In this article, CNTs have been used in concrete, and the resulting properties are evaluated. Also, the CNT-reinforced concrete was exposed to elevated temperature, and the corresponding change in mechanical performance was investigated. Mechanical properties were studied, such as compressive and flexural strengths, stress-strain response, elastic modulus, compressive toughness, mass loss, and deterioration caused by exposure to elevated temperatures. Concrete specimens were heated to 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C at a heating rate of 5 °C/min and then tested for residual properties. CNT-reinforced concrete showed a higher compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and compressive toughness than the control specimens. 0.15-CNT reinforced samples showed an increase of nearly 33% in Compressive strength and 50% in flexural strength. From the visual inspection, CNT-reinforced specimens showed less cracking at higher temperatures. Moreover, the effect of plastering concrete with CNTs was studied, which depicted better strength retention on exposure to fire. At 600 °C, 0.3 P-CNT plaster samples retained up to 43% of compressive strength and 46% of flexural strength, whereas control samples only retained up to 29% and 34% of their original strengths, respectively. Concrete-filled double-skin tubular beams consist of two tubes, placed eccentrically or concentrically, with the hollow space between the two tubes filled with concrete. This type of construction can thus combine the properties of steel and concrete to provide the advantage of increased strength, ductility, stiffness and economy of the section. This paper reports on a study into the flexural properties of beams made of square hollow section steel for the both inner and outer tube, connected with steel strips. In total, 12 specimens were tested under monotonic and cyclic loading. The effects of the concrete infill, the eccentricity of the inner tube, the provision of minimum steel reinforcement and slip control due to the attachment of steel strips at the end of the beams were studied. Beams with an eccentric inner tube showed better flexural response and were also more economical due to the reduced concrete volume; their load-carrying capacity under cyclic loading was less than that under monotonic loading. Compared with beams without longitudinal reinforcement, the beams with longitudinal reinforcement showed improved flexural strength when subjected to cyclic loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unreinforced masonry structures are vulnerable to seismic loading due to their brittle behavior, and must therefore be strengthened. This paper presents the seismic performance of brick masonry strengthened with steel and plastic meshes. For this purpose, twenty masonry wallets of (600 × 600 × 113 mm) were constructed, keeping the same materials and workmanship. Fifteen of them were reinforced using steel and plastic meshes. These specimens were tested for in-plane static cyclic diagonal tension (shear) behavior. The critical parameters, such as shear stress, strain, failure modes, ductility, energy dissipation, and stiffness degradation were investigated. Compared to reference and plastic-reinforced specimens, the steel-reinforced samples were found to be highly effective. Furthermore, the recommended category of steel increased the shear capacity, energy dissipation, and ductility ratio by 1.3, 14, and 6.3 times, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports the theoretical findings of the new modified type of tuned liquid column ball damper (TLCBD), called a tuned liquid column ball spring damper (TLCBSD). In this new modified form, the ball inside the horizontal section of the damper is attached to the spring. Furthermore, two types of this modified version are proposed, known as a tuned liquid column ball spring sliding damper (TLCBSSD) and a tuned liquid column ball spring rolling damper (TLCBSRD). In the former, the rotational motion of the ball attached to the spring is restricted, whereas in the latter, the ball attached to the spring can translate as well as rotate. Mathematical models and optimum design parameters are formulated for both types. The performance of these new modified damper versions is assessed numerically and subjected to harmonic, seismic, and impulse loadings. The results show that the performance of the newly proposed dampers is relatively better than traditional TLCBDs in harmonic and seismic excitations. The peak response reduction soon after the impact load becomes zero is comparatively better in TLCBSDs over TLCBDs. Fixed base structures subjected to earthquake forces are prone to various issues, such as the attraction of greater forces to structure, amplified accelerations to non-structural components, expensive design for better seismic performance, and so forth. Base isolation applied at the foundation of vulnerable structures is a radical bypass from the conventional approaches utilized by structural engineers. However, the practical implementation of passive base isolation is constrained by factors such as large displacements at isolation level, uplifting forces at isolators, and vulnerability to unpredictable and versatile earthquakes. This study is focused on the evaluation of the smart base isolation system under various harmonic and earthquake loadings. The proposed system employs a magnetorheological elastomer (MRE)—a class of smart materials, based on an adaptive isolation layer under the building structure for its vibration control. The building is idealized as a five-degree-of-freedom (DOF) structure with the mass lumped at each storey. The stiffness of the MRE isolation layer is adjusted using the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) optimal feedback control algorithm. A total of 18 simulations have been performed for the fixed base, passively isolated, and MRE-based isolated structures under a series of earthquake loadings of both a near-fault and far-fault nature for analyzing a total of 306 responses of the structures. The simulation results indicate that MRE-based isolation has significantly reduced all the responses compared to the passively isolated structure for both the near-fault and far-fault earthquake loadings. For harmonic loading, however, the passively isolated structure outperformed the MRE isolated structure in terms of storey drift and acceleration responses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuned liquid column ball damper (TLCBD) is a passive control device used for controlling the building vibrations induced from wind or earthquakes. TLCBD is a modified form of conventional tuned liquid column damper (TLCD). This paper studies the effect of TLCBD on the four-storey steel frame structure. The performance of the TLCBD is also compared with conventional TLCD. The analytical model of both TLCD and TLCBD is presented here. The effectiveness of these analytical models is examined experimentally by series of shaking table tests under different excitation levels including harmonic loadings and seismic excitations. In TLCBD, the vibration is reduced significantly as compared to TLCD by using steel ball as a moving orifice. The difference in diameter of steel ball and tube, containing the liquid column, acts as an orifice which moves with the movement of the ball. This moving orifice phenomenon enhanced the vibration reduction effect by resisting the water motion in the TLCBD. Root mean square (RMS) and peak values of acceleration were calculated for each loading and each storey of uncontrolled and controlled structures. Comparison of the time histories of controlled and uncontrolled structures for different loadings is also reported. Results indicate that the TLCBD is more effective in the earthquake scenarios as compared to the harmonic excitations. Thick population density and its escalation propensity in seismically active regions of Pakistan has raised sincere concerns about the performance of building stock whose suboptimal performance and complete collapses led to a colossal number of casualties during the past earthquakes. The current research is inspired by the Kashmir earthquake of 2005 which consumed more than 80,000 lives, out of which, approximately 19,000 were children due to wide spread collapse of school buildings. A new database for existing reinforced concrete (RC) school buildings in seismic zone 4 of Pakistan has been developed using the surveyed information and presented briefly. The paper presents the statistics of the data collected through field surveys and professional interviews. It was found that the infrastructural authorities in the considered region developed some specific designs for school buildings, with varying architectural and structural configurations, which were eventually replicated throughout the area. In the current study, almost 2500 schools were surveyed for identifying versatile architectural and structural configurations, and subsequently, 19 different types had been identified, which were eventually used as representative stock for the schools in seismic zone 4 of Pakistan, Muzaffarabad district. The results of the study yield the brief of the collected data from the field and a consolidated methodology for establishing the analytical fragility relationships for one of the 19 structural configurations of the school buildings. A sample building from the collected data has been selected by considering the maximum number of students, and afterwards, the vulnerability is assessed by employing incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) which constitutes the presented methodology. Finally, the fragility curves are developed and presented for the said building type. The derived analytical fragility curves for the considered building type indicate its structural vulnerability and as a whole represent its satisfactory behavior. The vulnerability assessment process and the fragility development are described in an easy manner so that the domestic practicing engineers can readily become able to extend the application towards other school buildings in the region. The developed relationships can be employed for rational decision making so that essential disaster preparedness can be carried out by identifying any need for structural strengthening and interventions. Recently, the addition of natural fibers to high strength concrete (HSC) has been of great interest in the field of construction materials. Compared to artificial fibers, natural fibers are cheap and locally available. Among all natural fibers, coconut fibers have the greatest known toughness. In this work, the mechanical properties of coconut fiber reinforced high strength concrete (CFR-HSC) are explored. Silica fume (10% by mass) and super plasticizer (1% by mass) are also added to the CFR-HSC. The influence of 25 mm-, 50 mm-, and 75 mm-long coconut fibers and 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% contents by mass is investigated. The microstructure of CFR-HSC is studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results revealed that CFR-HSC has improved compressive, splitting-tensile, and flexural strengths, and energy absorption and toughness indices compared to HSC. The overall best results are obtained for the CFR-HSC having 50 mm long coconut fibers with 1.5% content by cement mass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
