BackgroundSpecialized training for elite US military units is associated with high attrition due to intense psychological and physical demands. The need to graduate more service members without degrading performance standards necessitates the identification of factors to predict success or failure in targeted training interventions. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to continuously quantify the mental and physical status of trainees of an elite military unit to identify novel predictors of success in training. MethodsA total of 3 consecutive classes of a specialized training course were provided with an Apple iPhone, Watch, and specially designed mobile app. Baseline personality assessments and continuous daily measures of mental status, physical pain, heart rate, activity, sleep, hydration, and nutrition were collected from the app and Watch data. ResultsA total of 115 trainees enrolled and completed the study (100% male; age: mean 22 years, SD 4 years) and 64 (55.7%) successfully graduated. Most training withdrawals (27/115, 23.5%) occurred by day 7 (mean 5.5 days, SD 3.4 days; range 1-22 days). Extraversion, positive affect personality traits, and daily psychological profiles were associated with course completion; key psychological factors could predict withdrawals 1-2 days in advance (P=.009). ConclusionsGathering accurate and continuous mental and physical status data during elite military training is possible with early predictors of withdrawal providing an opportunity for intervention.

The government of Ontario has adopted wind energy development as an alternative energy source. It enacted the Green Energy and Economy Act, May 2009, with the intention to fast track the approval process regarding industrial wind turbines. The Act legislated a centralized decision making process while removing local jurisdictional authority. Throughout this process, the government reassured the public of inexpensive and reliable electricity. The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need to develop highly potent and safe medications that are complementary to the role of vaccines. Specifically, it has exhibited the need for orally bioavailable broad-spectrum antivirals that are able to be quickly deployed against newly emerging viral pathogens. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) and its variants Delta and Omicron are still a major threat to patients of all ages. In this brief report, we describe that the small molecule CD04872SC was able to neutralize SARS-CoV2 infection with a half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) = 248 μM. Serendipitously, we also were able to observe that CD04872SC inhibited the infection of the SARS-CoV-2 variants; Delta (EC50 = 152 μM) and Omicron (EC50 = 308 μM). These properties may define CD04872SC as a potential broad-spectrum candidate lead for the development of treatments for COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reconnaissance Marine training is deliberately difficult, to assure that graduates have the capabilities required to function successfully in the high-risk military occupational specialty. The majority of training attrition is due to voluntary withdrawal and previous research has identified certain predictive factors such as demographics, mental status, and physical performance. While some characteristics of training attrition have been identified, there is still a lack of understanding related to an individual's profile that is more apt to complete Recon training. Retrospective survey data was analyzed from 3,438 trainees within the Reconnaissance Training Company. Surveys were related to trainees' military recruitment history and other military experience, prior life experience, athletic experience, self-identified personality characteristics and motivations, and reasons for voluntary withdrawal if applicable, as well as physical performance metrics. Various demographic factors, self-reported hobbies, motivations, aquatic experience, and physical performance were associated with success in Recon Marine training courses. Subjects who voluntarily withdrew from training most commonly cited mental stress and aquatic rigor as the reason and less commonly cited reasons were physical and family reasons. These results could potentially increase training success, but more research is needed to understand the relationships between the observed trainee characteristics and success in elite warfighter training. Climate change is the most challenging issue of our time. While climate change is often portrayed as a global phenomenon, the real impacts of climate change are felt at the local level. Changes in climatic conditions directly affect the level of precipitation which is very important for crop production in Ontario. How do changes in climate affect corn and soybean yields at the county level in Ontario? This question is addressed in this paper by estimating the effects of climatic and economic factors on yields of grain corn and soybean in three selected counties in Southwestern Ontario employing data from 1950 to 2013. The results demonstrate that the effect of precipitation during growing season on yield is positive and statistically significant and it is consistent across the selected counties. The effects of solar energy on crop yields vary across counties. Yields of both crops increase as crop price increases and decline as the price of fertilizer increases. Finally, developments in technology have a strong effect on enhancing yield for both crops. The climatic factors have a larger impact than the effects of economic factors on corn yields at the county level. The reverse, however, appears to be true for soybean production at the county level in Ontario. The policy implications of the results are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the economic feasibility of a subsurface irrigation system for a representative corn producer in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. We use stochastic capital budgeting to generate a distribution of net present values for this investment. Future corn yields and corn prices were treated as distributions. Under our base assumptions, the subsurface drip irrigation system has a negative expected net present value, meaning that it would not be a worthwhile investment for a corn farmer at the present time. The system's ability to increase yields has the largest effect on its expected net present value. Attempts to improve the system's economic value should focus on increasing its effect on yields in years with typical agronomic conditions. With reasonable assumptions for other system parameters, the initial cost of a 40.5 ha system would have to be reduced to $165,000 to have a positive net present value 50% of the time or the system would have to increase corn yields by 33% in years with typical growing conditions to achieve the same net present value outcome.
