We advance the characterization of complexity in quantum many-body systems by examining $W$-states embedded in a spin chain. Such states show an amount of non-stabilizerness or "magic" (measured as the Stabilizer R\'enyi Entropy -SRE-) that grows logarithmic with the number of qubits/spins. We focus on systems whose Hamiltonian admits a classical point with an extensive degeneracy. Near these points, a Clifford circuit can convert the ground state into a $W$-state, while in the rest of the phase to which the classic point belongs, it is dressed with local quantum correlations. Topological frustrated quantum spin-chains host phases with the desired phenomenology, and we show that their ground state's SRE is the sum of that of the $W$-states plus an extensive local contribution. Our work reveals that $W$-states/frustrated ground states display a non-local degree of complexity that can be harvested as a quantum resource and has no counterpart in GHZ states/non-frustrated systems., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

Hartmann tube equipment is used in the dust explosion experimental test to screen the flammability of powdered materials (according to ISO 80079-20) and to determine the Minimum ignition energy of dust (UNI EN 13824:2004). For the test, the nominal concentration, as the ratio between the dust sample mass and the chamber test volume (1.2 liters), is considered, assuming a uniform concentration distribution. Even though adopted as standard procedure, this approach does not consider the dust cloud's non-stationary conditions inside the tube: the effect of turbulence decrease and dust sedimentation during the test duration will affect the dust concentration locally and globally within the test enclosure. Moreover, it is well known that the turbulence intensity influences Minimum Ignition Energy. This work derives from previous investigation on describing the dust cloud behavior within dust explosibility laboratory apparatuses. High-speed video recordings have recently been adopted to support the dust cloud dynamic analysis and visualize the cloud dispersion within a standard test setup, as the 20 L sphere and the modified Hartmann tube. This work intends to use different high-speed videos of dust dispersions in the modified Hartmann tube, with different injection pressure and sample mass, to focus on the behavior of the cloud at the typical delay time of the MIE measurement, i.e., 60-180 ms. Each video is processed frame by frame to reveal information on the cloud dynamics, otherwise hidden. The dust dynamic is accounted for calculating the variation in time of the brightness of pixels. This way, it is possible to obtain a set of data that incorporate the effects of the dust cloud distribution and the velocity of the particles’ clusters. The experimental data processing will help to focus on the time-scale and the length scale of the turbulence. The next study will focus on evaluating the time and space scale of the dust cloud and identifying the effect of ignition time delay on the MIE measurement to provide indications to operate at the most conservative conditions (higher concentration) and to avoid issues and under/overestimates due to agglomeration, sedimentation or segregation of dust particles.

Objectives Few studies have analyzed factors associated with delirium subtypes. In this study, we investigate factors associated with subtypes of delirium only in patients with dementia to provide insights on the possible prevention and treatments. Design This is a cross-sectional study nested in the "Delirium Day" study, a nationwide Italian point-prevalence study. Setting and participants Older patients admitted to 205 acute and 92 rehabilitation hospital wards. Measures Delirium was evaluated with the 4-AT and the motor subtypes with the Delirium Motor Subtype Scale. Dementia was defined by the presence of a documented diagnosis in the medical records and/or prescription of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or memantine prior to admission. Results Of the 1057 patients with dementia, 35% had delirium, with 25.6% hyperactive, 33.1% hypoactive, 34.5% mixed, and 6.7% nonmotor subtype. There were higher odds of having venous catheters in the hypoactive (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.18-2.81) and mixed type of delirium (OR 2.23, CI 1.43-3.46), whereas higher odds of urinary catheters in the hypoactive (OR 2.91, CI 1.92-4.39), hyperactive (OR 1.99, CI 1.23-3.21), and mixed types of delirium (OR 2.05, CI 1.36-3.07). We found higher odds of antipsychotics both in the hyperactive (OR 2.87, CI 1.81-4.54) and mixed subtype (OR 1.84, CI 1.24-2.75), whereas higher odds of antibiotics was present only in the mixed subtype (OR 1.91, CI 1.26-2.87). Conclusions and implications In patients with dementia, the mixed delirium subtype is the most prevalent followed by the hypoactive, hyperactive, and nonmotor subtype. Motor subtypes of delirium may be triggered by clinical factors, including the use of venous and urinary catheters, and the use of antipsychotics. Future studies are necessary to provide further insights on the possible pathophysiology of delirium in patients with dementia and to address the optimization of the management of potential risk factors.

The incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing and the prognosis for patients with advanced or metastatic disease is relatively poor. Immunotherapies hold great promise, but deploying them effectively in CRC patients will require further knowledge of the complex cellular and molecular interactions that occur between intestinal tumours and the host immune system. The objective of this study is to understand the mechanisms by which lack of immune cell regulation in the gut can drive the formation of colon adenocarcinomas. In addition, this work aims to identify new mechanisms involved in progression to metastatic disease. Using mouse model systems, we found that aberrant activity of Treg cells deficient in IL-10 can promote inflammation-driven CRC. IL-10 deficient Tregs have increased capacity to drive tumourigenesis compared to their CD4+ effector T cell counterparts. RNA sequencing revealed specific upregulation of several genes, including a newly-described cytokine, in tumour-promoting Tregs. We explored cytokine regulation and the tumour microenvironment, and show that the inflammatory cytokine IL-6 and TGFβ are necessary for tumour formation in this model. Moreover, disease is associated with a marked stromal cell signature that is induced as a consequence of Treg deficiency in IL-10 production. Gp38+ stromal cells are dominant producers of IL-6, and potent ECM modellers. Furthermore, tumours driven by IL-10 deficient Tregs express high amounts of the pro-mesenchymal transcription factor Sox4. Using combined in vitro and in vivo analyses, we confirm that Sox4 is involved in tumour growth and characterise its expression in CRC patients. Collectively, our findings suggest that Tregs and stromal cells act together to foster a microenvironment that promotes disease progression, notably through the expression of Sox4 in tumour cells. These findings open an exciting avenue to explore the phenotype of tumour-promoting Tregs and to study Sox4 function in metastatic disease.

Traditional press and sinter processes have gained in the last decades more and more importance in the manufacturing of high volume and precise mechanical components especially in the field of iron based powders. In recent years, the reductions of processing times and temperatures were spotted as critical targets to increase productivity and reduce energy consumption. Electric current assisted sintering (ECAS) technologies have always been seen as an alternative to traditional furnace based sintering techniques and have been the target of different researches with the specific purpose of reducing both operational times and costs. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of an innovative process called Electro Sinter Forging (ESF) applied to CuSn15 powders. Thanks to a very short processing time (less than 1 second to densify loose powders), this process is able to retain a very small grain size, thus enhancing mechanical properties of the processed materials. Furthermore, to the authors knowledge, cold - rolled electro - sinter - forged alloys has never been investigated before. First of all, bars were electro - sinter - forged and subsequently characterized in the as sinter - forged condition. The observation of microstructure evidenced an extremely fine microstructure and a reduced degree of porosity. Afterwards, bars were cold rolled after different reduction ratios; macrostructural integrity of the rolled bars was assessed before evaluating the effects of cold rolling on the sinter - forged microstructure. We report on a design of a TM-mode based metamaterial-loaded waveguide. Network analyzer measurements demonstrated a left-handed propagation region for the TM
11 mode at around 10 GHz. A beamline experiment was performed with the metamaterial-loaded waveguide. In this experiment, a 6 MeV electron beam passes through the waveguide and generates a wakefield via the Cherenkov radiation mechanism. We detected a signal in the left-handed frequency band at 10 GHz. This is an indirect demonstration of reverse Cherenkov radiation as predicted in the work of Veselago [Sov. Phys. Usp. 10, 509 (1968)] and discussed in the works of Lu et al. [Opt. Express 11, 723 (2003)], Averkov and Yakovenko [Phys. Rev. B 72, 205110 (2005)], and Tyukhtin et al. [IEEE, Proceedings of the PAC, 2007 (unpublished), pp. 4156–4158]. Cherenkov radiation in artificially constructed materials [metamaterials (MTMs)] can provide unusual engineered features that can be advantageous for particle detector design. - Abstract
The objective of the present study was to observe the effect of positioning of the mandible on the accuracy of cross-sectional images obtained by reformatting computerized tomographic (CT) scans. An additional aim was to evaluate the ability of a software program (DentalVox, Era Scientific) to reconstruct these measurements on the reformatted images, regardless of the positioning of the mandible, accurately and without distortion. The test was carried out by examining a partially edentulous dry human mandible with an acrylic radiologic template. Through the use of an acrylic glass support, the mandible was positioned at angles of 0, 10, 15, 20, and 30 degrees relative to the scanning gantry, and a series of CT scans was performed that provided five sets of axial images. Each set of original axial images was reformatted by the DentalVox software, used first in its basic function, which is typical of all software for axial CT measurement (control group), and again in its function of site-specific multiplanar reconstruction (test group). The results showed that the position of the mandible in relation to the CT gantry can influence the precision of the linear measurements. The error ranged from 2% to 51%. The DentalVox software allowed the reconstruction of cross-sectional images with very little distortion regardless of the mandibular position. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) is a rare, severe neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by recurrent hemiplegic episodes and distinct neurological manifestations. AHC is usually a sporadic disorder and has unknown etiology. We used exome sequencing of seven patients with AHC and their unaffected parents to identify de novo nonsynonymous mutations in ATP1A3 in all seven individuals. In a subsequent sequence analysis of ATP1A3 in 98 other patients with AHC, we found that ATP1A3 mutations were likely to be responsible for at least 74% of the cases; we also identified one inherited mutation in a case of familial AHC. Notably, most AHC cases are caused by one of seven recurrent ATP1A3 mutations, one of which was observed in 36 patients. Unlike ATP1A3 mutations that cause rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism, AHC-causing mutations in this gene caused consistent reductions in ATPase activity without affecting the level of protein expression. This work identifies de novo ATP1A3 mutations as the primary cause of AHC and offers insight into disease pathophysiology by expanding the spectrum of phenotypes associated with mutations in ATP1A3.

Item does not contain fulltext Genetic research has shown that mutations that modify the protein-coding sequence of ATP1A3, the gene encoding the alpha3 subunit of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase, cause both rapid-onset dystonia parkinsonism and alternating hemiplegia of childhood. These discoveries link two clinically distinct neurological diseases to the same gene, however, ATP1A3 mutations are, with one exception, disease-specific. Although the exact mechanism of how these mutations lead to disease is still unknown, much knowledge has been gained about functional consequences of ATP1A3 mutations using a range of in-vitro and animal model systems, and the role of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPases in the brain. Researchers and clinicians are attempting to further characterise neurological manifestations associated with mutations in ATP1A3, and to build on the existing molecular knowledge to understand how specific mutations can lead to different diseases.

Within the European Fusion Technology Programme, for the period 1997-1998, significant R&D activities related to the DEMO Reactor Helium Cooled Pebble Bed Blanket (HCPB) concept are being carried-out. The conceptual design and layout of the Test Blanket Module (TBM) to be tested in the ITER the fabrication of the related test sections and the Out-of-Pile testing activities are performed in the Work Package WP B2.1 and WP B3.2. The reference facility for testing the TBM medium scale mock-ups is the HE-FUS3 facility at ENEA Brasimone. These experiments will have the main objectives to investigate the thermal and mechanical behaviour of the TBM module under steady state, cyclic power and conditions. The paper presents the TBM mock-up design assumptions the preliminary calculations, the envisaged manufacturing procedures and a draft programme for the fabrication and testing of the mock-ups.

- Abstract
The problem of evaluating the impact on the efficiency consequent to the adoption of bonded magnets in substitution of ferrites in small PM machines is faced. Several prototypes produced in the Authors' laboratories have been tested and a long experimental activity has been carried on. In particular the focus of the work has been the identification and separation of the iron losses, both hysteresis and eddy currents, from the contribution of the bearings. The corresponding torques have been calculated and the energetic behaviors of the original machine with ferrites and the prototypes with phenolic bonded magnets have been analyzed. The positive impact on the efficiency of the machine with bonded magnets let possible to consider the analyzed solution as realistically adoptable. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Dielectric loaded wakefield structures have potential to be used as high gradient accelerator components. Using the high current drive beam at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator Facility, we employed cylindrical dielectric loaded wakefield structures to generate accelerating fields of up to 86 MV/m, at 10 GHz. Short electron bunches of up to 86 nC are used to drive these fields, either as single bunches or as bunch trains. The structures consist of cylindrical ceramic tubes (cordierite) with a dielectric constant of 4.76, inserted into cylindrical copper waveguides. These standing-wave structures have a field probe near the outer diameter of the dielectric, in order to sample the RF fields generated by the electron bunches. Monitoring the field probe signal serves to verify the absence of electric breakdown in the structures. Electrical machines cover a very wide range of applications in many industrials sectors and the research to improve the performance of those applications is recently leading to the development of new solutions. Those devices are generally equipped with magnetic circuits made of laminated ferromagnetic steel, but in the last decade, new magnetic materials have been developed to realise magnetic circuits: Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC). The Authors have investigated SMCs with organic layer obtained through the adoption of phenolic and epoxy resins; in previous research activities several mixture compositions have been produced and analysed with different percentages of binder and compacting pressures. Promising results regarding magnetic and mechanical performances have been obtained using a very low binder content. The paper aims to investigate the lower limit of the binder to be used, still keeping good mechanical properties. Appropriate magnetic tests have been performed on toroidal specimens: good magnetic characteristics have been obtained, maintaining on the other side proper mechanical strength.

We analytically compute the Renyi entropies for the RSOS models, representing a wide class of exactly solvable models with multicritical conformal points described by unitary minimal models and ℤn parafermions. The exact expressions allow for an explicit comparison of the expansions around the critical points with the predictions coming from field theory. In this way, it is possible to point out the nature of the so-called "unusual corrections," clarifying the link with the operator content, the role of the symmetries and the boundary conditions. By choosing different boundary conditions, we can single out the ground states as well as certain combinations of high-energy states. We find that the entanglement spectrum is given by operators different from those responsible for the off-critical perturbation, although they belong to the same representation of a Virasoro algebra. The study provides an exhaustive set of migration data for octadecyl 3‐(3,5‐di‐tert‐butyl‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)propionate (Irganox 1076) from low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) in several food matrices. Irganox 1076 was used as a model migrant because it represents one of the typical substances used as an antioxidant in food packaging polymers. Kinetic (time‐dependent) migration studies of Irganox 1076 were performed for selected foodstuffs chosen with different physical–chemical properties and in relation to the actual European food consumption market. The effect of fat content and of the temperature of storage on the migration from plastic packaging was evaluated. The results show that migration increased with fat content and storage temperature. All data obtained from real foods were also compared with data obtained from simulants tested in the same conditions. In all studied cases, the kinetics in simulants were higher than those in foodstuffs. The work provides data valuable for the extension of the validation of migration model developed on simulants to foodstuffs themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Magnetite nanoparticles (FeO NPs) are manufactured nanomaterials increasingly used in healthcare for different medical applications ranging from diagnosis to therapy. This study deals with the irradiation of FeO NPs with a proton beam in order to produce Co as radiolabel and also with the possible use of nuclear techniques for the quantification of FeO NPs in biological systems. Particular attention has been focused on the size distribution (in the range of 100 nm) and the surface charge of the NPs characterizing them before and after the irradiation process in order to verify if these essential properties would be preserved during irradiation. Moreover, X-ray diffraction studies have been performed on radioactive and non-radioactive NPs, to assess if major changes in NPs structure might occur due to thermal and/or radiation effects. The radiation emitted from the radiolabels has been used to quantify the cellular uptake of the NPs in in vitro studies. As for the biological applications two cell lines have been selected: immortalized mouse fibroblast cell line (Balb/3T3) and human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line (Caco-2). The cell uptake has been quantified by radioactivity measurements of the Co radioisotope performed with high resolution γ-ray spectrometry equipment. This study has showed that, under well-established irradiation conditions, FeO NPs do not undergo significant structural modifications and thus the obtained results are in line with the uptake studies carried out with the same non-radioactive nanomaterials (NMs). Therefore, the radiolabelling method can be fruitfully applied to uptake studies because of the low-level exposure where higher sensitivity is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Nowadays, a wide variety of nanoparticles (NPs) are applied in different fields such as medical science and industry. Due to their large commercial volume, the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (NMs) has proposed to study a set of 14 nanomaterials, one of which being cerium oxide (\CeO 2). In particular, \CeO 2 based NPs are widely used in automotive industry, healthcare, and cosmetics. In this paper, we propose a method for the production of radioactive \CeO 2 NPs. We demonstrate that they maintain the same physicochemical characteristics as the “cold” ones in terms of size distribution and Zeta potential; we develop a new protocol to assess their cellular interaction in immortalized mouse fibroblast cell line Balb/3T3, a model for the study of basal cytotoxicity and carcinogenic potential induced by chemicals and in the present case by NPs. Experimental result of this work, which shows a quasi-linear concentration-uptake response of cells, can be useful as a reference dose-uptake curve for explaining effects following biological uptake after exposure to \CeO 2 NPs.
