Purpose The decreasing number of ophthalmologists leads to evaluate preliminary screening procedures performed by paramedical professionnals. The ultrawide field retinography is a recent technique allowing to obtain, simply and reproducibly, central and peripheral retinal images with or without mydriasis.The main objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic agreement between the reading of the ultra wide field images by a paramedical professional compared to a doctor. Methods A prospective diagnostic two-center study was performed in the ophthalmological departments of two University Hospitals (Reims and Nancy) including all patients eligible in an outpatient clinic. For each patient, an ultra wide field retinography was taken with an Optomap (Optos) and an image analysis was performed by both a paramedical professional and an ophthalmologist. The agreement (kappa coefficient) between both image readings was evaluated. Results 901 patients were included from July 2011 to November 2014. A good agreement was found between paramedical professionals and ophthalmologists for the global analysis (normal or abnormal image) ( k = 0.62 [0.59 to 0.66]).This good concordance was also found for retinal lesions, including the macula (k = 0.70 [0.66 to 0.73]) and particularly for the analysis of red lesions such as hemorrhages, dilated veins and retinal detachment. However, the agreement was poor for optic disc analysis (k = 0.38 [0.32 to 0.44]). Conclusions In screening procedures, paramedical professionals were able to identify retinal abnormalities on ultra wide field image in a significant number of cases. Introduction: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) is the main treatment for Fuchs' dystrophy (FECD). The outcomes are excellent, but the final visual recovery may vary from patient to patient with sometimes no obvious reason of such a spread., Methods: We conducted a clinical prospective multicentric study to identify the predictive factors for the visual result 1 year after surgery. Eighty three patients (83 eyes) were included., Results: Postoperative BCVA after 1 year was 0.20 ± 0.18 logMAR. Logistic regression revealed that good visual recovery correlated negatively with preoperative central macular thickness ( p < 0.001) and the need for rebubbling ( p = 0.05), and positively with preoperative visual acuity ( p = 0.009). Multivariate formula to predict the 1-year BCVA has been suggested., Discussion: Preoperative retinal status seems to be the main predictive factor for long-term visual result after DMEK. Undetected refractive errors (REs) in children can lead to irreversible vision loss. This study aimed to show the proportions of REs in French children using cycloplegic refraction. Multicentre cross-sectional retrospective study including children with cycloplegic refraction and without associated ocular conditions from 2015 to 2018 in French eye clinics. The following data were collected: age, symptoms of eye strain, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), cycloplegic refraction. The analysis included 48,163 children (mean age: 7.75 years, range: 2 to 12 years). The proportion of each RE was as follows: emmetropia (- 0.50 < Spherical Equivalent (SE) ≤  + 2.0; 58.3%), hyperopia (+ 2.0 [Formula: see text] SE [Formula: see text]+5; 17.2%), myopia (- 6 [Formula: see text] SE [Formula: see text]- 0.50; 15.5%), high myopia (SE < - 6; 0.5%), high hyperopia (SE >  + 5; 3.6%), mixed astigmatism (4.9%). Anisometropia (SE difference ≥ 1.5) was found in 5.0%. Functional amblyopia in children attending primary school (aged over 6 years) was encountered in 2.7%. Symptoms of eye strain were frequent (70%) but not specific to any RE. REs are frequently found in French children and may remain undetected in the absence of symptoms of eye strain.
