Biofouling constitutes one of the main obstacles in the sector of shellfish farming. Under this perspective, it is of highly importance to critically combine the updated information regarding the invasive potential of ascidian species, together with the factors contributing toward these events. The biological features of each species in relation to the gathering of the main non-indigenous species in the Mediterranean basin represent the first step toward mitigation of negative effects of the phenomenon. Further, there are limited studies investigating the physiological changes of bivalves caused by biofouling while leading to an increase in stress biomarkers. In the present review, the major ascidian species negatively affecting bivalve culture in the Mediterranean Sea are presented, alongside monitoring of ascidians from four Greek mussel farming locations as typical mussel culture cases. Among the main ascidian species, Styela plicata, Clavelina oblonga, Ciona robusta, Aplidium sp., Didemnum sp., Botryllus schlosseri, and Didemnum drachi are included, with the last three being the most harmful for this aquaculture sector. Based on the existing literature and research conducted so far, future research directions are proposed, in an effort to effectively control or efficiently manage ascidian biofouling organisms. Overall, perspectives toward the way we manage the biofouling phenomenon, such as the use of ascidian’s by-products in feedstuffs, chemical and pharmaceutical industry, or their incorporation in bivalve co-culture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture systems represent promising alternative approaches.

Marine bivalves are exposed to several environmental stressors depending on fluctuations in abiotic factors (pollutants, salinity, and temperature) and biotic factors, including ascidian biofouling. Increased seawater temperature may lead to oxidative stress in marine animals, whereas the additional burden presented by ascidian biofouling narrows their thermal window and can cause a sharper decline in shellfish health, with subsequent effects on shellfish aquaculture. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of seawater temperature variations in the severity of the stress caused by ascidian biofouling to Mytilus galloprovincialis cell machinery, particularly in the antioxidant defense system, and the apoptotic and autophagic pathways. Fouled and nonfouled mussels were seasonally collected, and several key indicators of the previously mentioned cellular processes were determined in their mantle and posterior adductor muscle tissues. Results indicate that ascidian biofouling increases hypoxic conditions and oxidative stress, subsequently triggering cell death pathways in mussels. Although the stress caused by ascidians may be the consequence of both reduced feeding and oxygen consumption, it affects the mussels to a greater extent than seasonality. The induced stress by biofouling, along with elevated water temperatures in summer, may severely harm mussel physiology and fitness, adversely affecting aquaculture sustainability. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to identify the contribution of nutrition, physical activity (PA), and total energy intake and expenditure on body weight and composition in adolescents. Methods: Body composition, PA, and dietary intakes from 904 Greek adolescents (446 boys and 458 girls; Age: 14.6 ± 1.5 yrs), were evaluated. All participants were assigned into three groups according to their age-sex adjusted Fat Mass Index: (A) Normal weight (N; N = 503), (B) Overweight (OW; N = 253), and (C) Obese (O; N = 148). Results: Significant differences were found for body weight and composition, basal metabolic rate (BMR) expressed per kg of body mass (normal weight children exhibited the highest values), physical-total energy expenditure, and energy balances between the groups ([eta] [superscript 2]: 0.138 to 0.657; p < 0.05). In contrast, no differences were found for macronutrients' and total energy intakes, food consumption and quality ([eta] [superscript 2]: 0.002 to 0.099; p > 0.05) between the three examined groups. Strong, negative correlations were observed between body weight, body fat percentage, PA, and total energy expenditure (r: -0.311 to -0.810; p < 0.001). Lower, negative correlations were found between body weight, body fat percentage, and macronutrients' daily intakes (r:-0.235 to -0.432; p < 0.05). BMR and total energy expenditure had strong, negative relative strengths for the determination of body weight and fat percentage. Conclusions: In conclusion, it seems that BMR, PA, and total daily energy expenditure expressed per body weight and not the nutritional and total energy intakes, were the primary determinant parameters of body composition and weight in adolescents.

Simple Summary: Research efforts over the past decade have uncovered new insights into functions of erythropoietin that point to new roles beyond erythropoiesis. Recent studies have demonstrated that erythropoietin is implicated in tissue protection, regeneration, and reproduction. In this context, the present study reveals for the first time that erythropoietin inhibits cell death by apoptosis and enhances the fertilizing capacity of bovine spermatozoa. Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone secreted mainly by the kidney, exerts its biological function by binding to its cell-surface receptor (EpoR). The presence of EPO and EpoR in the male and female reproductive system has been verified. Therefore, some of the key properties of EPO, such as its antioxidant and antiapoptotic effects, could improve the fertilizing capacity of spermatozoa. In the present study, the effect of two different concentrations of EPO (10 mIU/μL and 100 mIU/μL) on bovine sperm-quality parameters was evaluated during a post-thawing 4-h incubation at 37 °C. EPO had a positive effect on sperm motility, viability, and total antioxidant capacity. Moreover, EPO inhibited apoptosis, as it reduced both BCL2-associated X apoptosis regulator (Bax)/B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) ratio and cleaved cysteine-aspartic proteases (caspases) substrate levels in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, EPO induced sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction in spermatozoa incubated in capacitation conditioned medeia. These results establish a foundation for the physiological role of EPO in reproductive processes and hopefully will provide an incentive for further research in order to fully decipher the role of EPO in sperm physiology and reproduction. This randomized, double-blinded, experimental study investigated the effects of a four-week daily pre-workout supplementation (200 mg caffeine, 3.3 g creatine monohydrate, 3.2 g β-alanine, 6 g citrulline malate, and 5 g BCAA) vs. placebo (isocaloric maltodextrin) on anaerobic (jumping, sprinting, agility, and the running-based anaerobic sprint test: RAST) and aerobic (Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1) performance, as well as on body composition and selective muscle damage/health-related blood markers in well-trained basketball players during the in-season period. Eighteen basketball players (age: 24.4 ± 6.3 years, height: 185.7 ± 8.0 cm, weight: 85.7 ± 12.8 kg, body fat: 16.5 ± 4.2%) were randomly assigned into two groups: pre-workout supplement (PWS, n = 10) or placebo (PL, n = 8). PWS consumption increased aerobic performance (PWS: 8 ± 6%; PL: −2 ± 6%; p = 0.004) compared to PL. A significant decrease was observed in peak (F = 7.0; p = 0.017), average (F = 10.7; p = 0.005), and minimum power (F = 5.1; p = 0.039) following 4 weeks of supplementation in both groups. No other significant changes were observed between groups (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the consumption of the current PWS over a four-week period appears to positively influence the aerobic performance of well-trained basketball players during the in-season period. However, it does not appear to mitigate the observed decline in anaerobic power, nor does it affect performance in jumping, sprinting, and agility, or alter body composition or selective muscle damage/health-related blood markers. In the context of evaluating the impact of environmentally friendly and sustainably produced alternative protein sources in fish feed, the present study's aim was to examine the overall physiological stress response in one of the main fish species of European freshwater aquaculture, Oncorhynchus mykiss (rainbow trout), following the partial substitution of fish meal (FM) with a Tenebrio molitor (TM) (yellow mealworm) full‐fat meal. In total, 222 rainbow trout individuals (115.2 ± 14.2 g) were allocated randomly into six tanks, three per dietary treatment, and were fed a formulated diet containing 60% yellow mealworm (TM60) compared to a control diet without insect meal (TM0). Both diets contained equal amounts of crude protein, dry matter and, lipid content, while the FM in TM60 was 100 g kg−1 corresponding to the one seventh of the TM0. Heat shock response (HSR), MAPK signalling, cell death pathways (apoptosis and autophagy), antioxidant defence mechanisms, and intermediate metabolism were evaluated. In general, HSR and MAPK signalling were activated in response to the inclusion of T. molitor. Moreover, triggering of apoptotic and autophagic processes and the onset of antioxidant defence mechanisms underlined the existence of physiological stress. Despite the apparent dietary‐induced stress, rainbow trout in the present study exhibited no mortality and no significant effects regarding growth performance parameters. Specifically, TM60 dietary inclusion resulted in no changes in final body weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate. However, feed intake depicted a statistically significant decrease in TM60 fish compared to TM0 individuals. Nevertheless, nutrient stress should be considered a limiting factor regarding the utilization of T. molitor in O. mykiss diet due to the associated risks for health and welfare. Ascidian biofouling generates significant challenges to bivalve aquaculture. Their rapid spread across almost every available surface leads to increased maintenance costs and reduced yields in shellfish farming. In addition, ascidians may introduce pathogens or toxins, further compromising the health and marketability of bivalve stocks and thereby necessitating strict management strategies to manage these impacts. The aim of this study was the evaluation of different management practices for eliminating ascidian fouling and the identification of the best method for Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819) aquaculture farms. The effects of different anti-fouling treatments as well as their interactive outcomes were examined by conducting two experiments. Various experimental procedures were applied, including the temporally differential washing of mussels, air exposure and immersion in 50 ppt and 70 ppt salinity solutions, as well as the combination of these applications. All treatments reduced the number of ascidian colonies on mussel socks but at varying proportions. The hatchery culture of bivalve mollusks depends on feeding with fresh microalgae which represent up to 50% of the production costs. We investigated the growth performance of juvenile Ostrea edulis and Ruditapes decussatus under 15% and 30% replacement of microalgae with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Metabolic indices were measured along with weight-specific growth rate and condition index for 28 days. 15% substitution led to great results, whereas 30% yeast-fed treatments displayed poor growth and a depressed metabolism. Simple Summary: Nutrition is one of the most important physiological processes for the growth and welfare of farmed animals, while interactions between the intestinal microflora and the host systems provide a key mechanism for enhancing and maintaining homeostasis. Probiotics exert a positive impact on organisms' growth and immune response, so the administration of rations enriched with probiotics is recommended. Although the physiological role of probiotics on vertebrates' growth and stress responses has been extensively studied in vertebrates, little is known regarding their effects on economically important invertebrates such as land snails. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of probiotic-enriched rations on the physiological responses in several tissues of the economically important farmed terrestrial snail, Cornu aspersum. Despite the absence of a direct effect on growth rate, an intense physiological response by various biomarkers was observed in all examined tissues. A large variety of microorganisms ingested with food constitute animals' intestinal microflora, enhancing and maintaining the homeostasis of the host. Rations enriched with probiotics are a method recommended to prevent undesirable conditions. To date, research has been limited to farmed animals and reared fish, creating a knowledge gap concerning the effect of probiotics on the growth rate, physiological responses, and energy metabolism of invertebrates such as the land snail Cornu aspersum. Herein, juvenile snails (26.23 ± 0.5 mm shell diameter and 8.23 ± 1.02 g body weight) were fed L. plantarum probiotic-enriched rations in two different proportions (1.25 mg and 2.5 mg), and their growth rate was monitored for three months. Additionally, the RNA/DNA and Bax/Bcl-2 ratios, HSP gene expression and protein levels, and ND2 expression, were measured in the hepatopancreas, digestive tract, and mantle. Although the snails' growth rate was not affected, the RNA/DNA ratio presented an increase in various tissues, indicating an intense physiological response. Also, probiotic administration demonstrated low levels of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. HSP levels were higher in the presence of probiotics, probably signaling an attempt by the animal to face potentially stressful situations. Introduction: Temperature affects organisms' metabolism and ecological performance. Owing to climate change, sea warming constituting a severe source of environmental stress for marine organisms, since it increases at alarming rates. Rapid warming can exceed resilience of marine organisms leading to fitness loss and mortality. However, organisms can improve their thermal tolerance when briefly exposed to sublethal thermal stress (heat hardening), thus generating heat tolerant phenotypes. Methods:Weinvestigated the "stress memory" effect caused by heat hardening on M. galloprovincialis metabolite profile of in order to identify the underlying biochemical mechanisms, which enhance mussels' thermal tolerance. Results: The heat hardening led to accumulation of amino acids (e.g., leucine, isoleucine and valine), including osmolytes and cytoprotective agents with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can contribute to thermal protection of the mussels. Moreover, proteolysis was inhibited and protein turnover regulated by the heat hardening. Heat stress alters the metabolic profile of heat stressed mussels, benefiting the heat-hardened individuals in increasing their heat tolerance compared to the non-heat-hardened ones. Discussion: These findings provide new insights in the metabolic mechanisms that may reinforce mussels' tolerance against thermal stress providing both natural protection and potential manipulative tools (e.g., in aquaculture) against the devastating climate change effects on marine organisms. Simple Summary: Nowadays, aquaculture is the main source of fish for consumers, and its demand is constantly increasing. The diet of these fish requires protein for their growth, which is traditionally obtained from natural fish stocks. In recent years, efforts have been made to replace these feed ingredients with insect-derived meals, but it is necessary to investigate their impact on the growth and health status of the fish. In this study, two insect meals of Tenebrio molitor larvae reared in conventional substrates or substrates enriched with medicinal/aromatic plants (MAPs) were supplemented (10%) as fish meal replacements in the diets of gilthead seabream. After 12 weeks of experimental feeding, hematological and biochemical tests were conducted, revealing specific modulations in white blood cell and blood signal transduction patterns in the fish subjected to each experimental diet in relation to the new feed ingredients. This work assesses the dietary use of two insect meals of Tenebrio molitor (TM) larvae reared in conventional (TM-10) or MAP-enriched substrates (MAP-TM-10) as fish meal replacements (10%) in the diets of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Fish (n = 4500; 207.19 ± 1.47 g) were divided into three groups with triplicates: control (fed conventional diet), TM-10, and MAP-TM-10 groups. The fish were reared in floating cages for 12 weeks and the dietary effects on white blood cell activation, heat shock proteins, MAPKs, and apoptosis of the fish were evaluated. The MAP-TM-10 group exhibited the highest eosinophilic induction. Phosphorylated levels of p38 MAPK, p44/42 MAPK, HSP70, and HSP90 increased in the TM-10 and MAP-TM-10 groups. In terms of apoptosis, Bax levels were lower in the TM groups compared to the control, and the MAP-TM-10 group showed even lower levels than the TM-10 group. Bcl-2 levels increased in the TM-10 group compared to the control, and further increased in the MAP-TM-10 group. The Bax/Bcl-2 ratio, an apoptosis indicator, decreased in the TM groups, with the MAP-TM-10 group showing a further decrease compared to TM-10. Background: The effects of climate change negatively affect marine bivalves' health. Lately, the intensity of marine heatwaves poses serious threats to the aquatic environment setting of high-risk bivalve farming. Since temperature increases can jeopardize bivalves' immunity response, pathogen infection becomes more evident. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, increased during the process of phagocytosis, is confronted by the animals' antioxidant defense system. However, apart from pathogenic infections, antioxidant defense responses are also induced by seawater temperature increases; Methods: To enlighten the antioxidant status of Mytilus galloprovincialis originating from mortality events enhanced by intense heatwaves in Thermaikos Gulf, northern Greece, along with Marteilia refringens infection, we examined the expression of genes related to antioxidant defense (catalase, CuSOD and mt10) along with the lipid peroxidation levels and activity levels of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, SOD and glutathione reductase); Results: Our results exhibited increased levels of all these biomarkers. This increase was intensified in the Marteilia infected individuals; Conclusions: Our findings shed light on the oxidative and antioxidant status of farmed mussels led to mortality in the context of Marteilia infection. Simple Summary: Optimization of metamorphosis, a key stage in development where fish undergo several morphological and physiological changes, may assure the efficient mass production of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) juveniles. Application of probiotics as feed and/or water additive benefits nutrient utilization through modulation of the digestive enzymes. Therefore, following the addition of biofilters with the probiotic Phaeobacter inhibens in the rearing water throughout the early development of greater amberjack, crucial in metamorphosis, cellular pathways were investigated. The probiotic treatment increased the growth of greater amberjack, while hypertrophy was the main growth process in the metamorphosis. Additionally, the rearrangement of structures and tissues may have been facilitated through the observed induced cell death. The present findings are of great importance and may be applied in the aquaculture industry in order to enhance greater amberjack development and growth. Metamorphosis entails hormonally regulated morphological and physiological changes requiring high energy levels. Probiotics as feed supplements generate ameliorative effects on host nutrient digestion and absorption. Thereby, the aim of the present research was to investigate the impact of the probiotic Phaeobacter inhibens as a water additive on cellular signaling pathways in the metamorphosis of greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili). Activation of insulin-like growth factor type 1 receptor (IGF-1R), protein kinase B (Akt), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), induction of heat shock proteins (Hsps), and programmed cell death were assessed through SDS-Page/immunoblot analysis, while energy metabolism was determined through enzymatic activities. According to the results, greater amberjack reared in P. inhibens-enriched water entered the metamorphic phase with greater body length, while protein synthesis was triggered to facilitate the hypertrophic growth as indicated by IGF-1/Akt activation and AMPK inhibition. Contrarily, MAPKs levels were reduced, whereas variations in Hsps response were evident in the probiotic treatment. Apoptosis and autophagy were mobilized potentially for the structural remodeling processes. Furthermore, the elevated enzymatic activities of intermediary metabolism highlighted the excess energy demands of metamorphosis. Collectively, the present findings demonstrate that P. inhibens may reinforce nutrient utilization, thus leading greater amberjack to an advanced growth and developmental state. Mediterranean finfish aquaculture is mainly represented by the production of the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) growing in marine cage farms. Despite the numerous benefits of fish farming, the ecological risk potentially caused by fish escapes to the wild populations is occasionally high. In the current study, an integrated review of fish escapes is presented regarding S. aurata and D. labrax escapes and their potential effect on the genetic composition of wild populations. The collected data from the literature are combined and discussed along with recorded escapes in a fish farm located in the Aegean Sea, Greece. According to these records, fish escapes present a generally stable rate, ranging between 0 and 2% in each escape event, which occur 5–8 times per year. Although for other farmed fish species worldwide, the ecological risk may be higher, this risk is probably lower in Mediterranean finfish populations, which are characterized by generally low levels of genetic differentiation. Nevertheless, the risk of genetic introgression still exists. Particularly in sea bream and sea bass farming, genetic structure and differentiation in wild populations seem to be unaffected for now. Nevertheless, suitable management measurements would be a useful strategy to avoid future negative effects of fish escapes. These strategies should be focused on further efforts towards recapture program development, reduced escapees' survival, and proper legislation. Furthermore, more data on escapees' survival percentage, their migration pathways, and the way these pathways relate to mortality, the type of escape event, and the season of release would be also valuable. A pre-workout supplement's (PWS; 200 mg caffeine, 3.3 g creatine monohydrate, 3.2 g β-alanine, 6 g citrulline malate and 5 g branched chained amino acid (BCAA) per dose) acute effects on the alactic (jumping, sprinting, agility), lactic (Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test, RAST) and aerobic performance (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1, Yo-Yo IRL1 VO2max) of well-trained basketball players was investigated in this double-blind placebo-controlled study. Thirty players (age 18–31 years, height 166–195 cm, weight 70.2–116.7 kg, body fat 10.6–26.4%) were allocated to pre-workout (PWS, n = 15) or placebo (PL, n = 15) groups. Half of the participants in each group performed the evaluations without PWS or PL, while the rest consumed PWS or PL 30 min before the assessments (1st trial) and vice versa (2nd trial). Significant improvements in counter-movement jump (CMJ) (PWS: 4.3 ± 2.1%; PL: 1.2 ± 1.0%), agility (PWS: −2.9 ± 1.8%; PL: 1.8 ± 1.7%), RAST average (PWS: 18.3 ± 9.1%; PL: −2.2 ± 2.0%), minimum power (PWS: 13.7 ± 8.9%; PL: −7.5 ± 5.9%), and fatigue index (PWS: −25.0 ± 0.9%; PL: −4.6 ± 0.6%) were observed in the PWS group vs. the PL group (p < 0.05). No differences were found regarding sprinting, aerobic performance, and blood lactate concentrations. Aquaculture is affected by numerous factors that may cause various health threats that have to be controlled by the most environmentally friendly approaches. In this context, prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics are frequently incorporated into organisms' feeding rations to ameliorate the health status of the host's intestine, enhancing its functionality and physiological performance, and to confront increasing antimicrobial resistance. The first step in this direction is the understanding of the complex microbiome system of the organism in order to administer the optimal supplement, in the best concentration, and in the correct way. In the present review, pre-, pro-, and synbiotics as aquaculture additives, together with the factors affecting gut microbiome in crayfish, are discussed, combined with their future prospective outcomes. Probiotics constitute non-pathogenic bacteria, mainly focused on organisms' energy production and efficient immune response; prebiotics constitute fiber indigestible by the host organism, which promote the preferred gastrointestinal tract microorganisms' growth and activity towards the optimum balance between the gastrointestinal and immune system's microbiota; whereas synbiotics constitute their combination as a blend. Among pro-, pre-, and synbiotics' multiple benefits are boosted immunity, increased resistance towards pathogens, and overall welfare promotion. Furthermore, we reviewed the intestinal microbiota abundance and composition, which are found to be influenced by a plethora of factors, including the organism's developmental stage, infection by pathogens, diet, environmental conditions, culture methods, and exposure to toxins. Intestinal microbial communities in crayfish exhibit high plasticity, with infections leading to reduced diversity and abundance. The addition of synbiotic supplementation seems to provide better results than probiotics and prebiotics separately; however, there are still conflicting results regarding the optimal concentration. Mortalities of Pinna nobilis populations set at risk the survival of the species from many Mediterranean coastline habitats. In many cases, both Haplosporidium pinnae and Mycobacterium spp. are implicated in mass mortalities of P. nobilis populations, leading the species into extinction. In the context of the importance of these pathogens' role in P. nobilis mortalities, the present study investigated two Greek populations of the species hosting different microbial loads (one only H. pinnae and the second both pathogens) by the means of pathophysiological markers. More specifically, the populations from Kalloni Gulf (Lesvos Island) and from Maliakos Gulf (Fthiotis), seasonally sampled, were chosen based on the host pathogens in order to investigate physiological and immunological biomarkers to assess those pathogens' roles. In order to determine if the haplosporidian parasite possesses a major role in the mortalities or if both pathogens are involved in these phenomena, a variety of biomarkers, including apoptosis, autophagy, inflammation and heat shock response were applied. The results indicated a decreased physiological performance of individuals hosting both pathogens in comparison with those hosting only H. pinnae. Our findings provide evidence for the synergistic role of those pathogens in the mortality events, which is also enhanced by the influence of seasonality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freshwater crayfish are considered as aquatic products of high quality and high nutritional value. The increasing demand has led to populations reduction in several locations throughout their range. Thus, the development of appropriate rearing conditions is considered necessary, among which, optimization of their diet is a basic part. Towards this direction, in the present study, a 98-day feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the impact of dietary fishmeal substitution by Hermetia illucens meal on Pontastacus leptodactylus juveniles kept under laboratory conditions. Insect meals represent an environmentally friendly alternative solution, considered as a high-value feed source, rich in nutrients such as protein and fat. Three dietary regimens were utilized with a fishmeal-based without Hermetia meal (HM) defined as the control diet (HM0), and two diets, the first with 50% (HM50) and the second with 100% (HM100) of fishmeal substitution by HM, respectively. Growth performance, whole-body composition, and fatty acid profiles of individuals were studied in the different treatments. At the end of the feeding trial, statistically significant differences were observed in the mean survival rate (SR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and weight gain (WG) values. More specifically, animals fed with HM-based diets had higher mean SR, while the control group performed better regarding FCR and SGR. The HM inclusion in the diet significantly altered the whole-body chemical composition of the crayfish signifying a different metabolic utilization compared to fishmeal (FM). The fatty acid analysis revealed that 16:0 (palmitic acid) was the predominant saturated fatty acid (SFA), 18:1ω9 (oleic acid) was found to be the main monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), while 18:2ω6 (linoleic acid) represented the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) followed by C20:3 cis ω3 (cis-11-14-17- eicosatrienoate) and C22:6 cis ω3 (cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-Docosahexaenoic) fatty acids. The inclusion of dietary HM significantly reduced the contents of ∑SFAs, ∑PUFAs and ∑ω6 fatty acids, as well as those of C22:6 cis ω3 and increased the ω6/ ω3 and hypocholesterolemic to hypercholesterolemic ratios in the body. In parallel with improvements in balanced diets and in culture conditions that need to be optimised for rearing of freshwater crayfish, our study provides new data that enlighten the suitability of insect meals in the nutrition of P. leptodactylus. In biofouling communities, ascidians are among the most damaging species, presenting severe threats, such as depressed growth rates and decreased chances of lower survival, to shellfish aquaculture. However, little is known concerning the fouled shellfish physiology. In an effort to obtain information for the magnitude of stress caused by ascidians to farmed Mytilus galloprovincialis, five seasonal samplings took place in a mussel aquaculture farm suffering from ascidian biofoulants, in Vistonicos Bay, Greece. The dominant ascidian species were recorded and several stress biomarkers, including Hsp gene expression at both mRNA and protein levels, as well as MAPKs levels, and enzymatic activities of intermediate metabolism were examined. Almost all investigated biomarkers revealed elevated stress levels in fouled mussels compared to non-fouled. This enhanced physiological stress seems to be season-independent and can be attributed to the oxidative stress and/or feed deprivation caused by ascidian biofouling, thus illuminating the biological impact of this phenomenon. The massive accumulation of plastics over the decades in the aquatic environment has led to the dispersion of plastic components in aquatic ecosystems, invading the food webs. Plastics fragmented into microplastics can be bioaccumulated by fishes via different exposure routes, causing several adverse effects. In the present study, the dose-dependent cytotoxicity of 8–10 μm polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs), at concentrations of 1 mg/g (low dose) and 10 mg/g dry food (high dose), was evaluated in the liver and gill tissues of two fish species, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) and the freshwater perch (Perca fluviatilis). According to our results, the inclusion of PP-MPs in the feed of D. rerio and P. fluviatilis hampered the cellular function of the gills and hepatic cells by lipid peroxidation, DNA damage, protein ubiquitination, apoptosis, autophagy, and changes in metabolite concentration, providing evidence that the toxicity of PP-MPs is dose dependent. With regard to the individual assays tested in the present study, the biggest impact was observed in DNA damage, which exhibited a maximum increase of 18.34-fold in the liver of D. rerio. The sensitivity of the two fish species studied differed, while no clear tissue specificity in both fish species was observed. The metabolome of both tissues was altered in both treatments, while tryptophan and nicotinic acid exhibited the greatest decrease among all metabolites in all treatments in comparison to the control. The battery of biomarkers used in the present study as well as metabolomic changes could be suggested as early-warning signals for the assessment of the aquatic environment quality against MPs. In addition, our results contribute to the elucidation of the mechanism induced by nanomaterials on tissues of aquatic organisms, since comprehending the magnitude of their impact on aquatic ecosystems is of great importance. Coalescent methods in population genetics aim to detect biodiversity patterns, evolutionary mechanisms, and signatures of historical changes in effective population sizes with respect to the species fidelity. Restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RADseq) was used to evaluate the population dynamics of invertebrate species within the same localities. New sequencing technologies, such as the ones employed by population genetics, could be used to improve the management and sustainability of marine and aquaculture resources. Sea cucumbers (Holothuria tubolosa) showed genetic differentiation patterns favoring limited gene flow between studied areas. Similar results for clams (Venus verrucosa) suggest local adaptation and low-dispersal abilities for sessile organisms. On the contrary, cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) exhibited a panmictic pattern, resulting in a single genetic stock in the area. The larvae settlement duration may be responsible for such interspecies variations. Interspecies demographic modeling revealed different environmental pressures of historical events' signatures with respect to the three invertebrates. Sea cucumbers favor a post-glacial bottleneck event followed by a more recent recovery, whereas cuttlefish favor an expansion before the late glacial maximum. Lastly, clams showed a constant effective population size in the area. The results of historical demographic changes in natural populations provide opportunities for critical evaluation and management in terms of the conservation of the species in the area. The present study addresses the effects of dietary Tenebrio molitor (TM) larvae meal inclusion on cytoprotective, cell death pathways, antioxidant defence, and intermediate metabolism in the heart, muscle, and digestive tract of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Three experimental diets were formulated to contain 0%, 25%, or 50% inclusion TM levels. Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs) induction was apparent in both species' muscle at 50% inclusion. Conversely, p44/42 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) activation was increased (p < 0.05) in both species' muscle and digestive tract at 25% inclusion. Regarding the apoptotic machinery, TM inclusion exerted no influence on gilthead seabream, while suppression through autophagy may have occurred in the muscle. However, significant apoptosis (p < 0.05) was evident in European sea bass muscle and digestive tract. Both fish species' heart seemed to additionally rely on lipids compared to muscle and digestive tract. In contrast to gilthead seabream, European sea bass exhibited increased (p < 0.05) antioxidant activity at 50% TM inclusion. The present findings highlight the dietary derived induction of cellular responses in a species- and tissue-specific manner, whereas European sea bass appears to be more susceptible to TM inclusion. Systematic, regular high-volume endurance training induces significant metabolic adaptations in glucose and lipids metabolism, which seems to affect the negative impact of unhealthy nutrition, at least in animal models. The present study aimed to investigate the main determinants of body composition, blood glucose and lipids concentrations between middle-aged sedentary individuals (Sed) and well-trained endurance athletes (Run), both following an unhealthy high-fat diet. In thirty-five Sed (Age: 54.0 ± 6.6 yrs, Body Mass: 77.1 ± 10.5 kg, BMI: 31.3 ± 6.0 kg·m−2) and thirty-six Run (Age: 51.6 ± 5.2 yrs, Body Mass: 85.8 ± 3.4 kg, BMI: 23.2 ± 1.8 kg·m−2), body composition, nutritional intake, energy expenditure, resting metabolic rate (RMR), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and blood glucose and lipids concentrations were evaluated. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that body composition, blood glucose and lipids' concentrations in the Run group were primarily determined by the energy expenditure (B: −0.879 to −1.254), while in the Sed group, by their energy intake (B:−0.754 to 0.724). In conclusion, it seems that in well-trained endurance middle-aged athletes, body composition, blood glucose, and lipids concentrations seem to be determined by their training-induced daily energy expenditure and not by their nutritional intake per se. Simple Summary: Climate change effects strongly and negatively influence the health and productivity of marine bivalves and particularly bivalve aquaculture. It is therefore of critical importance to study the physiological response of bivalves against marine heatwaves under field conditions. Thus, in the present study, we evaluated the pathophysiological pathways of the Mediterranean mussel originating from mortality events attributed to extreme seawater temperatures in the context of Marteilia refrigens infection. Our study is focused on the Thermaikos Gulf, the most important mussel cultivation area in Greece, comparing the traditional bouchot-like mussel farming system with the modern long-line system. Heatwaves increased all examined molecular, biochemical and pathophysiological markers in M. galloprovincialis mussels, which were reinforced in Marteilia infected individuals. Therefore, these results enlighten us on the biological impacts of heatwaves, providing valuable information regarding the underlying mechanisms. Thus, insights for the future management of the marine aquatic sector could be provided and subsequently address measures for the decrease or elimination of this phenomenon and restoration of marine production. Marine heatwaves (excessive seawater temperature increases) pose high risk to bivalves' health and farming. The seawater temperature increase is responsible for various pathogen population expansions causing intense stress to marine organisms. Since the majority of knowledge so far derives from laboratory experiments, it is crucial to investigate stress responses in field conditions in order to understand the mechanisms leading to bivalves' mortality events after exposure to temperature extremes. Thus, we evaluated the pathophysiological response of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis originating from mortality events enhanced by intense heatwaves in Thermaikos Gulf, north Greece, along with Marteilia refrigens infection. Mussels that have been exposed to high environmental stressors such as high temperature were examined for various molecular and biochemical markers, such as hsp70, bax, bcl-2, irak4 and traf6 gene expression, as well as the enzymatic activity of the hsp70, hsp90, bax, bcl-2, cleaved caspases, TNFa and ll-6 proteins. Furthermore, histopathology and molecular positivity to Marteilia sp. were addressed and correlated with the gene expression results. Our findings elucidate the molecular and biochemical pathways leading to mortality in farmed mussels in the context of Marteilia infection, which according to the results is multiplied by heatwaves causing a significant increase in pathophysiological markers.
