Wildfires have become increasingly common across the United States in recent decades, with significant implications for ecosystem health and sustainability. The viability and metabolic activity of soil bacteria are key for maintaining global nitrogen-cycling processes and are likely to be impacted as burn severity continues to increase. To this end, wildfire-affected soils were studied to examine the impact on nitrogen-cycling bacteria in soils affected by low, moderate, and high wildfire severities. This objective was achieved by characterizing soil bacterial communities in control (i.e., unburned) and burned soils collected one year following the Woolsey wildfire (Los Angeles and Ventura Counties, CA, USA) using Illumina MiSeq 16S sequencing and profiling nitrogen-cycling gene expression using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Six families and 17 genera were significantly (Spearman rs > |0.4|; p < 0.05) negatively associated with wildfire severity, and three families and six genera were significantly positively associated with wildfire severity. Many of these taxa contain species that are known to be critical contributors to maintaining global nitrogen cycles. NosZ and NirS nitrifying genes had significantly lower transcription rates in high-severity samples compared with control and low/moderate-severity samples. Collectively, these results suggest that high-severity wildfires significantly negatively alter the community structures and functions of nitrogen-cycling bacteria, which may have significant ramifications for ecosystem recovery in postwildfire landscapes. Significant differences were found for some of the compounds and these compounds were used in order to characterize and differentiate among the clones. Objective: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of antioxidant polyphenol-rich pomegranate juice (PJ) supplementation for 5 weeks on patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), since the oxidative stress plays a major role in the evolution and pathophysiology of COPD. Design: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Subjects: A total of 30 patients with stable COPD were randomly distributed in two groups (15 patients each). Interventions: Both groups consumed either 400 ml PJ daily or matched placebo (synthetic orange-flavoured drink) for 5 weeks. Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) of PJ, blood parameters (14 haematological and 18 serobiochemical), respiratory function variables, bioavailability of PJ polyphenols (plasma and urine) and urinary isoprostane (8-iso-PGF[sub.2[alpha] ]) were evaluated. Results: The daily dose of PJ (containing 2.66 g polyphenols) provided 4 mmol/l TEAC. None of the polyphenols present in PJ were detected in plasma or in urine of volunteers. The most abundant PJ polyphenols, ellagitannins, were metabolized by the colonic microflora of COPD patients to yield two major metabolites in both plasma and urine (dibenzopyranone derivatives) with no TEAC. No differences were found (P [greater than] 0.05) between PJ and placebo groups for any of the parameters evaluated (serobiochemical and haematological), urinary 8-iso-PGF[sub.2[alpha] ], respiratory function variables and clinical symptoms of COPD patients. Conclusions: Our results suggest that PJ supplementation adds no benefit to the current standard therapy in patients with stable COPD. The high TEAC of PJ cannot be extrapolated in vivo probably due to the metabolism of its polyphenols by the colonic microflora. The understanding of the different bioavailability of dietary polyphenols is critical before claiming any antioxidant-related health benefit. Background: The aim of this study was to develop a spending predictor model to evaluate the direct costs associated with the management of ABSSSIs from the National health-care provider's perspective of Italy, Romania, and Spain. Methodology: A decision-analytic model was developed to evaluate the diagnostic and clinical pathways of hospitalized ABSSSI patients based on scientific guidelines and real-world data. A Standard of Care (SoC) scenario was compared with a dalbavancin scenario in which the patients could be discharged early. The epidemiological and cost parameters were extrapolated from national administrative databases (i.e., hospital information system). A probabilistic sensitivity analysis (PSA) and one-way sensitivity analysis (OWA) were performed. Results: Overall, the model estimated an average annual number of patients with ABSSSIs of approximately 50,000 in Italy, Spain, and Romania. On average, the introduction of dalbavancin reduced the length of stay by 3.3 days per ABSSSI patient. From an economic perspective, dalbavancin did not incur any additional cost from the National Healthcare perspective, and the results were consistent among the countries. The PSA and OWA demonstrated the robustness of these results. Conclusion: This model represents a useful tool for policymakers by providing information regarding the economic and organizational consequences of an early discharge approach in ABSSSI management. We report measurements and theoretical analysis of resonant spin tunneling in randomly oriented nanospheres of a molecular magnet. Amorphous nanospheres of Mn12 acetate have been fabricated and characterized by chemical, infrared, TEM, x-ray, and magnetic methods. Magnetic measurements have revealed sharp tunneling peaks in the field derivative of the magnetization that occur at the typical resonant field values for the Mn12 acetate crystal in the field parallel to the easy axis. Theoretical analysis is provided that explains these observations. We argue that resonant spin tunneling in a molecular magnet can be established in a powder sample, without the need for a single crystal and without aligning the easy magnetization axes of the molecules. This is confirmed by reanalyzing the old data on a powdered sample of nonoriented micron-size crystals of Mn12 acetate. Objectives: To review and describe alternative strategies for the supply of vaccines in Latin America., Methods: We conducted a narrative review to explore and describe alternatives for equitable vaccine access in Latin America. We searched and considered the main access strategies reported in the literature through PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Additionally, we reviewed the web sites of key stakeholders. The search was conducted using the following keywords: ("access" or "availability" or "acquisition" or "affordability" or "tiered pricing") and ("vaccine"). Subsequently, documents that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Finally, findings were grouped by means of a thematic analysis and an interpretative synthesis., Results: Twenty-four publications were included. We identified 5 main topics: current supply strategies, challenges for the acquisition of vaccines, vaccine prices equity, alternative supply strategies, and the advantages and impact of a tiered pricing strategy., Conclusions: Our review suggests that tiered pricing can be an tool for accelerating the process of introducing vaccines in low-income countries at affordable prices and for countries that do not adhere to the current procurement mechanisms or are not eligible for Vaccine Alliance because giving countries prices for vaccines that reflect their ability to pay can result in better programmatic and financial planning for the purchase of these vaccines, and in return, vaccine manufacturers can gain access to wider markets However, this model has not been z improve access to vaccines that are aimed only at developing countries, mainly because the market in these countries is not profitable for producers., Competing Interests: Author Disclosures Author disclosure forms can be accessed below in the Supplemental Material section., (Copyright © 2024 International Society for Health Economics and Outcomes Research.
