From chemical reactivity to mechanical strength, crystal texture plays a central role in determining the key properties of solids. In organic electronics, texture determines the charge carrier mobility of the active layer in devices such as organic field effect transistors (OFETs). Current methods of controlling the texture of thin films of organic crystals through solution processing are restricted by the stochastic nucleation that accompanies rapid solvent evaporation. We report here a facile method to create biaxially textured crystals of thin films of discotic organic semiconductor, HAT6 (2,3,6,7,10,11-Hexakis(hexyloxy)triphenylene). We first direct the self-assembly of the precursor discotic liquid crystalline (DLC) state; the columnar hexagonal (ColH) phase of HAT6 is biaxially aligned in lithographically fabricated microchannels. Synchrotron X-ray scattering measurements reveal the direction of π-stacking is perpendicular to the channel walls. The biaxial alignment and the directionality of π-stacking in the liquid crystalline phase are transferred to the crystalline state through rapid cooling. Contrary to previous reports, we observe preservation of anisotropy upon crystallization of DLCs. As a significant fraction of organic semiconductors exhibit a liquid crystalline phase, we expect our method of creating textured crystals to be of broad interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue phases (BPs) are soft and stimuli‐responsive photonic crystals that are interesting for sensing, display, and lasing applications. Polycrystallinity has, however, limited both the study and applicability of BPs. Continuum simulations, which lack molecule‐specific details, predict that striped chemical patterns, consisting of alternating homeotropic and planar regions, can be used to nucleate single crystals of BPs. Here it is experimentally demonstrated that, independent of the chemistry and complexity of the BP forming material, chemical patterns direct the self‐assembly of BPs; these results indicate that a general, thermodynamics‐based continuum description of BP self‐assembly is adequate for a broad range of materials. When the pattern periodicity equals the BPII unit cell size, single crystals with (100) orientation form for all studied materials. Chemical patterns also promote the growth of BPI crystals with (110) orientation. Importantly, the self‐assembly of a photopolymerizable BP is directed and thermally stable, UV‐polymerized single crystals are prepared. Numerous proteins target lipid droplets (LDs) through amphipathic helices (AHs). It is generally assumed that AHs insert bulky hydrophobic residues in packing defects at the LD surface. However, this model does not explain the targeting of perilipins, the most abundant and specific amphipathic proteins of LDs, which are weakly hydrophobic. A striking example is Plin4, whose gigantic and repetitive AH lacks bulky hydrophobic residues. Using a range of complementary approaches, we show that Plin4 forms a remarkably immobile and stable protein layer at the surface of cellular or in vitro generated oil droplets, and decreases LD size. Plin4 AH stability on LDs is exquisitely sensitive to the nature and distribution of its polar residues. These results suggest that Plin4 forms stable arrangements of adjacent AHs via polar/electrostatic interactions, reminiscent of the organization of apolipoproteins in lipoprotein particles, thus pointing to a general mechanism of AH stabilization via lateral interactions. The authors developed a mathematical model of arachidonic acid (AA) degradation to prostaglandins (PGs) and leukotrienes (LTs), which are implicated in the processes of inflammation and hypersensitivity to non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The model focuses on two PGs (PGE2 and PGD2) and one LT (LTC4), their % increases and their ratios. Results are compared with experimental studies obtained from non‐asthmatics (NAs), and asthmatics tolerant (ATA) or intolerant (AIA) to aspirin. Simulations are carried out for predefined model populations NA, ATA and three AIA, based on the differences of two enzymes, PG E synthase and/or LTC4‐synthase in two states, that is, no‐inflammation and inflammation. Their model reveals that the model population with concomitant malfunctions in both enzymes is the most sensitive to NSAIDs, since the duration and the capacity for bronchoconstriction risk are highest after simulated oral dosing of indomethacin. Furthermore, inflammation prolongs the duration of the bronchoconstriction risk in all AIA model populations, and the sensitivity analysis reveals multiple possible scenarios leading to hypersensitivity, especially if inflammatory processes affect the expression of multiple enzymes of the AA metabolic pathway. Their model estimates the expected fold‐changes in enzyme activities and gives valuable information for further targeted transcriptomic/proteomic and metabolomic studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are compelling responsive materials with applications in next-generation sensing, imaging, and display technologies. While electric fields and surface treatments have been used to manipulate the molecular organization and, subsequently, the optical properties of CLCs, their response to controlled fluid flow has remained largely unexplored. Here, we investigate the influence of microfluidic flow on the structure of thermotropic CLCs that can exhibit structural coloration. We demonstrate that the shear forces that arise from microfluidic flow align the helical axis of CLCs; alignment is a prerequisite for harnessing the promising photonic properties of CLCs. Moreover, we show that microfluidic flow can generate non-equilibrium structures exhibiting photonic band gaps that are inaccessible in the stationary cholesteric phase. Our findings have implications for the use of CLCs in applications involving flow processing such as additive manufacturing.

Pure liquids in thermodynamic equilibrium are structurally homogeneous. In liquid crystals, flow and light pulses are used to create reconfigurable domains with polar order. Moreover, through careful engineering of concerted microfluidic flows and localized optothermal fields, it is possible to achieve complete control over the nucleation, growth, and shape of such domains. Experiments, theory, and simulations indicate that the resulting structures can be stabilized indefinitely, provided the liquids are maintained in a controlled nonequilibrium state. The resulting sculpted liquids could find applications in microfluidic devices for selective encapsulation of solutes and particles into optically active compartments that interact with external stimuli.
