Abstract

Obraz odgrywa zasadniczą rolę w podejmowanej przez (post)humanistykę krytyce antropocenu. Obrazy towarzyszą refleksji nad antropocenem, spełniając funkcję dowodu rzeczowego lub demonstracji stanu rzeczy. W tekście autorka odwraca porządek i zadaje pytanie o to, jak obrazy sztuki funkcjonują w literackiej fikcji oraz o ile są one obrazami natury. Traktując obraz nie tylko jako reprezentację ikoniczną, ale także ślad świadectwo/dokument, pyta, co robią obrazy w literaturze na przykładzie Mapy i terytorium Michela Houellebecqa (2010). Perspektywa ekokrytyczna ujawni funkcję i znaczenia rozsianych w tekście opisów dzieł sztuki, które mają sprawczość zarówno fabularną, jak i teoretyczną. Wychodząc z psychoanalitycznej interpretacji obrazu, autorka zadaje pytanie, czym jest dla Houellebecqa Realne i ile może mieć wspólnego z zamierającą naturą. Ostatnie prace bohatera powieści Jeda Martina zostają rozważone jako ślady zamierania nie tylko natury, ale i obrazu, a ten jest (nie)widocznym spoiwem języków antropocenu. Usunięcie go poza ich obręb wydaje się kuszącym wyzwaniem. Artykuł przedstawia taką próbę, ukazując m.in. ograniczenia Warburgiańskiej kategorii „atlasu”, będącej podstawą jego projektu Mnemosyne.

Abstract

Characterizing cellular diversity at different levels of biological organization and across data modalities is a prerequisite to understanding the function of cell types in the brain. Classification of neurons is also essential to manipulate cell types in controlled ways and to understand their variation and vulnerability in brain disorders. The BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN) is an integrated network of data-generating centers, data archives, and data standards developers, with the goal of systematic multimodal brain cell type profiling and characterization. Emphasis of the BICCN is on the whole mouse brain with demonstration of prototype feasibility for human and nonhuman primate (NHP) brains. Here, we provide a guide to the cellular and spatial approaches employed by the BICCN, and to accessing and using these data and extensive resources, including the BRAIN Cell Data Center (BCDC), which serves to manage and integrate data across the ecosystem. We illustrate the power of the BICCN data ecosystem through vignettes highlighting several BICCN analysis and visualization tools. Finally, we present emerging standards that have been developed or adopted toward Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR) neuroscience. The combined BICCN ecosystem provides a comprehensive resource for the exploration and analysis of cell types in the brain.

Abstract

The events of March 1968 in Poland have been widely studied from the point of view of political and social history. Recently, it has also become the subject of cultural studies. Yet, the research in the area of the visual arts has been neglected. In the text on the performance art in Poland around 1968 I pay special attention to the connection of art and political tensions of the era with the odNOWA Gallery in Poznań as a case study. The gallery was closed down after the happening by Andrzej Matuszewski entitled Proceeding on May 1969 and the event marked the break of the artists community with the cultural policy of the socialist state. It was too early to call their position ‘dissident’. Yet, I propose a notion of ‘distrust’, taken from Stanisław Barańczak’s writings, to define the peculiar stand of the avant-garde artists in Poland by the end of the 1960s that eventually led to dissidence in the 1980s.

Abstract

There has been a recent major upsurge in the concerns about reproducibility in many areas of science. Within the neuroimaging domain, one approach is to promote reproducibility is to target the re-executability of the publication. The information supporting such re-executability can enable the detailed examination of how an initial finding generalizes across changes in the processing approach, and sampled population, in a controlled scientific fashion. ReproNim: A Center for Reproducible Neuroimaging Computation is a recently funded initiative that seeks to facilitate the “last mile” implementations of core re-executability tools in order to reduce the accessibility barrier and increase adoption of standards and best practices at the neuroimaging research laboratory level. In this report, we summarize the overall approach and tools we have developed in this domain.

Abstract

International audience; NIDM-Results provides a harmonised representation for fMRI results reporting using Semantic Web technologies (Maumet et al. 2016). While those technologies are particularly well suited for aggregation across complex datasets, using them can be costly in terms of initial development time to generate and read the corresponding serialisations. While the technology is machine accessible, it can be difficult to comprehend by humans. This hinders adoption by scientific communities and by software developers used to more-lightweight data-exchange formats, such as JSON. JSON-LD: a JSON representation for semantic graphs (“JSON-LD 1.1” n.d.) was created to address this limitation and recent extensions to the specification allow creating JSON-LD documents that are structured more similar to simple JSON. This representation is simultaneously readable by a large number of JSON-based applications and by Semantic Web tools. Here we review our work on building a JSON-LD representation for NIDM-Results data and exposing it to Datalad (Halchenko et al. 2018), a data-management tool suitable for neuroimaging datasets with built-in support for metadata extraction and search.

9. libmpdata++ 1.0: a library of parallel MPDATA solvers for systems of generalised transport equations

Abstract

This paper accompanies the first release of libmpdata++, a C++ library implementing the multi-dimensional positive-definite advection transport algorithm (MPDATA) on regular structured grid. The library offers basic numerical solvers for systems of generalised transport equations. The solvers are forward-in-time, conservative and non-linearly stable. The libmpdata++ library covers the basic second-order-accurate formulation of MPDATA, its third-order variant, the infinite-gauge option for variable-sign fields and a flux-corrected transport extension to guarantee non-oscillatory solutions. The library is equipped with a non-symmetric variational elliptic solver for implicit evaluation of pressure gradient terms. All solvers offer parallelisation through domain decomposition using shared-memory parallelisation. The paper describes the library programming interface, and serves as a user guide. Supported options are illustrated with benchmarks discussed in the MPDATA literature. Benchmark descriptions include code snippets as well as quantitative representations of simulation results. Examples of applications include homogeneous transport in one, two and three dimensions in Cartesian and spherical domains; a shallow-water system compared with analytical solution (originally derived for a 2-D case); and a buoyant convection problem in an incompressible Boussinesq fluid with interfacial instability. All the examples are implemented out of the library tree. Regardless of the differences in the problem dimensionality, right-hand-side terms, boundary conditions and parallelisation approach, all the examples use the same unmodified library, which is a key goal of libmpdata++ design. The design, based on the principle of separation of concerns, prioritises the user and developer productivity. The libmpdata++ library is implemented in C++, making use of the Blitz++ multi-dimensional array containers, and is released as free/libre and open-source software.

Abstract

Results of four Lagrangian stratocumulus-to-shallow-cumulus transition cases as obtained from six different large-eddy simulation models are presented. The model output is remarkably consistent in terms of the representation of the evolution of the mean state, which is characterized by a stratocumulus cloud layer that rises with time and that warms and dries relative to the subcloud layer. Also, the effect of the diurnal insolation on cloud-top entrainment and the moisture flux at the top of the subcloud layer are consistently captured by the models. For some cases, the models diverge in terms of the liquid water path (LWP) during nighttime, which can be explained from the difference in the sign of the buoyancy flux at cloud base. If the subcloud buoyancy fluxes are positive, turbulence sustains a vertically well-mixed layer, causing a cloud layer that is relatively cold and moist and consequently has a high LWP. After some simulation time, all cases exhibit subcloud-layer dynamics that appear to be similar to those of the dry convective boundary layer. The humidity flux from the subcloud layer toward the stratocumulus cloud layer, which is one of the major sources of stratocumulus cloud liquid water, is larger during the night than during the day. The sensible heat flux becomes constant in time, whereas the latent heat flux tends to increase during the transition. These findings are explained from a budget analysis of the subcloud layer.

Examples of applications include: homogeneous transport in one, two and three dimensions in Cartesian and spherical domains; shallow-water system compared with analytical solution (originally derived for a 2D case); and a buoyant convection problem in an incompressible Boussinesq fluid with interfacial instability. All the examples are implemented out of the library tree. Regardless of the differences in the problem dimensionality, right-hand-side terms, boundary conditions and parallelisation approach, all the examples use the same unmodified library, which is a key goal of libmpdata++ design. The libmpdata++ library is implemented in C++, making use of the Blitz++ multi-dimensioanl array containers, and is released as free/libre and open-source software., Among the changes are: new chapter 5.4, updated presentation in chapter 6.3 and editorial corrections
