Abstract

The ALADDIN project aims at detecting warm dust populations around nearby main sequence stars. In order to achieve the significantly improved sensitivity with respect to existing instruments, the architecture of the system is focused and optimised for the mission: ALADDIN implements the nulling interferometry technique at the focal plane of a 2-telescope interferometer mounted on a rotating structural beam. Concerning the beam combining nulling instrument, the ALADDIN design is inherited from a Definition Study of the VLTI/GENIE instrument. In this paper, we demonstrate how the ALADDIN instrument preliminary definition can be made simpler and more representative of a space instrument than GENIE thanks to both the outstanding atmospheric properties of Dome C and the dedicated architecture of the system. Finally, we discuss the compatibility of the instrument with the Antarctic environment and constraints, and underline the experimental and industrial know-how learnt from the MAII and PERSEE nulling breadboards in which our Team is also involved.

Abstract

We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39), identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer, with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS 1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious target for further detailed studies., In press in A&A Letters

Abstract

The ISOGAL project is a survey of the stellar populations, structure, and recent star formation history of the inner disk and bulge of the Galaxy. ISOGAL combines 15 and 7micron ISOCAM observations with DENIS IJKs data to determine the nature of a source and the interstellar extinction. In this paper we report an ISOGAL study of a small field in the inner Galactic Bulge (l=0deg, b=1.0deg, area=0.035 sq. deg) as a prototype of the larger area ISOGAL survey of the inner Galaxy. The five wavelengths of ISOGAL+DENIS, together with the relatively low and constant extinction in front of this specific field, allow reliable determination of the nature of the sources. The primary scientific result of this paper is evidence that the most numerous class of ISOGAL 15micron sources are Red Giants in the Galactic bulge and central disk, with luminosities just above or close to the RGB tip and weak mass-loss rates. They form loose sequences in the magnitude-colour diagrams [15]/Ks-[15] and [15]/[7]-[15]. Their large excesses at 15micron with respect to 2micron and 7micron is due to circumstellar dust produced by mass-loss at low rates. These ISOGAL results are the first systematic evidence and study of dust emission at this early stage (''Intermediate'' AGB), before the onset of the large mass-loss phase. 23. New CO and HCN sources associated with IRAS carbon stars

Abstract

Emission of CO and HCN was detected in 22 out of a sample of 53 IRAS sources classified as unidentified carbon-rich objects. The sample was selected according to the presence of the silicon carbide feature as revealed by low-resolution spectra. The molecular line widths indicate that the CO and HCN emission arises from the circumstellar envelopes of very highly evolved stars undergoing mass loss. The visible stars tend to be deficient in CO as compared with unidentified sources. Most the detected CO and HCN IRAS stars are distinct and thick-shelled objects, but their infrared and CO luminosities are similar to those of IRC + 102156 AFGL and IRC-CO evolved stars. The 12 micron flux seems to be a good indicator of the distance, hence a guide for molecular searches.

Abstract

During its emergence from the Saturnian shadow on June 28, 1980, Titan was observed simultaneously in the visible and IR ranges (6000-9000 A, and 11.8 and 20 microns). The eclipse observation indicates that thin-atmosphere models with a modest greenhouse effect are likely to be incorrect. A thin atmosphere of pure methane in equilibrium with an ice surface of methane is in marginal agreement with the present data, but improved VLA temperature measurements would be a crucial test of this model. Both the eclipse observation and VLA measurements agree with a nitrogen-dominant atmospheric model, as indicated by preliminary Voyager results.

Near-infrared spectro-photometry, at a spectral resolution of ~100, allows to characterize a great variety of stellar sources, from late-type giants to emission line stars. Various components of the interstellar medium, including circumstellar environments and Planetary Nebulae, can also be traced. We propose AIFU, a fiber-fed nearinfrared low-resolution spectrograph. With a 1′×1′ field of view and a 2″ sampling, AIFU will be well suited to survey spectroscopically stellar populations in large areas of the Galaxy and of the Magellanic Clouds, as e.g. star-forming regions, as well as to image extended sources, like circumstellar shells around nearby evolved stars, PDRs, simultaneously in many different emission lines. We report the discovery of a new M9.0 dwarf at only 8.2 pc, which we identified in our search for nearby ultracool dwarf ( , later than M8.0) in the DENIS data base. We measure a very high proper motion of 2.5 arcsec yr−1. The PC3 index measured from its low-resolution spectrum gives a spectrophotometric distance of 8.2 pc. Abstract

International audience; The Gattini cameras are two site testing instruments for the measurement of optical sky brightness, large area cloud cover and auroral detection of the night sky above the high altitude Dome C site in Antarctica. The cameras have been operating since installation in January 2006 and are currently at the end of the first Antarctic winter season. The cameras are transit in nature and are virtually identical, both adopting Apogee Alta CCD detectors. By taking frequent images of the night sky we obtain long term cloud cover statistics, measure the sky background intensity as a function of solar and lunar altitude and phase and directly measure the spatial extent of bright aurora if present and when they occur. The full data set will return in December 2006 however a limited amount of data has been transferred via the Iridium network enabling preliminary data reduction and system evaluation. An update of the project is presented together with preliminary results from data taken since commencement of the winter season.
