Abstract

BackgroundChildhood obesity prevention is a public health priority in industrialized countries. The Reggio Emilia Local Health Authority has implemented a program involving primary and secondary prevention as well as the care of obese children. There are many health-promoting mobile apps, but few are targeted to children and very few are sponsored by public health agencies. ObjectiveThe goal of the research was to describe the process and tools adopted to cocreate a mobile app sponsored by the Reggio Emilia Local Health Authority to be installed in parents’ phones aimed at promoting child health and preventing obesity. MethodsAfter stakeholder mapping, a consulting committee including relevant actors, stakeholders, and users was formed. Key persons for childhood obesity prevention were interviewed, focus groups with parents and pediatricians were conducted, and community reporting storytelling was collected. The results of these activities were presented to the consulting committee in order to define the functionalities and contents of the mobile app. ResultsThree key trends emerged from community reporting: being active, playing, and being outdoors; time for oneself, family, and friends; and the pressures of life and work and not having time to be active and socialize. In focus groups, interviews, and labs, mothers showed a positive attitude toward using an app to manage their children's weight, while pediatricians expressed concerns that the app could increase their workload. When these findings were explored by the consulting committee, four key themes were extracted: strong relationships with peers, family members, and the community; access to safe outdoor spaces; children’s need for age-appropriate independence; and professional support should be nonjudgmental and stigma-free. It should be a dialogue that promotes family autonomy. The app functions related to these needs include the following: (1) newsletter with anticipatory guidance, recipes, and vaccination and well-child visit reminders; (2) regional map indicating where physical activity can be done; (3) information on how to manage emergencies (eg, falls, burns, fever); (4) module for reinforcing the counseling intervention conducted by pediatricians for overweight children; and (5) a function to build a balanced daily diet. ConclusionsThe pilot study we conducted showed that cocreation in health promotion is feasible, with the consulting committee being the key co-governance and cocreation tool. The involvement of stakeholders in this committee made it possible to expand the number of persons and institutions actively contributing to the project.

Abstract

Beer bagasse is a residue waste produced in great amounts; nevertheless, it is still underestimated in the industry. The aim of this paper is to develop an innovative and efficient methodology to recycle the beer bagasse by producing Poly-lactic acid(PLA)-based bio-composites, in the forms of pellets and filaments, to be used in additive manufacturing processes. To assess the suitability of beer bagasse for extrusion-based 3D printing techniques, it was, firstly, physically and chemically characterized. Then, it was added in combination with different kinds of plasticizers to PLA to make bio-composites, analyzing their thermal and physical properties. The results prove the great potential of bagasse, evidencing its printability. Both composites' pellets and filaments were used in two different 3D printing machines and the mechanical properties of the 3D-printed models were evaluated as a function of the composition and the kind of technology used. All the used plasticizers improved processability and the polymer–bagasse interface. Compared to neat PLA, no changes in thermal properties were detected, but a lowering of the mechanical properties of the 3D-printed composites compared to the neat polymers was observed. Finally, a comparison between the efficiency of the two 3D printing techniques to be used with the bio-based composites was performed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A 9-year-old domestic cat, positive for antibodies to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), was brought to a veterinary clinic with alopecia, ulcerative skin lesions, and upper respiratory tract (URT) signs. This was after being treated for suspected allergic dermatitis, without clinical improvement, for 2 y. Biopsy of the skin and fine-needle aspirates of the spleen and of the lymph nodes were taken which detected the presence of Leishmania amastigotes. Leishmania infection was further confirmed by detection of a high titer of anti-Leishmania antibodies (≥ 3200) with an indirect fluorescent antibody technique (IFAT) serology. After the diagnosis of feline leishmaniosis (FeL) was made, allopurinol and meglumine antimoniate were started and led to quick and complete clinical improvement. After 7 mo, allopurinol administration was briefly interrupted but was resumed following relapse of the skin lesions. One month later, the cat was treated for suspected acute kidney injury, which prompted reduction of the total daily dose of allopurinol by 50%. The cat remained clinically well, with complete resolution of the cutaneous and URT signs, for nearly 24 mo after the diagnosis of FeL; at which point it was euthanized for worsening cardiac disease. To our knowledge, this represents a rare case of successful treatment of FeL with a suspected nephrotoxic effect associated with long-term use of allopurinol. Further studies are required to clarify the relationship, if any, between leishmaniosis and congestive heart failure in cats.

Abstract

This work is aimed to study the suitability of polylactic acid (PLA) plasticized by two cardanol derivatives, i.e. cardanol (CA) and epoxidized cardanol acetate (ECA), in two different processing techniques, i.e. injection molding and rotational molding. Plasticized PLA samples were obtained by melt mixing. For comparison purposes, poly(ethylene glycole), PEG plasticized PLA was also produced. Initially, the crystallization kinetics of plasticized were studied, highlighting the effect of PEG in increasing the rate of crystallization during cooling. Then, plasticized PLA were processed by the two different techniques, which are characterized by significantly different cooling rates: very fast for injection molding, and very low for rotational molding. For injection molded samples, the cooling rate is much higher than the critical quenching rate, which allows to obtain almost completely amorphous samples at 10 phr of plasticizer. On the other hand, in rotational molding, for PEG, the cooling rate is much lower than the critical quenching rate, which leads to the production of almost completely crystalline samples, showing a very brittle behaviour. The lower critical quenching rate of CA and ECA allowed to produce almost completely amorphous samples also by rotational molding, thus allowing to retain very good toughness of the produced samples. 48. Joaqu��n Torres-Garc��a���s Urban Fabrics: Fashioning the Body in New York, 1920-1922

Abstract

In 1919, the Uruguayan artist Torres-Garc��a moved from Barcelona to New York. In the experimental works that he produced during his two-year stay in the city, the artist presented New York and the bodies inhabiting it as inextricable from one another and mutually defining, enmeshed within the same urban fabric. He did so especially through references to fashion, depicting the articles of clothing worn by New Yorkers as extensions of the city���s morphology. By drawing upon the social functions of actual fabrics, Torres-Garc��a connected bodily and architectural surfaces to negotiate his ambivalence towards the demands of New York���s capitalist society on its denizens. This article investigates the artist���s constant oscillation between adhering to and undermining the conformity and mechanization that he attributed to New Yorkers. I argue that, through his interventions into the realm of fashion, Torres-Garc��a negotiated the urban individual���s potential to either adhere to the rhythms and lifestyles imposed by the city or resist them by playing with socio-economic signs and multiple identities. Abstract

IntroductionFollowing the detection of fetal growth restriction, there is no consensus about the criteria that should trigger delivery in the late preterm period. The consequences of inappropriate early or late delivery are potentially important yet practice varies widely around the world, with abnormal findings from fetal heart rate monitoring invariably leading to delivery. Indices derived from fetal cerebral Doppler examination may guide such decisions although there are few studies in this area. We propose a randomised, controlled trial to establish the optimum method of timing delivery between 32 weeks and 36 weeks 6 days of gestation. We hypothesise that delivery on evidence of cerebral blood flow redistribution reduces a composite of perinatal poor outcome, death and short-term hypoxia-related morbidity, with no worsening of neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years.Methods and analysisWomen with non-anomalous singleton pregnancies 32+0 to 36+6 weeks of gestation in whom the estimated fetal weight or abdominal circumference is Ethics and disseminationThe Study Coordination Centre has obtained approval from London-Riverside Research Ethics Committee (REC) and Health Regulatory Authority (HRA).
