We investigate gauge anomalies in the context of orbifold conformal field theories. Such anomalies manifest as failures of modular invariance in the constituents of the orbifold partition function. We review how this irregularity is classified by cohomology and how extending the orbifold group can remove it. Working with such extensions requires an understanding of the consistent ways in which extending groups can act on the twisted states of the original symmetry, which leads us to a discrete-torsion like choice that exists in orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups. We review a general method for constructing such extensions and investigate its application to orbifolds. Through numerous explicit examples we test the conjecture that consistent extensions should be equivalent to (in general multiple copies of) orbifolds by non-anomalous subgroups., 37 pages, 2 appendices, 3 figures

In this paper we describe a systematic method to compute elliptic genera of (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories in two dimensions with gauge group G/Gamma (for G semisimple and simply-connected, Gamma a subgroup of the center of G) with various discrete theta angles. We apply the technique to examples of pure gauge theories with low-rank gauge groups. Our results are consistent with expectations from decomposition of two-dimensional theories with finite global one-form symmetries and with computations of supersymmetry breaking for some discrete theta angles in pure gauge theories. The pure spinor formulation of superstring theory includes an interacting sector of central charge $c_{\lambda}=22$, which can be realized as a curved $\beta\gamma$ system on the cone over the orthogonal Grassmannian $\text{OG}^{+}(5,10)$. We find that the spectrum of the $\beta\gamma$ system organizes into representations of the $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{e}_6$ affine algebra at level $-3$, whose $\mathfrak{so}(10)_{-3}\oplus {\mathfrak u}(1)_{-4}$ subalgebra encodes the rotational and ghost symmetries of the system. As a consequence, the pure spinor partition function decomposes as a sum of affine $\mathfrak{e}_6$ characters. We interpret this as an instance of a more general pattern of enhancements in curved $\beta\gamma$ systems, which also includes the cases $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{so}(8)$ and $\mathfrak{e}_7$, corresponding to target spaces that are cones over the complex Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(2,4)$ and the complex Cayley plane $\mathbb{OP}^2$. We identify these curved $\beta\gamma$ systems with the chiral algebras of certain $2d$ $(0,2)$ CFTs arising from twisted compactification of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs on $S^2$., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure; v2: added references, minor updates

We apply the recent proposal for mirrors of nonabelian (2,2) supersymmetric two-dimensional gauge theories to make predictions for two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups G2, F4, E6, E7, and E8. We compute the mirror Landau-Ginzburg models and predict excluded Coulomb loci and Coulomb branch relations (quantum cohomology). We also discuss the relationship between weight lattice normalizations and theta angle periodicities in the proposal, and explore different conventions for the mirrors. Finally, we discuss the behavior of pure gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups under RG flow, and describe evidence that any pure supersymmetric two-dimensional gauge theory with connected and simply-connected semisimple gauge group flows in the IR to a free theory of as many twisted chiral superfields as the rank of the gauge group, extending previous results for SU, SO, and Sp gauge theories., 90 pages, LaTeX

In this short paper we look at the action of T-duality and string duality groups on fermions, in maximally-supersymmetric theories and related theories. Briefly, we argue that typical duality groups such as SL(2,Z) have sign ambiguities in their actions on fermions, and propose that pertinent duality groups be extended by Z_2, to groups such as the metaplectic group. Specifically, we look at duality groups arising from mapping class groups of tori in M theory compactifications, T-duality, ten-dimensional type IIB S-duality, and (briefly) four-dimensional N=4 super Yang-Mills, and in each case, propose that the full duality group is a nontrivial Z_2 extension of the duality group acting on bosonic degrees of freedom, to more accurately describe possible actions on fermions. We also walk through U-duality groups for toroidal compactifications to nine, eight, and seven dimensions, which enables us to perform cross-consistency tests of these proposals., 20 pages, LaTeX; v2: references added

One of the open problems in understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry concerns the construction of Toda-like Landau-Ginzburg mirrors to (0,2) theories on Fano spaces. In this paper, we begin to fill this gap by making an ansatz for (0,2) Toda-like theories mirror to (0,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on products of projective spaces, with deformations of the tangent bundle, generalizing a special case previously worked out for P1xP1. We check this ansatz by matching correlation functions of the B/2-twisted Toda-like theories to correlation functions of corresponding A/2-twisted nonlinear sigma models, computed primarily using localization techniques. In this paper we compute spaces of chiral operators in general two-dimensional (0,2) nonlinear sigma models, both in theories twistable to the A/2 or B/2 model, as well as in non-twistable theories, and apply them to check recent duality conjectures. The fact that in a nonlinear sigma model, the Fock vacuum can act as a section of a line bundle on the target space plays a crucial role in our (0,2) computations, so we begin with a review of this property. We also take this opportunity to show how even in (2,2) theories, the Fock vacuum encodes in this way choices of target space spin structures, and discuss how such choices enter the A and B model topological field theories. We then compute chiral operators in general (0,2) nonlinear sigma models, and apply them to test the recent Gadde-Gukov-Putrov triality proposal, which says that certain triples of (0,2) GLSMs should RG flow to nontrivial IR fixed points. We find that different UV theories in the same proposed universality class do not necessarily have the same space of chiral operators -- but, the mismatched operators do not contribute to elliptic genera and are in non-integrable representations of the proposed IR affine symmetry groups, suggesting that the mismatched states become massive along RG flow. We find this state matching in examples not only of different geometric phases of the same GLSMs, but also in phases of different GLSMs, indirectly verifying the triality proposal, and giving a clean demonstration that (0,2) chiral rings are not topologically protected. In this letter we follow up recent work of Halverson-Kumar-Morrison on some exotic examples of gauged linear sigma models (GLSM's). Specifically, they describe a set of U(1) x Z_2 GLSM's with superpotentials that are quadratic in p fields, rather than linear as is typically the case. These theories RG flow to sigma models on branched double covers, where the double cover is realized via a Z_2 gerbe. For that gerbe structure, and hence the double cover, the Z_2 factor in the gauge group is essential. In this paper, we apply recent methods of localized GLSMs to make predictions for Gromov-Witten invariants of noncommutative resolutions, as defined by e.g. Kontsevich, and use those predictions to examine the connectivity of the SCFT moduli space. Noncommutative spaces, in the present sense, are defined by their sheaves, their B-branes. Examples of abstract CFT's whose B-branes correspond with those defining noncommutative spaces arose in examples of abelian GLSMs describing branched double covers, in which the double cover structure arises nonperturbatively. This note will examine the GLSM for P^7[2,2,2,2], which realizes this phenomenon. Its Landau-Ginzburg point is a noncommutative resolution of a (singular) branched double cover of P^3. Regardless of the complex structure of the large-radius P^7[2,2,2,2], the Landau-Ginzburg point is always a noncommutative resolution of a singular space, which begs the question of whether the noncommutative resolution is connected in SCFT moduli space by a complex structure deformation to a smooth branched double cover. Using recent localization techniques, we make a prediction for the Gromov-Witten invariants of the noncommutative resolution, and find that they do not match those of a smooth branched double cover, telling us that these abstract CFT's are not continuously connected to sigma models on smooth branched double covers., 19 pages, LaTeX; v2: typos fixed, references added

The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical theory of the half-twisted $(0, 2)$ gauged linear sigma model and its correlation functions that agrees with and extends results from physics. The theory is associated to a smooth projective toric variety $X$ and a deformation $\mathcal{E}$ of its tangent bundle $T_X$. It gives a quantum deformation of the cohomology ring of the exterior algebra of $\mathcal{E}*$. We prove that in the general case, the correlation functions are independent of "nonlinear" deformations. We derive quantum sheaf cohomology relations that correctly specialize to the ordinary quantum cohomology relations described by Batyrev in the special case $\mathcal{E} = T_X$.

In this paper, we will outline computations of quantum sheaf cohomology for deformations of tangent bundles of toric varieties, for those deformations describable as deformations of toric Euler sequences. Quantum sheaf cohomology is a heterotic analogue of quantum cohomology, a quantum deformation of the classical product on sheaf cohomology groups, that computes nonperturbative corrections to analogues of (27*)^3 couplings in heterotic string computations. Previous computations have relied on either physics-based GLSM techniques or computation-intensive brute-force Cech cohomology techniques. This paper describes methods for greatly simplifying mathematical computations, and derives more general results than previously obtainable with GLSM techniques. In this note we construct rigidly supersymmetric gauged sigma models and gauge theories on certain Einstein four-manifolds, and discuss constraints on these theories. In work elsewhere, it was recently shown that on some nontrivial Einstein four-manifolds such as AdS$_4$, N=1 rigidly supersymmetric sigma models are constrained to have target spaces with exact K\"ahler forms. Similarly, in gauged sigma models and gauge theories, we find that supersymmetry imposes constraints on Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters, which have the effect of enforcing that K\"ahler forms on quotient spaces be exact. In this short note we discuss discrete torsion in orientifolds. In particular, we apply the physical understanding of discrete torsion worked out several years ago, as group actions on B fields, to the case of orientifolds, and recover some old results of Braun and Stefanski concerning group cohomology and twisted equivariant K theory. In this paper we discuss some examples of abelian gauged linear sigma models realizing twisted derived equivalences between non-birational spaces, and realizing geometries in novel fashions. Examples of gauged linear sigma models with non-birational Kahler phases are a relatively new phenomenon. Most of our examples involve gauged linear sigma models for complete intersections of quadric hypersurfaces, though we also discuss some more general cases and their interpretation. We also propose a more general understanding of the relationship between Kahler phases of gauged linear sigma models, namely that they are related by (and realize) Kuznetsov's `homological projective duality.' Along the way, we shall see how `noncommutative spaces' (in Kontsevich's sense) are realized physically in gauged linear sigma models, providing examples of new types of conformal field theories. Throughout, the physical realization of stacks plays a key role in interpreting physical structures appearing in GLSMs, and we find that stacks are implicitly much more common in GLSMs than previously realized., 54 pages, LaTeX; v2: typo fixed

We examine to what extent heterotic string worldsheets can describe arbitrary E8xE8 gauge fields. The traditional construction of heterotic strings builds each E8 via a Spin(16)/Z2 subgroup, typically realized as a current algebra by left-moving fermions, and as a result, only E8 gauge fields reducible to Spin(16)/Z2 gauge fields are directly realizable in standard constructions. However, there exist perturbatively consistent E8 gauge fields which can not be reduced to Spin(16)/Z2, and so cannot be described within standard heterotic worldsheet constructions. A natural question to then ask is whether there exists any (0,2) SCFT that can describe such E8 gauge fields. To answer this question, we first show how each ten-dimensional E8 partition function can be built up using other subgroups than Spin(16)/Z2, then construct ``fibered WZW models'' which allow us to explicitly couple current algebras for general groups and general levels to heterotic strings. This technology gives us a very general approach to handling heterotic compactifications with arbitrary principal bundles. In this paper we will discuss gauged linear sigma model descriptions of toric stacks. Toric stacks have a simple description in terms of (symplectic, GIT) ${\bf C}^{\times}$ quotients of homogeneous coordinates, in exactly the same form as toric varieties. We describe the physics of the gauged linear sigma models that formally coincide with the mathematical description of toric stacks, and check that physical predictions of those gauged linear sigma models exactly match the corresponding stacks. We also check in examples that when a given toric stack has multiple presentations in a form accessible as a gauged linear sigma model, that the IR physics of those different presentations matches, so that the IR physics is presentation-independent, making it reasonable to associate CFT's to stacks, not just presentations of stacks. We discuss mirror symmetry for stacks, using Morrison-Plesser-Hori-Vafa techniques to compute mirrors explicitly, and also find a natural generalization of Batyrev's mirror conjecture. In these notes we review recent work on describing D-branes with nonzero Higgs vevs in terms of sheaves, which gives a physical on-shell D-brane interpretation to more sheaves than previously understood as describing D-branes. The mathematical ansatz for this encoding is checked by comparing open string spectra between D-branes with nonzero Higgs vevs to Ext groups between the corresponding sheaves. We continue our study of heterotic compactifications on non-Kahler complex manifolds with torsion. We give further evidence of the consistency of the six-dimensional manifold presented earlier and discuss the anomaly cancellation and possible supergravity description for a generic non-Kahler complex manifold using the newly proposed superpotential. The manifolds studied in our earlier papers had zero Euler characteristics. We construct new examples of non-Kahler complex manifolds with torsion in lower dimensions, that have non-zero Euler characteristics. Some of these examples are constructed from consistent backgrounds in F-theory and therefore are solutions to the string equations of motion. We discuss consistency conditions for compactifications of the heterotic string on smooth non-Kahler manifolds and illustrate how some results well known for Calabi-Yau compactifications, including counting the number of generations, apply to the non-Kahler case. These notes are a writeup of lectures given at the twelfth Oporto meeting on ``Geometry, Topology, and Physics,'' and at the Adelaide workshop ``Strings and Mathematics 2003,'' primarily geared towards a physics audience. We review current work relating boundary states in the open string B model on Calabi-Yau manifolds to sheaves. Such relationships provide us with a mechanism for counting open string states in situations where the physical spectrum calculation is nearly intractable -- after translating to mathematics, such calculations become easy. We describe several different approaches to these models, and also describe how these models are changed by varying physical circumstances -- flat B field backgrounds, orbifolds, and nonzero Higgs vevs. We also discuss mathematical interpretations of operator products, and how such mathematical interpretations can be checked physically. In this paper we explicitly work out the precise relationship between Ext groups and massless modes of D-branes wrapped on complex submanifolds of Calabi-Yau manifolds. Specifically, we explicitly compute the boundary vertex operators for massless Ramond sector states, in open string B models describing Calabi-Yau manifolds at large radius, directly in BCFT using standard methods. Naively these vertex operators are in one-to-one correspondence with certain sheaf cohomology groups (as is typical for such vertex operator calculations), which are related to the desired Ext groups via spectral sequences. However, a subtlety in the physics of the open string B model has the effect of physically realizing those spectral sequences in BRST cohomology, so that the vertex operators are actually in one-to-one correspondence with Ext group elements. This gives an extremely concrete physical test of recent proposals regarding the relationship between derived categories and D-branes. In this short review we outline some recent developments in understanding string orbifolds. In particular, we outline the recent observation that string orbifolds do not precisely describe string propagation on quotient spaces, but rather are literally sigma models on objects called quotient stacks, which are closely related to (but not quite the same as) quotient spaces. We show how this is an immediate consequence of definitions, and also how this explains a number of features of string orbifolds, from the fact that the CFT is well-behaved to orbifold Euler characteristics. Put another way, many features of string orbifolds previously considered ``stringy'' are now understood as coming from the target-space geometry; one merely needs to identify the correct target-space geometry., 10 pages, LaTeX, 1 figure, v2: new material added

In this paper we describe explicitly how the twisted ``bundles'' on a D-brane worldvolume in the presence of a nontrivial B field, can be understood in terms of sheaves on stacks. In this short note we briefly review some recent developments in understanding discrete torsion. Specifically, we give a short overview of the highlights of a group of recent papers which give the basic understanding of discrete torsion. Briefly, those papers observe that discrete torsion can be completely understood simply as the choice of action of the orbifold group on the B field. In this paper we conjecture a reformulation of the monomial-divisor mirror map for (2,2) mirror symmetry, valid at a boundary of the moduli space, that is easily extended to also include tangent bundle deformations -- an important step towards understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry. We check our conjecture in a few simple cases, and thereby illustrate how to perform calculations using a description of sheaves recently published by Knutson, Sharpe., 21 pages, LaTex, 2 figures, title altered to avoid confusion with an older paper -- no other changes

In this paper we give an inherently toric description of a special class of sheaves (known as equivariant sheaves) over toric varieties, due in part to A. A. Klyachko. We apply this technology to heterotic compactifications, in particular to the (0,2) models of Distler, Kachru, and also discuss how knowledge of equivariant sheaves can be used to reconstruct information about an entire moduli space of sheaves. Many results relevant to heterotic compactifications previously known only to mathematicians are collected here -- for example, results concerning whether the restriction of a stable sheaf to a Calabi-Yau hypersurface remains stable are stated. We also describe substructure in the Kahler cone, in which moduli spaces of sheaves are independent of Kahler class only within any one subcone. We study F theory compactifications in light of this fact, and also discuss how it can be seen in the context of equivariant sheaves on toric varieties. In this paper we study extremal transitions between heterotic string compactifications, i.e., transitions between pairs (M,V) where M is a Calabi-Yau manifold and V a gauge bundle. Bundle transitions are described using language recently espoused by Friedman, Morgan, Witten. We study two-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(0,\ 2\right) $$ supersymmetric gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) using supersymmetric localization. We consider $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(0,\ 2\right) $$ theories with an R-symmetry, which can always be defined on curved space by a pseudo-topological twist while preserving one of the two supercharges of flat space. For GLSMs which are deformations of $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(2,\ 2\right) $$ GLSMs and retain a Coulomb branch, we consider the A/2-twist and compute the genus-zero correlation functions of certain pseudo-chiral operators, which generalize the simplest twisted chiral ring operators away from the $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(2,\ 2\right) $$ locus. These correlation functions can be written in terms of a certain residue operation on the Coulomb branch, generalizing the Jeffrey-Kirwan residue prescription relevant for the $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(2,\ 2\right) $$ locus. For abelian GLSMs, we reproduce existing results with new formulas that render the quantum sheaf cohomology relations and other properties manifest. For non-abelian GLSMs, our methods lead to new results. As an example, we briefly discuss the quantum sheaf cohomology of the Grassmannian manifold.
