Over millions of years of evolution, arthropods have intricately developed and fine-tuned their highly sophisticated compound eye visual systems, serving as a valuable source of inspiration for human emulation and tracking. Femtosecond laser processing technology has attracted attention for its excellent precision, programmable design capabilities, and advanced three-dimensional processing characteristics, especially in the production of artificial bionic compound eye structures, showing unparalleled advantages. This comprehensive review initiates with a succinct introduction to the operational principles of biological compound eyes, providing essential context for the design of biomimetic counterparts. It subsequently offers a concise overview of crucial manufacturing methods for biomimetic compound eye structures. In addition, the application of femtosecond laser technology in the production of biomimetic compound eyes is also briefly introduced. We have theoretically investigated the spatial-temporal dynamics of extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through a two-slit plasmonic antenna under femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. The dynamic interference of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam with the transiently excited surface plasmon polariton waves are proposed to characterize the particular spatial-temporal evolutions of EOT. It is revealed that the dynamic EOT can be flexibly switched with tunable symmetry through the respective slit of a two-slit plasmonic antenna by manipulating the phase correlation of the crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam. This is explained as tunable interference dynamics by phase control of surface plasmon polariton waves, allowing the dynamic modulation of EOT at optimized oblique incidences of dual-beams. Furthermore, we have obtained the unobserved traits of symmetry-broken transient spectra of EOT from the respective up- and down-slit of the antenna under crossed femtosecond laser dual-beam irradiation. This study can provide fundamental insights into the ultrafast dynamics of EOT in two-slit plasmonic antennas, which can be helpful to advance a wide range of applications, such as ultrafast plasmonic switch, ultrahigh resolution imaging, the transient amplification of non-linear effects, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We theoretically investigated the plasmon trapping stability of a molecular-scale Au sphere via designing Au nanotip antenna hybridized with a graphene sheet embedded Silica substrate. A hybrid plasmonic trapping model is self-consistently built, which considers the surface plasmon excitation in the graphene-hybridized tip-substrate system for supporting the scattering and gradient optical forces on the optical diffraction-limit broken nanoscale. It is revealed that the plasmon trapping properties, including plasmon optical force and potential well, can be unprecedentedly adjusted by applying a graphene sheet at proper Fermi energy with respect to the designed tip-substrate geometry. This shows that the plasmon potential well of 218 kBT at room temperature can be determinately achieved for trapping of a 10 nm Au sphere by optimizing the surface medium film layer of the designed graphene-hybridized Silica substrate. This is explained as the crucial role of graphene hybridization participating in plasmon enhancement for generating the highly localized electric field, in return augmenting the trapping force acting on the trapped sphere with a deepened potential well. Due to the high contents of protein and fat in rainbow trout, it is highly susceptible to spoilage, which limits the storage and transportation processes. Exploring the spoilage microbial community during rainbow trout storage is essential to develop an effective preservation method. Here, the changes in the total bacterial colony and total volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N) during the storage of rainbow trout were investigated. Storage at 0 °C can effectively slow down the spoilage process with bacterial counts and TVB-N contents decreased from 8.7 log CFU/g and 18.7 mg/100 g obtained at 4 °C to 5.6 log CFU/g and 14.5 mg/100 g, respectively. 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing results showed that the diversity of microbial genera decreased during storage. Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, and Shewanells gradually became the dominant spoilage genera with contents of 59.9%, 18.6%, and 1.7%, respectively, in the late stage of storage. The spoilage abilities of bacteria belonging to the Pseudomonas and Shewanells genera were analyzed. Shewanella sp. S5-52 showed the highest level of TVB-N content (100.6 mg/100 g) in sterile fish juice, indicating that it had a strong spoilage ability. This study confirmed the dominant spoilage bacterial genera and evaluated the spoilage abilities of isolated strains during the storage of rainbow trout, which laid the foundation for further investigation of the spoilage mechanism of rainbow trout and other aquatic products. Solventogenesis and sporulation of clostridia are the main responsive adaptations to the acidic environment during acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation. It was hypothesized that five orphan histidine kinases (HKs) including Cac3319, Cac0323, Cac0903, Cac2730, and Cac0437 determined the cell fates between sporulation and solventogenesis. In this study, the comparative genomic analysis revealed that a mutation in cac0437 appeared to contribute to the nonsporulating feature of ATCC 55025. Hence, the individual and interactive roles of five HKs in regulating cell growth, metabolism, and sporulation were investigated. The fermentation results of mutants with different HK expression levels suggested that cac3319 and cac0437 played critical roles in regulating sporulation and acids and butanol biosynthesis. Morphological analysis revealed that cac3319 knockout abolished sporulation (Stage 0) whereas cac3319 overexpression promoted spore development (Stage VII), and cac0437 knockout initiated but blocked sporulation before Stage II, indicating the progression of sporulation was altered through engineering HKs. By combinatorial HKs knockout, the interactive effects between two different HKs were investigated. This study elucidated the regulatory roles of HKs in clostridial differentiation and demonstrated that HK engineering can be effectively used to control sporulation and enhance butanol biosynthesis. Microorganisms harbor bulks of functionally similar or undefined genes, which belong to paralogous gene family. There is a necessity of exploring combinatorial or interactive functions of these genes, but conventional loss‐of‐function strategy with one‐by‐one rounds suffers extremely low efficiency for generating mutant libraries with all gene permutations. Here, taking histidine kinases (HKs) in Clostridium acetobutylicum as a proof‐of‐concept, we developed a multi‐plasmid cotransformation strategy for generating all theoretical HKs combinations in one round. For five HKs with 31 theoretical combinations, the library containing 22 mutants within all the possible HKs‐inactivated combinations was constructed with 11 days compared to 242 days by conventional strategy, while the other 9 combinations cannot survive. Six mutants with the enhanced butanol production and tolerance were obtained with changes of cell development during fermentation, one of which could produce 54.2% more butanol (56.4% more solvents), while the butanol production of other mutants was unchanged or decreased. The cotransformation strategy demonstrated potentials for fast exploring pleiotropic function of paralogous family genes in cell survival, cell development, and target product metabolism. Under stress, Clostridium acetobutylicum sporulates and halts its metabolism, which limits its use in industrial acetone–butanol–ethanol (ABE) fermentation. It is challenging to manipulate the highly regulated sporulation program used by clostridia for survival. Four orphan histidine kinases (HKs) involved in the phosphorylation of Spo0A, a global regulator, were found to control sporulation, cell growth, and metabolism (acidogenesis and solventogenesis). Single knockout of cac3319 aborted sporulation at the initiation stage but enhanced butanol tolerance and production, whereas cac0437 knockout caused premature sporulation and inhibited the transition from acidogenesis to solventogenesis, resulting in early autolysis and low butanol production. No solvent was produced when both cac3319 and cac0903 were knocked out because the mutant lost the megaplasmid carrying solventogenesis genes. On the other hand, a mutant with double knockouts of cac3319 and cac0323 showed enhanced butanol production of >20 g L−1 by a repeated batch fermentation in a fibrous bed bioreactor, which enabled in situ product recovery via vapor stripping-vapor permeation to achieve the highest butanol production of 441.9 g L−1 ever reported. This study elucidated the regulatory roles of 4 HKs in controlling clostridial sporulation and solventogenesis with morphological, transcriptomics, and fermentation kinetics analyses, and demonstrated combinatory knockouts of HKs as a novel metabolic engineering approach to abort sporulation and enhance butanol production in ABE fermentation suitable for industrial application. We theoretically investigate a graphene-based heterogeneous plasmonic nano-trench for trapping noble metal and non-metal nanospheres. We propose heterogeneous plasmonic modeling geometry consisting of silver, gold and graphene for functioning plasmonic trapping operating at the near-infrared spectrum. For our designed model, the vertical potential well is 32 times larger than the Brownian motion energy KBT, indicating that the nanosphere can be stably trapped using the graphene covered gold and silver nano-trench structure. By varying the incident laser wavelength and angle of illumination, the gold nanosphere can be trapped stably 40 nm above the bottom of the proposed nano-trench structure. The graphene layer enhances the localized electric field of the nano-trench in comparison to a pure silver and gold nano-trench structure without a graphene layer on top. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study of oil-water separation in a desert. It demonstrates that sand shows quasi-underwater superoleophobicity and ultralow oil-adhesion for various oils upon immersion of sand in water. It suggests that a pre-wetted sand layer was successfully applied in oil-water separation by the use of the underwater superoleophobic properties.

The natural compound eye is a striking imaging device with a wealth of fascinating optical features such as a wide field of view (FOV), low aberration, and high sensitivity. Dragonflies in particular possess large, sophisticated compound eyes that exhibit high resolving power and information-processing capacity. Here, a large-scale artificial compound eye inspired by the unique designs of natural counterparts is presented. The artificial compound eye is created by a high-efficiency strategy that combines single-pulse femtosecond laser wet etching with thermal embossing. These eyes have a macrobase diameter of 5 mm and ≈30 000 close-packed ommatidia with an average diameter of 24.5 μm. Moreover, the optical properties of the artificial compound eyes are investigated; the results confirm that the eye demonstrates advanced imaging quality, an exceptionally wide FOV of up to 140°, and low aberration. Reported here is the direct fabrication of the convex microlens arrays on poymethylmethacrylate using laser-induced structural modification. Based on single femtosecond pulse in situ modification, sixty thousand convex microlenses, whose diameters was <12~\mu \textm , could be fabricated per minute, exhibiting much higher efficiency than conventional laser direct writing technique. The formation mechanism was mainly attributed to photodecomposition, which would result in the scission of polymer chains. The shape of microlenses could be tuned by the laser power. In addition, the good optical performance of the microlens was revealed by its ability of high resolution imaging. This technique may open up a new way of preparing low-cost and large-area convex structure which is widely used in many advanced microdevices, such as lab-on-chips and biomimetic compound eyes. Reported here is a bioinspired fabrication of transparent underwater superoleophobic and anti-oil surfaces using a femtosecond laser treatment. Rough nanoscale structures were readily created on silica glass surfaces by femtosecond laser-induced ablation. Underwater superoleophobicity and ultralow oil-adhesion were obtained by the rough nanostructures with a wide variation of processing parameters, and the as-prepared surfaces exhibited a high transparency in water. This phenomenon is attributed to the presence of the water environment because scattering and refraction are effectively weakened. As a maskless and cost-effective method, the femtosecond laser processing of transparent materials (glass) may provide a new method to create biomimetic transparent underwater surfaces, allowing for the development of novel underwater anti-oil optical devices. Femtosecond laser microfabrication has been recently utilized in interface science to modify the liquid wettability of solid surfaces. In this paper, a silicon surface with hierarchical micro/nanostructure is fabricated by a femtosecond laser. Similar to fish scales, the laser-induced surface shows superhydrophilicity in air and superoleophobicity underwater. The oil contact angles can reach up to 159.4 ± 1° and 150.3 ± 2°, respectively, for 1,2-dichloroethane and chloroform droplets in water. In addition, the surface exhibits ultralow oil-adhesion. In the oil-water-solid three-phase system, water can be trapped in the hierarchical rough structure and form a repulsive oil layer according to the extended Cassie's theory. The contact area between the as-prepared surface and oil droplets is significantly reduced, resulting in superoleophobicity and ultralow oil-adhesion in water. In nature, a frog can easily rest on a lotus leaf even though the frog's weight is several times the weight of the lotus leaf. Inspired by the lotus leaf, we fabricated a planar superhydrophobic microboat (SMB) with a superhydrophobic upper surface on a PDMS sheet which was irradiated by a focused femtosecond laser. The SMB can not only float effortlessly over the water surface but can also hold up some heavy objects, exhibiting an excellent loading capacity. The water surface is curved near the edge of the upper surface and the SMB's upper edge is below the water level, greatly enhancing the displacement. Experimental results and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the superhydrophobicity on the edge of the upper surface is responsible for the SMB's large loading capacity. Four nonionic surfactants C 16 E n with varying EO number were synthesized. The characteristics of this series of nonionic surfactants, including surface tension, critical micelle concentration (CMC), interfacial activity, and surface pressure, were presented. The surface tension data indicated that ? CMC increased with hydrophilic PEO chain length while CMC decreased. The area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface increased as PEO chain length increased. The probe, pyrene, was employed to investigate nonionic micelles of varying EO number in steady-state fluorescence. The CMC, obtained from the I 3 /I 1 ratio, agreed well with the results of the surface tension experiment. The interfacial properties were studied by using a heptane-toluene/water model system. We found that interfacial activities increased with the degree of ethoxylation because of their hydrophile-lipophile balance. From the p–A isotherm, it can be deduced that C 16 E n nonionic surfactants had excellent molecular flexibility. The surface pressure data also showed that this kind of surfactant with longer PEO chains occupied a larger area per molecule at the interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
