The article explains why the concept of self-reliance in the Australian defence policy may be deemed as outdated and unaffordable. Topics explored include highlights of the 2013 Defence White Paper "Defending Australia and Its National Interests," published by the Australian Defence Force (ADF), the initial strategic defence systems which affirmed the self-reliance concept, the development of military capabilities by the ADF, and the analysis of self-reliance practicality and utility.
