. The levels of ZEN in compound feeds and feed ingredients were 71.33% and 47%, respectively. Ninety-eight percent of compound feeds for cattle were contaminated with ZEN, and the highest contamination level of 0.405 mg/kg was observed in cattle fatting feeds.

This study investigated the distribution of twelve mycotoxins (aflatoxins B1, B2, G1, and G2; ochratoxin A; fumonisins B1 and B2; deoxynivalenol; nivalenol; zearalenone; T-2 toxin; and HT-2 toxin) in corn and corn by-products (corn bran, cornstarch, corn gluten, corn gluten feed, corn germ, light steep water, and corn steep liquor) produced by wet-milling in Korea. Fifty-two samples were collected from three factories producing cornstarch and other corn by-products. The samples were pretreated on an immunoaffinity column (IAC), and then the levels of the 12 mycotoxins were analyzed simultaneously by liquid chromatography-coupled triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Fusarium mycotoxins were mainly found in raw corn and corn gluten feed samples. Other mycotoxins—such as aflatoxins, ochratoxin A, and HT-2 toxin—were detected in tiny amounts below the limit of quantification (LOQ) in cornstarch, corn germ, and corn bran. Ochratoxin A and nivalenol were mainly carried over into cornstarch. Aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin, HT-2 toxin, and the fumonisins were concentrated in corn gluten feed. Zearalenone was evenly distributed in all corn by-products except cornstarch during the milling process.

An improved analytical method compared with conventional ones was developed for simultaneous determination of 13 mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, 3-acetylnivalenol, aflatoxin B1, aflatoxin B2, aflatoxin G1, aflatoxin G2, fumonisin B1, fumonisin B2, T-2, HT-2, zearalenone, and ochratoxin A) in cereal grains by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) after a single immunoaffinity column clean-up. The method showed a good linearity, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy in mycotoxin determination by LC/MS/MS. The levels of 13 mycotoxins in 5 types of commercial grains (brown rice, maize, millet, sorghum, and mixed cereal) from South Korea were determined in a total of 507 cereal grains. Mycotoxins produced from Fusarium sp. (fumonisins, deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, and zearalenone) were more frequently (more than 5%) and concurrently detected in all cereal grains along with higher mean levels (4.3–161.0 ng/g) in positive samples than other toxins such as aflatoxins and ochratoxin A (less than 9% and below 5.2 ng/g in positive samples) from other fungal species.

The crystalline volume of nanocrystalline silicon (Si) films could be successfully controlled simply by changing the substrate scan speed at the high working pressure of 300 Torr. The Si crystalline volume fraction was increased from 30% to 57% by increasing the scan speed from 8 to 30 mm/s. When the Si film was prepared at a low scan speed (8 mm/s), Si crystals of size 5 nm grew homogeneously through the whole film. The higher scan speed was found to accelerate crystallization, and crystals of size up to 25 nm were deposited in the Si film deposited when the scan speed was 30 mm/s.

This article presents a compact, planar, and circularly polarized array antenna operating in the W-band (84.5–110 GHz), with all its prototypes fabricated using a low-cost, traditional, microwave printed circuit board composed of Rogers RT/duroid 5880 (εr = 2.2, tanδ = 0.009). The final design that was fabricated and measured was a 4 × 4 array antenna having an overall size of 9 mm × 20 mm × 0.254 mm that used series feeding to reduce its sidelobes. Measurements of the 4 × 4 patch antenna array showed approximately 6.9% 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth along with 15.2 dBi maximum right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) antenna gain at 100 GHz. The array antenna yielded RHCP radiation characterized by a low profile, low cross-polarization levels (<−25 dB), low sidelobe levels (≤−10 dB), and high radiation efficiency (>91%). Additionally, a two-port MIMO antenna system was investigated by considering side-by-side and front-tofront configurations, both of which achieved good isolation and considerable envelope correlation coefficient and diversity gain values. Therefore, the proposed series array and MIMO antennas can be reasonable candidates for 6G applications of the sub-THz band (100– 110 GHz) in ultra-high-speed wireless and satellite communication systems. Spontaneous antitumor T cell responses in cancer patients are strongly controlled by Tregs, and increased numbers of tumor-infiltrating Tregs correlate with reduced survival. However, the tumor antigens recognized by Tregs in cancer patients and the impact of these cells on tumor-specific T cell responses have not been systematically characterized. Here we used a broad panel of long synthetic peptides of defined tumor antigens and normal tissue antigens to exploit a newly developed method to identify and compare ex vivo the antigen specificities of Tregs with those of effector/memory T cells in peripheral blood of colorectal cancer patients and healthy subjects. Tregs in tumor patients were highly specific for a distinct set of only a few tumor antigens, suggesting that Tregs exert T cell suppression in an antigen-selective manner. Tumor-specific effector T cells were detectable in the majority of colorectal cancer patients but not in healthy individuals. We detected differences in the repertoires of antigens recognized by Tregs and effector/memory T cells in the majority of colorectal cancer patients. In addition, only effector/memory T cell responses against antigens recognized by Tregs strongly increased after Treg depletion.
